Malaysia is an Asian country divided into two regions—East Malaysia and West Malaysia—separated by the South China Sea. Malaysian families and communities often come together to fly kites. The country even hosts kite-flying festivals! This title for young readers reveals Malaysia’s recreational activities, cuisine, and more.
A good view of a country I know little about. It is a country in the tropics with Peninsular Malaysia on the west and East Malaysia sharing the large island of Borneo with Indonesia. There are a lot of tropical rain forests. Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain at 13, 455 feet. The island of Sipadan is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs. The Malaysian tiger and tapirs frequent the forests. Their beaches are nurseries for sea turtles. Also, there is the world's largest flower, the rafflesia, whose flower measures 3 feet across and gives off the scent of dead flesh. Sun bears use their long tongue to get honey from bees' nests and the rare Sumatran rhinoceroses move about during the night like a theif. The two largest religions ar Muslims (60%) and Buddhist (19%).
This short read is thorough in its description of Malaysia. Providing information on this country's food,, people, daily life, recreation, schools, wildlife, fast facts, as well as an index, glossary, and resources for more learning, it's a great book to have for teaching research to young students in grades 2 and above.
It's a good book for a very, very, VERY brief summary of Malaysia (32 pages including the index). I have Malaysia as my country for IELC... and I was kind of hoping for a longer book, to give me a better feel for the country. But hey, I learned about their kites! That's cool!
