Namaste is the most common greeting in Nepal. It means, "The spirit within me recognizes and honors the spirit within you." Nepalese are spiritual people who believe in fate, or karma. Young readers will be fascinated by this country's history, traditions, and daily life.
A good book by author Lisa Owings about geography. One thing I learned is that Nepal has the only flag that is not a rectangle. It is two triangles joined together. It has 30 million people which is quite a lot for this smallish country. Some of the animals there are the Himalayan tahr. Sometimes, Asian elephants and Indian rhinoceroses can be found in Nepal's lowlands. Predators there include Bengal tigers and spotted leopards. It is considered good luck to see a beautiful blue bird named an Indian roller. Himalayan black bears and monkeys are good to see. Red pandas hide in mountain forests. The people who live there came from India and Tibet, a part of China. A special group of people who live high up in the mountains are the sherpas, who often help other explorers to scale high mountains like Everest. One dish is called jalebi, which are fried orange swirls. Also, a tea called chiya is drank all day.
32 pages. Another great book in the Exploring Countries series. Format and information is excellent. Great photos, charts and additional information at the end. Great job! What an interesting place! Highly recommended Gr. 4 and up.
