Taiwan is a tropical island east of China that experiences frequent, powerful earthquakes. Tremors do not stand in the way of the many high-tech innovations the Taiwanese produce and share with the world. This title will teach young readers about Taiwan's history and what life is like today.
A nice synopsis about Taiwan. It is the Republic of China. It exists due to the conflict of two types of governments: one Capitalism for Taiwan and one Communism for People's Republic of China. Having taken a college class from a teacher native to the People's Republic of China, she did not like to be referred to as a Communist. Taiwan has a beautiful national park called Taroko with the Taroko Gorge with the Liwu River running through it. Some of the animals there are the Formosan Rock macaque (a type of monkey), hawksbill sea turtle, flying squirrels, and the Formosan serow (a goat-like animal). The end of summer they celebrate the month-long Ghost Festival. The have many teas and they are all made from the same plant "camellia sinensis." A good book.
Taiwan by Lisa Owings in the Exploring Countries series explains the Geography, Landscape, People, Education, Recreation and much more of this interesting country. One of the things that readers will learn is how tea making and drinking is an important part of Taiwanese culture. Very enjoyable, and I really recommend it.
32 pages; Another great book in the Exploring Countries series. Format and information is excellent. Great photos, charts and additional information at the end. Great job! Highly recommended Gr. 4 and up.
