Haakon Olesson, leader of the Vikings aboard the dragon ship, Red Hawk, must rescue his wife from her kidnappers and receives a golden ax from Thor the god of thunder
Haakon is having a bad-luck season when he's visited by Thor to change his luck.
A mixed blessing, because he's not invulnerable and still has to work to plunder and pillage - even when the "gods" want him to do something. Then there's that ax ...
I liked the story, especially after things finally got rolling. And there's a puppy-dog (I LOVE dogs) -- with sharp teeth and a bad attitude towards his master's enemies (perceived or otherwise).
When all the shouting is done, he still has an enemy he has to fight, but that's in the next book?
As someone that loves Vikings and Norse mythology, I really enjoyed reading this novel. It is a rather short read that is filled with action, love, and most importantly an authentic Viking story. The story takes place during the Viking age and contains the Norse gods, the battle strategies of the Vikings, and shows that the Viking may be raiders, but that they were not just mindless barbarians. They were an intelligent people that could show mercy, compassion, and honor. They brought fear to the rest of Europe, but they were still humans with human emotions and a fascinating society. This story by Eric Neilson is able to show all of this and may not be the best written story, but it is still accurate, exciting, and authentic to the Norse. This is a great book and I am glad I was able to read it and share in the adventures of Haakon, Bjorn, Gunnar, One-Eyed, and Rosamund. I am looking forward to reading the next book and recommend this book to fans of the Vikings and the Norse as well of those that enjoy historical fiction.
