Foreword by Alistair Begg. What is wrong with the human race? Today those who shape social policy often offer the wrong answers. Dr Lloyd-Jones takes us beyond human prejudices and provides us with an apologetic for the gospel. The doctor exposes these flaws in modern thinking, especially in the "scientific approach." He provides us with a penetrating diagnosis of the human condition and shows decisively that the true remedy for our ills is in Jesus Christ - and Him alone. Truly everything we need for salvation is found in Christ alone.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.
Those who have already drunk deeply from the writings of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones will probably find the most profit here. This is not one of his main books, but in reading Murray's second vol. biography of Lloyd-Jones I came across the fact that there was a series of five lectures that he delivered at Wheaton College in 1947. This short book contains those five lectures:
Lecture #1: What is man? Lecture #2: What is wrong with man? Lecture #3: Sincerity versus truth Lecture #4: The simple gospel Lecture #5: Is the gospel still relevant?
I especially wanted to read the 5th lecture on the continuing relevance of the gospel. And why is the gospel still relevant? 1) Because man has not changed 2) Because God has not changed 3) Because there is nothing better than the gospel: It is still the only thing in the world which can adequately deal with the problem and the condition of man.
This short book is marked by MLJ's signature "Logic on Fire."
Truth Unchanged, Unchanging is the first book I have read by Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and upon reflection, this was a wonderful introduction to his writing. This ‘book’ is rather a collection of lectures he delivered at Wheaton College in 1947, in which he addressed the following topics: What is man? What is wrong with man? Sincerity versus truth. The simple gospel. And Is the gospel still relevant? Upon reading through his approach to these five topics, I now have a new understanding as to why MLJ is widely know for the phrase “Logic on fire”.
Lloyd-Jones addressed these lecture topics with clarity, starting from simple truths, and using reason to plead the Christian view. When reading of the issues Lloyd-Jones was describing at the time of delivering these addresses, I was utterly amazed the fact that the exact same issues could be said to be prominent today in our society and culture – it is indeed true that nothing is new under the sun. Over the course of the book, I appreciated his desire for absolute truth to be known, and also how he reverted all problems in our world back to the ultimate solution, which is the gospel and needing to be saved by Jesus Christ.
In summary, this was an enjoyable read. This book can be read more as an apologetic tool in many respects, but also has clear gospel explanations which I enjoyed. I look forward to reading much more of the Doctor in the future.
This book, culled from a series of lectures delivered by Lloyd-Jones, discusses the universal condition of sinful man, as well as the God-provided solution through Christ. At first glance, having originally been published in 1950, this book seems strikingly prescient in the issues currently faced. However, this may only validate Lloyd-Jones’ claim that the most pressing issues of humanity are unchanging and irredeemable apart from the intervention of God in the person of His Son, Jesus.
I read this book a few years ago when I was going though hard times. I am lost and dead in my sins and I cannot do anything about it, "but God" sent Jesus to live, die and rise again to forgive, justify and bring me back to God. This is the "Truth unchanged, (and goes on) unchanging", the message of the Holy Bible, that has lifted me up in this little but powerful book by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones.
First sentence: What is man? Any true consideration of man and his problems in the modern world must answer that question. If the basic idea of what man is is a mistaken one, so of necessity will be the view of his troubles and what can be done for him.
Truth Unchanged Unchanging began its life as a series of lectures given by Martyn Lloyd-Jones in 1947. It was first published in book form in 1951. Crossway republished it in 1993. The lectures have an apologetic vibe. The lectures address basic questions that "universal man" is asking and seeking answers to. It is very much written with a twentieth-century view, and perhaps slightly older than mid-century philosophy. That is not at all to say--not even a little bit--that the answers are any less relevant or any less true. Just that the specific questions and the arguments against Christian answers will have shifted and changed. Particularly the arguments against. The suppositions/presuppositions will have perhaps changed as well. Again, Lloyd-Jones' arguments FOR Christianity are ever-relevant, ever-true. At the end of almost every chapter, his writing becomes more emphatic, more persuasive. He always ends his arguments strongly.
Chapter titles include: What is Man? What is Wrong with Man? Sincerity versus Truth The Simple Gospel Is the Gospel Still Relevant? Quotes: Man cannot rehabilitate his true self. He cannot find God. Man can lose his own soul, but he can never find it again. He can kill and destroy it, but he cannot create it anew. And were it not for one thing he would go inevitably to the eternal fire of Hell. But, thank God, there is that one thing. "The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10). Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, came down to earth and lived and died and rose again in order to save. He has borne the punishment that we deserve on account of sin and for spoiling and marring the image of God upon us. But more, He restores our soul to us. He gives us a new nature and fills us with power that will enable us to express this new and true self even as He expressed it Himself. (35)
Not in Lloyd-Jones' usual powerful influence as when he is expositing Scripture. These were lectures at Wheaton College. Still important and very relevant to the current situation we are facing in the church and society.
Although this is a pretty slim volume that doesn't mean it's lacking in substance. The book is taken from a series of lectures delivered by Lloyd Jones in 1947 each one making up one of the 5 chapters. 1) What Is Man 2) What Is Wrong With Man 3) Sincerity Versus Truth 4) The Simple Gospel 5) Is the Gospel Still Relevant?
The language sometimes may seem a little dated but the content is excellent. Lloyd Jones shows the relevance of the gospel in the modern age and although the lectures were delivered over 70 years ago the relevance still remains true.
