Alexandre Jacob: Sailor, Thief, Anarchist, Convict (1879-1954) Vol. I

Basically we too, the hard, dauntless ones with our refusal to accommodate, even we, who are not discouraged by the threats of the institutions, nor by the far more terrible ones of imbecility disguised as rebellion, also need our iconography. That is why we collect memories, sympathies, friendship—sometimes no more than a simple handshake—storing them up in our minds as sharing and support when not direct participation.

Rigorous science is no longer possible: remember? So how can we put any criteria in our fantasy. Let's leave it at full gallop, far from the sepsis that used to confuse us not long ago. Let's warm our hearts with tales of adventure like the one we are presenting here...

Another biography that reads like an adventure novel in the best of ways. If you enjoyed The Bonnot Gang by Richard Parry, this is a must read. Bernard Thomas' own political views come out, which is interesting and a little distracting given that he does not view propaganda by the deed favorably. Still a great read.

An Elephant Editions reprint I feel fully comfortable giving five stars. I had never heard of Alexandre Jacob before this was printed, but his story is one close to my heart. Like many of the more well-known agents of propaganda by the deed, Jacob lives the fast life and pulls no punches when it comes to his commitment to anarchy. Another story worth preserving.

A thrilling and poetic read. All I want to know is if a second volume exists in English.
