After a long series of professional and personal upheavals, Detective Lane begins his latest adventure happy, at peace, and enjoying life with his partner Arthur, their children Christine and Matt, and his able new partner, RCMP officer Keely Saliba.
But when the body of a young boy is unearthed ten years after he was reported missing, Lane's investigation into the crime puts him in conflict with a powerful and charismatic Calgary real estate developer and restaurateur--a cunning sociopath whose desire to suppress any threat to his empire will endanger the safety of Lane's own family.
The sixth book in Garry Ryan's award-winning and Calgary Herald bestselling series of Detective Lane mysteries pits Lane against his most dangerous antagonist yet.
After giving 4-stars to the first four books of the series, I thought number five—Malabarista—faltered, and this book, number 6, flopped.
The weaving Lane's, Harper's, and Saliba's families directly into the criminal plot, was melodramatic at best, and actually preposterous in my opinion. In addition, there were several pointless little plot details, for example, obtaining 20 burner cell phones (with unspecified tweaks to enhance security) for 10 people to use during the investigation, but only 5 or 6 of those people actually contribute anything to the investigation (at best), and the villain had no access to phone calls anyway. Or the chief of police mysteriously having the number of Harper's burner cell and sending Lane and Harper to "move on" (which I read as 'investigate') Saliba's shooting in a case they have been specifically removed from active involvement because their families are directly involved. Furthermore, there is nothing for them to do and so they do nothing other than drive to the scene.
Lane, Saliba, and Harper actually do little police work/investigating in this story, rather it is Lane's partner Arthur, his secretary Lori, and Salina's brother's friends who find the abducted kids, and formerly silent witnesses who explain the other crimes in the end.
The 6th mystery in the Detective series is the most intense. We find Lane in this book enjoying a short vacation with his family until he get the dreaded phone call from his new partner, Keely Sabib . Seems that the remains of a missing 14 year old have been discovered and it is related to a case that Lane had worked on 10 years ago.The missing young man was named Zander Rowe was the brother of a gang member named Robert Rowe and it was thought that his disappearance was revenge for Robert killing Kevin Moreau's cousin in a drive by shooting. Kev (as he's called) is a chilling sociopath who disguises himself as an influential business man with a chain of restaurants and apartment buildings around Calgary. Kevin brutally gets rid of those who dare to speak against him, he's totally without feelings or remorse. On the home fronts, Lane is dealing with the after affects of Arthur's bout with breast cancer and each man fearfully wonder even though he has successfully gone thru the treatments, if the cancer will return. Also, Keely is having problems with her father and a fiancé that she feels she didn't really know. All this and Robert Rowe has escaped from prison and Kevin Moreau seems to be getting rid of witnesses to his past deeds. This is a roller coaster ride so hold on tight and get comfy. This is a good read and as I said before, very intense!
So in less than 2 weeks I have finished all six books (to-date) in the Detective Lane series. Action packed with a good balance of drama, this latest held my attention from beginning to end. What I found memorable about the plot was that it was not the usual police force who rode to the rescue. It was the victims who rose to the occasion. How the sociopath met his end was quite a shocker. What I enjoyed was how Lane's circle of family and close friends banded together to save the day. I like Lane's new partner introduced in the 5th book but I am glad Harper was back in the picture in this 6th book. I hope Lane get to keep Harper as his partner in future books. I have really grown attached to these characters and hope the 7th book is not too far away. Great crime series with the perfect blend of mystery, drama and suspense
Although I think the story was okay, I don't like the way this book was written. It is the first from this author I've read and because I would like to know more of the back story of these characters I might try reading some of the earlier ones
