New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a savior of stray kittens, and a voice actress, not necessarily in that order. a short and lazy review, but it's got adorable animals at the end! i pander with pandas!

this e-only addition to the razorland series didn't seem particularly revelatory to me. or necessary. it's basically a deleted scene from Outpost, which i read years and years ago, so the story isn't as fresh in my mind as it could be, but i feel like we already knew all this. or maybe we learned or could glean it from fade's behavior in Horde, which i read much more recently. it's just more "stuff that's going on in fade's head" in a scene we've already read from deuce's POV. it doesn't put any mysteries to rest or offer up new information or action sequences; nothing that couldn't be extrapolated from already-existing scenes. it was probably better as a little nibble to tide readers over before Horde was released than the way i read it - learning of its existence only after i'd finished reading the entire series. oh, well; it's short and it's here and it's free and it'll get you a little closer to your reading challenge!

this review is too boring, so here are some animal gifs

I recommend Restoration.
"And what do you think I’m after?”

“Her heart,” I said. “Which is too bad. You see… that’s mine, and it always will be. Odd as it might seem, she’d rather have me broken than you whole."
Ooh, burn!

I've always thought that Fade's character is transparent enough, that there is no need to include his POV. Fade wears his heart on his sleeve, so when the hurt was too painful, the despair too raw, he pulled away from Deuce.

Furthermore, it's a good thing that Fade's POV is just an e-novella. I only need a taste for what's inside his head, his heart. And I was delighted with what I got.

Obviously, he's still in love with Deuce. But how was it for him to ache for her touch and yet recoil at the thought of her touching him? It was... a losing battle each day. And it doesn't favor the Huntress.

Meh. Nothing super enlightening in this short story (16 pages). I hoped Fade would share his story of the trauma in the previous book that keeps being nodded towards, but no such luck. Still left up to the imagination of the reader to figure out what happened.

I'd rate this a G.

" Restoration" was a fantastic short story from Fade's point of view. Fade. *Sigh* He's just too incredibly wonderful. Even though he's going through a rough patch with himself, I still love his character and have high hopes for he and Deuce.

This was super short, but I liked seeing what Fade is thinking after what he went through in Outpost. That would be traumatizing and I'm sure he has PTSD. It is helpful getting another side to the story, since the novels are all Deuce's point of view and she doesn't necessarily understand emotions because she wasn't raised that way. The ending definitely gave me hope for Fade and Deuce.

This was a perfect refresher before diving into Horde. It makes my heart ache for Fade, all over again <3

Don’t ever stop looking at me. I'm the shadow behind your light, and I might just disappear without you. I don't deserve you, but I can't give you up either.

I wouldn't recommend this. I understood enough why Fade struggled to face Deuce after his ordeal. I didn't need his inner thoughts of groveling and self-deprecation too. It ruined him for me. Ruined.
This is not a sissy series and I wanted Fade's voice to be more rougher, more like him, or at least the way Ms. Aguirre has represented him to us all this time. I did not like glimpsing his emotions, that just felt too gentle on a guy.
Fortunately, towards the end of this short novella, Fade rallies a little and I enjoyed seeing him put Stalker in his place.

Stalker - “And what do you think I'm after?”
“Her heart,” I said. “Which is too bad. You see...that's mine, and it always will be. Odd as it might seem, she'd rather have me broken than you whole.”

The other part that I was happy to see was how Deuce looks at Fade. She looks at him with soft and tender eyes and I think that's just precious.

It's been a while since I read the previous book in this series, so I was a bit lost when I went into this. It was very confusing, even when I started remembering details about the previous story. However, it did give us a look at Fade's thought processes and emotional state, so it made him a bit easier to connect with. I would recommend reading this right after Outpost, but it doesn't work as a standalone within the series.

Right then, she was my sole reason for living, even if I was doing my best to drive her away.

*sigh*

Oh Fade. You make me want to shake the crap out of you and then hug you until you can't breathe.

Restoration is a free short story can be read on the MacMillan website. Please be aware that it contains spoilers for Outpost so I definitely don't recommend reading it until after that book!

This story is told from Fade's point of view and it shows us exactly what was going on in his head at the end of Outpost. It was heartbreaking to see how depressed he was and how worthless he was feeling and as much as I was annoyed by his actions when I was reading the book this explains a lot and you can't help but feel sorry for him.

Edmund gives Fade a brilliant "daughter's boyfriend" speech which I think should earn him the Dad of the Year title. I also liked Fade's little dig at Stalker towards the end, it was good to see he's still got some fight left in him & I think he's going to need it for the next book. Restoration was a great addition to the series and I'm definitely looking forward to the remaining books.

This is a short story from Fade's perspective that takes place at the end of Outpost.
No new material, but provides more perspective about what is going on in Fade's mind at that crazy point in time... Which to me, didn't feel true to what someone in his situation would really be thinking. He is supposed to be a vulnerable, self-loathing, and completely broken character at this point. That did not really come across.
I feel like Aguirre could have dug a little deeper on this one. The story is only about 15 pages though, so I can't expect an all-access Fade expose, now can I? But it just felt like, okay we already know what Fade is supposed to say and do, so lets plug in some introspection and call it a day! I wanted more emotional turmoil which I know is in there! [Okay, perhaps I'm going overboard by claiming to know a character better than the author that created him. And perhaps it's my incredibly high expectations for this short story that made it fall short in my eyes.]

I love Fade and the Razorland series, but I deem this short story a frivolous add-on; there are no new crucial plot points. I feel like the reader's imagination is better equipped for filling in the blanks about Fade's psychological issues. The mystery of it all made it more intense.

That being said, I still appreciate the extra content, and will gobble up ANYTHING related to this series.

Ahhhhhhhhh my emotions

I just can't right now. I totally just cannot even.

Every time. Every single time, Aguirre! Fade and Deuce's story will forever be one of my favorites.
My heart was broken at the end of Outpost when Fade tried to distance himself from Deuce because of what happened, and then in Horde everything came together again so perfectly.

I love this trilogy. And I love Deuce and Fade. They're just so precious.
And this was a perfect little pick me up.

Thank you Ann Aguirre.

i happened upon this short story by accident and was ever glad that i did. most books are from a girl's point of view so it's nice find when the author decides to write from the man's point of view. it makes us girls know that we aren't the only ones who are sappy and feel broken. a highly recommended fun read.

Holy Hannah. Fade kills me in this story. KILLS ME. He's so terribly broken and unable to see any worth in himself. I feel for him. He's pushing away the one good thing in his life and it absolutely slays me. Heartbreaking and hopeful all at the same time.

This is exactly what I needed to get me in the mood for the third book. Kept putting it off, the second one broke my heart.

Hearing Fade's POV is great!! He is struggling with many things but this gives me hope for things to mend in the final book of the trilogy.

I love the pep talk with Edmund!! Just what he needed to hear!

A super-short (16 pages!) story that gives us Fade's POV of the evening when Deuce gets ready to leave Salvation to go get help for the town. (from Outpost) It's not something you have to read; You won't miss out on anything, but I think it just adds a little understanding of the inner workings of Fade's mind.

I really liked seeing Edmund come and have a chat with Fade. That really lets the reader see more of Edmund. How much he's come to care for Deuce. Momma Oaks has always been demonstrative in her feelings, but Edmund was always more circumspect. This little chat makes you realize just how deep his feelings are for Deuce. That's she's really important to him.

We also see the turmoil Fade's been dealing with after being taken by the Muties. We knew he was tormented by what he'd gone through, but now we know just how much he's hurting. I love seeing how he knows Deuce is the love of his life and when he makes the decision to fully support her. Ah! Sparks of life are back!

I especially enjoyed seeing him tell Stalker off. It wasn't much, but we now know that Fade has begun to heal. He's not going to give up on life quite yet. And definitely not give up on Deuce. Maybe there's hope for their relationship after all?

Just like the last line--

"Be patient, solnyshko moyo. I’m still here. And I’m coming back to you."

Now, I'm ready to start Horde.

B rating.

I liked this story from Fade's perspective. It has been a while since I read the other books in this series, but it all came back to me. This, for some reason, is a series that I cannot seem to forget. It invoked some interesting feelings and thoughts. It made me feel for the characters in a way that doesn't always happen to me.

I only gave it four stars because it could have been so much longer. There is so much to Fade and his story that I would love to learn. He is a character that truly impresses me with how he was developed.

Fade is so besotted with Deuce.

This short story makes me want to go back and reread the whole series. Aguirre has so much range as a writer, and I’m always so gobsmacked by it. Love her so much.

Least favorite part of the short story: toxic masculinity standards. Fade has some serious trauma. (Although I do love a tragic backstory).

The story is a little bit melodramatic, but this is set during the apocalypse with teenagers, so it fits the vibe.

This short story definitely isn’t necessary in order to enjoy the series, but it’s a nice addition nonetheless.

I mean, I get he's interesting and some of this was cute but.....men need to learn to EXPRESS THEMSELVES! Pushing people away and then not letting them move on and speaking harshly just for the sake of being mean is NOT OKAY!😤
I hated when he did this to Deuce in the novel, its no better in his pov, because he just seemed full of excuses. Interesting to learn her dad made him go with her though, unfortunately for Stalker lol

I enjoyed seeing Fade’s side of the aftermath of the freak kidnapping however I felt like his coming to terms with the trauma being condensed into a couple of days so that he’s ready to be useful to Deuce in the next book is a disservice to the character. Since this is just a short story to tag along to book 2 I’m hoping Fade gets the healing journey he deserves in the next book and we see his character deal with everything he has been through in a more realistic manner.
