Once More with Feeling
"There are people in the house. They have the children. What should we do?"

I was born into a world of horror... Well, not quite, but almost! To be more precise, my 'very sudden' arrival into this world came about via a broken cinema seat. It was a seat into which my heavily pregnant mother found herself wedged. Once it had collapsed beneath her bulk, the resulting chaos of attempting to free her - perhaps not surprisingly - induced a rather rapid labor.
Talk about a grand entrance.
I'm guessing it was something of a talking point among those present, and probably for many years after.
Oh, yeah, and the film that was showing? It was The Phantom Of The Opera!

I have had a fascination with all aspects of the horror genre since my childhood, and it is a major driving force in my desire to write entertaining stories.

Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria is my first novel; It's the story of Laura Bennett, who finds everything changes on the day a beautiful and mysterious stranger first enters her life...

A novel length re-imagining of J.S. Le Fanu's original novella, Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria draws on much of the original narrative, but also introduces an array of new Characters to bring a whole new level of horror, and tragedy, to the legend of Carmilla.

The novel is co-authored by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and David Brian.

Collections of my short stories can be found in the fantasy books Dark Albion, Kaleen Rae, and The Cthulhu Child.

Carmilla: A Dark Fugue is a short novella-like introduction to the world set in David Brian's novel, Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria. This was my first foray into the David Brian's work, and I was very much impressed with his use of language and writing style. This story takes us on an "adventure" with General Spielsdorf that involves both werewolves and vampires alike. As short as this was, it was enough to get my attention and get me to want to learn more about the general, and the world he is inhabiting. There were many questions this story raised, such as how the General came to join his "brothers", and the reason for the animosity between the two supernatural entities.

This was a delightful, smooth-reading story, and I plan on looking up the Brian's novel, Carmilla:The Wolves of Styria.

I feel guilty for not rating this higher, but I neither like nor am scared by werewolves, nor have I read the original work on which this is based (so why _did_ I read this?! I knew it would be worth it even with all those things considered--and it was free). As for the good: it is a fairly evocative story, containing a tragedy and scenes of gore and the grotesque which work well without excessive explication. And the prose I feel is very accurate and yet almost uncharacteristically profluent 1800s.

this was pretty much as described in the blurb. A stand alone story, but one which links to Carmilla - The Wolves Of Styria. It is actually a nice addition because the general is missing for a large chunk of the previous novel, and this enlightens us as to what he was getting up to. And he was up to some fairly disturbing things! A good read even for anyone who hasn,t yet read the other book.
Deserves 5stars.

Having previously read the novel around which this story is based, I was delighted to get this further insight into the turmoil afflicting General Spielsdlrf.

I read the free version hosted on the authors blog. A very good read.

A nice little story.

It's not too long but it's an interesting and well written tale. I'd definitely recommend it if you want a quick little horror read.

Covering some of the bizarre and horrific events which occur in the life of General Spielsdorf, this action packed little book will appeal to fans of werewolves, vampires, and revenants who roam the night.

This is a short, stand alone companion to Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria, and can be enjoyed even by those who haven't previously read the novel.

I read this short 'addition' after reading CARMILLA: THE WOLVES OF STYRIA. This story focuses on General Spielsdorf, and his antics while he was 'out of scene' during the main book. It works well as a stand alone story.

This is still and will always be one of the great Vampire stories of all time. A classic among classics. The female equivalent to Dracula. Throw in an amazing gothic backdrop and you have a story that stays with you. As you get to know the characters and legends, it becomes a tale of friendship, first love and unquestionable evil. You feel for these girls, the pain and joy they suffer is palpable. A gothic love story for the ages, with blood and death thrown in to make a very fast and enjoyable read.

The additional books after this original is fascinating. Author, David Brian has mashed the original with new material that follows the same characters. He has masterfully given life to the original gothic story. The characters have been fleshed out with more history and backgrounds of each person. It is amazing to be able to learn in detail how each character see’s and feels what is happening in their small Austrian town named Styria. It is a very boring place to live until it is plagued by a very strange illness that is effecting only young ladies of the village. The author also adds werewolf’s to the mix, which makes some great action filled pages. I liked how the book moves along by diary entries and letters back and forth between some characters. It definitely reminds me of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I really liked these books. The other 2 books are both written by Author, David Brian. The next book is “Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria” and “Carmilla: A Dark Fugue”. I read them in the order shown, the original, the wolves and last the fugue. If you know the original I think you could read the other 2 in whatever order you wish. They all center around Carmilla. Her story, the people that come in contact with her and the ways she chooses to destroy anyone around her.

I picked this up as it follows on from (or rather runs alongside)the events in Carmilla: The Wolves of Styria. I thought this was a really well written addition to the main novel. A strangely captivating story that manages to successfully combine old Gothic with modern gore. 5 plus stars.
