His Holiness The Dalai Lama: A Message of Spiritual Wisdom

Rate this book
"I always consider myself as a simple Buddhist monk. I feel that is the real me. I feel that the Dalai Lama as a temporal ruler is a man-made institution. As long as the people accept the Dalai Lama, they will accept me. But being a monk is something which belongs to me. No one can change that." --His Holiness the Dalai Lama

In October 2012, the Dalai Lama visited the Kurukulla Center for Buddhist Studies in Medford, Massachusetts and addressed approximately 1,800 residents from this diverse New England community.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of his Holiness' visit, Comcast NBCUniversal presents His Holiness The Dalai A Message of Spiritual Wisdom to inform readers about the impact he has around the world.

The Dalai Lama is a well-known figure, with millions of followers through social media channels, and within all parts of the globe. Yet his history, background, and the scope of his accomplishments often go unnoticed.

His Holiness The Dalai A Message of Spiritual Wisdom explains how the religious leader was first chosen in 1937 and provides an overview of his political and cultural history. It also celebrates the way he brings communities together through a message of peace and nonviolence.

Included are excerpts from the Dalai Lama’s address to attendees of the Kurukulla Center, discussion questions, a glossary of terms, and select resources.

In addition, the book also features an introduction by Ann Curry of NBC News, as well as her exclusive interview with the Dalai Lama on Today .

A great primer for the Dalai Lama's teaching, history and current status.

In short, the Dalai Lama said all the essence of the Buddha’s teachings can be summarized in the phrase, “If you can’t help others, at least don’t harm them.” This is not a particular religious theology but a belief common to all.

This little book was full of these wise sayings that do not evangelize or preach. The thoughts are just common sense and often the definition of a good life.

One of my prayer methods is contemplative and although it is not in anyway Buddhist, there are many similarities. Therefore, I was highly attracted to what he had to say

Therefore, I strongly recommend this little book.

I read the book when I was on a plane coming back to LAX from Iceland. The book is shorter than I thought, so I was able to finish it in total about 2 hours (not in 1 sitting). I really Dalai Lama's message about how to be a good person and help each other, and "if you can help others, at least don't do harm to them." I also like how he emphasizes on materials (money) and power are not something you should count on for ultimate happiness, but rather a warm-heartedness. It doesn't matter which religions you follow, it all comes down to the root of being a good person. Overall I enjoyed the reading.

The rebirth thing was new to me. It was exceptional and unbelievable for me that the same soul of the first Dalai Lama is reborn from time to time.

If you know nothing about the Dalai Lama and Buddhism or Tibitian Buddhism and you have a curiosity to know something about it then you should read this brief introduction. In this book you are going to know the whole process of choosing the next Dalai Lama, and how the Dalai Lama was reborn, again and again. And there is a bit of insight about the 13th and current Dalai Lama, his daily routines, schedules and diet.

The rebirth thing was new to me. It was exceptional and unbelievable for me that the same soul of the first Dalai Lama is reborn from time to time. The book is more contained with information and less with wisdom and inspiration.

There are many quotes of the Dalai Lama which made this short read a very valuable treasure. These quotes are very simple in language and still have a remarkable truthfulness and wisdom within.

There is a speech in the book which is addressed by the Dalai Lama where he tells his main agenda that he wants to spread happiness all over the world. He wants to make this world a place of love and hope where no one lies.

If you are not aware about the culture of Buddhism and their teachings then the teaching part of his speech is going to be a little tricky for you. Whichever part of teachings I was able to reckon was tremendously beneficial for the people who want to connect with spirituality or want mental peace.

This is a value adding book any age group who are eligible to read can give this short read a try.

Let me start my review by saying that I am a big believer in Christian particularity and I don't think 'all roads lead up the mountain.' Different religions and philosophies account for the world differently and have a different telos. They also have different understandings humanity is, and the problems that plague us.

On the otherhand, the greatest challenge to Christianity today is lives like 'His Holiness' the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama has called for greater tolerance, compassion for all of humanity. His life gives credence to his message. Here is one good guy.

This enhanced ebook combines the text of an address that the Dalai Lama gave in Kurukulla Center for Buddist Studies in Medford, MA in Oct, 2012 with biographical essays and video clips. There is also a video introduction with Journalist Anne Curry and clips from an interview she conducted with the Dalai Lama.

This collection is valuable because it gives a nice glance of what the Dalai Lama teaches and uses multimedia effectively to communicate his message. I demur from the Dalai Lama on various points but think it is important to know what other religions have to say, and what they have to teach us.

This is more of a brochure than a book, but a nice introduction to the structure of Buddhism, and some basic biographical information of the Dalai Lama followed by a transcript of a speech he gave at the Kurukulla center in Medford, MA(www.kurukulla.org). It also has a short interview with Ann Curry.
It is really basic information, but the absolute highlight of this book are the wonderful pictures included even in the kindle version. Great pictures of HH as a child, throughout his life, and a few of the gorgeous grounds of Kurukulla.

Received through Pixel of Ink as one of their free downloads.

“My religion is kindness.”

This is a 75 page book with excerpts from the Dalai Lama's address to an audience in Massachusetts some years ago. This is literally my first book on religion/spirituality/God or what have you,( not counting the countless Amar Chitra Kathas I grew up reading, i love them. Or theBhagwata Geeta that I attempted reading years ago as a teenager and gave up after 19 pages). I downloaded this purely because of the size, but don't regret it.

Save the first 10 pages (where they talk about the making of the Dalai Lama - he 'chooses his rebirth' himself), and the last 20 pages( where the literal meaning of the Buddhist core prayer is explained - I simply skipped the pages as there was no point - i would never understand), the actual discourse is quite nice to read. It's unlike any religious discourse - his core focus is on people, nature, kindness, learning, knowledge , irrespective of what religion you come from. That's so refreshing to hear from a religious leader, isn't it?

Some gems -

“Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival.”

One of the key Buddhist concepts is that of interdependence. Nothing exists by itself in a vacuum; humans and all other beings and the environment are inextricably interrelated. Whatever people do to the environment will inevitably affect them. Because the mind is so dependent upon the body, and the body is in turn dependent upon its surroundings, the world must be taken care of.

“Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.”

And my personal favourite -
“The goal is not to be better than the other man, but your previous self.”

Go ahead, tick the book as read in your list, I've practically summarised it all :)

I am delighted that I found this book; the Dalai Lama and his story is fascinating. This is a great introduction to the whole world of Buddhism and the leadership of the Dalai Lama. He must be a brilliant man because he speaks clearly and elegantly about the most simple things. I know that English is not his native language and yet the words he used to exhibit a deep understanding of English.

I particularly liked that the book explained how the Dalai Lama is chosen, a thumbnail summary of Tibet's history, and why the Dalai Lama lives in India. Then, there is a copy of the speech the Dalai Lama gave in Massachusetts in 2013. Finally, there was a short interview. I thought the book was just the right combination of text and photos.

This was a very readable book which kept my interest from cover to cover. It was incredibly inspiring and if everyone read this book and followed its teachings, this world would be a much better place. The message in gives, it made me think of my own life and how I can be a better person in my own world. I honestly say it is more inspiring to me than the Bible ever was. It tells it like it is and flat out tells us what we need to do to live a better life in showing love to others. I recommend it 100%.

I’ve read other books by/about HH the Dalai Lama that I thought were better, that said, I think this is a good intro into his life, and how he ended up where he’s at today. It’s also a good intro to Tibetan Buddhism.

My biggest complaint was the total lack of editing. This very well may be a direct transcript of what he said, complete with uhs, aahs, and grammatical errors. I think Comcast NBCUniversal would have done him, and the readers a service with just minor editing (verb tense, primarily).

It’s a quick read, and lots of goodness to be found there.

I needed some light reading after the book on serial killers! Not sure about the light reading though! This is the transcript of a message of spiritual wisdom to a buddhist group in Meford, ma. He started by talking about the beginnings and types of buddhism and ending up with kindness out there in the world and to worry only we need to worry. Nice man, nice religion!

After watching the movie Seven years in Tibet, I was encouraged to learn more about his Holiness the Dalai Lama. This oral biography provides the information that I had hoped to receive. There’s even references to reincarnation in some of the discussions. I found those quite interesting. Although there is much more to learn, this was a good start.

Thanks to this short book, I become more aware of the concept of spiritual wisdom by the Dalai Lama. I would say that I did not fully understand it but I think it was a wonderful way to live a life and to introduce kindness and compassion into this world. I will soon read more relevant books about the Dalai Lama.
