This book features 50 original riddles with one-word solutions. A word is described atypically, sometimes using metaphors or quirks of language as misdirection, and you must deduce the word. Many of the riddles take a poetic form reminiscent of older, traditional riddles.Revisions to added answer links beneath each riddle (March 17, 2014), replaced or improved some riddles (January 8, 2015), added notes for each answer page (July 24, 2015).
I found this to be a very enjoyable read. Some of the riddles are easy to understand, while others take a little bit more thought provoking put into them. Either way, I enjoyed deciphering what each riddle might mean to me as an individual. Most riddles and poems can be taken in many different directions, and mean something different to each individual reader
Some of the riddles are short and straight to the point, even if I can't understand what point the author is trying to make. My favorite riddle is number 12:
Not a burden for its weight and daily carried out, he who takes it wishes it had never come about.
To me this is talking about burdens that weigh heavily one someones shoulders, a burden that affects someone on a daily basis. For those who the burden affects, they wish it had never existed because of the overwhelmingness that it has put on themselves.
It's a short and to the point type of book that anyone can read while standing in line at the grocery store. Most are pretty thought provoking and will be left inside you while you try to find the hidden meaning behind each one. Others, are more apparent, but are just as enjoyable to read. I rate this book a 5/5 for a great riddle book that I found to be a fun and interesting read.
“The Riddle Chest” by Sef Daystrom at first glance looks like any other book of jokes and riddles. One need only open to the first page to realize these riddles are along the lines of what the mythical Minotaur, or a troll guarding his bridge, might ask as the condition by which one may pass unmolested. As frequently was the case in mythology, mere mortals generally would be stumped by the riddle and subsequently reduced to a meal.
“The Riddle Chest” is not life-critical as in mythology, but the riddles themselves are every bit as difficult to comprehend and answer. Forget the notion that a ‘riddle’ should be funny. None of these is particularly humorous, but each is seriously mind numbing. Perhaps a better title for the book might have been “Brain Stumpers” or, more accurately, “Things to Make You Feel Really Stupid”. Of the 50 riddles included, I successfully answered between 5 and 10 of them… and initially I was proud of myself for getting that many correct!
“The Riddle Chest” is a book that would probably work best if you take it one riddle at a time, and work at it like a dog worrying a bone, before moving on to the next. All of these are solvable; there are no trick questions included. They will, however, require varying degrees of thought and a good bit of ‘thinking outside the box’ to arrive at the appropriate answer. If you were to work on a single riddle until you solved it, before moving on to the next, this little book might last a couple months before you either complete it or give up in frustration.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Sef Daystrom is the only person on the planet capable of answering all of these! “The Riddle Chest” is bound to give your brain a serious workout, while providing hours of thought-provoking entertainment. “The Riddle Chest” will make an ideal gift for the deep thinker in your family or circle of friends. However, don’t be surprised if subsequently they carry a bit of resentment against you, for making them feel stupid!
Sef Daystrom has composed or collected a brilliant selection of mind-stumping riddles guaranteed to clear the cobwebs from your brain cells, and put them to work… quite possibly for the first time in years! If you are up to the challenge, “The Riddle Chest” is the perfect book to wake up those long-unused brain cells and sharpen your thinking skills. Personally, I cannot accept solving only 5 or 10 out of 50. I will be pondering these riddles for some time to come… I have a lot of brain cells that have just been taking up space for years! It’s time to put them back to work.
Okay, this might have been a fine book, but so far I got only 2 of the riddles in my guesses (I'm not yet giving up on the whole book full of riddles, though!) There are so many possibilities for the answers! I just don't follow many of them. Maybe I'm just not smart enough or something... Anyway, I admire the person who had the mind capacity to make such interesting riddles, but I just don't get the answers, no matter how much I contemplate them. Hmm, this book is free, though... I would recommend this strictly to people who are able to solve riddles. I clearly can't :)
This volume contains a selection of the author's own riddles. Each one meets certain criteria he has established, and each answer is one word.
I was able to guess a few of them correctly, but they are very challenging. Think of them as a whetstone to sharpen your mind. You won't find your usual "What has eyes but can't see" in this book.
it made me want to fall asleep the riddles are stupid hey still looking for someone to do #auts friend and I'll tell you the guys name that's emo ill still look just someone do it
This is a pretty good book. Some of the answers could be different things for some of the riddles. Some of the riddles are really hard and few were easy to me. I am a novice at them. Enjoy!
