Lil Eller, sheriff of Crazy, Virginia, wakes up in the trunk of a car, and things go downhill from there. Lil’s been kidnapped by persons unknown, for reasons unknown. Alone in a remote mountain cabin in the dead of winter, Lil finds herself with few resources and fewer chances to escape. Her feline deputy, Boris, is good at clawing people who threaten her, but he’s not much of a bloodhound. Will her two human deputies, Tom and Punk, find her before it’s too late?
Shannon Hill lives in the commonwealth of Virginia and treasures her privacy. She loves cats, chocolate, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although she is not nearly as awesome as Sheriff Lil Eller, her cats are as awesome as Boris. One of them even enjoys riding in the car. (Seriously. Who could make that up?)
Lil starts the book in a trunk, having been kidnapped from her home and is later locked in a moonshiner's hut in the middle of winter with a few sticks of wood and 3 cans of soup. A ransom is paid but she is not released. Despite this she is discovered, suffering from hypothermia, a few days after being kidnapped. As the victim she can't investigate. The good ol' boy county sheriff has the case & he is lousy at his job and doesn't really seem to care who did it. So Lil, her human deputies and her cat, Boris, begin to investigate on their own. A suspect ends up dead and they think they are on the right track, but a run in with Lil's speeder nemesis Josie gets Lil thinking hard about the whole situation. How had they managed to grab her in her basement in the first place? Why didn't Boris attack her kidnappers? He's quick to defend her in every other situation. That pretty much narrows her suspect list down to people Boris (and Lil) trust & consider friends. Suddenly she is on her own, with no idea who to trust. Plenty of suspects & twists. Great mystery.
I don't buy a lot of self-published ebooks as most of them are very pedestrian but someone I have a lot of time for is Shannon Hill's Boris & Lil books. Humour is peppered throughout her stories but doesn't hit you on the head, throw away lines that make you chuckle. Good characters and she builds an interesting small town world which is Crazy, Virginia.
Sheriff Lil has her hands full with the feud between the Ellers and Littlepages, she belongs to both clans and tries to keep the peace with the help of Boris, a feral cat as her Deputy. In this instalment Lil is kidnapped with things getting a little too close to home for comfort forcing Lil to consider who she can truly trust. Shannon paints a convincing portrayal of a small town girl frustrated with her prospects and the choices she makes.
Another enjoyable read in the Crazy/Lil and Boris series. as with the first two in the series, this one continues with quirky, likable characters, good plot line and nice mystery. Ms.Hill spins a good tale and the story moves along at a quick pace. Poor Lil has to suspect those close to her heart and work in this one. And rightly so as it turns out. Good book for a lazy day in or out on the beach. enjoying this series and look forward to the next one. All we need now is a little romance for our girl Lil since Boris isn't looking. recommend for fans of a light mystery with a good amount of humor thrown in.
Loving this series! Lil is definitely my kind of people and I love Boris. Just read this as fast as I can so I can continue the series. Well written and it just flows.
Lil is kidnapped and almost dies of hypothermia. Her Eller relatives paid the ransom of $10 million dollars to rescue her, or did they? Who had the insider knowledge to be able to catch her unaware and survive Boris's wrath? The sheriff wants to investigate, but since she was the victim, can't. Frustration and lack of trust mix with the usual traffic violations and domestic disturbances in Crazy, VA. This cozy police procedural will appeal to fans of small towns and cats. Number three in an entertaining series.

I am so enjoying this series. I love Ms. Hill's style of writing. The crimes are not over the top and they are solved using good old knowledge and leg work. I enjoy Lil and Boris. They have such a sweet relationship and Boris is always ready to jump into the fray to defend his person. The usual cast of characters are back. Aunt Marge and Roger and the others. Just a really great series!
Sheriff Lil gets kidnapped! She survives but, finds it very hard to see why her. Then she discovers that a ransom as demanded of her estranged relatives.
(Several words of warning: There are very mild spoilers for the book down toward the end, but nothing an astute reader couldn’t figure out from the description and the genre.)
I figured that, as it’s a whole new year and all, that it was time to pay a third visit to Lil Littlepage-Eller, Boris, and the rest of the free-form asylum also known as Crazy, VA. So far, the Lil & Boris series has been a nice series of comfort nibbles with inhabitants I’ve always described as well-characterized, from Sheriff Lil herself right down to the local drunk. I’ve now read three of these books, and Crazy’s and her cast of characters are starting to feel like the sort of familiar faces that make me, at least, want to sink right down into the book and lose myself for a few hours.
This trip was engaging, entertaining, amusing, a little heartbreaking. But, at the same time, the read wasn’t quite what I expected.
I realized, as I chewed through the last few chapters in under an hour, that Hill is really exceptional at characterization. Things do not go back to normal for Lil once she’s back in town: she’s struggling with an inability to trust, for one thing, which only gets made worse when she starts narrowing down suspects. And, officially, she’s not even on the case — Sheriff Rucker is, and she knows he can’t be trusted.
And in Crazy, as in real life, there are always loose ends.
OMG! Lil got kidnapped and now they have to try to figure out whodunit with her not able to take charge. That leaves County Sheriff Rucker in charge, and even Rosco P. Coltrane and or his dog would have a better chance of finding the truth than Rucker! Heaven help the folks of Crazy because Rucker won't! Both Lil and Boris are spitting mad before this gets resolved, with a few real corkers thrown in the works in the meantime. Read It. funny and delightful as always.
Lil wakes to find herself tied up in the trunk of a car. Meanwhile in Crazy a ransom demand is delivered shortly after she missed. All her friends react as expected and nothing gets done. Ellers decided to play the ransom planning getting it back from their insurance. The book is funny and amusing as the story develops. The ending is surprising.
TW: kidnapping, violence, murders, racism & Islamophobia (not from main character), ableism - still the same "town is aptly named" style, but deals p well with a character using a prosthesis
Still an excellent read, but this was... I guess is say darker than the first two. The ending tries for the same WELP LIFE'S BACK TO NORMAL! The first two have, and it rings a little hollow.
The third in the series and I, again, could not stop reading and laughing. The characters are well drawn and hilarious. I think I have to read the last one, even though it's on my Kindle, because I will have no more to look forward to. I hope the next one comes soon! Plan on reading and reading the lot.
Been reading this series and enjoying it so much. Like the town, the characters, the plots are not too far fetched, especially if you were born and raised in a small Southern town as I was.
Really enjoy the personality of Boris the cat. He is well written and does not dominate the action, but compliments it. Looking for a cozy with charm, this is it.
Shannon Hill can spin a tale ( or is that a tail?) that keeps you laughing and completely engrossed, believing in the characters while working to solve the mystery. A gifted writer, you'll be looking for more of these Crazy books. Sit back and relax, book 3 is pure entertainment!
Once again, we return to the tiny town of Crazy, VA, where Lil is the Sheriff and Boris (the cat) is her Deputy. Shannon Hill continues to fill her books with quirky, enjoyable characters whom I've come to love. Highly recommended.
Boris holds these books together. Ill is a perfect companion for him. He just needs talk and let us readers what he really thinks. I'm working my way thru the books. Very good.
I'm really liking this series. The cat (Boris) is great and Lil has a good sense of humor. I was surprised by the "bad guy" in this one. Looking forward to the next one.
