The Wounded

Rate this book
You think you’re in control. That it’s your hands on the reins. But I’m starting to think either someone else is driving, or the reins are attached to nothing. Just flapping and snapping in the breeze. What could be simple, never is.

Rosa doesn’t want to get used to being separated from Joseph, from Orry. So she must find the strength to battle her way back to her family, while mustering the courage to face her father, his secrets.

With her best friend, Rash, by her side, she feels blessed and cursed. He is her saving grace, but will Joseph accept him and forgive her for leaving?

Rosa must pull these threads together as she hacks her way to The Wall with the aid of her new companions but, heartbreakingly, without the one person she’d planned to save.

Finding her way home is only the beginning. The biggest changes, the shocking truths, are waiting, hovering over the town like a menacing vapor.

The Wounded have waited, nursed, and been dormant for too long. And now they’re coming… dragging the ghosts of their lost ones behind them.

Lauren Taylor has managed to achieve the seemingly impossible...every sequel in The Woodlands series somehow exceeds the others! In a literary world where YA post-apocalyptic and dystopia sequels frequently disappoint, Lauren Taylor has hit this one out of the ballpark. To say that I'm totally infatuated with this series is a gross understatement and I was beyond giddy with excitement to receive an ARC copy of The Wounded. With that being said, if this book had failed me in any way, I would have been the first to boo it. I'm happy to report, there isn't a trace of disappointment for this reader. Instead, I'm just feeling that warm, satisfied glow of having savored the best fiction has to offer.

So why did I love the Wounded? I've said it before and I'll say it again, Lauren writes with such poetic imagery without being pompous or leaving the reader feeling like they are trudging through an adjective polluted indecipherable mess. Her writing is flawless, poignant and just so completely beautiful. The post-apocalyptic world she created took my breath away in its savagery and waste as it continues to ruin lives hundreds of years later. I could taste the bitter ash, feel the ravaging hunger and despair of the survivors, the wounded.

The one thing that I value above all else is strong leading and supporting characters that are complicated and flawed. You know the ones you want to throw your arms around one minute and then slap them across the face in the next? Whether it's Rosa and Joseph or the villainous Este, these characters, their relationships and the depth of their feelings are as real to me as a best friend or that childhood bully you still loathe. Now if all of that praise isn't enough, the plot surely stopped my heart a dozen times and the turn of a page became my life line, a defibrillator that shocked me back to life as I was frequently too stunned to continue. Yes, this book is that good! The best part of all, this series does not stop at book three (yay for Lauren Taylor being an original) and I for one can't wait to read what comes next!

How can you love someone and hate them so much at the same time? The answer: read a book. A more specific answer: read this series of books. Lauren Nicolle Taylor, you're on my Watch List, for better or worse.

Summary:

Rosa didn't get what she came for. With the sole purpose of returning to Pau Brazil being the rescue of her mother and infant sibling, what she came away with was a battered body and a lucky find in her friend, Rash. Then there is the not-so-welcome revelation that her father is the Spider they were sent to rescue, and his loyalty has been to the Survivors much longer than Rosa's been alive.

Feeling overwhelmed and slightly heartbroken, all Rosa wants to do is return to Joseph and her son. To be safe at home, and plan for the next phase of this warfare.

But the next phase hit them first.

When the Spider collectors return from their mission, it is to find their lives empty and deserted. The others are gone. Possessions left behind. And the healing machine destroyed.

Knowing where the only safe hiding place is, they set off immediately for the Hole--a giant, radioactive remnant of a distant war. There, Rosa is relieved to find both of her boys safe and sound. But others are missing and her family is hanging on by tattered threads.

The once strong and determined Survivors are now the Wounded. With each reminder of loved ones lost, they are unwilling, as of yet, to pick themselves up. Instead, they are ready to rest, lick their wounds, and drown in their misery. Which leads them to the Monkey City … and those people that Apella knew actually existed there all along.

It is not enough to wallow, however. And when tragedy strikes in a way to pierce the heart of every living creature, Rosa is simply done. Reciting their sworn oath, Rosa reminds them all what it means to be a Survivor. And she's determined to take the fight back to the Woodlands.

Initial Thoughts:

By the time I finished this book, I couldn't even remember where this one began versus where the last one ended. Thankfully, the publisher provided summary allowed my memory to distinctly separate the two fragments and I am once more able to give a somewhat-coherent review.

Which makes me grateful to the author. It means that each of these books flow so well together, that it reads more like one book than three. Bravo to Ms. Taylor!

(Also, I'm feeling kind-of shell-shocked by the ending. Again. Are you happy with yourself?)

Characters:

I don't need to get into how much I love Rosa for every one of these reviews. But since I'm here…

Just kidding. I love Rosa. We'll leave it at that.

Joseph is his own typical, lovable self in this as well. So, again, no real need.

Now … Apella and Alexei… I hated you both, once upon a time. To the point where I happily would have throttled you both with my bare hands. But now… Not so much. Especially you, Apella. You are gracious and self-sacrificing in a way that is very genuine. It does not seem contrived in any way. And after all you've done for Rosa and Joseph… You have my forgiveness, as well as my gratitude for being such a heartbreakingly complex character throughout the entire series.

Rash, you do comedic relief like no other. Especially when it is truly needed. Thank you for making us all just a little less tense.

Again, thank you to a wonderful cast of characters for making this book so worth investing my time into.

Oh, and Este: HAHAHAHAHAHA! You deserved that and so much more.

Plot & Setting:

Wonderful visionary skills abound here. The world building continues to be sharp and tangible with each new setting. And there were quite a few new places to explore in this novel. Between creepy tunnels to charred highways, it was a mental movie-watching experience. One I absolutely adored.

Again, no formulaic plot arc to this--just how I like it. There are beginnings. There are climaxes. There are resolutions. (Plural.) And then there's that bloody cliffhanger. (Aren't authors grand?)

Also, as much as I love this series, I do feel the need to stress that is character-carried and less plot-oriented. This is about things happening and how they are reacted to. So the emphasis is never really on the plot in itself. (Just so you're all fully aware of what you agree to when you decide to allow this author and her characters to emotionally mangle you.)

Writing Style:

I absolutely love Ms. Taylor's writing style. Since this is first person perspective, you get to see Rosa in all of her full, dysfunctional catastrophes. And you get to feel the same frustrations and bear the same dark weight upon your shoulders as she is forced to carry. It's a very tangible style and I'm glad to experience it.

Overall Opinion:

Definitely recommended. The entire series. I'm incredibly invested in this series and would love to have others to geek out to with this. So I think more of my friends need to read this. (Ahem. Hint, hint. Nudge, nudge.)

A sensational sequel that’s remarkably outstanding and highly addictive!

THE WOUNDED is the third instalment within the Woodlands series, revolving around a post-apocalyptic/ deliciously dark distopian setting in which a striking protagonist leads the way. With every new edition in the Woodlands series, Lauren N Taylor seems to exceed expectations by producing another book of breathtaking proportions. This compelling saga is so hauntingly beautiful and deeply affecting that it gets ‘under your skin’ so as to linger upon the mind long after reading. To say that I am hooked on this book would be an understatement of my fervent enthusiasm, for the well-written story containing a cast of distinctive characters. Whisked off into a world of wonder and spellbinding secrets, I was once more taken on an incredible journey of such magnitude as to leave me in awe! The impacting resonance within the richly evocative narrative is so stunning, it really emphasises why Distopian is so popular. The ultimate question of what lengths one would go to in order to save those you loved is really highlighted in this profoundly poignant tale.

Rose will always fight to get her family back, but this time her love for her family may get her into more trouble…

THE WOUNDED tugs at the heartstrings by exploring the power of love and how this single emotion alters and defines our lives. Character-driven and action-packed this noteworthy novel is one that will delight fans of Divergent and the hunger games! What makes this series stand-out is how the authenticity and realism is so acute, you are able to connect with the characters on such a personal level as to make you feel a part of their story. Rose’s journey of self-discovery is very moving and full of heartfelt sincerity and depth, which many teens and YA readers will instantly draw from. Left shocked and stunned by the dramatic cliffhanger ending, I cannot praise such an accomplished author for a really well written, assured tale.

I cannot wait to read more in ‘The Woodlands’ series and look forward with eager enthusiasm and anticipation as to the final instalment!
(Note: this is a mature romance and so not suitable for very young readers)

lauren out did her self on this one, I didn't think the series could get any better but she proved me wrong. it took me away from reality and put me right there with rosa and all the other characters I have grown to love so much. it's a tear jerker. I found myself holding my breath and praying right along side the survivors, and laughing along with them as well. There is so much I didn't see coming, I love that about this book, most of the time you can predict what the characters will do or react to a situation but rosa keeps you on your toes. book by book, layer by layer we see the real rose emerge, grow and grab the reigns of a life she was forced into. then there's Joseph, a man who seems to be fearless and calm on the outside but in reality its only a coping mechanism for him, we get to see a more vulnerable side to him. The wounded takes you deeper into each character ,stripping them down revealing the emotional turmoil that has taken hold of their lives. this book is a must read I would recommend it to anyone who can read.

The Woodland series keeps getting better and better with each book. There is a lot of pain and struggles but also the development of more love and value to relationships. I was able to feel the hurt and joy the characters went through. I felt my heart break and excitement grow for some of the intense moments. Another BIG cliff hanger but it left me wanting to know what happens next more than the other two cliff hangers. I was on the edge of my seat when it came to life and death of a few of the characters and some with the community as a whole. I don't do spoilers but this one is by far the best yet. Now more than anything I am committed to the next book without question. As with the others, this has a lot of things that are not suitable for sensitive people. A lot of death and abuse is throughout this book.

WOW!! We are once again whisked into the world of Rosa as she tries to get to, protect, fight for and find peace with her family. But there is tension growing within all of the wounded, they need to fight for those they have lost and for those they can't stand to lose.

Book 3 continues just as we left the characters in book 2. It is once again full of losses and love. Another epic dystopian that really explores how far you would be willing to go to save and protect your family. I was captivated by the story Lauren had continued and once again, I am at the point where I can't wait for more. :) Happy reading everyone x

In the last book, Rosa finished her quest to rescue her mother and found her father for the first time in years, instead. But that doesn't mean she is happy to see him. Rosa, her father, and the team return to their home in the wilderness only to find the city leveled by a bomb from the Woodlands. Where is Joseph, Orry, and their friends, and how are they going to rebuild?

I can't decide whether I did or did not like this book better than the others in the series. I think the others were written better - more interesting, more concise, perhaps. But those ones were so sad. Every time something even slightly happened in those books, it was immediately dashed by a horrible situation. I had problems with those books because I wanted them to stay happy, or at least content, for a little while. They were depressing. But this one was no so depressing. Yes, there were ups and downs, but I enjoyed it more because the tone of the novel was a little more uplifting.

Some of the things that happened in The Wounded were a mother's and wife's worst nightmare. They were terrible, but were a glimpse of the horrors of real life in the midst of the dystopian setting. I won't tell exactly what they were, to avoid spoilers, but I will say that it was all too realistic.

I enjoyed this novel and recommend it to dystopian fans.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I think I loved this one even more than the other books in the series. It's hard to do, but this series just gets better and better with each book, unlike some series that kind of lose steam in the middle. Well never fear, because there is no losing steam here!

I have absolutely LOVED the character development of Rosa. When the series first started, I wasn't sure I liked her. She was angry and impulsive. But I still liked that the author made her this way because that meant she wasn't perfect. I still remember her as the angry teenager, made pregnant against her will and pushing Joseph away because she didn't think she deserved him. And she was adamant that she did not want kids at all. Well now she is such an amazing mother and you can tell she absolutely adores her son. And her relationship with Joseph has grown into something strong and deep. I love their relationship.

This book was just crazy with action. There were times when not much happened, but there was some character stuff happening at the time, so it was okay. There was Rosa and her dad and then there were just so many twists and so much tragedy and heartbreak in this one. And that cliffhanger . . . . argh! It was just so intense. And Lauren Nicolle Taylor's writing is extraordinary. I first fell in love with her with her book, Nora and Kettle. Even though these are very different types of books, her writing is no less poetic and remarkable. Wonderful read!

Not my favourite of the series so far. I know this is YA but there was a bit too much teen relationship drama for me. The ending slightly makes up for it.

Despite the controversy over Rosa's character (let's face it: she has a strong personality, and we probably wouldn't get along very well), I thought it was realistic for all the trauma she has gone through. I actually thought Clara in the first book was some sort of lovable freak of nature. How does one go through such horrific things (like being pulled away from your family, forced artificial insemination) and still be nice and pleasant? One would become a tiger, trying to protect whatever they have left.

And that's exactly what Rosa is. She is a protective tiger, ever so ready to protect her new-found family. Following her adventures from the second novel, she has become reunited with her dad, Pelo, but holds resentments against him for abandoning her as a child for the cause. With father and daughter reunited once more, they have to go back to The Wall, where the Survivors live. The path is paved with dangers, and once they return, they have to figure out what to do.

One of the most beautiful things about this series is the concept of an alternate family, one that Rosa has found among the Survivors and formed with a group of people of many different temperaments. There is no conventional, close-knit biological family, such structures had been destroyed by the Superiors by separating each generation from the previous one after the children come of age.

Another concept that is more deeply explained here is the All Kind versus One Kind. The All Kind "look" idealized by the Superiors features black hair, a particular "caramel"-toned skin, and bright, blue eyes, the supposed mixture of of features from different races into one All Kind race. Which is bogus, since blue eyes are a recessive trait. As a result, Rosa has noticed Woodlands soldiers with "unnaturally blue" eyes that look watery or irritated due to the use of contacts. Her skin is seen as too dark, and marks her as One Kind, with unique phenotypes not shared with the All Kind.

We get a view of the larger world that the Rosa, Joseph, and their friends live in. It's not just Superiors vs. Survivors; there are countless factions out there, and we get to meet some of these scattered groups of people who function outside the two forces.

One thing I would have liked to see more of was a larger back story to Apella, since she is on the cover. She remains this side character, obviously tormented with guilt. She is redeemed in the end, but for the most part, her role in the novel is defined by what she does for Rosa (even though she is heroic and noble) as opposed to her own secret past. She dies a mystery, which I wouldn't mind so much if she weren't on the cover.

There are a few questions I have about the characters' knowledge of certain cultural references. I'm not sure how prominently religion is taught in schools, but Rash makes a Biblical reference about Samson (177), and I blinked because it wasn't something I'd have expected him to know.

For the most part, Taylor is graceful and adept at describing Rosa's emotions but some lines in this novel make me giggle:

"I hadn't breathed in minutes" (203). ...So wouldn't she be dead?

"...my own arteries splitting inside me" (302). WHOA there. Wouldn't you be dead, Rosa?

"The air was as cold as an icicle stabbing my eyes when I woke" (311). Okay. Granted, this was a simile, and therefore truly figurative. But if this were truly how cold it was, Rosa would not have described her coldness in a few sentences as, "My body shook a little" (311). If the air were that cold, I wouldn't just shiver; I would be incapacitated. Or maybe I'm just a San Diegan wuss when it comes to cold.

I get that it was intended to be figurative (I hope, otherwise Rosa would be a walking, asphyxiated mess of exploding arteries), but they are described literally and therefore these lines ultimately gave my mind a funnier picture.

Overall, I enjoyed the storytelling in this novel a lot. Here, there is a clear direction, a definite purpose to the Survivors' actions, propelling them forward. The suspense kept me turning the pages, intrigued by the characters and what they were capable of. I could just pop open the book on my e-reader and be sucked right into the story.

The Wounded has become my favorite book in this series so far, and I look forward to the fourth installment.

When I first read The Woodlands, I really didn't know what to expect. The first few pages are little slow, and I really wasn't sure where it was going. Oh my gosh, I am so glad that I picked it up to read. The author, Lauren Nicolle Taylor described a world that could really happen. The Woodlands wasn't just another dystopian novel.
We were introduced to a character named Rosa. Rosa is a 16 year old girl who hates her life at home, and doesn't do well under the oppression of the Woodlands. She opts to go to school at 16, rather then 18, which would be the start of the beginning of her adult life, where she will be tested and trained for a job. Within a few months, Rosa is no longer being trained for a job for the rest of her life, but was forced to become pregnant in a breeding program designed by the leaders of The Woodlands.
In the Wall Rosa and Joesph are back. Rosa is still coming to terms with all the horrors of the Woodlands, loving Joesph and becoming a mother. In the Wall, she is also learning how to be free.
The Wounded... I don't even know how to review it. I finished readng the book a few weeks ago and have been thinking of a way to review it. It was just that amazing of a book! First of all, the cover choice is amazing. Without giving it away, the woman on the cover is someone that actually becomes really close to to Rosa and helps her grow. I think the author made the right choice on who to select for the cover.
In this book, Rosa is reunited with her friend from school Rash, and someone she thought she lost, her father. She is adjusting to having her friend in her life, but also her father. She thought he abandoned her when she was younger. She also learns some truths behind the Woodlands that changes her life.
The reader can either hate Rosa or love her. I personally love her! She is just one of those characters that will have you begging for more. I once asked the Ms. Taylor when the newest book was coming out because I was having withdrawls from the Rosa and Joesph. I am currently having withdrawls again, because I am hoping book 4 will be coming out soon.
From page one to the last was amazing. The writing is excellent. This is a dystopian series that is a must read! Lauren Nicolle Tayor is an author that has not disappointed with her books. I am really looking forward to more books in the Woodlands series and any other books that she may write.

Full review can be found here

In this, the third book of The Woodlands series, I had hoped that the momentum would continue, but a lot of "middle" books just can't keep up the same level of excitement while still having enough suspense left for the pending final book. This is unequivocally not the case for The Wounded. This book somehow managed to outdo its predecessors, not a small feat considering how wonderful I found them both.

First, the action does not stop. But not in that annoying, can't-keep-up kind of way, in that perfect flow way. There is enough down time in the book so that the reader doesn't feel overwhelmed, but never too much as to cause the mind to wander. There were twists and turns that I truly never saw coming (and admittedly, one or two that I did, but that is to be expected), and lots of questions answered while still leaving enough unanswered for the final book.

Then there is the character development. I feel like we see a lot of growth, and more importantly, a lot of reflection. I love that Rosa and Joseph are both flawed, and that they both realize that they are flawed. During the course of the events in the book, I could actually picture a real person having the same emotions and inner turmoil as Rosa and Joseph. I like that they weren't always feeling the bravest, or the most in control. It made them much more likable and relatable. In addition, the supporting characters were wonderful as always. There is something special about each of them, and it makes you truly invested in each one, not only in Rosa and Joseph.

In addition, the writing itself was absolutely lovely. I have always enjoyed the way Lauren writes, but the writing in The Wounded was absolutely exceptional. I had vivid images in my head the entire time, and it was an absolute pleasure to be reading the book. Quite simply, I did not want it to end.

The Wounded, the 3rd book in the woodlands series, is just as brilliant as the first two books in the series. Book 3 may actually be the most intense so far.
First – if you are considering buying book 3, you will be just as engrossed in the story as the first two books. Tell your family, friends and pets to prepare to be neglected, the wounded will consume you, lol.
Rosa, Joseph, Rash and the other survivors continue to develop throughout this story, and some new characters are introduced which shake things up a bit. I loved the expansion of the post-apocalyptic world, even as ugly and cruel as it was. Laurens writing has a way of making you feel like you can actually see the places they are living in or traveling through; to the point there are moments where you just want to look away but cant.
There were a few chapters written from Josephs perspective and I actually loved them. It was great to see how the language softened and we were finally treated to the world through his eyes. (Don’t worry; there is no allegiant tragedy here).
The story does end on another jaw dropping cliff hanger, but that is what I expected as it is not the final book in the series. It gives you plenty to think about while waiting for book 4!
All summed up, this is another 5 star book that will not disappoint you. Your heart will pound, tears will fall, and certain pages will leave you feeling overwhelmed with despair. Love and hope battle with death and anguish continually throughout book 3, which leaves you with the impression you are not just reading some “story”, you are following a group of wounded through life.
Well done Lauren Nicole Taylor, The Woodlands is the best series I have ever read.

Rosa will always fight to get her family back. But, this time, her love for her family may get her into more trouble.

Another stunning, heartbreaking book by Lauren Nicolle Taylor! (Seriously Lauren, can you get any better? ;-) )

I’ve said before that I see a lot of myself in Rosa (even more so in this book with her long-lost father returning), and I love characters that are outspoken and brazen. Some people don’t, but I do because it makes them unique and “real” to me. But with this book — uh, what can I say?? It surpassed my every expectation again (which were high!). It was fast-paced and so enjoyable. This is one of my favourite series’.
The ending shocked me, but I do love a good cliff hanger. I can’t wait to read the final instalment in The Woodlands series!

This series continues to amaze me. The author does such a great job of describing the settings and feelings of every character that it is easy to get lost with them. I had to keep my sunglasses on when reading on the train because there are so many emotional moments in The Wounded, both happy and sad. This is by far one of the best dystopian fiction stories I have read. I really can not wait for the last book, I need to know what happens to all my favorite people next! The Wanted is set to come out in October (so far) which is great because it'll be my birthday present to myself. ahhh so excited.
I could really see this as a movie, I know that movies tend to cheapen the books by editing out big chunks of the story or completely changing some of the elements but if there were a way to translate every single part of these books into an on screen version, that would be so awesome.

Amazing! This is by far one of the best books I've read ever! The imagery and the words Lauren used just put you right in the story and it was like I lived it with them. The last chapters had my heart pounding so hard. I don't even know how to put into words how amazing this series is. It just keeps getting better with each book. I'm planning on buying paperback copies because it's just one of those series that you love so much, you have to have it and read it over and over again. Thank you Lauren for writing an amazing book and giving me the chance to read it! :)

Firstly, I must admit the author is a friend of mine, but that's not going to cloud my judgement. This is my favourite of the series so far, Lauren has again left me hanging.
Love the way Rosa is maturing as the series progresses. How each relationship has more twists and turns.
Heartbreaking storylines, that had me yearning for a happy outcome which wasn't always forthcoming. But interspersed with Rosa's dry, maybe even black humour.
This book answered many questions left unanswered from The Wall, but has left many more unanswered for the fourth (and last?) installment.

The Wounded, third in The Woodlands series, is a beautiful book. There were so many surprises in this one and moments that tugged at my heartstrings. A few times I was worried about which way Taylor was going to take the story, but I was never disappointed. The author paints a vivid image of this post-war world. It's gritty and real, but full of heart, too. I find myself anticipating the next book in the series.

This series is amazing and Lauren Taylor is one of my new favorite author. These books should be a movie. What a emotional rollercoaster. I couldn't put the book down. What Rosa and her new family goes through is so emotional and Rosa is so strong being so young. The ending shock me and I just hope Rosa finds her way back to her family. I don't went to say to much and give away spoilers. I had a book hangover and I seriously can't wait for the last book.

I swear, I really need to start double checking that all the books in a series have been released before I start them because I hate waiting for the next book. This book ended on a cliff hanger just like the others and now I have to wait! I have really enjoyed this series so far and have loved Joseph's character. He is my favorite so far. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this interesting series.

Wow, what a great story this is. It tugs and grabs at your emotions all the way through. The third installment in this series does not disappoint. My heart was in my throat much of the way and at one point I was going "WHAT??!! You can't!!!"

The worst part about this book is we have to wait until October to read the final installment.

I just created a new shelf called "All time fav dystopians" and this was the first to go in it.

What an ending! Lauren Nicolle Taylor is a master of plot twists and a puller of heart strings. The third installment of the Woodlands series doesn't hold back. Now that the characters finally belong with one another, and finally begin to feel like a family, it's time to shake things up again. And no one is safe in this ruthless dystopian society. Another winner in a memorable series.

What can I say about this book? The Wounded grabs you by the heart from the very beginning and NEVER lets go. I thought I would never get finished because it seemed that everything kept me from reading, which is all I wanted to do! The roller coaster continues! I feel honored to read and review The Wounded. Thank you Lauren Nicolle Taylor for yet another heart stopping ride.

Loved it! Couldn't put it down. Such a page turner and very unexpected twists and turns. Rosa and Joseph are on such an emotional roller coaster. Everything about them just kept me guessing. Same with The Survivors so many surprises going on there. Can't wait to read what happens next. Bring on book 4.
