Collects Incredible Hulk (1999) #88-91. Bruce Banner has finally found a semblance of peace. Here, in the isolated interior of Alaska, he hopes to protect the rest of humanity from the Hulk’s never-ending rampage by secluding himself in self-imposed exile. Banner is confident that his plan will work — after all, who would be foolish enough to actually come looking for the Hulk? But when Nick Fury comes calling, you know there’s trouble for someone involved.
This is a short graphic novel that leads into Planet Hulk. It's meaty though. The art is beautiful. I read this on my iPad, and it was so bright and vividly rendered in the Kindle format. Hulk is hiding out as Banner in the Alaskan wilderness, keeping a low profile. Of course, he can't stay hidden that easily from Fury and SHIELD, especially when he intervenes at a woman about to be gang-raped. Hulk was not playing around with those rapists.
Sometimes I feel like Hulk/Banner. I just want to be left alone, but that's very difficult in modern life. Nick Fury taps Hulk for a mission and there's a sinister motive attacked, which is where the Planet Hulk lead-in comes in.
This was available with the Amazon Prime free books program. Definitely worth checking out.
The first story is from J. Michael Straczynski and Mike McKone's run on Fantastic Four. The Hulk has a gamma bomb blow up in his face and goes on a rampage. The Thing and Human Torch head to the desert to stop him. The Hulk is reliving all his life experiences and doesn't even realize where he's at while beating the snot out of The Thing. The only thing that really ties into Planet Hulk is a line at the end from the Thing where he made a joke to Reed about how the only real way to protect the world from the Hulk would be to launch him into space.
The second story is from The Hulk and leads directly into Planet Hulk. Nick Fury finds Bruce Banner in Alaska and talks him into going into space to destroy a Hydra weapon that they've been trying to disable for years. The Hulk eventually destroys Godseye and when he gets picked up by a SHIELD spacecraft to return home, it ends with an incoming call from Reed Richards and the Hulk screaming "No!"
Some decent enough stories with good art but nothing essential you need to read before Planet Hulk.
Which I read first. This explains why the hulk was jettisoned into space in the first place. It involves a rogue space station, a virus that takeover same, and lying to Bruce Banner to get him to do their bidding. After the Hulk realizes he's been lied to, he wants to talk to Nick Fury, who decided to launch him into space.
Yeah the whole launching into space but was a bit flimsy, but the art work is great, and there are good Hulk Smash scenes. And after all do you read a Hulk mag for the deep metaphysical discussions or the smashing?
Exciting prelude to Planet Hulk. While I've yet to get to the main event; this seems a pretty essential volume that you'll be glad to have read going into the main storyline!
Enjoyable but not enough Hulk Smashing. I don't care if the Dr. Reed and Sue Whatzhername are having issues with child protective services. Aside from it being pure padding, that story line in the first half of the book was as predictable as it was insulting to the readership.
It’s been years since I’ve read much Hulk comics. I used to read them all the time as a kid up until about the time Grey Hulk was introduced. I fell away from comics around that time.
I own Planet Hulk and so when I saw this Prelude I knew I had to read it before I went on to Planet Hulk. I didn’t know what to expect though.
I never realized what a a$$ Fury was though. A love ’em then leave ’em kinda guy as long as he gets what he wants.
I really, really liked the artistry in this one. Especially when he was up in Alaska. It was almost like a painting in style. I enjoyed seeing Hulk with a beard too. 🙂
There are two stories here. The first is by Daniel Way and is about Bruce Banner, who is living in an isolated cabin in Alaska, being recruited by Nick Fury to go to space to disarm a satellite. I found it disappointing mostly because I enjoyed the first issue, of him in Alaska, much more than the rest of the arc.
The second story is by J. Michael Straczynski and is about the Thing and the Human Torch trying to stop the Hulk who is rampaging across Los Vegas. I liked this one. JMS was clearly told he had to write a story about the Hulk causing a rampage to set up the Illuminati and Planet Hulk, but rather than portraying the Hulk as an out of control monster, as some authors would have done, he wrote a sweet and heartfelt story about PTSD and feeling like you're a monster.
After watching Thor: Ragnarok a few weeks back I decided to look back at the stories that inspired the film. Overall, I liked the story, but felt that certain elements were a little rushed. I wished that we would have seen more of Banner's isolation in the beginning. I also wished we had a little more detail about the events leading to the Hulk's secret mission. Overall, the story is a good and quick read. Including my wishes for more detail and prolonged stories in a couple of areas, I would still recommend this to anyone interested in Hulk or in seeing inspirations for Thor: Ragnarok.
This story was enjoyable but lazily written with many pages lacking any dialog leaving much to the readers interpretation of the events. I understand that comics are an art driven medium however, a certain amount of exposition is necessary to keep the reader better informed on the writers intension. This was a 90 page book and it took 30 mins to read so I can't say it is a good value for purchase however, if you can read it for free then It's a plesent waste of time.
The Hulk is taking a low profile and not involved in the Civil War between Iron Man and Captain America. That tranquillity is interrupted by Nick Fury who needs The Hulk on a deep space mission with ulterior motives. Very simple story that complements the art. The real story begins.
As the title states this is my first time reading a hulk comic. I really enjoyed it. The story was well crafted. Banner wanting to be left alone, the government needing help. Loved the art work. I’ve seen the animated movie Planet Hulk and I wanted to see what happens that lead to those events. Good read.
Nota 6,5.
I actually liked this more than I thought I would. It was written well enough and I didn't mind the art. It made me sympathetic to the Hulk's character going into Planet Hulk so I guess it did its job. Overall, it wasn't spectacular but I did enjoy it, now on to the main event...
In the prequel to planet hulk, banner is living a quiet life in Alaska, far from too many humans when Nick fury comes knocking... a good mini series that leads up to the excellent planet hulk.
The Hulk reappears in gold stretch pants. The art was awesome. I've never seen so many well painted teeth in all my life. The story was pretty good, but it had some techno-plausibility problems.
I'd already read the World War Hulk series, so was interested to know how it had started. But I was disappointed with the weak script, and the art is just ok. It would likely have been better to just skip it.
Good collection building up to Planet Hulk, but the last image of Hulk might be the worst drawing I’ve ever seen. It’s a tight close up on his face that somehow ends up looking like he’s having a confusing, sad, and intense pooping session.
This book is not at all essential to the appreciation of "Planet Hulk". It's fine, especially if you want to see Hulk with a beard, but ultimately it's pretty forgettable.
I read planet hulk before this prelude. It brought the storyline together very well. I am a avowed comic geek and love reading the stories I have missed over the years.
Great lead up to Planet Hulk. Just needs some more smashing. The art style was good. If you like Hulk, you should read this to see what leads up to Planet Hulk
