An otherwise-cool collection of anecdotes, analogies, and inspiration that falls just short of secular and just out of focus.

While I wasn't expecting the (certainly not-copious) Biblical references, I did find myself wondering about how the authors would urge young people - especially those underserved - to follow through with the apparent messages. Though some things I did personally disagree with (such as the practicality of the Define-Learn-Do model, and sports being a good example of a "meritocracy"), the messages were there, often seeming to end with a sort of "So now that you know this, go out and do it!"

A counselor at a school in an upper-middle-class community where resources aren't spread thin would probably inspire and drive readers and listeners to be successful with Edge. In places where/for people with whom things like income, food, transportation, and so on (read also: Payne, Maslow, etc.) are spread thin or aren't readily accessible, the message from Edge is sort of lost.

Or maybe not; maybe even for those underserved, Edge can still inspire them to "reach for the sky!", but it cannot give them much of an edge in conquering obstacles inherent to the socially-underprivileged. Perhaps in (some) sports, as Woodward writes, "[...]no points are given because of your previous record, your family's background, or your ability to talk smack[,]" but these are among a plethora of issues that hinder millions of people nationwide. Because our nation is not, as is lauded in this book, a "meritocracy".

It's not without...well, merit, in any case. For example, this book may have inspired me as a teenager; I can think of a couple dozen students I've known that it would likely not have helped.

*NOTE: I didn't listen to the accompanying CDs, as I wasn't given them at the time. I still may, once I get my hands on them.

Very well written, interwoven with social networking (Twitter @'s on many pages!), & edited. I also was very favourably impressed by the artwork & photography!

I only can hope that one day Goodreads allows reviewers/readers to award 1/2 stars.

This is actually :

4 1/2

Note, note, note.

Definitely well worth the investment of monies & the amount of time spent to soak up the lessons within.

I loved this book. It was written intended for children and young adults, although everything in it is also great for us older children to apply into our lives as well.
