The Boy Who Belonged
Twenty-one-year-old Lane Moredock finally has a normal life. There's no need to beat around the bush. I chose The Boy Who Belonged because the subject matter of a huge age gap will always intrigue me. And, like I said, nobody should get their panties in a twist due to my reading out of order. Not once did I feel lost and not once did I feel like I had been missing out on anything in particular because I hadn't read the prequel The Good Boy. The authors included enough back story to give me a big enough picture and it worked just fine for me.
Now, I'm the first to admit that I like to read about men who don't shy away to show how vulnerable they are. But that's exactly my problem with this story. While the writing was very good, a true highlight actually, I just couldn't bring myself to really like let alone love Lane. He was so shy, extremely needy, insecure and weepy. I really tried. I mean I felt sorry for what happened to him and I wanted to empathize with him but I just ended up feeling annoyed. Also, Lane's inner monologue and the constant scrutinizing were so tedious. Derek was all right; on the one hand, I liked him but on the other hand, I thought he wasn't a terribly interesting character. It's hard to put the finger on it. I guess he simply lacked charisma that could have made him stand out from the vast pool of fictional characters. I found him actually somewhat boring and his little drama about was ridiculous.
Derek had become the mirror through which he saw himself, and not because, like Laura thought, Derek was controlling Lane. But because Lane didn't know how to view himself except through others.
The shy son.
The awkward roommate.
The young boyfriend.
The needy sub.
That's the crux of the matter. Lane depended way too much on Derek; he could hardly function on his own. I need my fictional (and real life) characters to be independent.
I must also admit that I will always struggle to understand the connection between a "damaged", teary and awkward man and the healing powers of BDSM.
With pain, Lane could pretend to lose control, when really he took on the responsibility of processing the hurt, of coping with it, leaching pleasure from it. He decided what to make of it. With the collar, he could have a respite from the demands of the outside world, a space to retreat, if that was what he wanted. With the sounds, he was at the mercy of his own closeness with Derek. He had to let Derek see him.
While we're on it, there was too much sex. I just prefer more story and less sex because, quite frankly, I tend to feel bored after a while. Or, maybe I should rephrase my statement. I don't mind plenty of sex provided it's bloody great. Anyway, aside from the terrific writing, I really loved Mr. Z, the macaw with the filthy mouth and, of course, I was very fond of sassy Brin. He's a hoot.
"Where would we go if we were Mr. Zimmerman?"
"A strip club," Brin said immediately. "He loves syphilitic whores."
"Brin, seriously!" Lane snapped.
Don't get me wrong. Despite my issues, I still enjoyed this book, esp. Lisa's and J.A.'s writing and it did provide some great laughs thanks to the cheeky pecker, Mr. Z, and the flamboyant Brin. It goes without saying that I'll be reading the prequel The Good Boy eventually.

Best sounding scene ever.

Intense. Hot. Emotional. With much needed comic relief provided by Brin and Mr. Zimmerman. I say much needed because the humor would come just when I was feeling overwhelmed by emotion.
I'm struggling to find the words to explain how strongly this story affected me, so I'll just say I hope you give it a chance and that you love it as much as I did.
Side notes:
There is a scene with that I thought was incredibly well done. One of my comments on an update:
I like the vulnerability and trust that are inherent in that situation. And Lane is so sweet in his reactions... *nods* It all worked for me :)
This story might not work without reading The Good Boy first. It builds off that story, a continuation of Lane's healing and personal growth as well as his and Derek's relationship.

Since the first page of the first book I have just wanted to wrap Lane in my arms and stroke his hair and tell him everything will be all right. The story picks up a few months after The Good Boy. While Lane is still healing, things are going well with Derek and he is back in school, but he is still struggling with his sense of self worth. Out of the blue, Laura requests a meeting with Lane. While Lane rationally knows where he stands with his parents, and accepts that they will never give him the love and support he wants, he cannot help but hope. When he is face to face with mommy dearest however, Laura can bring him down with just one undermining comment. When she requests Lane's help with her appeal, however, he just can't refuse.
This installment doesn't have the darkness of the first, but it does explore the unpleasant relationship Lane has with his mother. Lane is stronger and more at ease with who he is, but he still struggles. Derek and his friends are there to support him, but while Derek is good for him, he is not perfect. Derek wonders about the true nature of their relationship and worries that he will not be able to be there for Lane as much as Lane needs him. Laura is manipulative and cold and does nothing unless it will benefit her. She has no problem tearing Lane down for her own benefit and it was difficult to watch Lane trying to please her.
I enjoyed this installment just as much as the first and did not want it to end. Lane and Derek are exploring more intense BDSM play and their scenes were hot. Ferg and Brin are back and Brin has turned into Lane's biggest fan. I love the relationship between the two of them. And of course, the story wouldn't be complete without Mr. Z, who is enjoying an extended stay with Lane and Derek. I am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that we will get more of these books, in the meantime I highly recommend them.

Go, Lane!
Nice addition to the story of Lane and Derek. Love how Derek continues to draw him out of his shell. Really liked how both men faced their issues head on--Lane kicked ass and Derek finally figured it all out. What a wonderful place to find them both.
Entertaining read besides the drama and scorching hot play Derek and Lane are up to, there's the antics of Andy and Mister Zimmerman as well as Brin! Brin kinda takes backseat to Andy and Z, who are just funny. Great sense of humor weaves through the story to keep heavy issues from dragging one down.
This isn't a wild monkey sex, swinging from the chandelier kinda book. Sure, there's some kinky play: pup, breath and sounding; but Henry and Rock quietly rip the emotions out of the scenes while this is all happening. It's that sort of intense.
Or maybe I no longer pay attention to all the window dressing, because at the end of it all--it's about emotion, trust and love. So, I really liked the dynamics between Derek and Lane.

Shit was getting a little too domestic if they were going to try carrying on a conversation about pet-sitting while they were fucking.

Lane, you break my heart.
I love the slow progression of his healing and I cannot tell you all how much I despise his mother in this story. Derek is feeling on some unsteady ground here as well so I admit to being on tenderhooks about the future of their relationship. I loved how things worked out and how they started communicating better especially with regards to their D/s boundaries.
Brin is perfection.

5 ★★★★★ and 5 ♥♥♥♥♥ from me for this, the sequel to 'The Good Boy'. Loved it.
I have to say first of all that I still want to hug Lane until he stops shivering. That cold-hearted, calculating and selfish bitch of a mother of his doesn't deserve a son like him, nope, not at all, and thank God for Derek...he at least is very free with his hugs and affection and that is exactly what Lane needs to help him heal and grow in self-belief and confidence. My son can always come to me for a hug, and I hope that never changes!!
Highlights of the book for me were Lane's personal growth in his relationship with Derek....yes, he's still needy on occasion, but he understands that Derek is there for him, that Derek makes him feel safe, protected and most importantly of all loved and wanted, which is something he never got from either of his parents...until of course they wanted him to perjure himself by saying that they were really good people and didn't mean to 'con' their customers and spend all that money ★eyes roll in head★. That Lane felt safe and secure enough in his relationship with Derek to tell his mother that in a choice between her and Derek, he would undoubtedly choose Derek was outstanding!! Let's see, what other highlights....well, of course how can I leave Brin out of this?? He's still the aging brat he was in the first book but you just have to laugh at him, his relationship with Ferg and his friendship with Laney are solid, and his take on the Christmas song 'Silver Bells' was one of the funniest things I've ever read....how Lisa and JA came up with it I have no idea, but it was brilliant!! And of course, my favourite macaw of all time, the fabulous Mr Z made more showstopping appearances, and yes, I will be repeating some of his more wholesome utterances later in this review.
As far as Derek and Lane are concerned, they are trying new things all the time, puppy play still features but breath play and sounding also appear...breath play I can sort of understand, it obviously heightens the pleasure and intensifies the feelings, making you fly, sounding however...well, each to his own, but it is something which Lane feels he needs. In this one, Derek also asks Lane to top because he feels that it's something that will actually a) help Lane with his confidence levels and b) convince him that Derek does love, want and respect him.
Right, let's have some quotes.....'Derek looked around the kitchen. The breakfast table was piled high with Lane's textbooks, and the bench was covered in last night's takeaway containers, but it was hardly a pigsty. And Christy, who had an actual pigsty at her house, which doubled as an overflow for the animal shelter she ran, was in no position to judge'.
'Mr Zimmerman was a macaw and was legendary throughout Christy's neighbourhood for the stream of foul-mouthed abuse that he could dish out on unsuspecting visitors. Like the mailman. Or the Girl Scouts. Or once, the FBI'.
'But Lane had been hungry for affection for so long that he still couldn't quite believe he could ask for it now, and it would be granted. Half of him wanted to soak up as much of Derek's attention and kindness as he could, just in case one day he didn't have it any more. The other half wanted to refuse that attention. Just in case one day he didn't have it anymore. It would be less painful to let go of if he didn't let himself get used to it'.
'Mr Z screeched and flapped his wings impatiently. "Nurse! Nurse!"
"I am not your nurse," Lane told him, holding out the banana again. "Or Dolores or Rodgers or a hooker."
"Fucktard," said Mr Zimmerman, reaching out to hold the banana in his claws. "Huh," said Lane. "Well, maybe".
And we're taking care of Mr Zimmerman said Lane. "Yikes" said Brin, "I still haven't forgiven him for what he said about the state of my venereal health. It's not syphilis, it's a birthmark, and anyway---"
"Lane, your mother is not nice. She ruins lives. She ruined your life. What good could possibly come from visiting her?".
Derek stepped over, took the bird from Lane, and put him back in his cage. Shut the door firmly. "You can just stay in there awhile, Mister, and sleep it off."
"I hope he's okay," Lane said.
"He should have thought of that before he ate half a bag of nuts."
"Aw, have a heart, Der," Brin said, coming over. "I can't think when there are nuts in front of me either."

3.5 stars ...Enjoyed the next installment of Derek & Lanes relationship. Poor Lane is still on the end of his lunatic mother and somehow allows her to manipulate his thoughts. Derek however remains steadfast and loyal to Lane and refuses to allow Lane to fall into depression and self doubt. While this has a steady BDSM edge the focus is really more on the emotional side rather than the actual physical. Lane is vulnerable and Derek supports this beautifully, especially with lots of love and care from their friends Brin & Ferg. There must be a book 3 eventually because this story is definitely not over. Hopefully Lanes stupid parents get exactly what they deserve !

Without Brin and Mr Zimmerman, this would be a very serious little book. I am not sure if the authors intended to go down such a thoughtful and dark painful path, but I guess knowing Lisa's other work, it isn't a surprise.
Lane is contemplating really important issues. And with his mother's interference, he is once again doubting the lifestyle he shares with Derek. Derek too, is standing on a precipice. Is Lane too young? Too needy? Will he ever feel financially stable? And how the hell did he end up with a foul-mouthed macaw for three weeks?
That last question is important because it is Mr Z that keeps us all from falling into an intense heap of ALL THE FEELS. I would be holding my breath with the sheer impossibility of the situation Lane would find himself in with his parents, and then Mr Z would let me breath (& laugh) again.
So gosh, this is very funny. Brin is an adorable brat. Over-the-top, outrageous, slightly acerbic. They got him just right. Andy is another incarnation of Lane, and the two of them together make sense. I love that Derek took on Andy as well.
Derek needs about five medals, all made of gold, so he could melt them down and relax a little about money. This aspect of Derek, the grown-up responsible side clashes with his artistic romantic side. It's a glorious portrayal of human frailty. I love that he shows us his worry about failing Lane.
I loved it. I loved its intensity, its downright kinkiness, its honest depiction of a lifestyle not all of us can understand, and its non judgemental tone (except that we are all totally judging Lane's parents, as we should).
Bonus, it's a Christmas story (#18 for me).

So gosh, this is very funny. Brin is an adorable brat. Over-the-top, outrageous, slightly acerbic. They got him just right. Andy is another incarnation of Lane, and the two of them together make sense. I love that Derek took on Andy as well.
Derek needs about five medals, all made of gold, so he could melt them down and relax a little about money. This aspect of Derek, the grown-up responsible side clashes with his artistic romantic side. It's a glorious portrayal of human frailty. I love that he shows us his worry about failing Lane.
I loved it. I loved its intensity, its downright kinkiness, its honest depiction of a lifestyle not all of us can understand, and its non judgemental tone (except that we are all totally judging Lane's parents, as we should).
Bonus, it's a Christmas story (#18 for me).

Laney and Derek are back, six months later, still working through Lane’s issues and trying to heal and be a couple. In this segment, Lane is continually struggling with his insecurities and coming to grips with what he needs and wants from Derek. Sometimes, those two battle each other in his mind. He still has trouble understanding that his feelings and needs for the D/S part of their lifestyle are ok and not just his replaying of the scenario with Acton.
On the other side, Derek is trying to anticipate what Lane needs as opposed to what he is asking for, i.e. the pain he is asking for isn’t necessarily what he really needs all the time. I love how Derek finds new ways to give Laney what he asks for. But, Derek isn’t perfect, and he begins to question their relationship when he realizes Lane will never be the guy who will ever really stand up to him. He is also questioning their age difference and what they each are to the other.
So, these guys are working stuff out, but unfortunately, Lane’s sorry excuse for a mother comes back into the picture to mentally screw with him all over again. No good could ever come from anything involving her. It was really good to see these guys communicate more successfully, which Lane does in leaps and bounds compared to when we saw him in the last book, and to see him take more control over his life, especially where his mother is concerned.
Brin and Ferg are back as well, as crazy as ever. Brin is still as big and shiny as ever, and it was great to see them again. A shout out also has to go to Mr. Zimmerman, who Lane and Derek are watching while Derek’s sister is away with her boyfriend. He is just as mouthy as ever, and it was great to see/hear him again.
This is a very good solid story that pulls you in. It makes you feel and really want to see Lane thrive, for himself and with his relationship with Derek. Lane doesn’t seem like he is ever going to be strong enough that he won’t take steps backwards when his insecurities are challenged, but he definitely does some growing which is nice to see. I really enjoyed this and look forward to seeing where these guys are headed next.

Loved it! This one is no abuse more angst, but I enjoyed being inside Lane and Derek's lives again. The sex scenes are all hot as fuck, and that sounding scene was mind-blowing.

Loved it! Angsty goodness. Loved that they added a little more intense BDSM play into there relationship. Even though this is my 2nd time reading about sounding that shit scares the hell out of me and I don't even have a penis.

OK onward I love that Derek and Lane aren't perfect and yet they work and try for one another. Its just beautiful. My indulgence of Lane and Derek was an uninterrupted immersion in their world. I was flying high with the first book and ran to the sequel as quickly as my fingers could take me. Side note…..there happens to be a small treat in between that’s worth checking out. As we begin this sequel, we find ourselves six months into their relationship. Things are going well. Derek is working. Lane is juggling school, work and volunteering at the shelter. He is doing remarkably well. Their bubble is filled with healing, recovery, and a lot of love. Their chosen family accepts them. But then…their bubble breaks. The outside world returns in a blink and it’s not the same. Suddenly they are faced with judgement and expectations and…it’s too much. They were forging their bond but it’s still fragile. As much as they believe in each other and what they have, it’s too soon to undergo scrutiny. How can they survive the storm of reality if they haven’t confirmed what they are behind closed doors? When push comes to shove, will they split? Or hold tight?
What's to like: I was grateful things picked up quickly but also allowed enough time to pass for them to grow. I think it’s important for you to get Lane and to do that, you need his history. Reading the first book is necessary in my opinion. I was certain that given the right opportunity, Lane would thrive. And he has. He’s going to school, working on his vet tech program while he manages his Taco Hub job and helping at the shelter when he can. His relationship with Derek has become stronger and he’s more confident with himself and his desires. But then his mother turns up and everything is distorted. She leads him to believe there is something wrong with him and his…need for submission. That he is being taken advantage of. That she only wants to protect him. And now everything is tainted. He’s confused. It doesn’t help that Derek is going through his own internal battles. What if he misconstrued his place in Lane’s life? What if he’s not the partner he thought he was? What if, what if, what if? I’m glad that everything wasn’t perfect but it was real. I’m so glad Brin and Ferg are still hanging around. And the animals provide welcomed smiles and chuckles, especially Mr. Z.
What's to love: I not only loved the characters but I loved their passion, their connection…them. I found myself very much vested in their happiness. I needed to know what happened. AND I needed them to be okay. I loved how Andy mimicked Lane and his progress with people. If all else fails, look to the dog, he’ll tell you what going on. I loved the holiday season and the traditions that they are starting. I won’t lie and tell you I loved how Lane’s mother attempts to return to the picture because I didn’t. I despised her as much as Derek did. She makes my blood boil. I hate what she tries to do and the doubt and distrust that she brings. But I can’t say I’m upset with the consequence of her actions.

In her endeavor to sway and sever the only effect was to pound them closer together. As it turns out, they melt under pressure and fuse tighter. Gorgeous.

This book was a well-written mixture of the domestic and the sexy, BDSM and simple comfort, family and friends, good moments and bad. In this story, Derek is struggling a bit to figure out what Lane really needs from him, while fighting the feeling that he is replacing Lane's parents in a Daddy-kink kind of way that he doesn't find appealing. Lane is finding his own feet, with work and in his relationship, and trying to separate out the abuse he suffered from Acton with the BDSM that he craves from Derek. He is much stronger, but the fallout from his parents' wrongdoing is still taking its toll. His mother gets in touch, and he is vulnerable to her, hungry for her love and attention, but she still wants what is best for her, not for him. But it's so hard for him to let go of the past.
I liked the fact that this is not a smooth omnipotent-Dom kind of BDSM story. Lane is hard for Derek to read at times, and they both make mistakes. They even question their relationship and what they really mean to one another, while the reader can feel the underlying love between them clearly. The sex/scenes are well done, not just hot but written to move the story and the relationship forward.
It's good to see Lane coming into his own. The side characters (and not least the dog and bird) add welcome humor and leavening to the story. They also give the two guys someone to talk things through with, and to ease the intensity of their relationship. It was that balance that I thought was the best feature of this story, and although BDSM is not really my thing, I could appreciate the way the guys worked with it, trying to give each other what they needed. Things are still a bit one-sided between the guys, but in this story I could see Lane becoming more of a partner to Derek. I began to believe in their happy ever after.

I really enjoyed catching up with Derek and Lane and finding out how their relationship has developed since The Good Boy. Lane has moved in with Derek and they appear to have settled into a routine and together with Andy (the dog) they have their own little family. Both men are learning what makes the other tick and there is much more kink in this book, which is always a good thing. Brin and Mr Zimmerman ensure there are plenty of giggles and light relief and as usual Ferg is a steady influence in everyone's lives. I was glad that Lane finally found the confidence to stand up to his mom and put her straight about his relationship with Derek.

It was great to be back with Derek and Lane again! I loved the story, but not quite as much as The Good Boy. They explored more kink in this book, some of which isn't really my thing... breath play, waxing, sounding. Yeah, I had to skim through the sounding scene. It was very well written, but I’m way too squeamish for that. I guess I'm more of a vanilla-BDSM girl :)
Overall a very good read, I especially loved spending Christmas with Lane, Derek, Ferg, Brin, and Mr. Zimmerman.

We're so accustomed to Christmas stories that are sweet. Light. Fluffy.
Fiction rarely seems to acknowledge how, for many people, the holidays hurt. Never is happiness more elusive than when everyone is telling you you should be--yet you aren't.
Lisa Henry and JA Rock not only acknowledge the phenomenon, but used the holiday and all the subtle manipulations of socially-expected merriment as the backdrop for this--dare I say it?--heartwarming continuation of Lane and Derek's story.
It's hot, it's brave, it's lovely. And yes, it *is* heartwarming. But to warm a heart, you have to admit it's been cold.

A delicious second helping of Lane and Derek that was incredibly loving and sweet, but spicy enough to push me out of my comfort zone as a reader (unsurprisingly from these two talented authors).

3.5 stars, rounded up
The Good Boy ended on a high note, so I was curious to see where the authors would take Lane and Derek next. While stopping at book 1 would be fine, book 2 is certainly a good follow-up.
I think there's a lot more of Derek in 'The Boy Who Belonged'. In this book, readers get a better understanding of what makes him tick, and the pressures that he deals with. Some of that does have to do with Lane, but it's clear that Derek wouldn't trade their relationship for anything.
Lane and Derek's relationship is tested throughout the book, and they come out stronger for it. It was a tough process, but both were determined to make it work. Every time they overcame a hurdle, I went all mushy inside.
Plus, they usually topped it off with some hot kinky sex, and I'm not going to turn my nose up at that!
However, one thing that bogged the book down at parts were the repetitive inner monologues. I could have done with a lot less of the moping from both MCs, particularly since it was the same issues/thoughts each time.
Also, I really wanted Lane to tell his parents to go to hell. He owed them nothing, and they certainly deserved whatever they got. Objectively, I could understand why Lane felt unable to walk away so easily, but I would have rooted for him if he had!
Bonus points for the holiday feels and the pets - Andy the cowardly dog, and Mr. Zimmerman the asshole macaw. Plus, Brin and Ferg are awesomely hilarious.
Overall, I really liked this addition to Lane and Derek's story. They don't necessarily need it, but I wouldn't say no to a third book!

There were so many times that I just wanted to HUG Lane. I absolutely loved him. And I really loved the way that Derek could totally read into Lane and know exactly what Lane needed even when Lane didn't know himself.
Ferg and Brin were great as well. At first, I didn't really know what to make of Brin, but he really wormed his way into my heart, especially with how he was with Lane (or Laney since I'm writing about Brin). He might have the subtlety of a hand grenade in his delivery, but he had a good heart. And let me tell you, he really did love a good dessert taco (or whatever they were) from the Taco Hub.
I absolutely loved both books. I have The Good Boy 4 stars earlier today, but I'm going back and changing it to 5. It's warranted based on Mr. Zimmerman alone :)!!

I just don't see how Lane is ever going to be able to function. Maybe it's just me but it's very frustrating to see the constant struggle without being able to see any kind of resolution. The writing was obviously very good since it's driving me nuts!

Already the title had me hooked. I remember well the Lane of The Good Boy, completely abandoned and betrayed by his crook parents. Left with such deep feelings of inadequacy and vulnerability. Really, the damage they had inflicted on him had begun long before they had been caught for their Ponzi scheming. Long before they implicated him in their crimes.
It’s six months later but Lane has a big hole to climb out of. He reminds himself that he’s worthwhile, worth loving, Derek proves it to him everyday. But the doubts and self-loathing remain.
While this isn’t quite as pulling as the first book -- it’s mostly more of the same between Derek and Lane -- it still has the good bones of a deeper character sketch. There’s more of Lane fitting into his skin, coming to terms with who he is and finding value in himself. And it’s interesting to see Derek still wrestling with his feelings of ‘residual revenge’ at having been swindled by Lane’s parents, and balancing that with Lane’s need for domination and punishment. And then worrying whether he’s a substitute parent on top of it all.
It might seem that he walks a thin line, but it’s clear that Derek has grown to love Lane deeply. The main tensions in the story are whether Lane, sometimes so lost in self-doubt, can ever become an equal partner to Derek. Also, Lane’s mother, Laura, makes an appearance as she tries to control Lane’s life from prison.
I like reading the progression and seeing how Derek and Lane make it work with a special kind of loving (and there are all sorts of hot tricks in Derek’s sex bag: wax/breath/puppy play, sounding, spanking, anything’s game. At times reading such intimacy really feels like an intrusion). It’s fitting that this culminates in the Christmas season, a time that is full of upheaval -- good and bad. Derek, with Erin, Christy, Ferg, and Brin have made a family for Lane where he finally feels that he can belong.
Oh, and Mr. Z is even more funny and evil that ever before.

I wish I could rate this book higher because I did enjoy it. However, the first 55% was a little too slow for me...
I absolutely adore Derek and his and Lane's relationship with Ferg and Brin. And let's not forget Mr Zimmerman that provides huge amounts of humour.
But a big problem I had was with Lane. He's such a sweet character and I loved him in the previous book. I still do now, but I just got so frustrated with his lack of confidence. I know that's just his personality, his parents complete lack of care and support and he has been through so much. Acton had a hugely negative impact on Lane, which I don't think he will ever fully recover from.
But after six months with Derek, of constant support, love, affection and reassurance; he is still just too insecure and naïve. It started to get on my nerves. Derek got mad at himself for getting so frustrated with Lane at times but I understood why. Sometimes Derek would have a really shitty day and just wanted to come home to a partner who he could vent to, someone to have a good row with, someone who could take it and fight back. Someone who wouldn't crumble under his own needs. But he would often come home to a mess. Lane would have had a hard day and just crumble. He would fall apart when Derek was in a bad mood and could get a little snippy. God, it was so frustrating.
I just wish he could have taken everything he was given and use it to become stronger.
I wanted him to open his eyes and see - as heart-breaking as it is - that his parents were never going to change. That yes, they love him, but only for their own selfish gains. They will always try to mould him into someone he is not. Someone who makes them look good. Someone they wish they could be proud of instead of ashamed of, when he has never done a single thing to actually deserve their displeasure.
I just wanted to see him be the strong person I knew he might eventually come to be.
He did finally stand up to his mother towards the end of the book, but it didn't feel like enough. I wish we could have seen them in maybe five years or something, maybe then he would have grown more.

What did I think? I think I'm happy that I'm not writing a formal review for this book because my thoughts are all scattered and my emotions still engaged with Lane. Lane, aka Landon Moredock, son of two well-known Ponzi-scheme smooth operators currently serving time in prison.
They abandoned him emotionally right from birth, but essentially threw him to the wolves when their scheme was uncovered (see The Good Boy) and now that his life is starting to settle down and he's in a D/s relationship with Derek, a professional photographer, 17 years older than Lane and a victim of the Ponzi-scheme.
Lane's mother initiates contact with him in hopes of getting his help in trying to change the family's image with the public. The entire process is extremely painful for this quiet, unassuming young man who does not want to displease his mother, even though it's obvious that he will never meet her "standards". It's very painful to watch the emotional toll this contact takes on Lane, but its very rewarding to watch his growth and reaffirmation of his strength and his love for Derek.
There's so much humor interspersed throughout the story as well, primarily coming in the form of Mr. Zimmerman, a feisty macaw with potty-mouth. Derek has agreed to keep the parrot for three weeks, over the Christmas holidays, while his sister and her boyfriend vacation in the Fiji Islands.
Brin and Ferg are back and Brin lends his flamboyant character to the hoiday festivities, but he also provides true friendship to Lane when he most needs it.
There was nothing about this story that I didn't like. And most of all, I'd like to wrap Lane up in a big hug and become his pseudo-mom because that boy needs all the love he can get. Fortunately, Derek and his family and their friends provide it.

The entire process is extremely painful for this quiet, unassuming young man who does not want to displease his mother, even though it's obvious that he will never meet her "standards". It's very painful to watch the emotional toll this contact takes on Lane, but its very rewarding to watch his growth and reaffirmation of his strength and his love for Derek.
There's so much humor interspersed throughout the story as well, primarily coming in the form of Mr. Zimmerman, a feisty macaw with potty-mouth. Derek has agreed to keep the parrot for three weeks, over the Christmas holidays, while his sister and her boyfriend vacation in the Fiji Islands.
Brin and Ferg are back and Brin lends his flamboyant character to the hoiday festivities, but he also provides true friendship to Lane when he most needs it.
There was nothing about this story that I didn't like. And most of all, I'd like to wrap Lane up in a big hug and become his pseudo-mom because that boy needs all the love he can get. Fortunately, Derek and his family and their friends provide it.
Great series! I wouldn't mind more of these guys.

I read The Good Boy and my heart broke for Lane. When the Boy Who Belonged came out, I knew it would be one of my auto reads. It just didn't happen right away.
Lane's life is better than when we left him in Good Boy. He has his friends, he has his lover and Dom,Derek, and he is back in school. But Lane is still fragile and filled with self doubt. His parents sins still shadow him and just when I am hoping they are out of his life, his mother asks to see him. It is heart wrenching because what child doesn't want his parents love and approval. Even when he logically sees he is being used, he can't say no. He has Derek but that self doubt keeps Lane from turning to him and when Derek directs his stress at Lane one night, it is almost more than their relationship can handle.
This book could have been emotionally draining, but Lisa Henry and JA Rock know how to keep the pace just right. Thank goodness for Derek's sister's foul mouthed Macaw, Mr. Zimmerman. He lightens things and I love the way Lane interact with him. There is also Brin. His over the top personality doesn't hide his love for Lane and he is an awesome best friend. Ferg definitely has his hands full. :-)

I really enjoyed this sequel to The Good Boy by JA Rock and Lisa Henry. It was great to see Lane growing. I know his growth may seem minimal to some but you can see where he starts the book and where he ends it, the strides that he makes in becoming stronger. Also I loved seeing Derek's struggles with the age difference and the role he has in Lane's life. There is a lot of internal analysis on both sides and ultimately growth.
This book also has the ***Hottest Sounding Scene*** While I was reading this scene I felt like I was Lane and going through it. The portrayal of the intensity of the experience is done so well. On a regular day the idea of sounding makes me squeamish as all hell. But reading this scene changed that (at least until I hopped to Tumblr to checkout sounding gifs, lol!).
I will like to read more about Lane's growth. So hopefully these guys are planning another installment.

I always hope that the second book in a series is better than the first. This one is.
Derek and Lane are backing trying to make their relationship stable, in spite of all the outside influences. The major one being Lane's calculating mother who insists that lane visit her in prison. As always, Lane hopes that this time she will actually be the mother he has yearned for all these years.
Besides being sweet, gentle, and loving, this one is loaded with humor. I loved every wonderful word, that lead to every wonderful sentence. Brin and Ferg are back, more prominent, with Christy, and Mr. Zimmerman more background this time. Andy is still there and still Lane's twin in emotional development.
This book left me wanting more, please more. I give it a first Christmas full of stars.

Mr. Zimmerman learns to mimic Lane and make Andy the dog go crazy; and Brin, awesomely, wears a yellow tank top that says pterodactyls are pterrifying.
