Demon hunter Remington 'Remi' Hart likes to think she’s seen a thing or two. That’s what happens when you live in a town like Dove Creek, where the supernatural world abounds and the townsfolk are willfully ignorant of it. But when the Triple Six show up -- flesh and blood human beings with powerful, superhuman abilities -- Remi and the rest of her allies, the Amasai, are thrown for a loop. Old and new enemies alike come at them head on, forcing the Amasai to recognize that they are outnumbered and outgunned. Before Dove Creek is overrun, they have to find a way to solve the mystery of the new dark power and quell its source.

During all of this, Remi is still coming to grips with the death of her husband three years ago, dealing with her barely understood feelings for the werewolf who saved her life, and flirting with the smoking hot cowboy of the Amasai who is currently pursuing her. Remi will set her personal feelings aside, though, when the bodies start piling up and her own family is threatened. What started out as a quest for vengeance soon becomes a fight for survival.

I am always thrilled to find an amazing debut novel by an indie author that is compelling, exciting, and perfectly paced. Once Broken offers all of this and more! The kind of urban fantasy fairy tale I crave, the book blends romance with adventure and suspense, then wraps it up into an enchanting (albeit gritty) world of vampires, vampire hunters, werewolves, and other intriguing supernatural creatures. I'm so excited about this book! And even more excited to find a new author with such talent and potential! It makes me want to shout from the rooftop so that when the author becomes the next big thing I can say, "See! I knew it!" It also makes me wish I could rate a book higher than five stars! I am not exaggerating.

Remington "Remi" Hart is not like other young women. A great tragedy has left her emotionally broken and guarded, but also tough and capable… skills she will need to tap into as a hunter with the Amasai. Remi explains, "Killing vampires and protecting the average citizenry through a sort of secret police force for the supernatural world was never supposed to be a family business." And yet, here she is, suited up with wooden stakes in her boots, and various other hidden weaponry, gearing up for a war.

But why Dove Creek? On the surface, it looks like any other small town. Instead, a supernatural crossroads settled in near the town--no one knows exactly how long ago--leaving a blurred veil through which demons eventually figured out a way to enter into the Mortal Plane. Remi's father, John McCoy, was one of the first Amasai. But that was a long time ago. Remi and her allies are now facing new challenges as the veil continues to thin… and the stakes are getting higher than ever.

Alongside Remi is the head of the Amasai, Hugo--tough, fearless, and loyal. Remi's partner, Gabriel, has plenty of surprises up his sleeve, while Alex, Jocelyn, Casey, and others have their own reasons for fighting, and their own secrets.

There was so much going on in this book with all the different creatures and realms, but I never felt lost! I was intrigued with the characters' backstories, and fascinated by the reveals along the way. And the build up to romance allowed for a natural, realistic progression that resulted in some amazing, and ultra steamy, love scenes! This is one of my new favorite books! If you love paranormal romance, this is a must read!

Remi Jean Hart lives in Dove Creek, a town where legends come to life. A town where a supernatural crossroads settled itself, many years ago. A group of people formed a militia to protect themselves, and the blissfully ignorant residents. The residents go about normally with their lives, as Remi and a group of people named the Amasai protect and avenge.

When unnaturally powered people seemingly come out of nowhere, Remi and the rest of Amasai wonder, who are they, and what do they want from us? What they didn't know, was that their line of work has just become more dangerous than ever before, and all hell is about to break loose.

As Remi goes to battle with demons, vampires, and supernatural beings, she struggles with the anniversary of her husband's death, (by supernatural forces), two romantic interests, and the decision to finally tell her brother the truth about their family, and the town's supernatural secret. As she faces down the enemy, she has to choose between heroism and revenge...

For starters, I really liked Remi as a protagonist. She was a kick-butt heroine who didn't take anyone's crap! :) All of the characters are very like-able, but I wanted to mention Remi specifically, since the story is centered around her. I like a strong female lead in a story, and Remi Hart definitely fits the bill!

I was happy that this story had a strong family theme. I expect to see Remi and her brother Dylan to grow closer in the next book in the series. I look forward to that.

Without revealing too much, the Author made a wise decision with how she ended the story. --I will leave it at that.

I think Once Broken can appeal to a wide audience. There is a little bit of everything supernatural featured, horror, romance, action and even a bit of erotica! Speaking of action, this story was paced well and will leave you hanging at the edge of your seat! I remained eager to turn the page throughout! LOTS of action packed battle scenes!

Judging by Once Broken, The Dove Creek Chronicles promises to be an excellent series! I look forward to book 2 in the series! H. Anne Henry has a new fan!

2.5 **spoilerish**

A dud, this one never really went off for me. It has plenty of good reviews, so maybe it's just me. But I couldn't connect with any of the characters (and there were so darned many of them, most of whom played little role), didn't find myself invested in the outcome of the mystery, and floated unconcerned through the fight and sex scenes. (The fight scenes resolve themselves effortlessly, especially the last one, and the sex scenes are so cluttered with detail I never noticed the main event.) Nothing made much of an impression on me except for a few annoyances.

First off, the book is written in the first person. I loathe first person narratives. Now, this would have just been a matter of personal preference if I left this comment at 'I dislike the style the author chose.' But the primary problem here is that the main character doesn't have enough of a personality to pull off the first person POV.

She's emotionally distant, has no notable quirks, isn't funny, or sarcastic, or unusually acerbic, etc. There is nothing to make her narrative pop. As a result, it all just comes across as exceedingly flat. And when we're talking demon battles, sex with hotties, sleazy vampires, slimy witches, and broody werewolves the one word I should not be able to use is flat. But it really, really is.

On top of that, no one has any emotional depth. Seriously, at one point a character see's his father kill himself while possessed by a demon (having just learned that all the paranormals exist) and he doesn't even say, "oh," let alone OMG, Holly Shit, butt fucker, shut the hell up and get outta damn town—no freakout for him. It's literally just a perfectly calm, "thanks for saving my bacon."

Now, to be fair, I think the author tried to give the characters some je ne sais quoi when she chose to make them all so obviously Texan. And I don't usually mind if a character has a regional accent. It does give a book character. However, and this is a big however, it can't be too overdone or it just becomes a distractions. Here, in this book, almost everyone has a Texan accent. I couldn't stop tripping over the apostrophies, baby girls, darlin's, lil' ladies, etc. The whole book was chocked full of passages like this:
Don’tchya dare move, girly.” The gruff voice of the farmer came from behind me. “I done called the sheriff. Saw ye parkin’ in m’ bar ditch . . . Sick ‘n’ damn tired of you kids makin’ mischief ‘round here.

Granted, not all of it is quite that uninterpretable (What's a bar ditch, anyhow?), but it's still too much. Far, far, far too much. If everyone's to have the speech pattern, just tell me they do, write normally and let me imagine it.

This was only exacerbated by the fact that a couple characters seemed incapable of using normal contractions (one was very old and one an immigrant, so maybe this was purposeful). They felt very stiff and names were used at the beginning of dialogue too often to feel natural.

All of that was then cluttered further with a myriad of unnecessary details. Every outfit (down to the colour of nail polish sometimes), every shot in a game of pool, meals, what was passed when driving down the road (again), etc was listed ad infinitum. It was endless.

Last there was the romance. Remi literally went from mourning her husband one moment to kissing a man in the next, only to then take up with another man a few pages later. I don't mind bed hopping, but it all went from 0-60 in seconds.

Does anyone else talk to their kindle? I literally looked at my little rectangular BFF and said, "Where did that come from?" Out of nowhere, that's where and it ended just as fast, with just as little warning. No time and nothing to make me care one-way or the other about the relationship, which made the fact that for a little while the book just degenerated into a series of sex scenes all that much more annoying.

Now, the book isn't meritless. The idea is an interesting one. There is a little spiritualism at the end that I image some readers will really connect with. It was fairly well edited and the mechanical aspect of the writing is pretty good. I just think the whole thing needed to be a little more fleshed out so that it didn't read like a laundry list.

I’m a huge fan of the Midnight Texas series and this reminded me of that series. It even takes place in Texas.

Dove Creek, yes, sounds like it should be a quiet, peaceful place to live ... not so much. It’s a beehive of activity for things that are not of this world. A group of people call the Amasai protect the town and surrounding area and all those living there from demons, vampires and any other monster that happens to come along.

Remington Hart, a kickass chick, is a member of the Amasai and this is her story. The leader is Hugo de la Cruz and along with his wife, Meredith ... Casey, Gabriel, twins, Garret and Aric, Jocelyn, Detective Solomon Powell and werewolves, Alex, Gio and Meg the group has their fingers on the pulse of the community and they protect their town.

Remi’s mission in life is to kill the ancient vampire, Valan, that took her husband’s life on a hot summer night as she watched. She’s been hunting Valan for three years and continues every day to hope to avenge her husband’s death.

I enjoyed this book immensely and am looking forward to reading the next story of the Amasai and Remi.

Once Broken, the first book of the Remington Hart series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). An interesting take on supernaturals, but a bit of a disappointment in execution. I enjoyed the pacing and the plot, but the characters never seemed to get enough depth to hold my interest. 3.5 stars rounded up as I liked Remi's personality.

Some books have great characters. Some books have solid writing. Some books have a compelling story. Other books have all three. Once Broken is the story of Remi, a young woman who hunts vampires and demons for a living. Well, okay. She has a paying job at a pawn shop, but really, she only works there to pay the rent and provide cover.

In reality, she fights with the Amasai, a group that fights to keep the demons at bay and humans safe. She joined them after her husband was killed by Valen, an ancient vampire. On that day, she was rescued by a werewolf, Alex and instructed in the ways of the Amasai.

There was very little not to enjoy with this book. It’s very well written. The characters are wonderfully complex, imperfect, and strong. Though the book is written from Remi’s perspective, it’s very much an ensemble cast.

One of the best parts of this book was how the author explained away all of the various paranormal beings. Vampires are demons who have inhabited a dead human body. Werewolves are technically dead. They spend Pergatory as a werewolf and when they’ve done enough good as a werewolf, they are admitted to Heaven (or banished to Hell if they ever kill a human). Though these definitions of vampires and werewolves aren’t the “standard textbook” definitions, they really work because of how well the author sells them.

There’s a small bit of romance between Remi and one of her cohorts. This is the only part of the book that I felt was lacking. I wanted a little more development of the relationship. It felt as if the romance storyline was sexy and delicious and then all of a sudden it fizzled out and was forgotten.

However, as long as you’re not expecting a heavy romance from this book, that’s a very minor issue.

Some books work hard at describing scenes, people, and emotions. With Once Broken, those descriptions feel effortless. You won’t have any problem picturing every setting, every bit of action, every emotion, but you won’t even realize you’re reading description.

I was excited to read this book since it has vamps and wolves in it. The opening was a punch in the gut since I didn't expect it to have a prologue that Dominic (husband) will be killed (let's make that ex husband). I was wondering on how things would turn out since Dominic died and Remi (female protagonist) will be alone. Turns out the author has a plan for her (phew~). I was disturbed when she somehow checks on the attacker, which is a vampire, when she is supposed to fight for her life -more. The wolves are the somewhat good guys in here. Another twists, I see.

I didn't feel a strong connection with Remi. I find her character sad and uneventful. I rely on some characters when they engage an animated discussion with her because that seems the only time when Remi would have some emotion in her. Most of her emotions are well kept and heavily masked. I understand her predicament, I am just finding lighter and free spirited woman. The author provided her with a friends-with-no-benefits kind of relationship which turns out to be complicated. And it’s just frustrating that the characters didn't have closure. Just a little glance then her attention was directed on some matters at hand. I guess this will be continued on book 2 and I am hoping to see that. I just love Casey. :D

I can't quite place the setting of the story, it seems blurry to me. Probably I'm expecting more. It took me a while to understand the side characters and Remi's activities. I can't comprehend with the turn of events, it made me confused. The heated and anticipated events were dump towards the end of the story. I don't know what’s the deal with all those powers; I imagined them as similar to the Avengers.

I am still trying to digest the story and contemplate on what the heck just happened. It did not live up to my expectation quite well. I am looking forward on reading the book two though.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dove Creek is a little town where the paranormal is the norm. The residents persevered when demons tried to take them out in the past. The Amasai were formed to protect the citizens of the small town. With a new threat in town, they strive to survive again.

This is a great new take on vampires and werewolves and things that go bump in the night. I love that this is a new premise to these supernatural creatures. Vampires are really demons inhabiting dead bodies. Werewolves are really dead people in purgatory.

Remi is grieving for her dead husband, killed by a vampire. The author did a great job of bringing Remi’s feeling to the surface. Remi was very altruistic. She would do everything she could to keep others from going through what she went through when her husband was killed. I loved all the members of the Amasai. I felt a bit of tension between Remi and 3 male characters. She had a fling with Casey, turned out he wanted more even though they agreed to just take it day by day. Then there’s Alex, a werewolf that Remi has hero worship for. He saved her when her husband was killed, and she thought she felt something for him. Finally you have Gabriel, Remi’s partner. It was never expressed, but I thought he may have had a little thing for Remi and was just biding his time.

I did find this to be more of a paranormal read than paranormal romance. There was some romance, but not a lot. Mostly it was just adventure, action, and paranormal. Overall, this was a great story that was easy to read and fast paced.

The Amasai are protectors of the innocent against supernatural powers such as demons and vampires. Werewolves are afterlife creatures that must follow one rule no killing humans. Remington "Remi" Hart lost the love of her life Dominic to vampire attack three years ago ever since she's been working with Amasai. Remi's father John McCoy also Amasai fighter is living in Alaska since separating from her mother. Detective Solomon Powell knows about Amasai is investigating suspicion deaths of single males. The mystical crossroads is gaining in activity lately. A group called Triple Six is believed to be blamed for these deaths. Fellow Amasai Casey is showing interest in Remi that doesn't involve fighting. Can Amasai stop Triple Six? Is Remi interest in Casey too? Your answers await you in Once Broken.

Once Broken is different sort of paranormal book. Vampires and Demons are the source of evil. Werewolves are creatures of afterlife that fight along side Amasai. Remi isn't sure how to let go of the past. She's still grieving for her husband and afraid to let go of her heart again. I thought the story was well written. Characters unique and driven. I would definitely consider reading more of this author's work.

I really enjoyed this. I don't think the sex scenes were necessary and they will turn off potential readers, like my husband. It wasn't a romance novel, so several graphic sex scenes in quick succession were just bizarre and distracted from the main narrative.

But the storyline otherwise was really good. I enjoyed this origin for supernatural creatures, it's one I hadn't heard before.

A 3.5 read. Interesting take on vampires, werewolves etc. I quite liked the fact that it was fairly dark - no sparkly vampires here. However the plot seemed a little choppy and the three (!) romantic sub plots for Remi seemed a bit much, especially since one was quite unnecessary in my opinion. All in all I would likely check out the sequel.

Good story, with a good lead character - Remi. It's always nice to read books with strong female characters. I am happy that there was not any cliff hangers. This book has vampires and werewovles which is cool.

The story has a good premise but I felt there was too much emphasis on the romance and not enough of the back story. felt the story overall missed out on a lot of detail and basically being fleshed out. I was confused about who all the characters were as there are a lot of them.

This book was good, but it didn't move me enough to find the other books. I was okay with stopping and not knowing what happened. It was a fluff piece for me, just something I've read.
