Savannah Morrison is the new athletic trainer for the Moncton Ice Cats, a professional hockey team in the wilds of New Brunswick. It’s a good thing she’s got plenty of knowledge and grit, because as the only female trainer in the league, she has to work twice as hard to win the players’ respect. The last thing on earth she would do is date one of them.Twelve year hockey veteran Garrick LeBlanc isn’t ready to hang up his skates, particularly since he hasn’t figured out what the hell he’s planning to do next. He needs the new trainer to keep him fit to play, and she’s got the skills to do it. Too bad he lost his mind and hit on her the day they met. Now she hates his guts and he’s made an art of ignoring her. When the team is put up for sale, Garrick and Savannah have to work together to save their jobs and their team. Somewhere along the way, they discover Garrick isn’t just a hockey player, Savannah isn’t only passionate about her work, and maybe they’ve got more in common than they thought.Fair Play, the 1st book in the Hat Trick series, is a enemies-to-lovers romance featuring a hometown hero, a kick-ass woman who can weaponize duct tape, and the Moncton Ice Cats—a hockey team that looks out for their own. All of Sam’s romances take place in the same world, but Fair Play can be read as a standalone. It is an 80,000 word f/m romance with no cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA. Fair Play contains brief m/m content, but don't worry, there's plenty more in Book 2.
Samantha Wayland has three great loves in life; her family, writing books, and hockey. She is often found apologizing to the first for how much time and attention is taken up by the latter two, but they forgive her because they are awesome and she clearly doesn’t deserve them.
Sam lives with her family -- of both the two and four-legged variety -- outside of Boston. She is a wicked passionate New Englander (born and raised) who has been known to wax rhapsodic about the Maine Coast, the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont, and the sensible way in which her local brethren don’t see a need for directional signals (blinkahs!).
Her favorite things include mango martinis, tiny Chihuahuas with big attitude problems, and the Oxford comma.
It takes a lot for me to read M/F. A lot. And because I've come to really like Samantha Wayland's hockey universe (that includes a myriad of books not advertised to be linked together) and all of its characters, I was definitely curious about this despite the presence of a female MC.
Have no fear. Garrick is one fine specimen of a man. No complaints here. Though Savannah had some commonly seen bouts of female insecurity and resistance, she overall was a strong character who held her own.
Bonus points because I got to see Alexei, Mike, and Rupert. Note that though this story was published before Crashing the Net, its timeline seems to fall between it and Home and Away.
One more thing. Wayland writes great smex - some seriously eyebrow raising smex. I say that because I've never seen this sort of dynamic despite the many, many M/F romances that I've read. Most likely it's because she also writes M/M and those elements make their appearance. So maybe that will pique your interest - unless you're a traditionalist - because traditional this ain't.
So, I'm hooked. I'll be finishing the next two books despite the menage aspect (or maybe because of it). M/M is next and then M/M/F.
Garrick and Savannah sooo very hot 🔥 together!! Savannah was a spitfire and took no shit from the hockey team 🤗, I’m looking forward to the next book. This series will eventually be a trio relationship MFM and I can’t wait!
Ok, so, most importantly, the sex here is fan-fucking-tastic. We get some MF butt play, which I don’t see nearly enough of and it was just excellent. Best part of the book, by a lot.
The first half to two thirds of this book was a solid four stars for plot and characters, five stars for sex and chemistry. Good misunderstandings, workplace conflict between the couple, etc.
The plot deteriorates as we head to the end, though. It just goes off the rails. There’s money laundering, and kidnapping, and death threats, and and and. So much happens, and it’s a wildly different angst/stress level than the rest of the book. It was honestly kind of hard to get through.
CW: workplace sexual harassment and assault, rape attempts (by villain)

Love the cover and the title. LOVE a sports romance.
I didn't really like this one. I'm disappointed.
I read it feeling very disconnected. I'm not sure why, but had to make myself read it. I kept thinking it would grab me, but it didn't. I'm a bit intrigued by #2 and #3, but I won't read either unless they are highly rec'd by one of my trusted GR friends. You may really like this one, It just didn't click for me.
♡ Gifted by Esti ♡ Hockey romance ♡ Forbidden romance ♡ Sweet hero ♡ Hero is a hockey player, heroine is the team's physical therapist ♡ Bi hero
OMG this cinnamon roll hero is one of my very favorites! This book reminded me a lot of The Forbidden Man because this romance is between an athlete and his team’s physical therapist, so the forbidden element was very similar. If you liked that book, you’ll likely enjoy this one!
This is the first in a polyamorous hockey romance series which resolves to an m/m/f triad, with the seeds planted in this book; I'm definitely hooked and want to read the other books. It was riveting, I really liked the heroine's arc around her job, and the MCs have truly explosive chemistry; amazing UST and when they finally get to it, the sex scenes are extremely hot and definitely lay the groundwork for a triad later with a ton of erotic compersion, which was lovely to see in a romance about a couple. That said, I found the detailed accounts of sexual assault to be a bit gratuitous, and I am hoping that the later books in the series do not continue that trend. (Though looking at reviews for book two, I am not certain they will.)
So this was less hockey, more sexual assault and fighting local mafia goons than I was expecting.
Starting out it seemed the main conflict would be the team getting sold, with a side conflict of threatening asshole. But with stalking SUVs and alley muggings, getting gagged and bound at gunpoint... it's a different story than I was expecting.
+ male bi representation + women enjoying anal
- sleazy sexual harassment villain is one-note - seriously, why does MF always have sexual assault? - "she doesn't know she beautiful" trope - insta-horny syndrome
I wanted to start at the beginning of the series before diving into her later mm novels, but this is making me have doubts. Hopefully the gays get a better deal.
3.75 rounded up to 4 bc of the very unexpected twists and kinks which were 🤌🏼🤌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 heheh also I really liked the characters! Nice personalities! Altho the “excitement” / plot could use some more work, it felt a bit rushed towards the end - but I’m very excited to read book 2!
The actual content of this series doesn't match the way it is advertised and that's the biggest issue here. The writing was fine, but the plot lost itself over and over again. Are we in a forbidden romance between trainer/player or are we stuck in the middle of a small-town mafia-esque crime drama? I don't know and it doesn't appear like the author does either.
A book about the Moncton Ice Cats, a professional hockey team in the wilds of New Brunswick.
Savannah (28) is the new athletic trainer. Garrick (34) is a veteran hockey player of 12-years. Aging issues like arthritis, is why he'll be retiring soon.
𝗢𝗧𝗧 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 is caused by hockey player Bobby, and his mobster father.
Bobby stalks and harasses Savannah.
Robert Kramer plans to buy the team after it goes for sale. He resorts to violence and kidnapping to stop Garrick from interfering. Garrick, with Savannah, Jack, and law enforcement, ultimately thwart Kramer’s plans and save the day.
Reese, the team owner, agrees to sell to Garrick and Savannah's brothers, with Reese remaining as a fourth partner. Garrick is offered the team manager position, but plans to move to Boston after the season.
Rupert, Reese's business manager, agrees to manage the team.
★ The Positives: The MCs are likable, hardworking, and caring. Garrick protects Savannah and saves the team. Savannah is devoted to the players, especially Garrick, and is very enthusiastic during sex.
Rhian, Garrick's teammate and friend, is a good guy. In book 2, he'll be filling in for Savannah while she and Garrick are apart. There are many 🔥 m/m sex scenes.
★★ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝟮-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀: This sports romance has 𝘼 𝙇𝙊𝙏 of focus on the sports. It's obvious the author knows and loves hockey. Not being a sports fan, I prefer it to be minimal.
🤢 Plus, there are 𝘼 𝙇𝙊𝙏 of porny sex scenes.

The Premise Savannah Morrison is the new athletic trainer for the Moncton Ice Cats, a professional hockey team in the wilds of New Brunswick. She’s doing everything to establish herself in a male-dominated field, and has to deal with being the only straight female under sixty, so she gets hit on working for the Ice Cats. Alot. Matter of fact, the first person to hit on her is Garrick LeBlanc, a twelve year veteran of the EHL. He isn’t ready to retire but he is depending on Savannah to keep him going until he figures out what he wants to do when he’s done playing hockey. Their relationship starts off on the wrong foot, but when the team is put up for sale, Garrick and Savannah have to work together to save their jobs and their team. Somewhere along the way, they discover Garrick isn't just a hockey player, Savannah isn't only passionate about her work, and just maybe they've got more in common than they thought.
My Thoughts Picked this up as a freebie on amazon - and I was completely surprised at the writing. It’s good. Freebies are a crap shoot (and I've gotten alot of clunkers), but I’m glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised with Ms. Wayland’s romantic suspense set in a little Canadian hockey town. The plot surrounding the romance is well developed and there’s enough action that takes place that keeps your attention and kept me flipping to the next page to see what will happen next. There is fair amount of really hot, kinky sex (though it is all M/F), but as a reader, I got to know Savannah and Garrick, and there weren’t big moments where their characters didn’t make sense or did things to falsely create some conflict. Savannah has legitimate reasons for being careful in launching a relationship with Garrick. Garrick is an open, easygoing hero who is willing to let Savannah make her moves, his alpha side really coming out in the bedroom, but not overwhelming the rest of the characters. Basically, he’s a very likeable character.
The suspense part of the story has its flaws - Garrick turned investigator wasn’t the strongest and the resolution wrapped up a long time criminal conspiracy pretty easily, but I was willing to suspend disbelief enough to go with it.
This story is the first part of a three book series, but this book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger and there is a resolution to the romance that gives the reader a Happy For Now feeling.
I would warn those who would want to continue that the story shifts from M/F to M/M and eventally MMF and if that’s not your thing, you could end the series on this book and be satisfied IMO, which I really appreciated....though I'm totally going to read the rest of the series, so well done Ms. Wayland - you pulled me in.
The Bottom Line A surprisingly well developed and well written hockey romantic suspense book. Check it out.
Two and a half, actually. The writer should have the word "cream" banned from her vocabulary. Like, seriously? You say pussy and cream, I am thinking of yeast infections. Ew. Other than that, and the cardboard-cut bad guys, it's a solid romance IF YOU IGNORE THE SHEER STUPIDITY OF
Savannah is the trainer for the Moncton Ice Cats. She maintains a chilly front so the players don't hit on her. When she learns the team is up for sale, she lets Garrick LeBlanc know and they start to plan how the current owner can keep the team. Because of this they grow closer but, unfortunately, a buyer has stepped forward. Can they keep this buyer from the team? What will happen if this buyer gets the team?
There is a lot going on in this book. First, the romance. Second, the team and its sale. Third, problems for Savannah with a certain player. Lots of action and adventure as this story goes on as Savannah and Garrick have to find out the truth about the person who wants to buy the team. Savannah sure is a wiz with tape. It saves her many a day. I liked these characters, especially the good guys. I like how Savannah is oblivious to the support she has and discovers it has been there all along. I was glad the bad guys got theirs. Could not have happened to better couple. They deserve each other.
I am looking forward to the other books in this series.
Granted this was the first MF romance I've read in a very long while, so maybe it was more "It's not you, it's me", but I really wasn't feeling this. I rather just wanted the background to the Poly throuple that is Savannah/Garrick/Rhian that we meet in Home & Away, but I didn't really like Savannah all that much in this one.
There didn't seem to be much depth to either Garrick or Savannah, the romance seemed to happen in an instant, and too much time was taken up with the other plotline. Savannah started out as a shy, retiring, blushing lover, and then immediately turns into a sex kitten. And Garrick had no flaws? He was just utterly perfect in every way?
I can see how this is one of the earlier books written by Samantha Wayland, as it doesn't seem to have the same kind of depth as her more recent ones.
Ice hockey, fit blokes, strong woman battling against the patriarchy to be taken seriously at her job, 2 m/c's thrown together in the face of adversity, hot sex, nasty bad guys, love ensues. I enjoyed it, it was fun, but it's not going in my special pile. Bonus points awarded for our heroine NOT have her man sort out all her problems. Double bonus points for her skills with gaffer tape.
The plot was a bit OTT (though not nearly so much as some other books in the genre) but the characters were warm and fun and the prose committed sincerely to what it was going for, and I'm cheerfully reading the rest of the series as well, tbh. (Also, the millionaire dude and his bff are also together, amirite?)
honestly can't tell you much about this because I read it and forgot about it, but I can remember enjoying it while I read it. A low-angst sexy times romance with hockey players and a strong female.
My kingdom for a 7 star rating system!! (This was a solid 2.5 that I’m rounding up, because rounding down would also be disingenuous. Read if you, like me, grew up on soap operas. Skip if you require your plot to be plausible 😂)
I don't even know why I keep reading that... It's just so ridiculous, it kinda amuses me and I need to see what happens next. Not sure I'll read the rest of that series but off to book two.
i have been bing reading samantha wayland her collection incl the ones i already read and had a wonderful time! so i finally got to reading this series
