袁世凯和汪精卫估计同属一招错满盘输的乱世枭雄，而三权分立缘何在政治转型期的中国无法落地生根，袁世凯选择开倒车恢复帝制，而蒋亦选择军事独裁，北洋军阀之乱，起于一种不能破未能立的政治转型，黎段府院之争，段的内阁多数是反对派构成无政党支撑，而黎又多是“民元约法”下虚君而又希冀秉实权的职责权利边界模糊不清..北洋政府时期一北一南一国两院割据..弥补了对北洋政府时期那段历史

From Yuan Shih-k'ai to the Feng system in charge, not more than sixteen years of history gathered into this book, I learned two things: First, you can not use the modern point of view on historical figures; but in the "historical transition period", the period is estimated to be two hundred years long, Yuan is in the early stage, at this time in the middle, I do not know whether we will be lucky to see the completion of the transition date.

中國由帝制向民治轉型的階段，唐德剛稱之爲“歷史的三峽”，需時至少二百年方有可能完成。而民國初年正是這一轉型的開始階段，各色人物接連登臺，混亂動盪實爲這一轉型之必然情形。中國何時真正完成向民治的徹底轉型，纔算是走出了這歷史的三峽，進入新的發展階段。而這一過程之中，停滯甚至逆流必然存在，袁孫蔣毛等人皆爲這一轉型期中的人物，所謂“形勢比人強”，但個人之選擇在歷史之中往往也有着重大影響。當時人難以看得完全，後人從高處俯瞰三峽中的人物，方能有更全面的對形勢與人的認識。

从辛亥革命到袁世凯离世，短短几年时间，民国政坛可谓是风云变幻，虽不乏雄才大略之人才，却无法实现共和之理想，可见制度转型之艰辛，不过唐老的历史三峡论倒是非常乐观的。虽然唐对孙不吝溢美之词，也可以看出国父绝非完美无缺；袁氏称帝，留下千古骂名，但当年就任临时大总统也确是众望所归。唐老博古通今，结合大量史料和独到见解，严肃之余也不乏诙谐，还是颇具可读性的。

唐德刚在此书中指出袁世凯比较强硬地拒绝全盘接受日本的“二十一条”，从而否定了中国大陆教科书的传统观点。唐德刚借题发挥时认为中国未来颇有希望，2040年过历史三峡进入民治，军队国家化，现在（2020年）看来还遥遥无期。严格地说，此书是一部说书，看得确实热闹，但终究不能与严肃著作相提并论。

這本書對我有很大意義。
它是我跳脫「國民黨史觀」的第一本，當初看的時候非常震撼，幾乎是整個把老袁的印象給翻了一遍。我反覆地看了三四次以上。
再來就是作者的《晚清七十年》，同樣也是把我的史觀顛覆了的作品。
