Why are Sawaki’s books not available in English!!?? More people need to encounter the beauty of his travel stories which influenced and inspired so many of us.
A journey starts the moment we decide to start planning for it. In this non-fiction book called "The Power of a Journey", the author decides to travel through Korea to England with little money, and only using a bus as means of transportation. It's sad to see that this has such a low rating, but then, I also struggled to read this last year. However, this year, when I decided to challenge myself to read it, just once more, I realized that it was impossible to not stop flipping the pages. This book had many inspiring quotes about traveling. Here is one of his quotes that inspired me the most and made me contemplate and consider what traveling is truly is in its raw and real form. "I think the same is true of travelogues, where the important thing is not the action but the reaction. No matter how unusual a trip is, a travelogue that relies on its rarity is not very interesting." When I was little, I never realized how lucky I was to be able to travel to many countries. This is why, even though I was able to experience many things abroad, since I wasn't aware about the culture and history of that country, I didn't really feel any strong emotion. This year, I am going to Kyoto and Osaka, two of the prefectures that I've always yearned to go. I was always interested in the rich culture and interesting historical background they hold so I hope to remember the valuable lessons this book taught me while going on my trip. Thus, I hope to do "reaction"towards the trips instead of simply focusing on the "action" of seeing historical places. In addition, this book made me want to go to even more trips. The author mentions that the best age to go is 26. If you're earlier or later than that age, he assumes you wouldn't get the same experience and teachings from traveling. While I think that 26 is an oddly specific age and while I don't completely agree to this statement, I do think that it's important to travel from an early age. If you hesitate and miss the opportunity, your journey simply wouldn't be as inspirational and valuable as it would have been compared to if you had gone when you were younger, still aloof and obsolete from knowledge.
The author considered the motivation of the history of his journey, and described it with memories of his writing and researching, which I wasn't interested, though. It seems that I bought a wrong (I didn't intended to buy) book.
