“Time ....” Poseidon shook his head. “You mortals! You’re bound to it and keep forgetting it is only an illusion.” (Page 305)

“Man was made of flesh and bone on purpose! Time is his prison but also his best friend. He cannot make sense of his feelings, his accomplishments or his losses without it.” (Page 327)

If you’re in the mood for adventure, fantasy, mystery and Greek myths, I recommend author Effrosyni Moschoudi’s novel The Necklace of Goddess Athena: A New Adult Supernatural Mystery, which has elements of all these genres blended in. The result is a page-turning book with characters and situations which can stir the interest and imagination of readers of all ages who love Greek myth retellings or placed at the threshold of two very different worlds.

Time travelling siblings Phevos and Daphne are sent by their father, Efimios on a mysterious journey which takes them from ancient times to modern-day Athens and the only rule they have to obey is to follow the signs Athena will send them. After they land in an orchard, Phevos and Daphne meet its owners, other two siblings, Ksenia and Manos, who will befriend them, due to the coincidental loss of their parents in the same period as Efimios’ wife. Do Phevos, Daphne, Ksenia and Manos have to unknowingly go on the same path to seek the truth about their parents? What secrets will surface from the past and how will they affect the children’s lives? Only by reading the book you will find out.

This is a coming of age story especially for Phevos, who has to learn to understand and to interpret the signs the two gods send him through dreams, riddles or other kinds of signs which we would consider being pure coincidences, but Phevos was taught not to believe in coincidences. The gods always know when it’s the perfect time to show the way, in order to make the divine plans come true. Until all the signs are revealed one at a time, Phevos and Daphne have to adapt to modern life in Athens, to find a job, and they will even fall in love with other characters from this peculiar world. However, sooner or later, the two worlds will meet and memories from the past will help both characters and readers understand how they shaped the present and how they will influence the future.
The main themes of this novel are faith (if Phevos didn’t have faith that the gods will guide him through, he would have definitely missed the signs), love in many of its forms (motherly love, brotherly love, platonic love, etc.), loss and longing (which are the main reason some of the characters suffer, whether it’s about missing their parents, their spouse or a child) However, the book has also many moments of humour. I love the way Phevos is struggling at first to speak and understand Modern Greek, not to mention the fact that he doesn’t understand the meaning of words like tourist, shower or hotel. And there are also gorgeous gems of philosophy sprinkled here and there, which work perfectly as inspirational quotes for the reader.
I know that some people are not fond of poetic writing, but I enjoyed it very much because it felt like a melody to my ears. Besides the interweaving of magical elements in the story, I also adored the depiction of Athens with its people and their everyday life, the vegetation and the cityscape, which seemed so accurate that it brought me back to places I visited in Greece two years ago. Though most of the characters don’t have many flaws, I grew fond of them, their good nature and their ability to adapt to harsh situations life threw their way. I know it sounds very odd, but I would have liked to meet some of them in person and to befriend them because I had a wonderful time learning about their lives and observing how they reacted in different situations.
The Necklace of Goddess Athena is an easy read for readers of all ages who still believe in fairy-tales, myths and the power of love that helps you find the truth about one’s disappearance and the way to bring them back in your life if that’s possible. Reality and fiction meet in fairy-tales and myths, and Mrs Moshoudi’s novel is no exception. Hop on this wondrous journey from Antiquity to present-day Athens, befriend most of the characters and be prepared to see Athena and Poseidon appear in front of your eyes and hear them speak in prophetic tones.

This interestingly done Urban fantasy features Athena and Poseidon seen through the eyes of a Greek author and is the tale of two ancient gods playing games with mortals. For me, this book is a young adult to new adult novel. It is sweetly written but has a few rough spots due to the translation—not the writer—which does not make it any way less worthy of reading. The main characters are deftly brought to life with personality and energy; and, the view of the mythological gods (which she makes come to life) is uniquely Greek. Ms. Moschoudi has a charming and level way of writing, which offers well done characterizations and beautiful descriptions of the people and places in and around Athens. The writer moves her story nicely along and leaves us with a satisfying ending. I look forward to her next book.

It is ancient Greece and Efimios, servant to Goddess Athena, rebels and flings her necklace, the sign of his bondage, into the sea. . .
So begins one of the most unusual novels I have ever read. It is Efimios’ son, Phevos, who continues the tale, when he suddenly finds himself and his sister, Daphne, transported to modern day Athens. He knows he has a mission to fulfil but the only clue he is given is to look for the signs.
In Athens he meets and is befriended by a brother and sister, Ksenia and Manos, whose parents mysteriously disappeared one night eleven years before – oddly at the same time that Phevos lost his own mother. Can there be a connection?

This story is fascinating on several fronts. It tells us something of the Greek gods, particularly Athena, and it tells us rather more about modern Greek life, family values and loyalty.
I found some of the narrative scenes quite lyrical. The description of the Plaka area, where Ksenia and Manos live, took me straight back to the cheerfulness and ebullience of Athens. I could almost see the colours and smell the aromas.
What is perhaps most surprising is that this author is not writing in her native tongue. This results in some charming Greek idioms creeping into the text, which enhances the feeling of being in another place.
There is mystery and excitement in this book, but perhaps its main message is about how the Greek people feel about their country and about each other.

I found it utterly charming. I think you will too.

The idea of Mythology has always been appealing to me, even as a child. Greek mythology, in particular, was something I loved reading. So picking up ‘The Necklace of Goddess Athena’ by Effrosyni Moschoudi was a no-brainer. I was prepared for a fantastic fantasy-filled adventure! What I was not prepared for was the way it transported me so effortlessly into the world the author created. This book is full of so many amazing things! Time-travel, adventure, Greek Gods, mystery, intrigue, loyalty, friendship, family, love and clan-destined missions. It is a wonderful, clean read for all ages.
Modern day brother and sister, Ksenia and Manos, are paired up with ancient time traveling brother and sister, Phevos and Daphne in a seemingly coincidental occurrence. They soon find themselves on a mission that will change reality as they know it as they uncover truths about their family while on a journey finding clues laid in wait by Athena. A path that eventually leads to the Gods themselves. The story is so expertly woven together that I find myself not wanting to tell you too much about it. I want you to experience it as I did – living in the world of the book until you reach the amazing finale! You won’t want to put it down until you are done and you will be left wishing it had never ended.
Past and present link together throughout this lively and entertaining story, leaving me believing the possibility that there is more to life and love than the visible layers we see with our eyes. On almost every page Effrosyni Moschoudi offers up gem after gem of wisdom that will touch your heart and affirm truth in your soul. I actually started writing them down as I read so I could post some of them in my house. Inspirational, but highly entertaining! Filled with danger, yet sparkling with the goodness of its characters. Sometimes the characters seemed a bit too perfect, but they needed to be that way in order to fulfill their destiny. Only one chosen by the Gods could follow the path they did! In parts of the book it is obvious that the book was not written in the authors’ native tongue, but this fact quickly becomes an endearing part of the character of the story itself. After reading this I am filled with the desire to visit the beautiful city of Athens! I am looking forward to another book from this author!

If there's one word I'd use for this book, it has to be sweet. Although it's set (for the most part) in today's Athens, there's a feeling of past innocence and charming quaintness that seduces the reader. This is a perfect book for the beach (in the summer), or those days when you simply want to kick your shoes, crawl to the nearest sofa with a warm cup of cocoa and read something that will put a smile back in your face (in the winter).

In fact, the only thing that may put off some readers is the lack of darkness in the characters. There is no seedy underbelly in Effrosyni's Athens, and definitely no meanness and cruelty in the hearts of her characters (the heart of gods, of course, is a different story). In other words, if Trainspotting is your cup of tea, this is not a book for you.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for a convincing urban fantasy with lovely, warm characters, a solid tale and excellent, sparkling writing that brings to life the story, just scroll up and click "add to basket". That simple.

If you like The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, you may also like The Necklace of Goddess Athena by Effrosyni Moschoudi.

Great book from a new author, who I only discovered recently. Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Necklace of Goddess Athena is such a book. From the first pages the story makes you feel captured by the mythical Greek legends and spirits of the old times. Effrosyni’s charming story will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come. The story teaches us that the people are born into this world with the freedom of choice and surely, given the right mindset, this divinely endowed gift can grant them the power to acquire anything that they desire. Phevos, Daphne and their father are time travelers and believers of Goddess Athena. Every one of them is unique in their own way and the story reveals how important are their decisions to follow or to not follow Athena’s command.
On the other side Manos and Ksenia are challenged to believe in the existence of the goddess Athena and her strength.
The fourth siblings strongly believed from their experience that there is no such thing as coincidence. They always found signs of guidance whenever they needed them, so they keep believe that the Gods respond to prayer by guiding people through signs. During their journey they are learning how to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following their dreams.
What I liked about this book was the great imagery Effrosyni uses throughout the novel. Also, I love that this book is taking you on a journey, not an adventure to slowly get the author's point across. You will feel yourself getting smarter and more adventurous as you read The Necklace of Goddess Athena.
What I disliked about this book was that it is slow at points and gets a little monotonous, but if you keep pushing, it will all be well it.
Anyway, the novel is filled with symbolism, spirituality and cleverly disguised valuable life lessons. The book was well written, and has a nice flow, almost as if it has poetic tones to it. It is loaded with nice descriptive and philosophical language that makes for a quick read. The ending is satisfying, although I would have truly liked to see what happened next.

I wish I had more good things to say about this book, but sadly I found myself disappointed.
First off, it's over 600 pages long, and the story moved so slowly that I lost interest every second page. I feel like the author could have told the story with 50% of the words used--overwriting was a big problem with this book. To me, it seemed like the author forced an emotional turmoil to try to help us connect with the characters, but it felt forced and contrived.
To me, it seemed like English was the author's second language. The construction of sentences and expressions were off--not incorrect, just abnormal, as if they were accustomed to thinking in another language and used that construction in their writing.
There was A LOT of purple prose, which I can't stand. For example: “Ksenia…” he whispered and then the velvet of his lips came to seal hers with a silent vow of love in a tender kiss that was the first one for both of them. -- Definitely not my favorite!
The book is written primarily in passive, there are a lot of run-on sentences, the grammar is a bit iffy, there's missing punctuation and punctuation in the wrong places, adverbs like "funnily enough" are all over the place, and there is a lot of word repetitions. The overuse of adjectives and adverbs takes me out of the story.
The POV doesn't really work. The book does a lot of head-hopping! It also tells what's going to happen, but not in a good way. Things like, "Little did X character know that his world was going to change forever". A bit too cliché, and poor writing in my opinion.
I found it odd that the author focused on details, like the dialect of Greek spoken by the characters. Some details are too niche-specific to be general entertainment. There are also a lot Greek expressions that aren't explained or translated, so they don't have meanings to the average reader
To finish it off, there was no real climax. I never felt a moment of panic, tension, or fear for the main characters.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It attracted me immediately being set in Athens, a city I know and love. Moreover it has a fascinating storyline which involves time travel from ancient Greece to the present day when Efimos sends his son Phevos and his adopted daughter Daphne on a quest to Athens.
I really enjoyed the modern day story too of their friendship with orphaned brother and sister, Ksenia and Manos.
As their father’s purpose is gradually revealed throughout the book, the author brings the two stories together.
The ending is superbly constructed and I only wish I had half the imagination of this talented new writer who manages to combine a good story, romance, time travel and classical history. My only regret is that there isn’t more of the story set in ancient Athens. The author gives us a tantalizing glimpse and then it’s back to the present day. Maybe this is something we can look forward to in the next book? Having said that, this story kept me riveted and although I really wanted to know how it ended; at the same time I didn’t want it to end- a remarkable achievement!

The Necklace of Goddess Athena by Effrosyni Moschoudi

Efimios an ancient Greek is under the influence of the Goddess Athena. Using time travel he has saved the city many times. He sends his son Phevos and his (adopted daughter) Daphne on a mission. They end up in modern day Athens and meet Ksenia and Manos(who are also brother and sister). The four of them work together on the mission and find themselves in the middle of two feuding Gods.

A very original story. I liked all four of the young characters. I loved how Effrosyni Moschoudi mixed mythology with time travel. The story was a page turner, filled with some twists, turns and secrets revealed. I truly lovedThe Necklace of Goddess Athena from the first page until the last!

A skillful blend of fascinating mythology, history, and modern reality!

I breathlessly followed this amazing story, page after page… It took me to magical places and reminded me of known facts while at the same time introduced me to new ones.

Being a native Athenian, I thoroughly enjoyed “seen” my hometown under a new light – a masterful intermingling of today’s modern city with its rich historical and mythological background.

I was glued to the pages by the author’s vivid descriptions and her beautiful, almost poetic way of writing. This book had it all: adventure, excitement, suspense, mystery, fantasy and of course, romance. I laughed, and I cried, as the story of Phevos, Ksenia, Daphne, and Manos unfolded before my eyes. The novel was also enriched by a cast of very interesting characters, especially their parents and Mrs. Sofia.

I enjoyed immensely this breath of fresh air in the time travel fantasy genre.

Highly recommended!

Time travel stories are always fascinating until they are bogged down by clumsy storytelling. Fortunately, The Necklace of Goddess Athena doesn’t suffer from that. It's well-plotted and carefully executed.

The book is quite descriptive, setting up scenes that effectively take the reader to the past and the present, alternating seamlessly with narrative flair. The story takes its cues from the Greek mythology, and spins it around until a uniquely morphed version emerges, with a distinctive voice and narrative style.

This mythology-fantasy story is excellently crafted, worth reading! Goddess Athena used to send Efimios on time-travelling missions to save Athens. When he became too elderly to save Athens, he sends his son Phevos and Daphne on a time-travelling quest. They get caught up in the conflict between two gods Athena and Poseidon. I was hooked from the 1st page and looking forward to reading more books from this author.

Readers who would like a taste of modern Greek life mixed with the inevitable Greek myths should try this epic. A rather complex tale of time travel and bespelled jewellery makes the most of the Acropolis as a backdrop. Be prepared for ordinary Greek names of most characters, which sound exotic to outsiders. Even the dog is called Odysseus.

I found somewhat too much looking backwards and backstory, with a new character introduced with a few pages of backstory and next a sudden jump to eleven years ago, all of which breaks the forward momentum of the plot. I know it's a book about time travel and love through the ages, and the current day parts are well managed once the travellers come out of their confusion.

You may like the young characters who puzzle out the circumstances of their meeting; but when a god appears, Athena or Poseidon, this character immediately steals the stage. I am sure it was ever thus!

This isn't a book for children but some young adults may enjoy it and I did not find objectionable scenes. We get a pleasantly detailed tour of the land and learn about Corfu as well as Athens.
I was sent an e-ARC by the author. This is an unbiased review.

Phevos, without fully realizing how and most importantly why, finds himself along with his younger sister in modern-day Athens—some 2,000 years ahead of their time. The only advice his father gave them before shipping them off to an unknown world was to “follow the signs”. With this single phrase as a guide and the friendship-turned-love of Xenia, a modern-day girl who is personally invested both in Phevos and his quest, the young couple embark on an exciting yet treacherous journey that will lead them to magical artifacts, feuding Gods and eventually to solving ancient puzzles that, unbeknownst to them, have shaped their very existence.

The Necklace of Goddess Athena is a fantastic novel—literaly and figuratively. I’m usually wary of time-traveling stories, but Effrosyni Moschoudi has managed to blend the ancient and modern world in such a seamless way, using the right locations, the right vernacular and character-development process, she manages to stay clear of jarring or conflicting situations. But what Ms Moschoudi’s writing truly exudes is “ethos”; ethos of the kind that has been common among humans throughout history, but which you rarely see being an integral part of a plot nowadays. Also nostalgia. I don’t know if it were the purity of the story’s locations (Plaka is a settlement built right over the residential area of ancient Athens) the inherent goodness of her characters or the heart-warming interactions, but this is a world I’d really like to experience again. That said, I wouldn't want to downplay the book's pure fantasy moments brimming with the wrath of ancient Gods, where Ms Moschoudi's writing is at its best. Needless to say, I already look forward to this wonderful new writer’s next novel.

What a great read! It is a good long story and is well worth the read. I was able to submerge myself into this Greek world in the past and present. I found it to be interesting and it kept my attention the whole way through. The Necklace of Goddess Athens takes you on a journey of love, mystery, mythology, danger and so much more. Author Effrosyni Moschoudi is an amazing writer. She created a unique story that flowed seamlessly. I was able to discover the mysteries along with the characters. There was not too much giving away too early in the book. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I feel that the charters falling in love was so heart touching. It was written in such a pure and meaningful way. Then, Oh My, I just loved the ending! What a perfect way to end such an amazing story. I don’t know if there is another book planned, but it seems to be complete and wrapped up nicely.

Efimios, the father of Phevos, traveled through time as a servant of Athena until he gets stuck in ancient Greece and missing what he left behind, but he has a plan. Now it is time to set it all into action. Phevos and his sister Daphne is thrown into a world they have never known. They were taken out of ancient Greece and dropped into our present world with a mission. Only they are not sure exactly what that mission is. All they know is to follow the signs. Them and their new found friends Ksenia and Manos set out to uncover the mysteries that surrounds both families with the only things to guide them being a necklace that belonged to the goddess Athena and signs from the gods.

Take a trip through time and into this world of the Greek Mythology!

I did not know what to expect when I started reading this book and time-travelling ancient Greeks was a surprise. It has the elements of a romance story, a mystery and adventure which propels the plot. The characters are likeable and well, the setting is sublime. For me it was a wonderful journey back to Athens, walking around the Plaka, seeing the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion.

There were a few captivating lines that embodied the story:
‘It is only the eyes that tell the truth at all times.’
‘…crystal drops sparkling in the sun like precious diamonds.’
‘From what he could see, she was holding a long spear that glowed with a blinding light. He could not look at it any more than he could face the sun on a summer’s day.’

I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and how the story unfolded. I particularly liked the malevolent aspect of Athena, a dark and unforgiving goddess. For all her virginal benevolence there lies the undertone of arrogance and expectation.

For readers who enjoy a light, charming story and experience the delights of Athens, I suggest you take the time to read this book.

With The Necklace of the Goddess Athena, Effrosyni Moschoudi has created a beautiful story of friendship, belief, and endurance. The Necklace of the Goddess Athena is an entertaining and fast read, making you want to read more. I was drawn into the story right away. I felt close to the characters and everything that happened. All relevant characters became so real that I ‘related’ to them. When I reached the end of the story, I was sad – having to say goodbye to my ‘new’ friends was hard. Effrosyni’s descriptions create a live sensation i.e. you easily see, hear, and smell. I truly fell under the spell of her apt writing, and I have only once before (when reading her novel The Lady of the Pier: The Ebb) felt this burning wish to visit Greece.

This is a book to read again.

(I received this book in exchange for an honest review)

"Sometimes, all you need to do is think back to the fairy tales of your childhood in order to be reminded what is most important in life and what is really true."

This book is amazing! I was transported backwards and forwards in time. I was entertained using the whole set of emotions. I got lost in the story. I felt like I was there. I could hardly wait to see what might happen next; however, at the same time, I wanted it to never end!

I love Mythology. My favorite book of all is The Odyssey of Homer. This book gets shelved when I can get a paper copy, right next to my Odyssey, and I can hardly wait to share it! If you read anything, read this book soon!

What a breath of fresh air.

What a breath of fresh air.

While searching for new books to interest me I came across this gem. It is like nothing I usually read but held me captive from the start. I even attempted to leave it & start another book but my mind kept returning to this simple yet mesmerizing story. Full of mystery, love, both of family, mother for child and reverse, and sweet romantic love, it is truly a breath of fresh air in any genre. Please do yourself a favor and pick up this book. You will be pleasantly surprised. RECOMMENDED

I absolutely loved this book... The story evolves in a magnificent unfolding of mythology and time travel perfectly intertwined with the present day. It immerses the reader into the culture of Athens without losing any of its fantasy/time travel/mythology allure.
The plot develops in a wonderful way, hardly 'predictable'....thus keeping the reader engaged and interested to read on to see what happens.
Fantastic book...I highly recommend it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoyed this and was pleased when the relatives were reunited. This is not a spoiler, it is always clear that the divided families will find each other again, the interest is in how and that I will not reveal. I would like to meet these characters again, but it would need to be a completely new adventure, not a follow-on as this story is quite definitely a stand-alone.

The writing is not impeccable and for a time made me hesitant to give this 5 stars. But after all, it is but a medium and the most important thing is what is portrayed by the words, so yes, 5 stars to this gem. May the truths within always remain in our hearts.

If you're 15 you might enjoy the book. Otherwise don't bother. Even Twilight is better.

The author has created an astounding novel of epic proportions which will inevitably become a future movie for TV or the big screen. She has opened this reader’s eyes to the beauty and serenity of Greece combining the new world with the old seamlessly in this story.

The main character, Phevos, an Ancient Greek, is transported to 2,000 years ahead of his time along with his younger sister, Daphne. Before their father sends them on this journey through time, he tells them to watch for the signs. The signs will lead the way for them. They are thrust into a new world that they do not know anything about. They must somehow survive on stories their father told them when they were younger along with their own instincts.

The story involves many tribulations that they must overcome, loss of family, survival in a harsh world, and dangerous obstacles put in their way created by fueding gods. The reader is caught up in this fabulous fairytale that is played out exquisitely in Effrosyni Moschoudi’s lovely prose. This tale enables the reader to travel along with the well-developed characters as they must find impossible solutions to improbable situations. The beauty and majesty of ancient and new world Greece is breathtaking to see through the eyes of the author. The tales of the Greek gods are fascinating and gripping and make the reader believe that anything is possible.

The Necklace of Goddess Athena is a creative and enjoyable tale that may one day become a classic for all. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as well as others by this talented writer. She knows how to capture the reader’s attention and hold on tight until the last page. I couldn’t put this book down but had to in order to get some sleep. It was a story that will I want to one day read again to experience not only the hardship but also the great joy the characters felt as they traveled through time.

Well written, lovely story with time travel and Athenian Gods!

There are times I get so caught up in the lives of fictional characters I forget to live my own. This was one of those times. I wished that I'd had loving parents, adventures, friends, and had found the love these characters cherished. I guess it can only happen in fiction, or to really good people.

The Necklace of Goddess Athena: A New Adult supernatural mystery by Effrosyni Moschoudi is a fascinating story of time travel. Ksenia and her twelve-year-old brother, Manos, lost their parents eleven years ago. Phevos lives in ancient Athens with his sister, Daphne, and eleven years ago his mother had disappeared. One day Phevos and Daphne's father places Athena's necklace around his neck and he and his sister are caught in a vortex and spin away. Disoriented, they are dropped into a different location and era. Following the barking of their dog, Ksenia and Manos discover the two travelers in their orchard. Although Phevos is stunned from the fall, he manages to explain that he and his sister Daphne were traveling and had gotten lost. Uncharacteristically, Ksenia accepts this and gives them a place to stay. When they discover that they have their parents' disappearances in common, together the young people begin searching through time and find help from an unexpected source. Will they be able to reunite their families, even though time and place separate them?

The Necklace of Goddess Athena: A New Adult Supernatural Mystery by Effrosyni Moschoudi is an intriguing fantasy epic similar to the Percy Jackson books. It is an excellent time-travel story, blending mythology and the present together. At first, I was slightly surprised at how Athena was portrayed. However, as the story progresses she becomes the goddess that I believed her to be. Also, I was impressed with how the author combined the two eras. I thought the way that Phevos' father introduced him and Daphne to present day living was clever. Because of their prior lessons, they didn't really have trouble adjusting to another time period. This book is a stunning masterpiece. Although this isn't the normal genre that I read, I have to say that it is so well-written that I couldn't put it down. It is a memorable story and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read and review it. This is an amazing New Adult mystery that I highly recommend to those who have a penchant for time-travel.
