Rating 5 out of 5 |Grade: A; For the Emperuh, Hell Yeah!

After reading a slew of sub-par 40K graphic novels, with at best, passable art style and story, Damnation Crusade was a much needed breath of fresh air. Then again, what else can you expect from the mind that penned, Horus Rising & Eisenhorn.

Damnation Crusade, follows the centuries old journey of a Black templar Space marine Raclaw, from the time he was first recruited from his war torn home world (which world isn't in 40K), to being a prospective aspirant, to a rookie neophyte, a war hardened battle brother, to the highest honor in the chapter, being entombed in an Imperial dreadnaught christened Tankred, called to serve in times of dire need.

Now here's the thing you need to know about Imperial Dreadnought. They are perhaps the single most important, valuable and venerated war resource for their respective chapters. Not only for the immense badassery they're able to display in the battlefield. But also because, the marines who've been entombed inside a dreadnought, are some of the best of the best that the chapter had to offer. Those who were so grievously injured over course of their service, only the Dreadnought armor is able to sustain life for them.

Damnation7

Even so, they're part machine, having melded with the inherent machine spirit of the dreadnought, and for the better part of decades will be in a state of medically induced sleep, their body submerged in amniotic fluid, their minds dreaming of past glorious battles.

This forms the crux of the narrative of the Damnation crusade, as, through the memories of Raclaw, we see the countless battlefields where he had proven his mettle, the foes whom he vanquished, and the victories he scored in the name of the Emperor. The collective weight of centuries of warfare, weighs down on Tankred, and us as viewers.

Damnation5

The whole vibe of the story, clearly way, way before the Primaris & the ret cons, has gritty, true 'grimdark' quality about it. And no one better to embody the spirit of the Eternal crusade in name of the Holy Emperor, than his most zealous adherents (bar the Sororitas).

Damnation9-8

For the Space marines of the Black Templar chapter, in addition to being one of the most lethal fighting machines being engineered by the Imperium, also have the distinction of being philosopher monks, or warrior priests in battle. Venerating the divinity of the God Emperor, not only through blade & bolter, but hymns and incantations as well. There is no foe, even from the darkest underbelly of chaos, who can make these stalwarts falter. For even in face of certain annihilation, they sing out in jubilation, for the chance given to them to praise the Emperor's name, even in death.

Damnation

There is no better device to show their eternal worship of the God Emperor, than be given the honor, of being enshrined in a dreadnought. It shows how, against overwhelming odds, and against grievous wound, too lethal even for a space marine, you held the line, and fought against the enemies of the Imperium. And now, you are given the chance to do so again, and put the ever living fear of the Golden throne of Terra into the mutant, the heretic & the xenos.

Damnation9-9-2

The art style of the book is drop dead gorgeous, in a manly sort of way. It's inventive in the way it showcases the never-ending conflicts as well as the multitudinous legions of enemies that the Imperium has to face on a regular basis.

Damnation9-2

Each faction and enemy is given a unique theme, and color palette, which immediately helps to distinguish them. Which is amazing considering how most of the panels are bathed in dark, DARK shadowy contrast. That is in addition to the already dark armor of the Dark templars.

Damnation6

The whole affair has a clearly old school, 80s era Rogue trader vibe to it. You got to love the return to basics, which allows them to tap just the right amount of nostalgia without the grimdark being too grimderp.

Damnation9-1

Damnation9-3

Damnation9-6

Plus, the panels are stock filled with all manner of badass one liners, many of which the fans would've seen circulating around as memes or screenshots. Well, now you know where it all came from. Some of my favorites include:

Damnation3

Damnation4

In the being of almost all Warhammer 40k media, you see the tag line

"In the Grim darkness of the far future, there is only war"

Damnation Crusade is the first graphic novel of the genre which I've read, which is able to properly convey the soul crushing gravitas of that statement. As we see the Black Templar, battling the Eldar, the Orks, Chaos Legions, Tau, and the other innumerable foes across a thousand battlefields, across centuries of warfare, making the title of the story all the more meaningful.

So, for any hardcore warhammer 40k fans out there, this is a must read. Go on now!

In Warhammer however there are NO women! Which makes it a little hard to take seriously! One of these days I'd love to read all the Warhammer books and write a feminist Warhammer novel. Cause it really is a very interesting setting. I found a cheap copy of this in French in the Quintos basement. It was a good read in French, and not too difficult. I was pleased reading the reviews of the English copies on here to see that I had actually understood what was going on. It was a good introduction to the universe, lots of fighting, and a little tragedy thrown in. I liked the jumping between time periods. I'm missing volume 2 but am going to read vols. 3 and 4 anyway.

Bookworm Speaks!

Warhammer 40k: Damnation Crusade by Dan Abnett and Ian Edginton.

****

Once again we return to the grim darkness of the far future, following in the footsteps of the illustrious Black Templars Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes.

The Story: The story follows several Space Marines of the Black Templars Chapter in their eternal crusade across the galaxy to purge the Imperium of the mutant, alien, and heretic. Three characters are the focus of the story: Sword Brethren Gerhart is an accomplished fighter who fears he is succumbing to the sin of pride, Recruit Raclaw, who has been chosen to become a Black Templar, takes his first steps into a universe of endless war, and Brother Tankred, a Dreadnought, a mortally wounded Space Marine that has been hardwired into a cybernetic battle suit, as they battle vile foes of the Emperor in the Black Templar’s never ending crusade.

The Good: The fact that its a comic book. The Warhammer 40k novels are spectacular and provide a lot of fruit for the mind’s eye to feast upon, but seeing the Imperium of Man rendered in full color, it is simply a treat.

The artwork is top of the line and the cover art is simply iconic to Warhammer 40,000. Warhammer is known for its energetic and action-packed narratives and the artists do a good job of transcribing it to the visual spectrum.

Warhammer 40,000 is a vast universe with a great amount of lore behind it. So much in fact it can be overwhelming to a beginning reader. Thankfully, the writers provide brief data entries at the beginning of each chapter that briefly describe many of the details of the universe. It is by no means complete but it provides enough material for the beginner. This was very considerate on the part of the writers.

Space Marines are the meat and potatoes of the Black Library and we see them at various stages of their training throughout the novels. In Damnation Crusade, we see a Space Marines training from beginning to end. This is something rarely encountered in fiction and adds another layer of detail to the Astartes and significantly fleshes them out beyond an encyclopedia entry.

The plot is non liner, which will be addressed later, but the story that is being told is where this book shines. The Imperium of Man is a horrible place to live and it is besieged on all sides by enemies that are even worse. But the Space Marines fight on and will not yield. That is the strength of humanity and the message that Bookworm feels, Warhammer 40k is trying to tell with all of its stories. Even against impossible odds, in a hellish galaxy, that never cuts them a break, mankind lives and mankind endures.

The Flaws: Once again we encounter a problematic trend that has suffused the graphic novel medium: the non linear storyline. When reading the whole thing through it becomes obvious why this technique was utilized in order provide the twist at the end (No Spoilers). When it comes full circle the non-linear storyline comes to fruition but when reading it, the story becomes a little confusing. The timeline jumps between the adventures of various Space Marines, and it becomes hard to tell what story is being told at the moment.

There is very little else that can be said is at fault with this volume. Some may find that the sheer guts and glory motif rather tiring but that is a nitpick if nothing else. However, it is the flaw previously mentioned that does prevent Bookworm from giving Damnation Crusade a full five out five.

Final Verdict: Damnation Crusade is a fascinating and thrilling look into one of the most iconic Chapters of the Space Marines and Warhammer 40,000. The artwork is great and the characters are compelling.

The Emperor Protects.

Four out of Five Stars.

In 2006, Boom Studios obtained from Games Workshop a license to create Warhammer comics. Previously the Black Library published its own comics and collections, so this was new and different. They decided to start w/ a series to introduce newer readers to the Warhammer 40k universe.

And what a magnificent introduction it is. This is the story of 3 space marines. The book opens and ends with the death of Brother Gerhardt, a Black Templar of the Adeptus Astartes. In addition to seeing how Gerhardt arrived at his fate, we've got Raclaw the novitiate and Tankred the Dreadnaught. Every faction (Tau, Necrons, Eldar, Tyrannid, Imperial Guard) makes a brief appearance, but the main conflict is the eternal war between the Imperium of Man and the forces of Chaos.

On Dan Abnett I've already said too much. He is one of my favorite authors. He knows all things Warhammer like the back of his hand. I don't remember reading any prose by Ian Edginton, but I am familiar with his work in comics (Aliens: Rogue, War of the World, etc). In a universe full of mad scientists, he created Ernst Kleist, a villain even more demented than Paul Church from Aliens: Labyrinth. So when I say the writing is good, please believe that is an understatement; the dialogue is superb. Couple examples:

Tankred: uuhh
Adept: The goliath awakes too soon! Our work is not yet done!
Arnulf: The war damage runs deeper than was foreseen. The gearing cam has ruptured the pressure lines. Hydraulic vitae has corrupted the amniotic fluid, diluting the somnabulin! If he rouses fully, he will suffer the full agonies of his surgeries unanesthetized. Stand by to cap the hydraulics. Prepare to flush and transfuse with fresh amniotics and somnambulin.
Tankred: Arnulf?
Arnulf: Yes... My lord Tankred?
Tankred: No more sleep, for now.
Arnulf: But the procedures, my lord. There will be pain!
Tankred: Do not preach to Tankred! Don't you think Tankred knows the meaning of pain?
Arnulf: I beseech your forgiveness. I meant no disrespect.
Tankred: Neither did Tankred. Tankred does not fear pain. It is.. an illusion.. of the senses. Tell your creatures to be about their industry.
Arnulf: It shall be done.
Tankred: Arnulf?
Arnulf: Lord?
Tankred: Stay with Tankred while they work. Let us talk of past glories before I surrender to slumber once more.
Arnulf: It will be an honor.

Also:

Kine: I am Lord Kine, your nemesis! Look upon me and despair! You will not die here, man of flesh and faith! We shall take you and break you and pour corruption into your soul until it is as mothers' milk. Then, when you are a ruined, wretched thing, we shall set you upon your own--a maddened dog of war. What have you to say to such delights?
Gerhardt: My name... hnnnk! My name is Gerhardt! *spit* Hnnnk! I am of the sword brethren of Marshall Kor--hnnnk!--Marshall Korneliusz's fighting company. Not tell me--hnnk! Who wants to be first?

The art is a bit inconsistent because the artists change from issue to issue, but that is a small complaint. Each artist brings different details to light and the colors are as vivid as any I've ever seen.

This book went out of print a long time ago. It's only available used at high markup but I strongly feel it is a bargain at any price

Solid, a comic not a "paperback novel" though as the listing suggests.

Good for what it is, enjoyable enough to burn through in a short while. Yes, as one of the other posters mentioned, there are no women. But he made the bold statement that warhammer has no women, which is patently false.

It may be dominated by male characters, but there are more than a few powerful women in 40k (and warhammer fantasy), and I know at least in 40k theirs an entire specialized I nquisitorial military chapter (similar to a space marine chapter) that consit's entirely of women who hunt down psykers, and psychic entities.

Nice comic. It's not a sweeping tale, but a solid telling of certain events. I enjoyed the art. I think it was done exceptionally well when portraying settings, such as the inside cathedral of the cruisers or the sweeping skyline of a planet. Kinetic movement is a little bland. That is to say the 'action' leaves something to be desired, however the art is solid in all other aspects. If you're a fan of 40k and have the money I don't see what would keep you.

This is a pretty cool story. It's all centered around Space Marines. I like the way the story unfolds, even if the surprises aren't super surprising. I don't love the art, but some panels do look pretty darned good. A worthy read for fans of the Warhammer 40K universe.

Nice to have a story with more of a focus on character than action. The "twist" is telegraphed from a mile away, but it's still an interesting perspective to see.

Now for the reviews... The first tale is called Damnation Crusade and is a tale of the Black Templars. There is an interlinked stories of a sword-bearer Gerhart as he batle throught several warzones. Their brethern think he has some flaws that are considered a sin in the Black Templars Chapter. The second tale is of Tankred a dreadnought who battles in the name of the emperor. The third tale is a of a recruit called Raclaw as he fights is kinsman to become a neophyte (a space marine student (?). This tales are interlinked are hinted that Raclaw was Gerhart before he was a battle brother then he was injured and incorporated into the dreadnought where he comes Tankred. The last scene is interlinked with the first as the dreadnought battles a Daemon Prince where he fights and wins.

This was the first Warhammer40k comic that i have read. From then on i was hooked to the universe of Warhammer40k and the Black Templars became the chapter of my choice. This comic follows the life of a Black Templar Dreadnought Tankred, who even in serves even in death. A very interesting and well drawn comic, worth reading and re-reading again. Dan Abnett being the author for this comic was like a bonus as once again he uses his 'multiple storylines converging' style while really fitted this comic well. If you are unsure if you want to be a fan of Warhammer40k, just take a look of this comic and be convinced.

Really good artwork. All in all a good character introduction and a general intro to 40K/the Space marines.

The nonlinear storytelling gives it some charm but if you are a frequent black library/40K reader the story does not bring anything new. I guess it was supposed to be the basis of a longer series that unfortunately never got made as far as I know.

This is a 40k graphic novel and its been out for awhile. I read this again last night and it was a fun and very well drawn, inked and colored book. Space Marines, in desperate battle against seemingly unbeatable odds. It doesn't get much better. Just a great read.
