Karla knew she loved Sebastian and his son, Jack. So when he arranges a week-long camping trip, she gathers the courage to invite herself along. What was supposed to be a week of passion quickly turns into a week of hell, and she finds herself fighting for the lives of those she loves.
Sebastian never dared dream any woman would be interested in single father. When Karla asks to come on the camping trip, the attraction between them is almost more than he can handle. The fire of desire inside takes second place, though, as the world around them quickly narrows to one thing—survival.
Will Karla and Sebastian succeed in protecting not only themselves, but his son Jack and Jack's girlfriend Rachael? Or will they end up just another meal for the strange creatures with familiar faces?
Leona Bushman goes by many names but the most common one is superhero. She earned this name from saving a kangaroo from a tree—and yes that is as hard as it sounds. The dragons taught their queen how to write, and Queen Leona hasn't looked back. Even when her muse tries to muck things up. After fairly recently being converted to The Walking Dead I was in need of a zombie fix while I wait on the next episode! This definitely delivers on that. Like Walking Dead it is much more about the characters than the zombies and the mix of romance and horror was very well balanced. The zombie story itself was well thought out and although I don’t read a lot in this genre I haven’t seen it dealt with this way before, it had some interesting and unique twists to the typical zombie trope.
The pace was good, constantly holding my attention and balancing the emotional/romance scenes and the external horror scenes well. It definitely provides an emotional roller-coaster at times – I went from smiling to hiding under the covers to reaching for the tissues. The style of writing also had some nice touches, I liked the diary entries at the starts of the chapters. It gave it an interesting double timeframe and gave some tantalising hints of what was to come.
Character-wise, I loved Sebastian, if you do have to run for your life from zombies, well you want someone like this to do it with! He had a definite alpha male streak, yet would still step back and trust Kara to get things done; that along with the sex appeal, caring nature and struggling single father role thrown in will combine to create your next book boyfriend crush :)
Kara in contrast didn’t seem quite as well developed, but she was still relatable and I liked that she was tough in the face of difficult situations. Perhaps I’m just slightly resentful as the woman seems capable of orgasming with the barest of touches. :) That was my only minor complaint about the otherwise well written and steamy sex scenes.
Overall the story was well written and would highly recommend. I would have perhaps liked a little more information about the end, it seemed to tie up rather quickly, but the way it was handled was believable and even the character reactions done well. (Oh, and I still don't think I've forgiven the author for the dog and the horses!) But, if like me you’re waiting on your next Daryl fix then this hits the spot nicely :)
I'll be the first to admit I am not a huge fan of Zombies. I grew up with George Romero's "Living Dead" series and those guys were in no way appealing or anything approaching even luke warm sexy to me.
Slow Burn is a good, fast paced, easy read from beginning to end. I ran a gamut of emotions I wasn't expecting to feel and that is always, in my book, the mark of a truly great writer. To make their world and characters so vital and alive (irony, oui?) that you are flipping pages faster than Bobby Flay flips burgers.
The setting, locale and atmosphere enriched the background, adding flavor to the overall plot which I loved, loved, loved!
Sebastian, the smexy male lead. Omnomnom. That about sums up how I feel about him. And Karla, the female protagonist was sassy and strong.
All in all, I'd not only recommend this book to those who love horror and romance, but to anyone who simply is looking for a terrific read by a delightful author.

It's been awhile since I enjoyed a zombie book. The last couple have been too cliche, and seemed to miss the point. 'Slow Burn', however, does not. This is a cracking zombie romance. I was engaged throughout reading 'Slow Burn' by Leona Bushman, inhaling it quickly. There's a fabulous level of action of action, on top of plenty of glorious heat between the characters.
Sebastian was a character who was so easy to follow and lust after. Not only was he the epitome of all it means to be an alpha, he was a sexy one of that. His character was engaging and pushed the narrative along beautifully.
I really enjoyed Karla too. However, I didn't connect with her as easily. The connection between the two was pretty fabulous and perfectly written and described.
I enjoyed this take on the zombie romance genre. was a page turner from start to finish. A quick read with plenty of action (and I don't mean just the hot sex...lol) and a truly wonderful hero.
Sebastian is the type of man that makes romances worth reading and keeps us readers coming back for more. Sexy, caring, an alpha male with a strongly defined sense of honor, he was the driving force behind this story. Karla was slightly less developed but still a delightful character and when the two come together...WOW!
I am hoping Leona Bushman plans to write more stories like this. I will certainly be looking forward to them.
I'm a total horror and romance fan, and I think Leona does an excellent job tying the two together.
After Karla invites herself to go on a camping trip with Sebastian, his teenage son, and son's girlfriend, she goes prepared to hunt, ride horses, and sleep outdoors. She didn't know she'd have to use her weapons to survive.
I loved Karla and Sebastian's desperate need for each other. And those scenes were hot!
I also enjoyed the OMG he's going to die moments. Zombies that have mind control powers, drive cars, and have fun eating each other...what more do you want?
There are only a handful of books in the world that once you read them, you can't stop thinking about them. This book is definitely one. I laughed, I cried, I even gagged during the course of this story. No book has ever pushed me through so many range of emotions and left me feeling like I truly lived by the character's sides like this one. If you want a hot horror story with zombies, I highly recommend this book. And if you don't find yourself moved to tears at least once...well I think maybe the zombies already got you. ;)
