Librarian's note: This is an alternate cover edition for ASIN: B00CQ6P9OI.
19-year-old Saffi March is not the perfect girl everyone thinks she is. When the pressure of pretending becomes too much, she escapes for a weekend and transforms herself into another persona - a hardcore groupie for the rockstar also known as Sweden's #1 Sex God, Staffan Aehrenthal.
One look at the beautiful girl hopelessly trying to hide her innocence behind skimpy dresses and garish makeup and Staffan immediately knows the groupie called "H" is hiding a secret. He also knows he needs her desperately. He's determined to make her his, the only girl who's able to soothe the demons in him.
But before Staffan can let Saffi into his life, those stars in her eyes have to go - and he'll do everything for that to happen, even if it means cruelly hurting Saffi until she realizes that he would never trust anyone with his heart again. NOTE: This novel is over 50,000 words long. This work is suitable for readers 18 years old and above.
This book was like the retelling of every single fairy tale stories I adored as a child. And what's wonderful about fairy tales is that they make you believe in happily ever after. When Fangirls Lie is kind of like that.
Sapphire "Saffi" March is a beautiful girl from a well to do family. She's a genius too. The only problem is that Saffi is very eccentric, a fish-loving eccentric genius, but socially awkward girl. And coming from a conservative family, she stands out like a sore thumb. But Saffi's biggest eccentricity isn't her penchant for all things fish but her all out devotion to Sweden's #1 sex god, Staffan Aehrenthal.
Ah, Staffan. Described in the blurb as handsome like a classical statue but earthy and sexy like a pagan god, Staffan is your typical rock star man 'ho. He wasn't always like that though but he had been betrayed in the past by the woman he loved and her betrayal sent Staffan down the path to self-destruction.
So what happens when Saffi, the naive, innocent and lovable girl meets Staffan, the cynical, jaded, albeit hot rock star?
Yeah. I forgot to tell you. This fairy tale ain't for little girls folks. Let me just say I was pleasantly surprise by how, ahem, steamy this book was, which really, really, really made me happy.
But it was Saffi and her love of all things fish that made this book for me. I just loved her eccentricities and her expressions. She was quirky and lovable and I was totally rooting for her from page one. She was a breath of fresh air, which was a surprise because if it had been any other book, she would probably be annoying. But considering the story line and the way the author developed her character, Saffi endeared herself to me.
As much as Saffi was adorable, Staffan really tested my tolerance. Not because he was unlikable but because of the things he did that really, really hurt me--I mean, Saffi. I wanted to kick his beautiful ass to the curb for doing those things to poor Saffi.
He did some really nice groveling though, so I forgive him but boy, did he put me through the ringer with his antics.
To me, what makes a book wonderful isn't just about the writing, and this one was really well written, but as a reader, I wanted to be able to relate to the characters. If I don't feel any connection to them or their story, the author pretty much failed in my book, no matter how brilliant the writing is.
Fortunately, I did feel the connection here. The fairy tale element, as I mentioned before, was quite strong. Meaning that as a reader, I had to suspend reality and allow myself to be pulled into a surreal world where rock stars do fall in love the quirky and nerdy girl. So if you like your story a bit on a realistic, gritty side, this might not work for you. But if you're in a mood for some good old romantic tale, then this book is totally for you.
Yes, this book did end with an HEA but Saffi and Staffan's story has a continuation. But this book can be read as a standalone, whether you continue to read book two or not, is up to you.
Soo.. I really don't know what to say … they overall story was definitely different, BUT it was just solo extreme and TOO much. I don't know if i liked it or hated it. I can't believe someone so smart would act like that and let herself be treated so badly. In the beginning i liked staffan. but as i continued reading i really hated his character!!!!! First staffan's totally obsessed with her and when he finally meets her, he doesnt admit knowing who she is. So decides to treat her like shit and let's other ppl treat her like shit. How could she forgive him so easily for all the crap he put her through. especially his last stunt on stage!!! Anyhow, they do end up together but it's still an open ending since she's still hiding a big secret from him. And knowing him he'll fuck up again.
In short, if you want to read about a girl forgetting her selfesteem, selfworth, becomes a piece of meat, and in the end still forgives the guy for the millionth time for being the biggest asshole ever.. THEN by all means this is your book.
I loved this book. It was funny and also made me cry. I loved how cute and totally nerdy Saffi was and how she had such a good heart. Staffan was a definitely an ass during the parts with the fan date. Just for that I almost gave this 4 stars.
Are we going to see books on Steel and Silver, Saffi's brothers? I really hope so!
Sapphire “Saffi” March is the number 1 fan of rockstar singer Staffan Aehrenthal. For his fans, Staffan gives the occasional phone call to wish them a Happy Birthday, this time, Saffi is the lucky girl. After an amusing conversation, Staffan is intrigued by Saffi and he begins to stalk her online presence.
Saffi is naïve, beautiful, intelligent, young and pretty god-damn crazy. Staffan cannot wait any longer to see her, he sends her a VIP ticket to one of his shows.
On the advice of a fellow fangirl, Saffi believes that Steffan likes his women to be slutty and experienced, disguising herself as a Groupie is the sure way to get into his bed. She's terrible at covering up her eccentricity, but Staffan knows the real her. Unfortunately for him, the real her is adorable, funny, strong and lovable, he can't keep her around for fear of his melting heart can he?
Ahhh I did love this book, it was totally crazy, there was hot sex, he was an ass some of the time and it was lovably far fetched.
For those of you who need to know, without totally spoiling the story... Is there a HEA? Is there a cliffhanger? And is there any heartbreak?.............
Shel: Let me start by saying that if you are not into the whole erotica thing, then you may not want to read this book because the sexual episodes start very early in the book and they continue, often, throughout.
Shel: Sapphire March AKA Saffi is a very young postgraduate school genius (she's 19), the daughter of a senator, and promised to be engaged to someone who is guaranteed to help her father's political career. By all appearance very studious, proper, and good--right? She is, except this one weekend when she decides to just throw caution to the wind and live the life of a groupie/fangirl to Staffan. Staffan is THE uber star...apparently known for his sex god /love 'em and leave 'em ways.
Court: I was super glad that it was clarified how Saffie was a postgrad student at 19. That coupled with her flat out online obsession with this "sex god" rock star painted a very confusing picture of who she was. She's very young and innocent and tries to play with the big boys and tries her hardest not to get burned. She spent most of the book doing things for others and never, ever looking out for herself so that was a big turnoff for me for this story. Not that all heroines always have it figured out, but Saffie for sure takes the cake for making horrible decisions.
Shel: Anyway, Saffi has the opportunity to meet her ultimate crush, Staffan, and decides to do everything in her power to get as close to him (in EVERY way possible) as she can. And she does but only because he's manipulated the situation to get close to her.
Court: Here is where I really got turned off. I for sure have no issues with a steamy read, and that was okay, but when they get together (and it is obvious he gets with a lot, and I mean a lot of people) and he says he doesn't have any condoms and she says "it's okay, I got on the pill for you"...I was pretty much done. I'm sorry, just No. I could not wrap my mind around it...where you meet a rock star that just picked you out of a lineup of girls like you were a cow and then you aren't actually with him and trust him, and then still don't use protection. Stu-to the-pid. I suspend reality a lot, because that is what fiction is for and it is great, but this was not for me.
Shel: As the weekend commences we see that Saffi is awkward and clumsy and trying too hard to be the ultimate fangirl/groupie (pausing here to say: I had no idea there was a hierarchy of fans/groupies and that they went to such ..ahem.. lengths to bed a star) and it amuses everyone around her. While she may be an epic failure at being a seductress, her attempts only endear her to Staffan and he feels compelled to make her his (even if he's been torn to shreds by his last serious girlfriend).
Court: After I spent a lot of time cursing Saffie for being stupid about protecting herself from something such as say, gonorrhea (Sorry, it's the nurse in me...or just the adult in me) and then she let's all of this people be really really mean to her, including Staffan, all for the love of a rockstar that she just does not know. Fangirl or not, she does not know this person. Maybe for her being so incredibly smart, she just didn't have street smarts? But I'm not sure it makes me feel better.
Shel: By the end of the story we get the sense that we might have a happily ever after until we see the sneak peek of the next book.
Shel: This novel is a short 123 pages and everything moves at a rapid fire pace-- the action and relationships formed would, I don't think, actually happen but since this is a fictional world, anything goes. And it does. There are private planes, expensive hotel, wealthy parents, fist fights, and most of all deception and lies. Oh and sex. Lots and lots of sex.
Court: I am a goodreads obsessor, so in doing so I do obviously value the opinion of others and we've seen that When Fangirls Lie has gotten many a star of love. While I don't think it worked for either of us, I do commend Marian Tee for writing the story that she wanted to write, and put a piece of herself out there for all of us to read and that is always a beautiful thing.
Shel: So--this is the book for you if you like the idea of a rockstar/groupie girl whirlwind romance, you like erotica, and you want a quick read.
A fantastic read! I was absolutely enthralled with the story from beginning to end and can't wait to start the next book! But before we get to that, let's talk about this first book, shall we?
When Fangirls Lie is definitely an interesting read. It is cliche in the sense that it has an innocent, quirky heroine who captures the heart of a playboy rockstar with his own past relationship drama, but I think Marian Tee did a fantastic job making this story both entertaining and unique.
First off, you have Saffi March/Sapphire/Horny/H, our 19 year old quirky leading lady.
How the heck could she compete with that when all she knew about sex was from free Amazon erotica novels?
Normally I hate when the heroine is an innocent girl who's put up on a pedestal for being the girl that everyone loves and can't possibly hate (except for the antagonist characters), but I think I was more accepting of Saffi (heck, I LOVE her) because she's absolutely (and hilariously) weird and comes with her own flaws. Nothing makes me love a character more when he/she is funny, weird, and flawed. She is also a character to be sympathized as you go in a little deeper about her lonely past, but you also admire her that much more for being strong and brushing the pain off. Saffi is a girl that you can't hate because she has qualities that make her lovable --- quirky, hilariously innocent, imperfect, strong, sweet, and caring.
As for the male love interest, Staffan, he's your typical playboy rockstar that resists and denies the obvious developing feelings he has for our leading lady. While he is stupid and frustrating for being so stubborn, his love for Saffi's quirks is endearing. Still, you'll love and hate him throughout the novel with the actions he takes in response to Saffi.
The romance in the story felt real to me. I wouldn't say it's the best love story out there, but I really enjoyed it because I found their love to be endearing and adorable. While they did have quite a bit of sex/steamy moments, I think it was the right amount of balance between romance and erotic. A rockstar who gives you an orgasm live on stage (albeit behind the curtain) and gives you an Alice in Wonderland themed miniature treasure chest because Alice's daydreaming quality reminds him of you?
Overall, I absolutely loved this book! I loved the dual POVs (with an occasional POV from a minor character), there was a generous dose of comedy, I kept switching from swooning to feeling horny, and I just couldn't get enough of Saffi's adorable personality. I'll admit I was ready to give this book a 3 because it ended with unanswered questions, but once I found out that there'd be a book 2 I was like
I highly recommend this novel for those who enjoy NA romance/erotic novels that contain comedy, a strange heroine, a sexy rockstar, and a situation that contain a whole bunch of face palm worthy events!
Where to start, where to start,... I suggest you first read the How Not to be Seduced by Billionaires series if you want to, it's not necessary but if you're planning to read it, read it before this book. Moving on. I literally laughed my ass off most of the time while reading this book. When fangirls lie is filled with awkward and uncomfortable situations. You know, sometimes I felt like I was experiencing the embarassing situations Saffi got herself into which resulted into me having to stop reading cuz it got too embarasing to handle. Don't get me wrong this is a plus! I think it takes skill to make your reader feel like they are experiencing it all. Speaking about Saffi, she stole my heart, I just love her. Saffi is so forgiving that one time I almost cried, so touched I was with her wonderful character. This doesn't mean that I didn't want to slap some sense into her, sometimes it was just too much and I wanted her to stop being so damn forgiving! Then we can't forget about, the one and only mr. rockstar, Staffan! Let's talk about the swoon worthy son of a bitch. I have a hard time explaining my feeling regarding Staffan only that I love him so I'm gonna use a few of my fav. quotes, it's impossible not to love him after reading the following quotes. Here we go!
Why should it be when God gave him his own angel – his very own Alice, who said her Wonderland was any place that had him in it – just for Staffan to fucking throw it away?
I will love you every fucking day of my life, devote every fucking minute of it to making you happy.
Life with you will be one eternally wonderful dance, a sweet waltz, a passionate tango, a crazy breakdance
I’m yours alone.
Now let's all take a moment and swoon... ❤
This book is a quick, fun must read! NEED the next one!
*some notes* -> in the beginning I was kinda confused Staffan called Yanna the girlfriend and wife of his friend -> Suit & Tie is really one of Marian's fav songs -> I liked the writing style, the switching in POV's -> You always use the most awsome names in your books! BTW I know what schat means *happy dance*, perks of speaking Dutch
I have never read anything by this author and now that I have I feel like I have missed the best thing since sliced bread!!!! I have found another favorite author. She pulls you in and you can't wait to see what will happen next. I will be sure to have all of her books on my must read list.
Sapphire “Saffi” March was the #1 fangirl of Staffan Aehrenthal, Sweden’s #1 Rock star and Sex God. She truly “loves” him for him and not his stardom. There is just something that she sees in him that seems like no one else can see. So she is a fan but for all different reasons. She gets a birthday call from him, which is one of the perks of the fan club members, and they have a great connection on the phone. Saffi March is the daughter of a Senator and has grown up to be the embarrassment of the family. So when weeks later, she gets a ticket to a concert, she needs to be someone different when she goes there, needs to be someone more like you see him with in the tabloids… and that is when the lies and the “fun” begins. Staffan knows who she is, thanks to Facebook, when he sends the tickets to her and planned to “hand select” her from the crowd to be able to spend the weekend with her. She pretends to be a “groupie” and acts nothing like herself, but yet he can still see her quirky self in some of the stories she comes up with. It warms his hear and during the weekend together, they fall for each other, but he has walls around his heart and she has to try to break those walls down. This story is well written. There are some “laugh out loud” moments when you hear how quirky Saffi can be. She studies fish and when she gets upset, some of the things she comes up with are funny. “Suffering Sardines” was one of the first things he remembers hearing her say on the phone. You can feel how sweet she is and funny and you can also feel how Staffan really likes her, but fights with himself because he has been hurt in the past. I enjoyed how the author tells the story from all different sides and she brings in some drama from the past for both characters. This story covers a lot for being only 192 pages. It seemed longer and had some “hot” steamy scenes. This is the first book I have read from this author, but won’t be my last.
Lies, lies, lies... they always come back to bite you. I was surprised by this book. It was not at all what I expected, but in a good way. I found myself really feeling what the characters were feeling.
Staffan Aehrenthal, Europe's bad boy rock star, is used to having his way. He knows what the women who stalk him want, and how to give it to them. He has a reputation of sleeping with those of his Groupies that he personally selects. But not anymore. Not since that phone call he made to his "birthday fangirl". Each month he makes a phone call to one of his fans. And each month the conversation is always the same. Ending with the fan giving herself to him to do with what he wants.
Until he calls Sapphire March, Saffi, on her birthday. She is such a breath of fresh air, the things she says to him are completely unexpected and funny. She brightens his day.
Saffi, wants desperately to meet her favorite rock star Staffan. She'll do anything she has to, to give her virginity to him. Including pretending to be someone she's not. A Groupie. What Saffi does not realize is Staffan has been cyber-stalking her since he made that phone call. He wants to know everything about her. He thinks of nothing but her. She just might be the one to break the chains around his heart once and for all.
If only he can get her to tell him the truth about herself. It's a dangerous game they play the weekend Saffi attends his concert. She's pretending to be what she thinks he wants, and he's doing everything he can to get her to open up to him and tell him the truth.
This book had a bit of everything, It was well written, fast paced and had great character development. There were times I was laughing out loud and then just around the corner I was crying right along with the characters. It was a great, quick read.
This book started with so many promises, a good little girl in love with a rockstar.
I have read some books by the same author, she writes quite nicely but this book wasn't my cup of tea.
A 2.5 star.
Story without spoiler - So, there is this girl who is the daughter of the Senator and sister to really popular people. She is also a huge fan of a rock star, Staffan. Sapphire or Saffi wants to be a dutiful daughter, thus she goes to his show changing her entire self. She dresses in the shortest clothes and acts like a Groupie.
What I didn't understand was?
Didn't she have any self respect? Its completely okay to dress in whatever you like, say whatever you want but actually ready to be sexually .....what's the word... It can't be molested because she was all set for it....but well the guy literally did sexual things to her on the stage in front of thousands of people and the good girl had no problem. The book is just sex sex sex after that, no story. Well, some of us readers WANT A STORY. It was just too much for me. I don't have problem with Novels that contain adult stuff. I am like, okay if I don't like it, I will skip it. But this story...well how could the person be portrayed as a innocent good little dutiful girl if she does that...again and again. There was also this one scene...
The Rockstar asks her and some other girls to kiss wherever they want, so where do you think she kisses him?
Oh no ...
No
Nah
Its the forehead. Sisterly much?
Like way wrong, even I will not do that.. I will be like
"Can we take a selfie for my instagram? Also will you please follow me?"
This book had a lot more sexy hotness in it than the other books of Marian's that I've read, but I mean come on- he's Sweden's #1 Sex God. XD Kinda foreshadows the future sexy atmosphere lol.
I love this! And I'm dying with regret for reading it now because the second book isn't out, yet. T_T
At first I wasn't too excited about the plot because all I knew at the time was that she was going to act like a Groupie to meet Staffan. I like sex so it wasn't that hard to endure. XD But as the story continued, I found out that she wanted a weekend's worth of memories with her rockstar before having to go back to reality, where she's the daughter of a US senator and soon to be married to someone else.
She is just too cute!!! Like seriously, the stuff she does without thinking it through is hilarious, but it's that awkwardness that gets her closer to Staffan. And her way of swearing... suffering sardines, fluttering flounder? haha Cute way of mixing curses with her passion for fish. ^.^
And gosh, the sneak peek at the second book? It killed me all over again. I gots to knowwwwww. T___T
So this is an author you should really keep in mind, but if you're squeamish when it comes to sex-sex-sex and girls who are so passionate, they'll endure almost anything for it, then maybe you shouldn't read it right away. Wouldn't want you to go do something crazy like give it two stars or something. :P
The thing I love most about Marian's writing is that ability to make you feel such extreme emotions for her characters. This is not the first book Marian has done this to me. I have read many of Marian's stories and I should be immune to her abilities but damn she's good. If you are familiar with Marian's writings you will know that she does not do happily ever after, maybe happy for now but not ever after. Plus she is fabulous about writing such love turmoil between characters that you just want to strangle everyone. It seems that the rock start and billionaire stories are becoming more and more popular, and Marian has combined those two together for When Fangirls Lie. Without giving too much away, Saffi is a hard core fan of rock star Staffan Aehrenthal. Determined to show that she is his number one fan/groupie, Saffi gets the opportunity to show him that she is just that. Trying to pull off that you are the most sexually experienced woman when you nothing but a virgin proves to Saffi that she just might be in over her head. The last thing Staffan wanted was to fall for another woman after the worst relationship ever with Chloe. Determined to have Saffi but keep her at a distance backfires when he does some of the most stupid things known to man. Why are men so stupid?.... Enjoy!
I have never read a Marian Tee novel before now and I must say I am not disappointed. This book has me hooked and I looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series ties in. Now I haven't read the series to which these are a spin off to but that doesn't mean that I won't look for them later on in the future.
I like Saffi March. There are two sides of her- one side is naive and intelligent and the other side sexy, feisty, and hilarious. Saffi's life is changed one night when Staffan, a Sex God of a rock star, gives her a birthday call. Of course the Staffan is currently in a sex slump and is looking for someone new to share his bed. The moment he hears Saffi's voice he knows he has found the one he wants more than anything. Of course he gets teased by his two friends, Yanna and her boyfriend, billionaire, Constantijin.
I really enjoyed the friendship between Constantijin and Staffan. The baiting between the two and the possessive jealousy Constantijin feels when Staffan flirts with Yanna was funny.
All in all, I highly recommend this book. Just beware that there is sex and if you are not comfortable, then this book won't be for you.
So this was a free book and I loved it! I really love that Staffan pretty much stalks her for months on facebook, twitter, and anything else he can find her on. After calling one of his fans on their birthday, he is stunned when she doesn't play the normal game with him. Saffi is the one girl that has bought this man back to life and he can't wait to get his hands on her. He arranges for her to come to his concert and backstage where he is just waiting to be alone with her. I was a little upset over him trying to destory the stars in her eyes so that they could really be together. I did like that she was strong enough to walk away from him and try to move on with her life even when it broke her heart to leave him.
This is the first part of this series and I can't wait to see what happens next. This one does have an ending but it is left open for the 2nd book.
Naive-innocent-hilarious-quirky-awkward-forgiving heroine. Check! Oh and did I mention hilarious? Yep. FUCKING HILARIOUS.
Selfish-arrogant-hot-swoon worthy-son-of-a-bitch hero. Check! Oh and did I mention arrogant? Yep. FUCKING ARROGANT. (But he's HOT so maybe that makes it acceptable?)
I really don't know how to rate this book. I loved it. I hated it. There are times when I was so shocked I thought my eyes were gonna fall out. There are times when I laughed so hard, my shoulders were shaking uncontrollably. And there are also times I was so pissed I want to throw my phone away.
This is a super fun read. I think I never laughed so hard over a book like this before. So maybe I'd just go for 4 stars.
This was a quick and fun read with lots of sexy times. I didn't think I would enjoy this book so much. What sold me this book were the characters, particularly Saffi. Although innocent and naive, she is feisty, smart, fearless, and hilarious! I laughed so hard at some of the predicaments she got herself into. There are still a lot of unanswered questions in this book, which I hope the sequel(s) will provide. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.
It was a fun, good read...it had me laughing aloud at Saffi's antics. Staffan was an alpha through and through with a soft side when it comes to the woman he loves. It ends in a cliffhanger - can't wait until the next book comes out.
Saffi is a smart, sweet and sheltered young woman. Staffan is a hot rock star. Saffi wants just one weekend with him. Saffi leaves him with broken ribs and a broken heart. I laughed and I cried. I can't want for the next book.
Loved this story! I was very funny and very enlightening. It was a big surprise to me that this book was part of the "How not to be seduced by the billionaire". I didn't know there was another book in the series. Great funny read. I can't wait to read the next book by Marian Tee.
