(vol. 1-4 tamat)

….saya jadi lumayan terkesan.

This book is rated Teen by the people at Seven Seas Entertainment and has scenes of tank combat though as of yet no casualties due to some kind of mechanic that once struck a tank is immobilized and a white flag pops up (at least I think that is how it works from the one clean hit I saw.) In my opinion any subtle sexuality can be easily missed by anyone younger then a teen if you wish to allow slightly younger readers to go through this book so long as you are okay with them reading about the elegant womanly art of Tankery. :)

At first I was not sure what to think when one of my friends brought me this book to read but who am I to look down on a book just because it sounds like a strange mash up to draw girls and boys alike. Introducing Yukari Akiyama we find out she is a tank otaku early on in the story before we even meet the rest of her eventual team at school, Each member of her team has their own unique personality and skill set that helps them when they get their first chance in the magnificently drawn tanks which are a stark contrast art wise compared to much softer girls who use them. The mangaka Ryohichi Saitaniya does a great job mixing opposing art styles and is able to bring the emotional states for the girls to life through animated expressions as they learn the importance of team work, guts, and strategy in the field of combat and life (Or maybe I am just over thinking this because it is only the 1st volume and ends in a cliff hanger.)

My favorite part of the book is when generally sleepy and brilliant Mako Reizei steps in to drive the tank when Hana Isuzu faints after briefly skimming through the driving manual. Fight on girls. :)

I love the anime, but it really doesn't translate well to a comicbook format. Exaggerated reactions that would look cute in animation just look cringy here and battles look far less awesome without the movement being captured in animation. The adaptation tries to be a little different by shifting focus away from Miho and onto Yukari, this is a good decision but the book ultimately suffers for it because it just isn't able to compete with the world building as well as the story and character development in the anime. It is bad, the thing that will keep you invested and somewhat like it is being familiar with the anime. If you are not familiar with GuP at all, watch the anime, the manga will just leave you dissatisfied and confused.

What was I thinking?

I saw a sign for this manga and thought, why is this popular? Now that I have read it, I still have the same question. Tanks for nothing.

Before I get into my full fledged review, let me explain how I found this weird anime that I love very much. It was a typical afternoon, I was eating leftover Chinese food and decided that all the anime I was watching at the moment were boring and I wanted to watch a new one so, I entered Netflix and began scrolling. Then I saw it, girls und panzer, I was confused why's it spelt und and not and? What's a panzer? So I decided, I was gonna watch it. It took me a couple of months to finish since I was really not expecting an anime about... Tanks but I really enjoyed it actually. Then a week or two ago I was at the library looking for one last manga before I left and I saw it, I didn't know they made a manga but okay! So I picked it up and here we are now. Now let's get into the real review.

Reminder: I have only read volume 1 so my thoughts so far are limited. First of all, they totally changed the main character. In the series, Miho was the main character, the quiet new girl who becomes friends with cheerful Saori and delicate Hana quickly. But, in the manga, yukari, a tank loving nerd, is the main character. This seemingly changes the entire plot. In the anime, it's about Miho, the daughter of a family who is very important in the tankery world, is trying to be a normal girl after a bad experience in her last match, but, she later learns that tankery can be fun when doing it with your friends. But in the manga I see it going into a direction that's about Yukari finally living out her lifelong dream of operating a tank with her friends. They also cut out some characters back stories, for example reze only officially joining the club to get credit points since she's always so late and she wasn't there originally.

Anyways, 3 stars since I love the show, just the manga isn't my thing

Having fun aren’t they?

Miho was very experienced in tank warfare, but the rest of the students were new at this and ditzy at best in following a simple command. At least, their first match was a practice match. And the narrator knew very well this match is becoming a farce. For sure, they’ll learn their lesson soon enough.

1.5 rounded down

Very disappointing compared to the anime, it just feels like ¾ of the plot is missing. I don't understand the decision of changing the focus from the most interesting character, Miho, to Yukari either. Feels like a waste.

I thought the premise of this was cute and funny - to become an elegant woman be a tanker! Love it. Some of the language was strange and the plot was hard to follow at times since some of the drawings made it difficult to tell the different girls apart.

This is the Girls und Panzer manga based from the anime of the same title. If you haven't seen the anime I totally recommend watching it and it's available to stream on services like Crunchy Roll. If you think the idea of high school girls engaging in tournament tank combat is awesome and cute at the same time, then this manga/anime is something worth checking out.

One thing I appreciated about this manga adaptation is that it isn't just a regurgitation of the anime. The anime really follows the story of Miho as she searches for her own kind of tankery after having a division of philosophies with her family (the most well known tankery family). Instead this manga follows the perspective of Akiyama Yukari, she was the girl really into tanks from the anime. I liked this approach because I didn't feel like I was experiencing the same exact story again. They even include matches that are a not included in the anime and skip some of the matches that are, which I appreciated.

The only part where the manga sort of falls is where they try to keep the balance between the anime and the manga being the same. I feel like they had a golden opportunity to build Yukari's character and bring us into her world and love of tanks, but there is too little of that throughout the manga. By volume 4 we're pretty much following the final matches exactly with Yukari's commentary. While her commentary is a bit different, after four volumes she delivers the same sentiments a little too often. I would have preferred we delve into Yukari's world a bit more deeply and then this would have made the series feel a lot more different than the anime.

Even though the writers couldn't strike this balance perfectly, I still enjoyed the manga a lot. Perhaps it is merely my love of this world that let's me enjoy it so much, but I really liked it even if some of the experiences were nearly the same as the anime. In the end, if you liked the anime, I think you would like this as well. I actually hope they publish more stories from this universe as they seem to have quite an interesting world to draw from. They've already started doing this with "Little Army", which is a must read if you enjoy this series, in my opinion.

This is the story of a school club devoted to that most feminine of the womanly arts, tank warfare.

No, really, this is a story about a world where tank warfare is right up there with flower arrangement and tea ceremony as things any proper young lady should know. And there are competitive tank battles between schools. Oh, and did I mention that the main school is on a giant aircraft carrier?

Look, I don't care how stupid this sounds, you cannot deny the awesomeness of this.

The manga isn't bad, but I think I enjoyed the anime series more, at least so far. I'll admit the possibility that the manga could get better as it progresses, but it's not as focused on one character as the anime was, and sometimes it's not as easy to follow what's going on in the battle scenes.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Japanese schoolgirls participated in tank combat as an extracurricular school activity instead of tea ceremony, shogi, swimming, or literally any other non-lethal endeavor?

Have you?

Have you really?

REALLY?
