This. Was. So. Cute. I. Thought. I. Was. About. To. Die.
Seriously, I LOVED this one. At the same time, I have to say that reading BL novels brings with it a new kind of fear, namely when a story starts out great I keep worrying the author will end up ruining it - usually as soon as the sex starts. But I am happy to say apart from one tiny complaint this was pretty much perfect.
Saijyou Mamoru is a 27 year old salaryman who, ever since starting his job five years ago, has been avoiding romantic relationships because he wants to focus on his career. He often works overtime, and so usually every day at around 6 pm takes a break to get some coffee and a snack from a Starbucks-like-café near-by. One of the baristas is a somewhat sullen young man called Tachibana, who has been working at the café for about seven months. One evening, Tachibana suddenly approaches Saijyou, and that is the beginning of a beautiful complicated relationship, because the next day, Tachibana ends up confessing to Saijyou, telling him that he's always liked him. Saijyou at first doesn't exactly know what to do, so at first he pretends nothing has changed, but the two of them slowly grow closer.
The best thing about this book is probably that we get to read the story from both the uke AND the seme POV. The latter is so rare that so far I've encountered it only once, in a bonus chapter in a volume by the same publisher as this book's - usually it's always just the uke's POV.
The second great thing is that the relationship develops really really slowly. And since we get to see it from both their - very differing POVs - we get to experience that development from both sides, which was a novel and welcome thing.
Also, Tachibana is one amazing uke. Like Saijyou, I mistook him to be a lot more passive than he ended up being, and I really adored him and his somewhat weird faible for bears. (Not that kind of bear, I actually mean the teddy bear kind.)
Saijyou is really nice, although he does lack depth a little (something all too common in semes). I also appreciated him giving Tachibana all the time he needed, except maybe for the first time they have sex - but a) I mostly blame the fact that the author had to get one sex scene in some way or other and b) Tachibana was pretty much on board after initially being a bit surprised.
This is definitely a book I'm going to read again, and one that increased my love for Watarumi-sensei's works. (So far I liked all except one, and I think I've read five or six by her already.)
