Against the Wall #3

Straddling the Edge

Rate this book
Summer McGallian … the scandalous home wrecker from Against the Wall and Between The Sheets. The one who stole her co-worker’s fiancé, the other woman, the one people whisper about and stay away from. Only for Summer, things aren't always as they appear and she knows that better than anyone. She hasn’t been herself since she was in high school, when life was less complicated and relationships weren’t about making compromises to land the guy. When her heart is broken, there's only one thing left for her to do … prove she isn't who everyone thinks she is. And maybe, just maybe, she can get back to being comfortable in her own skin again, without input from a man. But when she encounters Sexy Guy, Dean Michaels, everything Summer has ever known about the opposite sex is about to change.

Dean Michaels knew he’d seen her somewhere before. What he never imagined was that the gorgeous woman in a baseball cap and hooded sweatshirt tossing back a beer in his favorite spot could be Summer McGallian—the woman who always looked like she’d stepped off the pages of a glamour magazine when he’d seen her from afar at work. And to make matters worse, she’s Chase Marino’s ex, the one guy who gets under his skin like no other. If the thought of being someone’s bitch in jail wasn’t enough to scare him, he would’ve strangled that bastard years ago and tossed the body in the Mojave Desert. But forget about Chase … Dean knew from the moment he saw Summer’s sexy smile and heard her cute laugh, she had to be his. And he won't let anything get in the way of that.

The Against The Wall series isn’t just about steamy sex scenes and swoon-worthy romance, but about new friendships, undying love, and a ton of laughter. Enjoy the ride as you get to know and love Summer and Dean, just as you did Shelly and Matt, and Melissa and Tyler, in the third book, Straddling The Edge.

I'm a mom, a wife, a teacher, a reader, and a writer. I'm also an lunatic when it comes to the NFL and playing Fantasy football, especially if I don't get my first pick quarterback: Tony Romo. When I'm not at home or work, you can probably catch me on the 15 freeway singing my heart out and dancing away in my car.

I was in doubt in reading this book, because I don't like Summer in previous books. But she won me over and I loved her story. Recommend the whole series.

Straddling the Edge is the third book in the series Against the Wall. Now, I started the first book (Against the Wall) but didn't quite have a chance to finish it before I got this one to review. What I did have time to gather from the first book was that Summer McGallian was a man-stealing slut!

However, in Straddling the Edge, we see a new side of Summer. Not only is it (FINALLY) summer for our teacher friends, but Summer herself is moving on to a new ""season"" in her life. She finally discovers what we readers figured out a long time ago--Chase is a jerk. Summer has come to terms with her relationship with Chase being over and the fact that really has no friends--especially at work, based on her ""reputation"".

Dean is a also a teacher at Carver High, however, Summer doesn't meet him at school. They meet unexpectedly at her favorite watering hole, but Summer does not warm up to him right away. Eventually, she finds out that they not only work together, but that Dean also went to Carver High with the rest of the ""gang"".

I really enjoyed this book. It was a sweet love story with some hotness sprinkled in! Being a teacher at my own alma mater, I can identify with many of the characters. I also loved that Prestsater referenced cool restaurants and places locally here in Southern California. I loved that Summer is a Dodger fan--pay no mind that Dean is a die-hard Angels fan--and she loves her local craft brewery! I think I know which one you mean, Ms. Prestsater. Many of us teachers frequent the same one!

Going back now to read #1 in this series and I just bought #2 for my Kindle. Happy reading!

I feel like I read this forever ago, and that is probably because I did. Perk of being friends with the author, you get an advanced read. That is also me telling you all that I am in fact friends with the author and it is only fair you all know that. Although it doesn't factor at all into what I'm about to say because this is 100% my opinion...Straddling the Edge was my favorite so far of the Against the Wall series and that says a lot because I hated Summer in the other books. Actually that says a lot of Julie as an author because she was able to transform Summer into not only a likeable person, but a relatable person which in return made me love this book.

Straddling the Edge is Summer's story. In the past books what we knew of Summer was that she was a home wrecker. She was the reason that Shelly and Chase were broken up. But what we didn't know was Summer's background. Now single and alone, Chase having once again cheated, Summer must figure out who she is and how to stand on her own. And with the hot and sexy Dean, who treats her better then anyone ever has, she may just be able to really be who she is and find true love in the process.

First I must say this...Dean is flipping hot! Man oh man oh man is he hot! Okay, shallow moment over. ;-)

What I really liked about this story was the growth of Summer who wasn't at all what she seemed like. Basically she was a girl like any other girl. She never fit in with anyone when she was younger and when she started to get attention from men after a make-over she ran with it. But she was never being herself and in the end that hurt her worse than anything because she was attracting the wrong kind of people. She ended up being prey in a way for guys that didn't want commitment, just a good time, and in the long run she got a reputation that she didn't deserve because of this. Once you removed the act, and the make-up and the Barbie like appearance, you got a down to earth girl that was just looking for love like we all are. And with the help of Dean, hot, sexy, down to earth Dean, Summer found you don't need a horse and pony show to find the right man, you just need to be yourself.

In true Julie fashion, Straddling is written with a realness of humor and emotion that has you cheering for everyone involved...well minus Chase who I still don't like. She gave us a story about real relationships with real people that didn't feel forced or out of place. It was paced well, timed well and written well. Bravo Ms. Prestsater. Can't wait for the final piece of the puzzle which I better get early. ;-)

Damn I love these books! After reading Against The Wall and Between the Sheets all I kept thinking was... I DO NOT want to read a story about Summer! She's a hoe and I hate her!!!

Guess, who loves Summer now....

ME!!!!!

I really had no clue who she really was, poor girl.... she was sooo misunderstood! I hated Summer just as much as Mel and Shel did, but now I'm really glad I took the time out to get to know her story. This was such a fun book! And Dean.... Well he's so romantic I spent half of the night swooning at damn near everything he said. I loved these two together, its such a good feeling to see a woman who has kissed a few frogs FINALLY find her Prince. I also loved seeing Shel and Mel again! Those girls are a hoot and them becoming mothers definitely did not make them boring.

Chase is still a douchebag.... Just when I think he there's no lower for him to get.... he sinks even lower! Julie, if you can make my feelings about Chase change I change in his book I will change my Facebook status to "Julie P is God!"

Everyone needs to read this series, it's fun and very entertaining!

I was lucky enough to get to read this early, so when it releases, I'll come back and post more of a recap. All I'll say now, is it's awesome!!!

Updated 4.28.13

Now that this is available for purchase, I can finally share my thoughts on this awesome book about Summer and Dean.

I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't a huge Summer fan in the last two books. She had stolen Shelly's fiancé, acted like she was better than everyone else and just generally had an air about her that made you want to go screaming in the opposite direction. She just wasn't nice. Well, this book completely changed my perspective on good old Summer and I think it taught a very important lesson along the way.

In Straddling the Edge, we get to know more about Summer's background, what makes her tick and about some of her insecurities that were pretty well hidden before. Bottom line, she's just like the rest of us and looks and actions can be deceiving.

When a chance encounter at a bar with one hot, sexy guy leads to instant lust for Summer (and enough fireworks for a 4th of July display), "Sexy Guy" is born and the story is off and running. Unexpected friendships are formed along the way in this book and ironic connections make it much easier for Summer to run into her "Sexy Guy", Dean Michaels again.

Over the course of the book we get taken on a journey of righting past wrongs, finding that you have to be who you are no matter what and of course the wonderful act of falling in love.

Once again, Julie Prestsater has woven together an incredible story that gives you all the highs and lows you hope for in a great book. Plus, who can argue with the uber hot leading man?! Certainly not me and I look forward to the next journey that Julie chooses to take us on!

First of all... What a HOT cover.
I really, really like it.

Now *cough**cough* about the book.
Summer has been portrayed in the previous books as a home wrecker and other stuff.
Instead she's just a normal-half insecure girl who only wants to be appreciated and loved for who she is.
Of course, Dick Dan strikes again and she is left heartbroken and tired of all.
She meets Dean Michaels, who she calls HOT but I call sweet and kind and perfect and dreamy. He makes her feel amazing even if they haven't known each-other neither for a month.
They fall in love and everything about their relationship puts a smile in my face.
Of course it was a little big too much sweet and the sugar levels in my blood grew dangerously but sometimes after a cliffwanker or a sadist or a mindfuck or just after a seriously frustrating book I might get back at this book and be reminded of the beauty in love at first sight.

So I have been a fan of this series right from the start and the books just seem to get better and better.

I never though I would like Summer as she just did not seem nice in the first 2 books...however Julie Prestater is such a good author that she made me like her from the beginning right till the end....that takes serious talent....

The story of Summer and Dean was beautifully told and I can honestly say I have a huge crush on Dean....I mean talk about a total romantic....YUM!!

Looking so forward to the next book where this talented author is going to have her work cut out for her as I mean who the hell would like Chase?? But if anyone can do it, she can!!!! Have to admit though when I followed the link at the end of the book and saw the cover model, I kinda started liking Chase just a little bit already....lol

Julie Prestsater does it again. Another awesome read. I think Dean now trumps Matt in the total sweethearts stakes! I love Summer now as well. I didn't like her in the first one, kinda felt sorry for her in the second one, and now I love her. She's such a down to earth girl and I love that she snorts!:)
Not sure how I feel about the not from Julie at the end that she's gonna write Chase's story. If there's one person who doesn't deserve a story it's him. But if anyone can make me change my mind about a Grade A a**hole it's Julie Prestsater. Can't wait for Playing Chase, I really hope he's put through the wringer!!!;)

Beautiful, light, sweet, romantic and FUNNY story!

This is the 3rd book in the Against the Wall series, and Ms Prestsater has not disappointed. I didn't think Matty (from book one Against the Wall) would ever be knocked off my No 1 Book Boyfriend pedestal, but um, sorry Matty...Dean totally wiped the floor with you! Dean is so sweet and romantic - oh, my!

And Summer! Well, somehow the woman we loved to hate from books 1 and 2 became lovable! So lovable you just can't bloody help but be happy for her for landing Dean.

Well played, Ms Prestsater, well played...

I love this series. It's so easy to read and love the characters. They crack me up. Everyone of the books in this series has me keeping a smile on my face. That alone is 5 star worthy. It's mushy, and cheesy at times but it works. If I could have a Dean in my life, I would be in heaven. I love how we knew nothing about Summer really and my whole mindset changed about her quickly. It's kind of like real life with her, believing the gossip without asking questions. I wish I had friends like these.

I stuggled with this one a little. It took me a while to get through it because I got really bored. In fact I almost gave it 2 stars but the ending was cute and I love the cover. Honestly it was way too mushy romantic for me. It needed some more drama! Shelly and Dean are sweet but were a little to lovey dovey for my taste. I was waiting for something to happen. Its nice for a couple to be this in love in real life but in a book I want something to keep me interested.

Eh, just okay for me. A little to sappy for my tastes, but still okay. Chase is a complete douche, and I was worried he was going to get violent. I think Shelly had him pegged perfectly, he may not want you, but he wants you to want him. I did like Summer and Dean...but like I said, too sappy. Also, the big secret Dean was hiding, was nothing, not even a blip on what could end a relationship so I thought that was pretty anticlimactic.

Loved it! Summer was truly amazing this time around. And I appreciate how Shel & Mel's characters stayed close to the forefront!

Summer & Dean had an amazing connection. The evolution that occurred, rather quickly, was well written and believable. From Summer's past relationship issues, to Dean's perfection as a man. It was hard not to fall in love with all of them!

I wasn't sure my opinion on Summer could be changed, but hell yes, it has now! Gone is the bitchy home wrecker and in her place is a great friendly woman.

Wasn’t originally going to keep going. Who likes Summer after the first two books? Poor thing was badly misunderstood and poorly treated by Chase, like Shelly.

This author really needs to do a better job with timeline. You don’t know if it is the next day, a week, a month, etc.

Also, where does Dean get his money????? There is no way he should be able to afford all those surprises on a teacher’s salary.

Slick's review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

5 Stars

I’m going to be honest, I was prepared not to like this book because I knew going in that I had issues with the heroine, Summer. I mean the witch stole Shelly’s fiancée, dresses like a floozy, and struts around the halls of Carver high like she owns the place. To top it off she is always rude to Melanie, whom I adore, and she puts up with the scumbag Chase. So, there was no love lost between me and Summer. I went into this book already determined to HATE the heroine, do you know how hard it is to read a book when you already have your mind set? Well, leave it to Julie Prestsater to not only change my mind but make me decide I want to be Summer’s friend especially if that means I can hang around with her and her amazing boyfriend, Dean. (Not to mention Shelly, Matty, Mel, and Ty.) This is one of those stories that proves you should never judge someone for what you see on the outside because you NEVER know what’s going on inside. The message here is to be yourself, people will either like you for who you are or they won’t and if they don’t, it’s their loss. You don’t need friends who don’t see the real you. From the first time Dean saw Summer, he saw the real her and he was immediately intrigued. Summer on the other hand felt instant lust and “Sexy Guy” was born.

I’ll just come out with it, when I’m wrong I say I’m wrong and I was wrong about Summer. There’s no doubt that her self confidence has been shattered by the jerkwads she’s dated in the past. I hate that she felt she had to “change” herself to be accepted. Unfortunately so many girls (and women) do this and I find it sad they feel they have to in order to fit in. I love that she reads romance and has a library full of books, that she’s a huge baseball fan (despite her lousy taste in teams), and that she’s most comfortable dressed down. I admire the fact that she was able to put aside the ugly and hurtful things Melissa had spewed at her in the past and confide in her and Shelly. She won me over completely when she apologizes to Shelly and explains the full story of how she and Chase got together. I find it endearing that she gets easy fluster around the opposite sex and that Dean really throws her for a loop.

I have no idea where to start with Dean other than to say I wish I could clone him for my single girlfriends. I really do. I love that he’s immediately protective of Summer without being creepy about it. That fact that he listens to her and files things away is amazing to me and shows how invested he is from the beginning. I love that he plans “surprises” for Summer and that he does things he knows she will love even if it isn’t something he would normally do. He does it to make her happy, how can you not love this guy? While he makes an error in judgment, I can kind of see why he does it and just the fact that he owns up to it and apologizes is huge.

From their first random encounter, there is no denying these two are going to need fire extinguishers nearby when they finally succumb to their desires. I like that they don’t jump into bed together immediately, they spend time getting to know each other, driving each other a little crazy, making out like teenagers so when they do finally give in…It is hot, it’s spectacular, and it’s real.

As much as I loved getting to know Summer and Dean and seeing their burgeoning relationship blossom, I can’t finish this review without mentioning the other characters. We spend a lot of time with Shelly and Matty from Against The Wall as well as Melanie and Ty from Between The Sheets. It’s a pleasure to see how marriage and parenthood has changed these couples and how despite that, they are still the fun loving people from the past books. I love that they are there for Summer and Dean when they need them. The offer advice, they give support, and they are a shoulder when they need one. In addition, we are treated to visits with both Summer and Dean’s parents and damn I laughed so hard when both of these couples put in an appearance. I don’t know what was funnier, the often inappropriate comments coming out of their mouths or the embarrassment they caused their adult children. Either way, they are the parents I strive to be!

As much as I loved the first two books in this series, Straddling The Edge really hit home with me. In addition to it being a sexy love story, I like the messages it sends out. Until you know someone and their situation, we truly have no right to judge. The other is be true to yourself because until you love the person you are, it’s hard for someone else to love you. I don’t want you to think that because of this Straddling The Edge is preachy, heavy reading, it’s not. I can guarantee this book will make you laugh until your sides ache, it will most likely have you spewing your drink onto your e-reader screen, it will make you cry, it will definitely make your remember falling in love, and most of all it will make you thankful for the true friends you have in your life. Julie, you’ve done it again and I can’t thank you enough for another fantastic story with a hero that is hard to beat!

3.5 Stars! Wow! I really thought there was no way in hell that Julie Prestsater could get me to like Summer McGallian. She was a fiancé-stealing skank and ice bitch for all I cared, but I wanted to give the book a chance and I'm so happy that I did!

Summary:
In Against the Wall and Between the Sheets, we learned that Summer McGallian stole her co-worker Shelly's fiancé. From the beginning we heard her called the other woman and whispers of all her scandalous sexual escapades. But Summer is well aware that things are not always as they seem. Having always been to,d she needed to be a different person, she hasn't been the real Summer since before college. When she'd rather be in comfy pants and a Dodger sweatshirt, instead she donned a little bit tighter and sexy clothes, caked on the makeup, and pretended she didn't care what other people thought. All of these compromises were to land her perfect guy, and she was convinced Chase was him. When Chase breaks her heart, she decides to take back what she let slip away. She is looking forward to getting back to the easy going Summer and being more comfortable with herself. While setting out to do this, she runs into Sexy Guy, Dean Michaels. Dean is the shop teacher at Carver High. When he runs into Summer at their favorite little family-owned brewery, he knows he's seen her somewhere before. Dean is definitely interested, but he isn't real happy that Summer is Chase Marino's ex, his worst enemy. After getting to know the real Summer a little better, he is determined to make Summer his, no matter that she dated the one man he'd like to strangle. Summer is hesitant. She's not real eager to have her heart shattered again, and she knows Dean would be worse than anything that she felt with Chase. He's sweet, thoughtful, and sexy as all get out. Not to mention that she has struck up a tentative friendship with Shelly and Melissa after explaining that she never knew Chase was still with Shelly. He told her they had broken up, and she still waited months to give in and date him. Her and Shelly also belong to an exclusive club of women cheated on by Chase Marino. Despite past differences, their friendships take off, and Summer's relationship with Dean sparks a passionate fire. Everything between them is perfect until Chase decides to crash back into Summer's life with lies of wanting her back and the real reason behind him and Dean's feud. Can Summer put aside her doubts and trust her heart to Dean or will she believe Chase and ruin her chance at the love of her life?

I loved Summer. She was actually a laid back and sweet person. More of a book worm than anything. She was just misunderstood, and she reminded me not to make snap judgements. Dean was dreamy. He adored Summer and really endeavored to show her how a woman should be treated. I love both of their parents. Lol. They cracked me up! Shelly and Melissa were just as hilarious, and I loved that they took Summer into their group. I'm hesitant to say I won't learn to love Chase, because I was so sure I wouldn't love Summer. Still, he is a horrible person and better have a damn good reason for hurting so many people. <3

This is the third book in the Against the Wall series and it was a sweet story. This story is about Summer, who we've met in the other two books. Let me start by saying that I really disliked Summer in the other books because she was portrayed as a high maintenance, boyfriend stealing, snob! I really didn't know how the author was going to persuade me to like her. But, once I read her story I ended up loving Summer and was happy to see her have her HEA! This book is a great lesson that you shouldn't judge people by rumors and perception alone.

This book is a great addition to the series and I enjoyed reading Summer's love story. The story didn't blow my mind but, I did find it enjoyable. That's why I gave it 3.5 stars and decided to round it off to 4 stars. I do love the Against the wall series and I am loyal to a fault :D
Looking forward to reading Chase's story! If Julie Prestsater can get me to love Summer, I can't wait to see how she gets me to change my mind about that scoundrel we call Chase :D
