Lieutenant Frank Hastings secures his weapon at airport security to greet his son upon his arrival in San Francisco. After a year apart, he finds Darrell to be typical of moody teenagers, hoping a fishing trip will strengthen their bond. Upon reaching Hastings's apartment, they discover a prowler had been snooping, but fled before police arrived. At their lakeside cabin, the watcher awaits, intent on vengeance against Hastings by threatening his son. To endure this trial, Hastings must trust Darrell beyond measure, and Darrell must rise to the occasion and become a man.
