When Dr. Alix Hendry purchases an old historic home in need of renovation, she had no idea how much her life is going to change. A divorced mother of two, she moves her teenage son and young daughter into a home known in the area as “Evenshade”. The home is one of the first built in Salem and has a dark history linked to the Salem Witch Trials, something that fascinated Alix. But that fascination soon grows to terror.
Enter Cord Trevor. A descendent of from one of the passengers on the “Mayflower” and also a descendent of Abigail Williams, one of the chief accusers in the Salem Witch Trials, Cord is a single father of three teenage boys and he immediately takes to his new neighbor, Alix. Handsome, hunky, he’s a firefighter with a family legacy rich in history and witchcraft. Unbeknownst to Alix, Cord is a powerful warlock, something he keeps deeply hidden and repressed. But the gift is there, lurking, and waiting to be called forth.
As Alix and Cord fall madly in love, the dark secrets of Evenshade began to rear their ugly head. Alix’s small daughter speaks of a ‘sad girl’, an imaginary companion they discover is not so imaginary. The ghostly girl who inhabits Evenshade is only the tip of the iceberg for an evil curse that soon threatens Alix and her children. Join Alix and Cord for a wild ghost story of horror, curses, passion, true love, and finally witchcraft, culminating in the ultimate battle for Evenshade – the ghostly occupants against those of flesh and blood.

The is a great story with a fantastic cast of characters. They are very well devolved and immensely likable. The main characters Cord and Alix fall deep in to love at first sight. She is a surgeon that has a sixteen year old son and a four year old daughter. Cord is a firefighter chief that has three sons age's fourteen-seventeen. Alix is Cord's new neighbor, and after they meet....well...let's just say the rest is history! Shortly after Alix moves in to her new house she begins to encounter some strange happenings, especially around her daughter...scary things....evil things.
The best part about this book is the ghost story. Don't get me wrong the love story is nice too, but the ghost part really draws you in and makes you become invested.
One thing that did irk me was when near the end when Alix wanted to leave the house right after being scared out of her mind. And it took her at least an hour for her get ready to leave! Ummmmm...Hello!?! If I was freaked out and scared for my family, I would have packed a couple a few things shoved them in a bag and hightailed it out of there with family in tow! See ya! Sayonara! Au revoir! So long suckers...Im outta here!!! Instead Alix takes a shower! I suppose it wouldn't have played out as well in the book, if she had left. lol ; ) But still...its just like in the horror movies when you start to yell at the girl on screen "No! You idiot don't run up the stairs!". HA!
This a great story, nice and spooky just in time for halloween! It has spooks, curses, and witches....everything that goes bump in the night! If you like this authors other book 'Purgatory' you will LOVE this one.
I really liked this, although I personally think there were too many topics/plots covered - it was almost like one of these miniseries, where something happened in each show, with an underlying theme. The theme here was an old curse, or rather curses affecting a mother and her two children newly moved into an old home, and especiall the little daughter, Rose. Good thing the firefighter neighbour does not only help with moving furniture, but also knows something about witchcraft... Good main plot, and well told, keeping a reader glued to the pages. Likeable protagonists, and - not sure if so intended by the author - but I even felt sorry for what haunted the house and the family living in it. I definitely will see if I can get more of this author.
0k, I am a kathryn le veque mega fan and also of Kat le Veques other series. I was NOT a fan of this! I don't do ghost stories and that is what this is. I got all off this series but if the rest are the same, I will return them unread.
I didn't know Kathryn wrote this type of genre. It was a great story that I read in 2 days!! Wow now what to read. This story left me on a high and need to find another!
This book following Alix and Cord is a suspenseful ride from start to finish. This fit spooky season perfectly and it's paranormal activity kept me turning the pages!
I really enjoyed reading this book. Great story line and a great history lesson. Can't wait to read another book written by this Author. I would highly recommend this Author to anyone who liked to read. Looking forward to starting another book.
I had a very different kind of review, but of course it disappears when you finger move the box upwards!!I have lost several reviews this way anyway four stars as the guy come off as a crybaby, to me there are a lot of tears in his story!
This was a very interesting read with some true historical facts from the Salem witch trials and I truly would have moved out of that house when all the strange things were happening. Great read continue with your great writing I’m truly enjoying it. Becky
I was scrolling through free e-books and thought this cover had witchy vibes plus I was intrigued not just by the Salem Witch Trial connection but that this had a horror leaning.
I liked that the house is a character with it's architecture and history.
The couple almost feel like fates mates and things do move fast: insta-lust, I love yous within 30% and a surprise pregnancy when Alix has 2 kids and Cord has 3. I suppose those who enjoy a big family would like this. I thought both of them were rather dramatic towards the middle when there was some tension between their children and them being together: running around, crying, following each other. It was abit much.
Cord Trever, the local fire fighter captain and descendant of one of the original Pilgrims on the Mayflower, is out walking his dogs one morning when he hears a yelp, following the noise, he lifts a heavy cabinet, and finds the beautiful, petite, Dr. Alix Hendry with whom he becomes immediately smitten with. Alix in turn, falls for the handsome, huge man with the winning smile. But true love's path is not always easy, especially as Alix has just moved in to a beautiful old house with a dark and deadly history. Will they have their happy ending, will they survive this deadly ordeal... Only time will tell. As usual, Kat Le Veque does not fail to bring something grippingly entertaining to the table. Not only are Alix and Cord an engaging and delightful couple, but throw in Alix's son Sean and little daughter Rosie, not to mention Cord's sons, Kyle, Chris and Cole, and a mix of wonderfully entertaining life follows through this captivating story. All these characters add to the story, which is both atmospheric and scary. This book is a real page turner, a terrific read from start to finish, especially with all the twists and turns that are included in this story. I absolutely loved it!
This is the perfect mixture of a contemporary romance and a ghost story. The two main characters meet when she's moving into a house that is centuries old. They have a windfall romance and quickly fall in love but have some problems due to their children. You'll have to read the book to find out if they end up together.
The second half of the book is centered around an old legend dating back to the Salem Witch Trials. There's a little girl ghost who appears to Axil's 5 year old daughter telling her stories and singing age-old chants. Digging into the history of the property brings many stories and theories. There's a few twists along the way, so I'll stop here.
It's a perfect book to read during this Halloween season..... sort of brings Hocus Pocus to life. Ha ha ha I enjoyed this read.
Excellent story that had me hooked from the first page. The writing style is so different from LeVeque's medieval stories that I had a hard time believing she wrote this, but I liked it enough to look up her other contemporary stories. Only negative is the medical inaccuracy: trauma surgeons would not care for patients with concussions or perform orthopedic/spinal surgeries, those are different specialties.
Very well written! There were several times while reading this that I was a nervous wreck. You know it's good when your gut is clenched from anxiety and you have to remind yourself it's only a book!
Starts off sort of slow, but when it picks up it is terrific. As always Le Veque delivers entertainment, excitement, and adventure enough to make me do a happy dance. Thank you for a grand read.
This story was more of a love story with a little bit of ghost thrown in until the end where it really picked up with the ghost story. All in all 3.5 stars.
