Pounding The Pavement

Rate this book
How much can one woman endure before she is fed up and realize it’s time to walk away? For Kandi it was years of mental, physical and sexual abuse. Hospital stays, beatings and being raped repeatedly. 23 year old Kandi has lived, saw it and survived it all. While most young girls were at school learning colors and shapes, Kandi was home schooled learning the gift of gab, the art of pleasure and how her body was a money making enterprise.

Kandi has escaped the life she was born into, but on a quest to rid the anguish that still resides inside. She has to uncover wounds that haven’t healed well, and relive every vivid detail of her crazy past. She digs deep, holds nothing back, and takes you on every trick she has turned and every beating she has received. She takes you on a journey through her eyes of the gritty streets of Compton, and what life was for her, when she was known as Kandiland.

I didn’t choose this life, this life chose me. I am the offspring of a Madam and a Pimp.

This book was really interesting to say the least. When you think you have been through, it's someone else who has been through worst than you. But thank God that He is a forgiving God and His grace and mercy endure forever amen!!!

Gritty, Good and Could be a Bit Better

This is a book depicting something I couldn't understand in a million years-life on the street. It's a story of one woman's (she's just a girl really) struggle to get out of the life of prostitution she was born into.

Kandi is the product of a Pimp and a Madam, she and her twin brother are being groomed from a young age to take over the "family business", this means Kandi will learn to be a hoe while Kris will learn to be a pimp. Evan as children, they lived in conditions that are absolutely unspeakable and actually hard to read about at times.

Finally at the age of 15 Kris escaped the hell that was his home life leaving Kandi to bear the brunt of it. She was then turned out into the streets and officially started working. This went on for years until Kandi broke free of her so-called parents and right into the nasty hands of Blaque (loved that name) and his brother Moe. Blaque was another big-time pimp that used and abused Kandi. This girl endured so much in her young life it was hard to imagine her not ending at her own hands.

Kandi was a popular hooker and everybody knew her, even the crooked cops of Compton. So with no family and no law to protect her, Kandi did what she had to do to survive. She was constantly being smacked around and attacked by those she should be able to trust. Eventually fed up, Kandi starts to hatch a plan, getting off of the streets and into a normal life was her goal. Sorry to be vague, I don't to spoil the story line of the book

I was proud to see that Kandi wanted a life away from the hell she knew. After all that has happened to her, she still held out hope there was something better waiting for her.

I said the book could be better and that is due to its lack of editing. Yes the book is written in slang, but there are some words like pelvis that is spelled pelvic and a few minor things that trip up a reader. Otherwise the story seems original and is written in such great detail you start to have feelings towards the characters. I am glad I gave this book a chance, it was well worth it.

Different

This is a five star book period. There is nothing to dislike about this book and trust me I have been reading books since, I was two years old!!!! I would recommend this book because Kandi could be someone's mother, daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter or anyone for that matter. Kandi went through a lot and still became beautiful!!!

Who would have thought

I can't believe that a couple would have children to carry on the family business of pimping and prostitution. A pimp and madam, who waited until the of twelve to have their daughter virginity taken and son learn to be a pimp. Them twins went so much suffering and I was happy her brother came back for her.

gripping

Once again, Nisha delivers a gripping story that you must finish once you start. I'm glad Tulsa got what was coming to him and unfortunately big and madam. They got their just due, but sad it had to come at the hands of their daughter.
