Back in high school, a cruel “game” by the popular crowd left shy Kennedy Bailey pregnant and alone. But now she’s gorgeous and grown-up and she won’t let anything stop her from saving the life of her five-year-old son when he’s diagnosed with leukemia. Even if it means confronting his father, NFL quarterback Ryan Carville.

As her child’s health takes a turn for the worse, Kennedy feels helpless and resolves to pull off a daring scheme—seducing Ryan to create another baby to save the one they already have. They reconnect for a steamy one-night stand, but Ryan can’t forget about the dark beauty.

When he discovers the truth of who she is, Ryan is shocked and determined to give his son everything he needs, which includes marrying his mother. But a quickie wedding in Vegas won’t solve all their problems. Can Ryan show Kennedy that he’s changed from a spineless boy to a man worth loving?

I received an advanced copy of The Rebel's Own from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The premise of this book was a promising one. Awkward, unpopular and troubled girl is approached by the most athletic, popular and handsome boy in high school. She's surprised that he's paying attention to her and agrees to go to the Prom with him. Problem is,she's his "Senior Sacrifice." This is a prank in which the popular jock finds the ugliest, strange or most unusual virginal girl on campus and has sex with her. They do the do and our "hero" moves on to his promising life as a football star. Poor Kennedy (the heroine) is left pregnant, heartbroken and embarrassed when she discovers the prank was on her. Fast forward to the future, Kennedy has a very sick boy on her hands and no insurance to speak of. Time to go to daddy who is rich and famous. It's here that my biggest problems arise with this story.

What I Didn't Like: Kennedy makes a stupid decision - instead of just telling Ryan like it is and asking him to do the responsible thing, she decides on a course of action that was an idiotic gamble and that could have cost her child his life if it failed. I wish she had just told him like it was and made him do the right thing. But nooo... game playing ensues. But, I can even kinda forgive this and say Kennedy was just too traumatized about what happened to her (six years ago) to just ask for or demand his help. What I can't forgive is the completely uninspired way in which Ryan falls for Kennedy. It didn't make sense. He didn't recognize who she was, and it wasn't like he loved her or even sought her out after that fateful fuc*k in the back seat of his car. But suddenly, after one flirty conversation he's thinking she might be good for him. After several fu*ks (sorry this wasn't lovemaking or anything of the sort, it was just fuc*k'n) and then discovering that she's the girl he hit and quit in high school, he's in love. Didn't buy it. Also, nothing seemed fully formed or quite finished for me. I expected more trouble from his ex-girlfriend. She was certainly leading up to it... but fizzle. The didn't further the story along for me or serve any real purpose. By that point everything had more or less resolved itself except for her mother's feelings about him. Speaking of...that was a fizzle too.

What I Did Like: Yes I did like something in this book other than the initial promising story-line. Ryan caring for his sick son was touching to me. That did feel real and genuine. The little boy was cute and the sadness and fear from Kennedy was well done and touched my heart.

The Bottom Line: I wanted to like this book. I really did and at the beginning I had such hope. Unfortunately it just fell flat. I really wish that more authors would take their time and write a longer and more fleshed out story-line. I'm giving this one two and a half stars. The sick child angle was touching and the elements of a good story were all in place - unfortunately it just didn't make it.

The Rebel's Own had so much potential. It sounded like a really awesome tear jerking book, but it was a complete fail.
First, it moved way to fast. One minute Ryan is trying to woo or should I say manipulate Kennedy into a...I guess a fake relationship (???) so he can take her to prom. Then BAM(!) it's prom night and before Kennedy can even stepfoot into the school gym, after she ran three blocks I might add (gross, talk about 'gina sweat), Ryan takes her to the back of his car and practically rapes Kennedy. I mean she just lays there and lets him take advantage of her and coincidentally orgasms with him, even though I am more than positive she has never had sex before, and this backseat love fest was more of a quicky. Now jump five years later and one morning her son is perfectly fine the next BAM(!)he is suddenly deathly ill. One minute Kennedy loaths Ryan the next she is head over heels for him, even though he practically raped her five years ago he is suddenly forgiven.
Secondly,I hated how Matt and Ryan were both complete jerks in high school but for some reason five years has completely changed who they are as a person. That doesn't add up in my book. YOu can't be absolute low lives in high school, and not face any of the consequences for their actions (except for five years later) and come out decent guys. Heck to the naw!
The Rebel's Own made no sense and just wasn't belieable. If only it was more believable then damn I would have loved this book.

This is a story of a teenage girl, Kennedy who tried to be invisible to her classmates because she was poor and ashamed of how she had to live. She didn't think that she was particularly beautiful either. You have the high school star quarterback paying attention to her for all the wrong reasons. He was trying to fit into the popular crowd who expected the football team to prey on the unsuspecting ugly ducklings, or the girls who otherwise wouldn't be given the time of day. The ultimate score is if these girls are virgins, they carry the highest bragging rights. Ryan asks Kennedy out to prom hoping that she will say no, but of course that didn't happen. (I had a flashback of the movie Pretty in Pink with Molly Ringwald for a moment.) Kennedy shows up to the prom looking beautiful and Ryan didn't even talk to her. He just hit and quit it, literally and drove her right on home. Kennedy fantasized about Ryan and a happily ever after, from the time he asked her to prom, up until she received the best present from him that she could get and he never knew since he graduated that spring. Fast forward 6 years and you have a bitter Kennedy and mother (can't blame them) that needed to contact Ryan because of medical issues for her son.

I thought this was a good story. The story had a good premise but I wish it had been a little longer to develop the relationship of Ryan and Kennedy when they were grown ups. In the beginning, when Kennedy and Ryan were in high school together I could see how she could get wrapped up in a boy so fast since teenage hormones are all over the place, but for Ryan to form such a fast attachment to Kennedy when they were grown, I wish that had been explored more. Ryan didn't have the slightest clue as to who Kennedy was when she was reintroduced into his life. At first I thought this kind of odd, but since he really was trying to forget his past and what he did to those girls, I guess I could see Ryan's high school memories being blocked since those weren't his most fond memories. Still, I thought it was a good night delight.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

I was given this book for an honest review. I loved the premise behind the book. Regretfully, I didn't like it. There were a few times where I was left going HUH? Like the cobbler offered to buy her a pair of shoes? She couldn't afford new shoes so how is she paying to get her old ones fixed? Also, how did they know she was a virgin? I understand they did a "background" check. I get that they found out she was a loner, but a virgin? Also, it felt rushed but it was only 79 pages so I can understand that and get past it.

What I couldn't get past is the fact that I didn't like the characters. Ryan, Matt and Clara were disgusting for the whole Unites Tastes games. And despite his real feelings about the game, Ryan participated so there was nothing he could do to redeem himself in my eyes.

And Kennedy... She was an idiot. Seriously. The popular boy, who never talked to you before, suddenly starts getting friendly. Why wasn't she even slightly suspicious? Instead of wondering what he was up to, and she really should have, what does she do? She steals her dad's medicine money and buys shoes, a dress and rents a prom dress then dreams about the good life she would have with Ryan. Ugh. By the end I was so turned off by both Kennedy and Ryan that I couldn’t bring myself to care about their son or how their story ended.

I must confess, I really thought this book was going to make me hate because it was for young readers. But I was wrong. What a great book. From the beginning to the end. Had my nerves, going hay wire. Kudos to the author.

Very Good Read!

I really like this author....she is a very good storyteller. As with all of her books I've read, I have never been disappointed in her plots, her ability to flesh out a story, her character building; the full on gravitational pull of the stories she tells as a whole! And this one is no different!

Ryan and Kennedy's story does take you back to all of the things you loathe and loved about High School....and how infatuation, angst and hurt of teenagers can and often do flow into and shape your adult life....those experiences definitely guided this story! Good and Bad!

I don't want to spoil it; but know that it was a good read and I definitely recommend it....along with her others!

Games that children play

Ryan didn’t what to be involved in ‘United Taste’ in High School, but he went along with it anyway. Not knowing the destruction he would leave behind. Kennedy is desperate to save her son Riley, even if it means hunting down his father and sleeping with him again to have another baby. While I thought that was the dumbest idea ever. I don’t understand why she didn’t just tell the Ryan about Riley in the first place. They may have ended up in the same place anyway.

I liked the story, but Kennedy made a lot of decision and all roads would have eventually lead to Ryan. The author needs a proofreader to help tighten up the grammatical errors in this story not to mention the words that were missing.

When I read the premise of the book I was curious. Unfortunately that was the high point for me. The book was a mess of ideas. I felt that the author had too many situations happening at once and couldn't give a satisfying resolution to any of them.
It's a shame to have a good idea like this one so thoroughly wasted.

Not an alpha man.

I tried really hard to like this book, but it was just not happening. Ryan is a weak man and Kennedy is so passive. If you want a book with strong characters, don't buy this book, if you want well developed characters, don't buy this book, if you want an Alpha male, please don't buy this book. If you are ok with not getting that, have at it.

2nd Time Around

This is my second time reading, loved it the 1st time. And I loved it this time, I like this warm fuzzy feelings when I read a good book. Or even thinking 🤔 wow I wish I had a man like that, I would definitely get my freak on. The ending really had me smiling, love conquers all.

This was too much, but not enough at the same time. This could've been much better... the characters were weird. Their interaction was strange. It was just all too much, but missed the boat altogether.

Good enjoyable book 📖 to read 📚. That really was messed up what Ryan did to her just fit in. Kennedy never should have tried to trick him but I understand why she thought that was for the best at the time. Clara was a mess I'm glad Ryan cut her crazy self off.

At only 79 pages this really is a short novel – so it tried to get to the bones of the story fairly sharpish, I felt it could have been fleshed out a bit more as it seemed a little rushed.
The story is really romance in reverse. High School star footballer Ryan Carville partakes in the cruellest of games when he undertakes to participate in the “United Tastes” game – a truly abhorrent idea if ever there was one. But with nothing fuelling him but his desire to remain part of the team and to keep his maleficent cheerleader girlfriend Clara with him he agrees , no matter that he find the concept difficult to stomach.
The shame of this is that even in today’s society this mentality is still all too prevalent.
Goaded into taking the most appropriate girl for the game to the prom. Ryan’s truly distasteful girlfriend Clara, selects Kennedy Bailey, the mousy, loner to be his victim.
Kennedy Bailey really is a loner, she has no-one, she keeps herself very much to herself – shunning classmates and all other interaction. She lives by the understanding that if she stays out of the limelight no-one will ask questions. The last thing she needs is for the popular crowd to make her a target.
Socially inept, Kennedy is blown away when Ryan asks her to be his date to the prom. Craving the attention that having someone like the football star interested in her, she foolishly agrees to accompany him. Little does she know that he world is about to fall apart.
Attending the prom, Kennedy is unceremoniously deflowered (and secretly filmed) on the back seat of the car and immediately driven home – confused and alone.
The light in Kennedy’s life has just been extinguished, her happy ever after just walked away.
Alone and humiliated, Kennedy faces the shame of that night but carries with her a secret of her own – she is pregnant with Ryan’s child.
Fast forward 6 years and Kennedy is facing every parent’s nightmare – Riley has Leukaemia. Options are limited but she knows that in one way or another she will have to contact Ryan, as much as she doesn’t want him to be part of her son’s life, he just might be able to save him.
Up to this point I got the premise of the story and while it was flat in places it had potential. I didn’t understand it when Kennedy decided to try and get pregnant by Ryan in order that cells from another child may be able to save her son. What parent would do that – he could be dead in 9 months!
I also didn’t get it when Ryan first met Kennedy again, surely he might have had a slight inkling of recognition but nothing at all was a little farfetched, considering he hated what he had done to her.
The story gathered a pace when the link between the two of them came apparent and to his credit Ryan never shirked his responsibility to Riley. In fact his relationship with his son was one of the most endearing factors of the book. Father and son develop a fabulous bond.
The speed with which Kennedy agreed to marry Ryan and change both her and Riley’s life was staggering but then again in a story this short timelines were never going to be of any length.
Overall, the story is short and sweet in places but dated and destructive in others.
I liked both characters at times and loathed them at others but together they try to make the best of the situation for the benefit of their son.
Secondary characters are few and far between, Ryan’s best friend from school Matt is now his manager and while he initially gives the impression of being a bit of an idiot, he actually comes through for Kennedy and isn’t as bad as he first appears. The same cannot be said for the loathsome Clara, still on the scene after all these years – Ryan is very much her meal ticket, but losing him is one that she is not taking lightly. Shame for her that Kennedy has found her teeth and is willing to fight back this time.
In summary, I read and enjoyed the book but would have definitely been more enamoured with it is it had been a little longer and the characters and situation a little more in-depth.

In The Rebels’ Own by M.O. Kenyan, Kennedy Bailey was used in a cruel game by the popular crowd in high school, which left her pregnant and alone at a very young and vulnerable age. She already had a hard life at home as it was, now she would only disappoint them but she would have a tough life ahead. Which lead her to making a decision that if she had succeeded would have been the biggest sin and mistake of her life.

Now Kennedy lives with her mother and her five-year-old son, and lives to bring happiness to his life. But when her son is diagnosed with leukemia Kennedy is confronted with the biggest decision of her life. She needs a bone marrow donor for her son, but she is not compatible, her best options would be the father of her child or the mother cells from an umbilical cord from a sibling. Otherwise the wait to find a donor could mean life or death for her child.

Ryan Carville is an NFL quarterback, and the father of Kennedy’s child. Ryan is famous now and has the life his father pushed him to have, but he still has one regret, giving in to peer pressure from the popular crowd and using Kennedy the way eh did back in school. Which is why after graduating he left home for college and didn’t return.

As her son’s health gets worst, Kennedy decides to pull the biggest stunt of her life. She will use Ryan’s manager and best friend to arrange her meeting Ryan again, with the threat of revealing what they did to her in high school if he doesn’t help. She will seduce Ryan and get pregnant and have another child to give her son a chance at life.

But one night with Ryan may not be enough, and she soon realizes that she needs to talk to him. But instead of talking they end up having a second night together without the truth coming out. Until a photograph of him and Kennedy in the elevator and then another of his friend giving her a check will make secrets be revealed.

To say that Ryan is surprised is little, but he will give his son everything he needs, the bone marrow, the money for his treatment and including marrying his mother. But a quick wedding done by Elvis in Vegas will not be enough if their marriage and family is to have a chance at true happiness.

To make matters worst, Ryan’s high school girlfriend who pushed them all to do all the horrible things they did, and the woman he kept dating for the past five years does not want to let go of his money. And she will do her best to destroy his marriage and get Ryan back. Then there is Kennedy’s mom, who hates Ryan for what he did and cannot hide her feelings towards him.

But the biggest challenge for Ryan and Kennedy will be accepting that what the connection they felt in high school and what they feel now is more than just a passing attraction. They are building a family and have a chance at true happiness, but an accident will bring perspective to their feelings and what they really want. The only chance they will have is to have faith, love and strength to stick together until all gets better.

If you want a truly emotional and deep read, don’t miss The Rebels’ Own by M.O. Kenyan.

1 stars.

This had the potential to be a great book had it been 250, 300 pages long. A plot like this needs fully fleshing out.

Because everything was happening so fast, nothing felt deserved. The “I love you”, the “I’m sorry”, the “I forgive you”. The anger always felt displaced and over the top.

I ended up not caring for the characters halfway through the book.

Also, to change Riley to RJ that acceptingly felt off. RJ could have been a nickname since his middle name was already Ryan.

And, none of the characters were likeable. It was really hard to back anyone here, even the grandmothers.

Ryan Carville, star football player of Charleston High didn’t want to be a part of the United Tastes game. However, being a part of the team and keeping Clara the head cheerleader as his girlfriend were more important to him, even though this game left a sour taste in his mouth. He had to choose the ugliest or homeliest girl, invite her to the prom and take her virginity. She would be his prom sacrifice, and she would be the girl Clara picked out for him, and if he went along with her choice Clara promised to reward him.

Kennedy Bailey was a loner, she stayed by herself and did not interact with her classmates. She was afraid that they would find out she shopped at the Salvation Army, and that they would mock her. So she was very surprised when Ryan Carville came up to her and sat at her table. She was even more surprised when he asked her out and then invited her to the prom. She didn’t know about their game, all she knew was Ryan Carville asked her to be his date for the prom. She didn’t know she would be his prom sacrifice.

This was my first time reading a story by this author, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the characters and the interaction between them. I also liked how the author humanized Ryan. Even though he participated in this game, she allowed you to see that he wasn’t a bad person, just a person trying to live up to the expectations of others. You could see the chemistry between Ryan and Kennedy, and when he found out that he left her with more than a broken heart the night of the prom, he was surprised.

Matt, his best friend in high school and now his manager, at first came across as a jerk, but you soon saw that he wasn’t as bad as he appeared. The same can be said about Kennedy’s mom. The Rebel’s Own is a good book and one that I would recommend, and I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

"The Rebel's Own" is one of those books that, once you read the synopsis, you feel has potential. Sadly, it didn't reach that perceived potential. :(

The idea of having a guy who knowingly did something that scarred a girl's high school life and how they meet up again years later wasn't just interesting but one that could have been pursued in a variety of ways. Instead, I ended up not having too much empathy for the lead female character, Kennedy Bailey, who spent most of her high school life hiding from everyone around her only to begin acting like a lovesick girl the minute the star quarterback pays attention to her and then discovers that she was nothing more than a pawn in some sick high school game and was left with a souvenir of sorts (i.e. a baby). Then, you have her years later, making really illogical choices that only made sense to her.

On the other hand, you have Ryan Carville, someone who is supposedly actually a nice guy with somewhat of a conscience but not enough of one to turn his back on his idiot friends and girlfriend in high school. The label "rebel" doesn't fit him either because he simply went along with whatever was expected of him. Sheesh. Yes, once he found out about his son and the situation he was in, he did the right thing but his feelings for Kennedy didn't seem real because they didn't really have that chemistry.

This is a quick read and it did have a few good moments. If you're more open to certain situations being plausible then you'll probably enjoy "The Rebel's Own". I'm giving it 2.5 stars out of five, rounding it off to three stars for GR's purposes.

Though I was very mad at the hero fro what he did to the heroine in high school, well, disgusted actually, I hated him. He destroyed her life and went on his merry way not caring about the havoc he left behind. I agreed with her about not telling him about the baby, he was not worthy to be a father.

Saying that, this was still a great read, another author who used emotions instead of physical or sexual explicit words to express how they felt. I was able to connect with the people with this story and even cared about them. The hero truly seemed remorseful, but what I couldn't understand is why he stayed with that other girl for so long, why he allowed her to run his life. He should of been thrown her to the curve. That's a mystery I can't understand.

I still enjoyed this book, there was no sexually explicit or insulting actions, which I truly appreciate and the emotions of the characters felt real, it truly carried the book. There was truly a story here, that's why I'm giving 5 stars.

Thank you Miss Kenyan:)

Interesting premise

I decided to read this based upon the description. I have read books with similar story lines and enjoyed them. Unfortunately, this author needs to seriously work on story crafting and character building. It reads like a very problematic, first attempt at writing. I applaud the author for being able to at least, get a story from her head to the paper, which is more than many would be authors can manage. But the dialogue is very pedestrian. The story jumps clunkily, and a bit illogically,. There is no character development and most of their actions and words make them sound like idiots, as well there is a lot of telling vs. showing a classic faux pas. I recommend the author keep working on her craft.

When I first got this book to review I was intrigued with the premise and had high hopes for this book. Sadly the story did not meet expectations. There were parts of this story that really touched my heart but others that left me shaking my head. The characters were well developed and I fell in love with Riley. At times I feel like the story was rushed and other parts did not develop. Overall it was good but not great. I do feel however, this author has great potential and I will read more of her work.

4.00 stars. The overview of the story was a draw; but, in some ways, the execution was a bit of a let down. The characters were well developed and their personalities shown. The flip side was the pace of many of the events: not enough interaction between Ryan and Kennedy before she looses her virginity to him and falls in love him, no one would change so much in five or six years as to render them unrecognizable-barring plastic surgery add to that a choppy transition from one time interval to the next. I was happy that Ryan chose Kennedy over the self-serving Clara and that Riley got better and that Kennedy forgave Ryan for the "game".

This was a new author for me and I must say I rather enjoyed this book. The high school jock does something unsavory to a girl who nobody noticed in high school and leaves behind a piece of himself literally. 6 years later they meet back up but the ugly duckling has turned into a swan. who knew? Isn't that how it always happens? Now, he has to try to get back into her good graces so it was refreshing to see that he was not beneath apologizing for his error in his ways. He was the best hero ever I love him. This book was about forgiveness and new rekindled love and I thought it was cute.

For the Love of Your Child

I really didn't know if Kennedy would forgive Ryan for the joke that was played on her during their high school years even though telling him her secret would save their five year old son. Sometimes you must bite the bullet when it comes to your children's lives and your pride and knowing deep down that you truly love that person. The feeling was mutual. I did enjoy the story.

An Interesting Turn Of Events...

I enjoyed the story even though I did not care for how it was formatted and despite the morality of the characters.  It all ended happily.  I am happy that Ryan did not end up with Clara and Kennedy was able to move on from what happened in highschool so that she can have her family.

This is the first book that I have read from this author and am curious to see what else is there.

Awesome book!

It was different sroryline. But I really enjoyed it. It was very interesting and entertaining. I could not put it down. Loved the chemistry between Kennedy and Ryan! Clara need a beat down but glad she did not get the man, because she was a true gold digger. Kennedy's mom was a bitter woman, so glad she got it together. This was a very good book that I truly recommend.

This story has the potential to be a great novel. The premise was a bit unbelievable on how they fall in love so quickly. There were so many different avenues Kennedy could have taken but she chose the most selfish. When she found out her son was sick she decides to blackmail Matt about their sordid past and how did Ryan not recognize her?

Good

This was a good story but the structure, spacing and grammar needs work. It needs to be proof read again and this would help it immensely. I enjoyed how Ken didn't give into Ryan too quickly like in most romance books. Its always refreshing to see that. It would have been nice if the author had focused some more on the trauma caused by Ryan.

Great Story!!!

"The Rebel's Own" was a great read. If only it had been longer! Kennedy and Ryan's story started in high school, both wanting to fit in but Ryan took it too far. As a result, Kennedy was heartbroken, alone and pregnant. Fast forward five years. Kennedy's son is dying and Ryan is her son's only hope...
