Django: The Small Dog with the Big Heart

Rate this book
A small dog with a big heart, Django was named after a hero of the Wild West when as a six-week-old pup he taught the local bully a lesson. After a narrow escape from the life of a pampered lapdog, as safari operator Peter Comley’s faithful companion he had the Okavango Delta at his feet, though he was equally happy to view life from a seat at the bar of the Duck Inn.

Django travelled southern Africa’s wildest and most picturesque areas, nose to the ground, head out of the car window, or sometimes tactfully concealed from head to tail in the handbag of Peter’s wife Salome. To this pint-sized but charismatic character elephants were equals: his courage and understanding of the wild saved the lives of a number of his human companions, sometimes more than once.

Django is an entertaining safari from Botswana to Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, crossing the Okavango Delta, going hunting with Kalahari Bushmen, and exploring the Namib Desert, Victoria Falls and the wilds of the Zambezi.

Ever since Jock of the Bushveld was first published, stories about man’s best friend in the wild have entranced and entertained both locals and international visitors alike. Django promises to do the same.

Peter Comley’s thirty years as a professional guide has led to many humorous and sometimes startlingly perilous incidents in some of the remotest places in Africa. Acknowledged as one of the Dark Continent’s leading guides, Peter, when he is not leading safaris, can generally be found in one or other secluded paradise, writing books and articles on travel and wildlife.

I am surprised the vet got out unscathed… if it were me, he’d probably would suffer the same fate..

The stare that Skye started as a baby, is a daily occurrence I receive when I start talking my nonsense (yes, she is my partner).

Knowing Peter his voice has been narrating this book to me, making it even more entertaining.

Just finished wiping away the tears. Loved it - the book, the writing, the dog. Peter's Botswana came alive again for me to remember the way it was when I also frequented the Duck Inn. A magnificent book indeed.

Django was a Lhasa Apso - perhaps not the commonest dog breed in southern Africa! Safari Guide Comley, and wife Salome, get Django as a pup and he goes everywhere with them, in trucks, choppers, planes, ferries and on foot/paw - you name it. Comley was based in Maun, but traveled widely through Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. There are tales of the bush, wild animals, tourists, locals, travels, adventures; tall tales and colourful characters. A great read.

If you are an animal lover this is a must read. Wonderful dog who is more human than many human beings are. Up there with jock if the bush veld. Huge admiration for Simone, brave lady to be able to carry out what she does on their adventures. Had to cry at the end. Untimely departure not befitting the stature of the little guy.

This was a gorgeous book written with such love you could feel it on every page. A love of family, friends, Botswana and a dog. I enjoyed the adventure stories and Peters unpretentious style of writing. No preaching, romanticism or saccharine involved in this account of life up north. I now have an overwhelming desire to head off on safari loaded up with some of Peter Comleys travel books.

Good book. Loved all the adventures.

I think I would have strangled that vet. He was probably in it for money not love of animals and clearly did not understand the relationship between owner and dog.
