This is the history of Iordanus, the father of William Cullen and the patriarch of the Cullen clan. It is a history that stretches back to the early years of the fourteenth century in Verona, Italy, when Iordanus' youthful mother, Adreanna, was a teenaged domestic servant for the Clemenzas and she and Iordanus were two against the world. Iordanus never knew his biological father or anyone else in his immediate his maternal grandparents died before he was born and his aunt and mother became separated upon entering the big city and lost contact with one another.

As a young woman, Iordanus' mother worked harder than she should have and was taken advantage of at every turn by the Clemenzas. Seeing his mother worked to the point of exhaustion, day after day, seeing her struggles, Iordanus tried to help by using his spare time to hustle for money on the bustling and dangerous streets of Verona. Children disappeared all the time in the Verona of Iordanus' youth but Iordanus was one of the lucky ones who survived.

After spending time on the street, and then spending a fitful period as a stone-cutter, the young Iordanus turned to a life in the armed forces, serving under Cangrande 1 Della Scala. He earned the hatred of his superiors for his sharp tongue and bursts of temper and never rose to the station he should have given his exemplary record. he was never paid well, either, and was denied the chance to provide a better life for his hard-working mother. When years of stress and hard work finally broke her down, she died in her son's arms at only 47 years of age.

When his days as a soldier were at an end, Iordanus came to serve the wealthy Montovoldi family. It was during this time that his great nemesis, Adamo, came for him one eerie night and took him away and turned him into a vampire. For 84 years, from the fall of 1354 until the spring of 1438, Iordanus served as an underling for Adamo. He watched Adamo's cruelty up close and gradually put distance between himself and his master until that harrowing, awful day in Novokazalinsk when the cord was severed at last. From that point onwards, Iordanus fled Adamo. For a dozen years he looked for something to give renewed purpose to his life and he finally found it when he found Juliana. Juliana became his true love and partner for eternity.

But even in his happiest times, Iordanus never lost sight of the fact that Adamo was out there and always watching him. Adamo even watches him today. Someday, whether Iordanus wants it or not, the paths of father and son will cross for the final time and the circle will become complete.

This story of origins was really good and a very quick read. Like many short stories like it, it ends just as it is about to get engrossing. I will definitely have to pick up some of the other stories in the series.
