I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I initially didn't really have plans to read this book, as I wasn't fond of Malinda and Melchior was basically just a name on the page, and I think I even remember saying at the time that, as much as the writing wanted to convince us he was a thousand times worse than Malinda ever was, that it never worked for me because we don't get to see it.
Well, I've seen the "it" now and, my original assessment still stands. We do NOT get enough of Melchior actually BEING BAD to have the statement 'he's worse than Malinda' stand in any way, shape or form.
But I digress.
I decided to pick this one up because I ended up being curious ... and because I do LOVE what the author's doing here.
Main character(s): Malinda and Melchior take center stage, and I love them as a couple. I'd really love to see more of them, actually, and I'm convinced we've either met Melchior at some point in time already in the main series, or we still will, because there is NO WAY Malinda didn't make good on her promise to bring him back in more corporeal fashion.
Side character(s): I mean, we get a glimpse that it's always a man when the Fates go rogue, but ironically enough with this subverted Helen of Troy reference, perhaps going more for a mix of Paris (he of Troy fame) and maybe even Endymion for Selene, it's still a bit weird how the gods just sit there doing nothing. Like, yo, there are immortal beings breaking rules left, right and center, will you move your butts??
We do get to learn that Nico's actually WAY more powerful than I at least ever gave him credit for, which I appreciate. And yet I still don't quite understand the statement made by either Elijah or Jasper in the main books that Nico was the only one they could get into Gray Castle, because ... he was there from the beginning? He was literally Malinda's side-kick? I'm either missing something, or there's a loop-hole here.
World: we already know it, now we just see how Atropos gleefully decided that her trial run might be great to expand into a world-wide abomination while she tries to bring back the guy who didn't even love her enough because he married ANOTHER Fate.
Like, LOL.
Magic: I like that anyone can do magic if they have the ingredients and pronounce things well. It evens the playing field. Equally, I can now see that the Fates just play fast and loose with their designated jobs, considering Lachesis is over here doing the stabby-stabby when she's just supposed to be winding Time around.
Overall: this is a solid story, with a few question marks from me that dock it down a star from the pure 5.
1: killing Kirin, Malinda's roommate and thief buddy. I'm not sure if it's my ARC copy or what, but, one second you read she's leaving the house to go after Melchior, the next she's looking over the bridge to where the other girl flailed over after trying to do away with her. It feels like a CHUNK is missing, like, the entire confrontation isn't even there, so I'm hoping it's just my ARC, and not the final, published story.
2: the team to take down Atropos is never fully explained, or named. This is a bit scattered, and the reader kind of pieces it together as they go, but despite Melchior being so close-lipped about everything, I think it wouldn't hurt to actually list everyone out and outline it all a little more. Just a smidge.
3: mention of Atropos in Nico's chapter, when the beautiful woman comes to tell him to go save Morena from her snowy grave, and he thinks to himself why, since Atropos already killed so many? That's a bit confusing. It COULD mean that, because Atropos put the curse in place, she basically doomed everyone, but if not, then it's an editorial mistake as the queen at the time this happens is already Malinda - no longer Atropos.
This is a solid entry in the universe, however, and I honestly do wish I could find physical copies of these books, as I would LOVE to have them in my hands to more easily browse back and forth between them all. There's a lot being woven into this tapestry (see what I did there) and I think an eBook, as great as it is, can never hold a candle to the real deal. That's one of my next tasks, to hunt these down, because the dynamics of the world and the characters are amazing. Plus, the fourth book is the last, per the author's own words, and I really need to see just what Morena does next.
As, unfortunately, Malinda's plan to hone her into someone who can never be manipulated and who'll have a strong will and make decisions ... failed. Spectacularly.
BUT hey, we're in this for guys like Melchior and Elijah, so get your Death Masks, because we ride at dawn, and we take no prisoners! 10/10 do recommend you read this, and the entire series as a whole.
