Liars, Murderers, and Thieves: The Prince of Darkness is looking to hire.

For years Melchior, the youngest son of the Fate Atropos, has thought of nothing but vengeance against his mother - Death. A prisoner in his own castle, the Prince of Darkness is trapped in her wicked web, despite the fact that the Gods are on his side. He's been learning dark magic as a way to protect himself and his people from the cruelty of their Queen... with limited success, and the only way he's managed to leave the castle is by promising his mother that he'll find a bride and give her a grandchild.

All hope seems lost, until a simple thief crosses his path, arousing his interest. Melchior invites her to come with him, back to his cursed castle in Kinver'i, and conduct a daring heist that just might save their kingdom -- steal the Eternal Slumber, the mask of Death.

She's a courageous pawn, willing to risk her life for coin.
He's cunning and will do whatever it takes.

Will they betray each other? Or will they save their kingdom from Death and a bloody legacy?

Welcome to the world of Moirai, where greek mythology, folklore, and Fae collide in a gothic fantasy romance between a female villain and a dark prince who steals her heart.

*Please note: This series is set in the same world as the Queens of Moirai series, but can be read independently, and readers are encouraged to read the list of triggers inside the book.*

There was a willow I loved by a creek; sometimes I slept there. I was never afraid, alone in the dark. There was nothing to fear from water and trees and fairytales.

The real monsters were always people.

...

Can we forgive injustice?
Do we accept the fate forced upon us?
Should we fight, no matter the cost?
How do we move on from great loss?
What would you trade to relive one moment?

I write folklore and mythology inspired dark fantasy. Emphasis on dark. I don't shy away from serious issues and emotions: suicide, depression, mental illness, abuse, death, infertility, and assault are all in my books. These are not for pleasure or shock value, but because I want to write about authentic pain and suffering, and how we heal ourselves through the bad things that have been done to us.

My books will probably make you cry. I hope it helps more than it harms.

This book takes place before Queens of Moirai and is set in the same world, but can be read completely separate from Queens of Moirai. And I absolutely loved it! And absolutely LOVED all the characters…which having read Queens of Moirai previously, really surprised me. But I am a sucker for a solid origin story 👀 it makes me think that reading Queen of the BIood Throne and then following it up with Queens of Moirai would be SO fun and interesting. I loved the romance in this book and thought it was so well done and also just the right amount of 🌶️

Traces back Malinda and Melchiors story (Morenas parents). I liked this more than the first book. I REALLY want to love this series. It's such a unique story and blend of elements; but all the errors are just too much to ignore.

A LOT of spelling mistakes, multiple editing errors, as well as what I think are missing parts of the story. For example:

Nico gets mentioned at the halfway point of the book, but his character comes from absolutely nowhere. All of a sudden, he's just there, no introductions, no background, etc. It's only later that he gets introduced as Nilensi's son.

Right near the end, the author describes Malinda having just given birth to Morena, Melchior is with them and is described as not having human form anymore, only shadow. Then, a little further on it flashes back to the beginning of the first book, where they had multiple children who were buried in the snow BEFORE Morena was born. Malinda wasn't pregnant before Morena, as that was her first pregnancy. Continuity isn't there.

In my opinion, this book shouldn't have been released in this current state. It's like reading an unedited draft. I think it needs a do over, as it has so much potential.

No but why am I OBSESSED WITH THIS BOOK AND THIS SERIES?!? This is a prequel story that follows the previous generation from the Queens of Moirai, but I think that it fits so well as the second book, because your presumptions about certain characters are completely undone.

3.5 🌟

"I didn’t want children. Didn’t want to tie myself to a family. Lie, steal, cheat, kill… I’d always been willing to go very far for the sake of a scheme." (Ch 15)

Loving the new covers for this series!

I read Queens of Moirai and absolutely loved it! It was a 5 star read for me. This one, however, I disappointingly struggled to get into and stay attuned to.

"Danger had a high price." (Ch 5)

Melchior was so cold and distant and aloof, whereas Melinda was curious, explorative, and kind of reckless. Yet Melchior was low-key protective of her... and confusing with his capriciousness.

Slowly progressing toward the halfway mark, it started to pique my interest more. Like book 1, but as a prequel, this continues a blood path of the darkly vicious, unapologetically cruel, and leans toward the horror and macabre. Not for the faint of heart or squeamish.

“This is a nightmare. Am I dreaming?” (Ch 13)

I'm very confused about the ending. I know it was in the first book too, but the hows and whys of its existence is a puzzle. Doesn't quite add up or make sense.

"Destinies are fixed, it is only our journey that’s flexible." (Ch 22)

I have nothing but pure excitement about this book and i wish i can translate that through a screen.
I have read the first in this series and fell in love with the world and setting, it was one of the best books of 2023 so naturally i was expecting a lot with this one and boy oh boy did it reach those expectations.

The characters were all incredible, i can't believe this made me fall in love with a character i hated before, i'm not one for origin stories in books, they have never interested me or kept me captivated but my guys ... this one is built different, this origin story of malinda took me through one heck of a ride, i laughed i got excited i teared up and i fell in love.
A Romantasy done to perfection and a sad and incredibly whimsical (in a grimdark type) adventure.
The setting, honestly perfect.. from the descriptions to the pure vibe and aesthetic of the book and how it leaves you feeling in real life .. i have no complaints
The plot, smart, witty and unique. This follows the story of the fates, Clotho being life, Lachesis being time and Atropos,Death. Her son the prince of darkness and Malinda, the character i LOATHED before but now learned to love.
I spread out the last 5 chapters across a few days because i just could not get myself to finish this book.
The spice, was faultless, hot and stirring and absolutely perfect with the setting and progression of the plot. It was just right
Written in consummate passion that you can feel through it's pages.
Cannot wait to get more in the Descendants Of The Fates series.

Not sure how I missed this was a prequel book to the first book, not a sequel. I was over half down before it hit me, that's how far in the author hd me. I loved this story though the ending left something to be desired, which iff you read the first book this was something already known. Good characters, even bad guys. Good storyline and a engaging take on the fates. Will be looking for more of this in the future.

I really enjoyed this book and was so glad to be selected for this tour! This romantic fantasy was captivating right from the beginning.

The world building in this book was extremely well done and very immersive. I love the mix of Greek mythology with a dark gothic twist, and when I say dark, this can get very dark.

I found myself absolutely rooting for our strong female protagonist, Malinda. She’s determined, intelligent and brave and I loved watching her journey unfold from petty thief to wielding dark magic and marrying the Prince of Darkness.

Which brings us to Melchior, the Prince of Darkness himself. As you all know I love a dark, broody type love interest and he certainly ticks the boxes. His chemistry with Malinda is beautiful and I love their dynamic.

If you love mythology retellings and fated mates tropes, this book definitely needs to be added to your TBR list!

Prepare to be spellbound by the dark and captivating world of Moirai in Queen of the Blood Throne by Rhiannon Hargadon!

This mesmerizing fantasy romance takes readers on an exhilarating journey filled with twists, turns, and unexpected alliances. From the first page, I was drawn into the intrigue and magic of the story, unable to put it down until the very end.

Malinda Castan, our fierce and stabby protagonist, stole my heart with her determination and cunning. Her journey from petty thief to dark magic wielder is both compelling and empowering, and I found myself rooting for her every step of the way.

And then there's the enigmatic Prince of Darkness, a character shrouded in mystery and complexity. His dynamic with Malinda is electric, and I couldn't help but be swept away by their forbidden romance and undeniable chemistry.

The author’s world-building is rich and immersive, blending elements of mythology with a dark and gothic twist. The intricate web of politics, magic, and betrayal kept me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning pages to uncover the next twist or revelation.

Queen of the Blood Throne is a must-read for fans of time travel fantasy, mythology retellings, and fated mates tropes. Whether you're a seasoned fantasy reader or new to the genre, this book will captivate and enchant you from beginning to end.

Get ready to be transported to a world where darkness and passion collide in the most thrilling of ways. Don't miss out on this epic tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption!

“Fate gives and it takes, and it always takes more than you want to give.”

“Queen of the Blood Throne,” by Rhiannon Hargadon

I absolutely loved this book!! The story line and world building were so amazing. Gods that are pretty evil, shadow daddy character, a thief whose smart but not smart at the same with the amount of trouble she gets herself into, the fake marriage trope, all of it was so perfect. The ending was so heartbreaking, and I was not expecting to be as heartbroken as I was. I loved every second of this book. 5 out of 5 stars, can’t wait for more books by Rhiannon Hargadon

This is a prequel and an origin story for Malinda. I loved this book so much. It’s beautifully written and it really helps shine a light on Malinda and her experiences, which helps us understand her and her motivations during the other books that focus on Morena. You begin to understand why she raised her children the way she did. Why she told them to trust no one but themselves.

Malinda is sharp witted, astute and clever, bold and brave, and you can’t help but love her. I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing her go from thief, to wielder of dark magic and marrying the Prince of Darkness, Melchior.

The two of them together are FIRE. Their chemistry is fantastic. He’s dark and broody, she’s fierce and just a lil bit stabby. The perfect combo.
Watching their forbidden romance develop had me kicking my feet and squealing!

As always, Rhi’s world building is unique and complex, drawing on elements of Greek mythology and adding her own flair of gothic fantasy and I was hooked from the start. An incredible prequel that hit me with all the feels and provided a valuable insight into Malinda’s life before Morena.

I almost wish this came out BEFORE book 1 because this explained so many questions I had from book 1 but, I'm glad we got it regardless. I even went back and re-read through some of book 1 again after reading this just because there were some things that I was like "ohhh, wait!"

I truly enjoyed getting to see Malinda's past and what made her into the person we see because there is so much more to her. Reading book 1 I kept thinking to myself "her motives don't even make sense!" granted the very end explained a lot of that but, I still was a bit confused over why she did and said some of the things she did/said. So getting to see into her mind, getting the love story between her and Melchior and truly understanding what got her to this point that we see her in book 1 was fantastic and done so well.

I was NOT expecting to love Melchoir or even feel sorry for Malinda and like her and I genuinely liked them both. My heart hurt so much for what they both went through and though I knew they clearly did NOT get a happy ending, I was not prepared for just how badly their story was going to go or how much it would hurt reading the truth because we're told so many lies in book 1 from all the various characters and them either not knowing the truth or someone, somewhere, changing the narrative.

In the end, I did have a few questions left unanswered which I'm not sure if we'll get in either books 2 or 3 or if it's meant to be left unanswered so, I'm going to just add those here under a spoiler.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I initially didn't really have plans to read this book, as I wasn't fond of Malinda and Melchior was basically just a name on the page, and I think I even remember saying at the time that, as much as the writing wanted to convince us he was a thousand times worse than Malinda ever was, that it never worked for me because we don't get to see it.

Well, I've seen the "it" now and, my original assessment still stands. We do NOT get enough of Melchior actually BEING BAD to have the statement 'he's worse than Malinda' stand in any way, shape or form.

But I digress.

I decided to pick this one up because I ended up being curious ... and because I do LOVE what the author's doing here.

Main character(s): Malinda and Melchior take center stage, and I love them as a couple. I'd really love to see more of them, actually, and I'm convinced we've either met Melchior at some point in time already in the main series, or we still will, because there is NO WAY Malinda didn't make good on her promise to bring him back in more corporeal fashion.

Side character(s): I mean, we get a glimpse that it's always a man when the Fates go rogue, but ironically enough with this subverted Helen of Troy reference, perhaps going more for a mix of Paris (he of Troy fame) and maybe even Endymion for Selene, it's still a bit weird how the gods just sit there doing nothing. Like, yo, there are immortal beings breaking rules left, right and center, will you move your butts??

We do get to learn that Nico's actually WAY more powerful than I at least ever gave him credit for, which I appreciate. And yet I still don't quite understand the statement made by either Elijah or Jasper in the main books that Nico was the only one they could get into Gray Castle, because ... he was there from the beginning? He was literally Malinda's side-kick? I'm either missing something, or there's a loop-hole here.

World: we already know it, now we just see how Atropos gleefully decided that her trial run might be great to expand into a world-wide abomination while she tries to bring back the guy who didn't even love her enough because he married ANOTHER Fate.

Like, LOL.

Magic: I like that anyone can do magic if they have the ingredients and pronounce things well. It evens the playing field. Equally, I can now see that the Fates just play fast and loose with their designated jobs, considering Lachesis is over here doing the stabby-stabby when she's just supposed to be winding Time around.

Overall: this is a solid story, with a few question marks from me that dock it down a star from the pure 5.

1: killing Kirin, Malinda's roommate and thief buddy. I'm not sure if it's my ARC copy or what, but, one second you read she's leaving the house to go after Melchior, the next she's looking over the bridge to where the other girl flailed over after trying to do away with her. It feels like a CHUNK is missing, like, the entire confrontation isn't even there, so I'm hoping it's just my ARC, and not the final, published story.

2: the team to take down Atropos is never fully explained, or named. This is a bit scattered, and the reader kind of pieces it together as they go, but despite Melchior being so close-lipped about everything, I think it wouldn't hurt to actually list everyone out and outline it all a little more. Just a smidge.

3: mention of Atropos in Nico's chapter, when the beautiful woman comes to tell him to go save Morena from her snowy grave, and he thinks to himself why, since Atropos already killed so many? That's a bit confusing. It COULD mean that, because Atropos put the curse in place, she basically doomed everyone, but if not, then it's an editorial mistake as the queen at the time this happens is already Malinda - no longer Atropos.

This is a solid entry in the universe, however, and I honestly do wish I could find physical copies of these books, as I would LOVE to have them in my hands to more easily browse back and forth between them all. There's a lot being woven into this tapestry (see what I did there) and I think an eBook, as great as it is, can never hold a candle to the real deal. That's one of my next tasks, to hunt these down, because the dynamics of the world and the characters are amazing. Plus, the fourth book is the last, per the author's own words, and I really need to see just what Morena does next.

As, unfortunately, Malinda's plan to hone her into someone who can never be manipulated and who'll have a strong will and make decisions ... failed. Spectacularly.

BUT hey, we're in this for guys like Melchior and Elijah, so get your Death Masks, because we ride at dawn, and we take no prisoners! 10/10 do recommend you read this, and the entire series as a whole.

CW: violence, gore, death/murder, SA/attempted rape, some others

Thank you to the author for the ebook!

We don’t get nearly enough stories about the Fates, so having an entire series is a delightful (if bloody) treat.

How far would you go to change your fate? Malinda is a thief. Abandoned by her family and raised by a master criminal, she’s been saving for the day she can leave and become something else. When she’s given the opportunity to steal one last thing, it seems like just the chance she’s been waiting for. There’s just one catch— she’s going to have to steal from the Fate of Death herself.

Listen, I owe the author massive thanks for reaching out to see if I’d be interested in reading this book. I ARC read book 1, thoroughly enjoyed it, and then *somehow completely missed the release of books two and three?!* A travesty, and one I’m immensely glad to be remedying.

It’s been a hot minute since I read book 1, so I was a little concerned that I’d need to go back and reread it to fully enjoy this book. While I do think you’d get the most out of doing so, I found I was able to keep up with this storyline just fine. I think that’s mostly because, chronologically speaking, the events here take place prior to those of book 1 (although with the Fates involved time can be a little subjective). I’d still suggest reading this second, for potentially spoiler-y reasons.

We could discuss so many things here, but let’s start with the characters. Specifically Melinda, as she’s the main focus. This girl simply cannot catch a break, not from the literal day she’s born, and I feel so bad for her. As a character, she’s definitely flawed and has some major issues, but she’s someone you can root for. There are moments when you see glimpses of how easy it would be to tip her over the edge in one direction or another, but she consistently walks that line until she just can’t anymore. I had a harder time dealing with Melchior’s mood swings, but in his defense he was raised by literal Death, and she wasn’t exactly the ‘welcoming embrace’ sort of depiction.

The plot was solidly entertaining, and I read the entire book in a day. In a way, having the gap between reading 1 and 2 worked out well for me because, as book 2 progressed, I started remembering bits and pieces from 1 and seeing how they fit into the storyline from 2. “Slowly dawning horror” would probably be a good description for that process, and I loved every minute of it. The only ‘issue’ I had was with the timeline; sometimes it was difficult to get a feel for how much time was actually passing at certain points. Given the rest of the story, though, I’m inclined to believe this is an intentional choice to play into what’s happening for the characters at those moments. Once you get used to just going along with that particular flow, everything else goes fine.

I remember being really excited about reading the first book in the ‘Descendants of the Fates’ series, “Queens of Moirai,” because I love stories rooted in mythology. Finding a new series about not just mythology but the actual Fates? And it’s been spun into something entirely new and unique? Sign me up, immediately. It brings me no small amount of pleasure to report that the series thus far is living up to every expectation I could have had for it, and I’m eagerly looking forward to getting back to the story in book 3.

Rhiannon Hargadon has crafted a masterpiece of dark fantasy in Queen of the Blood Throne, a captivating tale of secrets, magic, and a forbidden love that burns hotter than any inferno. From the very first page, I was utterly engrossed in the morally grey world she created, populated with characters who are as flawed as they are fascinating.

Malinda Castan, our "petty thief" with a surprisingly resilient heart, is a protagonist you can't help but root for. Her pursuit of a better life is both relatable and inspiring, even as she navigates the treacherous underbelly of the Nightingale and the even more dangerous court of the Prince of Darkness. Her pragmatism and unwavering loyalty, especially when tested by impossible circumstances, make her a truly compelling heroine.

And the Prince of Darkness? Oh, be still my beating heart! Hargadon masterfully portrays him as a complex and enigmatic figure. He's powerful, yes, but also trapped and vulnerable. His cunning and ruthless ambition are balanced by a deep-seated desire to protect his people, making him a hero in his own twisted way. The slow burn between him and Malinda is exquisitely crafted, filled with suspicion, undeniable attraction, and a desperate need they both try to deny. Their chemistry practically crackles off the page!

The plot is a whirlwind of intrigue and suspense. The stakes are constantly raised, forcing Malinda to make impossible choices and delve deeper into the darkness. The quest for the Eternal Slumber is fraught with peril, and the layers of deception and hidden agendas kept me guessing until the very end. Hargadon's world-building is richly detailed and immersive, drawing you into a realm where dark magic reigns and deals are made with gods old and new.

This is more than just a fantasy romance; it's a story about survival, sacrifice, and the power of love to bloom in the most unexpected places. Hargadon's writing is sharp, evocative, and perfectly paced, leaving you breathless and craving more.

If you're looking for a dark and captivating fantasy read with morally ambiguous characters, a sizzling romance, and a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further than Queen of the Blood Throne. This book has earned a permanent spot on my favorites shelf, and I eagerly await the next installment! Prepare to be enthralled. You won't regret it.

✨🩸REVIEW 🩸✨

Queen of the Blood Throne is Book 2 in the Descendants of the Fates Series. It is a gothic Fantasy romance about the Fates: Life, Death, and Time. This book will blow your mind after the first book. It’s a fast paced page turner. Malinda is a character you hate in book 1 (Queens of Moirai). She has done things that seem horrible, but in this second book you will grow to like/ understand her. It has so much background information that drives the story line in the first book! I look forward to the next book in the series!

Queen of the Blood Throne by Rhiannon Hargadon

Malinda is an expert thief surviving in the dangerous underground of Fidelisgrove in the kingdom of Moirai. She learned her skills from her surrogate father, Zephyros Castan, the leader of the Jackdaws gang. One day, Malinda is rescued from a monstrous creature called a Keres by Melchior, the prince of darkness. Melchior's mother, Atropos, one of the three fates, is pushing him to find a wife. Melchior offers Malinda a deal. If she steals a magical mask from his mother, he will give her an absurd amount of gold. After discussing it with Zephyros, Malinda decides to accept the offer, and they set off towards Atropos' home, better known as Death's Castle. The question is, can Malinda survive in a castle filled with horror and dark magic?

Rhiannon Hargadon has written an incredible fantasy novel. The story is set in a world with beautiful landscapes in stark contrast to the horror that lies within the palace. Every character is crafted meticulously to serve a tangible purpose in the story. The plot is clever and engrossing, and it kept me hooked long after I should have been sleeping. It felt like I was unpeeling a poisonous onion, extracting every bit of lore and bitterness, layer upon layer. Despite all the decay, there is light at the end of the tunnel, in the form of hope and love.

As I looked at the flames of my fireplace through a tantalizing glass of red wine, I reminisced. This was a special novel to be savored. I am grateful to the author for allowing me to invest my time in her world. So I say to you, dear reader, do not be afraid for this will be time well spent. I am giving this 5 out of 5 stars⭐ I can't recommend enough!

3.5 💫

I’d like to start off by saying this story was very captivating, the character’s storylines were intriguing and for the most part well connected. I love the idea that this book represents going against your destiny, choosing something different and actually having that free will to change the course of your life.

Melinda hasn’t been treated fairly by the Fates regarding the course of her life. She’s smart and cunning and wholly unwilling to allow her destiny to be predetermined, she believes there are multiple threads within time that allow changes to your destiny and she’s determined to find each one in hopes of a better ending.

Melchior seeks out Melinda to have her help him stop Atropos by stealing the mask of eternal slumber. If they can accomplish this, they’ll be able to save his people from Deaths wrath. Melchior and Melinda have the Gods on their side along with the help of Lachesis the Fate of Time, although her help will come at a great cost to the both of them.

I loved the dynamic between Melchior and Melinda, but I felt like there was something missing from their chemistry. Their connection felt rushed and they didn't have a lot of scenes to connect with one another, it left me wanting more of their story.

This book is meant to be a prequel and can be read as a stand alone which is why I felt like Melchior and Melinda’s story could have been written more in depth. I think this book has so much potential but the details and storyline need to be laid out with more fluidity.

Thank you for the ARC, Rhiannon!

This book had me in a very tight grip! It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I could not put it down!

I was very curious about the past of Morena's family after her conversation with Elijah's mother in book one and I'm so glad we got Malinda's story!

It's a prequel about Morena's parents but it's best to be read AFTER book one.

I can't say too much without giving spoilers for book one so I'm not gonna go into details, but this book did the impossible! I thought I could not, not hate Malinda but although her actions towards her children are inexcusable to me, I now do understand and feel very different about her.

The world building was amazing again and the writing was absolutely brilliant! It made me realize that, even with reading, we often just assume things! The plot twists were amazing and going in I did NOT expect things to happen like that! It completly changed my point of view for book one. I did not want to leave this world and I'm buzzing to pick up where book one left off, with my new point of view, so I'm diving straight into book three!

This book was definitely darker than book one and at times pretty macabre so make sure to check the TW if you have any.

Some books don’t ask for your heart. They rip it out and keep it. Queen of the Blood Throne by Rhiannon Hargadon is a gothic blend of myth and medieval grit. Where power is earned, not gifted, and survival is its own kind of crown.

Malinda isn’t a hero. She’s a strategist, a survivor, and sometimes, something far colder. Every choice she makes (no matter how brutal)feels deeply human. There’s no glory here, just a woman fighting for a future that’s barely within reach.

The worldbuilding? Chef’s kiss. Death’s castle alone is worth the read. Dark, lush, and pulsing with dread. It sets the stage for everything Malinda endures and everything she dares to want. And the dynamic with the Prince of Darkness? Complicated. Tense. Addictive. You won’t be able to look away.

The mythology woven through is subtle but impactful, grounding the fantastical in something ancient and inevitable. While a few side characters could’ve been explored more deeply, they still served their role in building the tension and stakes.

Malinda doesn’t want the throne. But when fate corners her, she doesn't flinch. She calculates. She survives. And she decides what her story will become.

This is not a fairy tale. It’s a reckoning.

Wait…do I actually like Malinda now? That can’t be right…

But I do! Queen of the Blood Throne was a great prequel for the Descendants of the Fates series. I actually really enjoyed Malinda’s character throughout this entire book and really fell in love with her and Melchior’s dynamic. Learning about Malinda’s past helps put her character into a different perspective after the first book. Queen of the Blood Throne was also a pretty quick read for me as I was really engrossed in the story.

I would say I definitely enjoyed Queen of the Blood Throne more than Queens of Moirai. The book feels more polished and I just really loved the characters in this one. It was a bit shocking because I didn’t like Malinda in the first book but now that we know her backstory, I feel for her a lot more as a character. Melchior was also an amazing character that I had a great time reading. I’m really looking forward to the next book in the Descendants of the Fates series!

Thank you so much to Rhiannon Hargadon and BookSirens for the copy of this book! All opinions are my own.

A well-imagined prequel, this shows us everything Morena didn't know about her parents' past. A few coincidences (like THE one grimoire and a t second conversation that changes everything) are too convenient, but the outwitting of fate and all its twists and turns is well done and makes "sense". It's a villain backstory that makes you feel for the villain and decry that she let these things happen with all she went through.

Note: There are a good handful of typos and editorial misses, and it could do with a small amount of tightening up. Examples: the knowledge of the cullen goes back and forth between "woah this is crazy new magic wtf" to "these are everywhere and everyone knows about them" several times. Also the Nico bit at the end confused me bc how were there suddenly multiple babies before Morena? I felt like I needed a map between both books and also just this one bc there definitely seemed to be some continuity and consistency issues.

Some spice, but nothing too egregious (though it goes the line for someone who doesn't like spice).

Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Set in the past, a prequel of sorts, this story highlights Malinda and Melchior's part in the series. The books can be read alone, but I feel like they just gel more when read together to give the full idea of what happened, is happening, and will happen.

So, in the glimpse into the past, we see that Melchior is the youngest son of the Fate, Atropos, but he feels like he's trapped, and he convinces his mother to leave him leave if he gets married and has a child, and that's how Malinda ends up being a pawn in their game.

What I enjoyed about this book was seeing a softer side of Malinda because she's definitely the villain throughout the first book. Seeing how she turned into what she did and why sort of explains it all, though it doesn't entirely excuse it. The spice as usual from Rhiannon is spicing even with the few scenes there were, and the characters were awesome, even in their deceit.

If you are looking for a great book with an ancient folklore feel, great characters, an intriguing plot, and spice. this is it

"You realize most people would be speechless with fear in the face of Death." --- "Yet here we are, drinking wine," I replied, a sly smile twisting my lips."

Just Wow!

I'm not really one for Novellas, prequels etc., but I'm starting to change that, especially when they're like this.

"As welcoming as a black widow, or a sip of poison. She lifted her eyes to us as we entered."

This lovely book is easily one of the best ones I've read so far this year. It gives us insight into Malinda's past and how/why she became the way she was. We get to learn more about Morena's parents, Malinda & Melchior, their relationship, and her grandmother, Atropos. We also learn a great deal more about Lachesis, Vitess and Elijah's, grandmother.

"The prince was like a calming balm. Like winter mornings, like icicles on evergreens, like quiet, like hot tea in a wooden cup with a sprig of mint floating on its surface."

This book is hauntingly beautiful, heartbreaking and totally worth it!

Queen of the Blood Throne (Descendants of the Fates #2) is the gripping prequel to Queens of Moirai, offering a deep dive into the villain's origin story. While I didn’t initially think I needed this backstory, once I started, I couldn’t stop reading. Hargadon masterfully weaves a tale where everything falls into place, with each revelation pulling you deeper into the dark fantasy world she’s created.

The emotional depth of the characters is striking, with their motivations, flaws, and struggles laid bare in a way that truly resonates. The worldbuilding continues to shine, expanding the rich universe with layers of complexity. And the romance—dark and consuming—adds an extra level of intensity to the story.

For anyone who loved Queens of Moirai, Queen of the Blood Throne is a must-read, offering a fresh perspective on the series' events while adding richness and nuance to the overall narrative. It's an addictive, emotional ride that you won’t want to stop.

3 Stars.

I was very excited to read this book, but I am going to have to go back and reread the Queens of Moirai, because I am having such a difficult time of wondering why this book felt like it was written by someone else. I don't remember the first book being written in this style, but I could have just forgotten.

This book fell flat. The characters existed, the world existed, there was some drama, whatever. I wasn't emotionally invested in this book, and found it to be unremarkable.

I did enjoy getting to see Malinda's perspective, though. It added such a depth to her character, and I finished the book wanting to pick up the first one just to see how everything tied together.

Aside from that, I don't have much to say. I feel that the book could've been much better, but it was still a somewhat enjoyable read.

There is SO much I love about this book:

*Punchy dialogue

*Strong FMC

*Fast paced

*Action packed

*High stakes

*Visceral setting

When I say I gobbled this, I finished it within 48 hours of starting. I just HAD to know how it ended.

Read as a stand alone, would be interested to see how the first book impacted how I felt about this one. In a few places I had to wonder if my confusion was a result of the lack of background, my unfamiliarity with mythology retellings, or if, perhaps, some finer details were on the cutting room floor. Despite brief moments of confusion, the world is easy to follow while also being interesting (not easily achieved I find).

So while it could use a little polish, do not sleep on this gem of a story!

I actually enjoyed this book more than I did the first book. While it can be read as a standalone, I think reading the first book actually made this 1 more exciting even though it's set before the first book. I knew what was in the future for Melinda but reading her story of how she got there was intense and kept me turning pages because I just had to know why she became the way she was since in this book she isn't evil. I do wish this book took us through Melinda's life all the way till Morena is grown so I'm hoping in the next book it fills in those missing years to explain Melchior's shadows and Morena's siblings maybe the next book will be from Nico's point of view and answer all my questions. I'm thoroughly invested and can't wait. Love this series and will definitely recommend it!
