Sig thought that changes to the world which strengthened magic had passed him by, until he discovered that he was chosen to be a major player in the battle against Black Magic.
Unfortunately, only part of the power bequeathed to him is operational. The ability to change into a nine-foot tall, 700-pound Battle Wizard with a nearly invincible sword is great, but it doesn’t mean much in this age of rockets, tanks, and fighter jets.
He can’t even light a candle with magic, like almost any other magical being can.
The Wizard who is the head of the Physics of Magic department at Northwestern University takes Sig under his wing to help him discover the rest of his magic.
Living at college while he finishes his last semester of high school is neat and Sig meets new magical friends including a werewolf and a tribe of Amazons. At least it was neat before the Dark Mage who defeated Sig’s Battle Wizard great-grandfather comes after Sig. He invokes the services of a Demon Marquis of Hell to kill Sig. College just isn't what Sig imagined.

He’s always enjoyed writing, even though early writings were mostly Product Specifications, Sales Proposals, and Departmental Budgets. Most readers assumed those were fictional.

The dialogue is witty, snappy, and very intelligent, especially when the wise older man, The Professor, playing the role model of someone above the fray but able to put in a good fight, like Professor Dumbledore of the Harry Potter series, speaks.
The storyline is very modern and is in the classic realm of speculative fiction. It's set in today's world, but involves tons of fantasy. My favourite combination.
Sig, the main character, is very likeable. He's unassuming, but is able to pick a good fight. He's a gentleman with the ladies, especially when sorely tempted as he fights with several women, one at a time, for practice and training. These women hail from a race called the Amazons, and as you can guess from the name of the race, they're long-limbed, agile, and ferocious.
This book contains quite a bit of humour. The spectacle of Sig having to claim insurance for his car -- which is demolished three times -- often by lightning striking a tree which falls onto the car -- is hilarious.
The cons:
Sometimes I felt there wasn't a story arc. The story takes place on campus at a university and Sig is studying the physics of magic. The plot seems defensive... Sig has to defend himself often against a dark mage and his wolf. There are many lulls in the story where Sig is training for combat, studying for his degree, or interacting with his friends and The Professor. As we don't see a mission for Sig, except to stay alive, it's hard for us to get caught up.
At other times, I wasn't sure if the information revealed was tied in to the plot. For example, there was a lot of discussions on the physics of magic, but it turned out to be for the purpose of conveying fascinating tidbits. At other times, Sig was attacked, but sometimes Sig is in a vulnerable place, and nothing happens. For example, Sig and his friends go on a hunting trip, and they have a good time, with no attacks on them. This leaves me wondering what the master plan of the dark mage was. Since the story is mainly told from Sig's perspective, we are unable to know what the dark mage is planning, and this may take away from the suspense.
I acknowledge it's nice to have a rambling story, and to get to know the characters. With that perspective, I was able to relax and enjoy the ride, even if the pacing was uneven.
All in all, this book is terrific for its 1) imagination 2) witty dialogue, and 3) intelligent writing.
The Battle Wizard Saga continues to hold my interest with volume 2. Lance has mixed wizards and magic along with creatures of myth and placed them in a dystopian future on Earth. The characters don't just come to life; they breathe life into each other. There are two battles happening at the same time, the battle of Sig, and his friends against the Dark Mage and a quietly discernible fight between the bigotry of non-magic users and those who are magic users. Many new characters were developed in volume 2, of which, my favorites were the Amazons. I could see them in all of their towering, well-muscled beauty. Lance develops both mystery and suspense, not just between good and evil. The protagonists have secrets of their own that make me anxious for volume 3. Without spoiling, there is a constant hook having to do with the main protagonist that I am more than ready to see resolved. The antagonist I slowly revealed leaving a huge surprise at the end of this volume. Sig is becoming more powerful and realizing that his magic comes with responsibilities. Luckily, he has lots of good friends to help him fight the evil that exists in Lance`s exciting world. This book and its predecessor are quality entertainment for anyone from young adults to old fart`s like me. With magic, werewolves, amazons, and a strong villain this book has something for everyone. Recommending this book is a pleasure!
Wizard's Sword by CM Lance is book two of the Battle Wizard Saga, and is even better than the first one!
Sig is now at Northwestern where he moves in with the Professor, becomes best friends with Rick the werewolf, and meets a tribe of Amazon women who test his battle skills to the limit. He's still being chased by the Dark Wizard, except now his grandfather Thor is in a coma in the hospital and unable to help. And college is a little harder than he thought.
This installment really dives into the character of Sig. Author CM Lance does an awesome job establishing Sig as a mature young adult, but still a teenage boy. He flirts with girls and goes out with his friends and is possessive of his Jeep. We get to learn more about Rick and his family and why a werewolf is so far from home. We meet some more people who really don't like Sig, and see how Sig deal with that.
I loved Sig's way of trying to hide his Battle Wizard form, which is 9 feet tall and 700 pounds. Yet, eventually, he has to trust the Amazon girls and that only opens up more issues! He's a great fighter in both forms, and the Amazon girls give him a run for his money.
