Dr. Charles F. Stanley is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta, founder of In Touch Ministries, and a New York Times best-selling author who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than nine million copies. He demonstrates a keen awareness of people's needs and provides Christ-centered, biblically-based principles for everyday life.

Charles Frazier Stanley was born September 25, 1932, in the small town of Dry Fork, Virginia. The only child of Charley and Rebecca Stanley, Charles came into the world during a time when the entire nation felt the grip of the Great Depression. To make matters worse, just nine months later, his father Charley died at the young age of 29.

However, Charles refused to let the Great Depression or the difficulties of his life define him. Instead, like his father and grandfather before him, he clung to God’s Word and took up the mantle to preach the gospel to whoever would listen.

Dr. Stanley’s motivation is best represented by the truth found in Acts 20:24, “Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God's mighty kindness and love.” This is because, as he says, “It is the Word of God and the work of God that changes people’s lives.”

Dr. Stanley’s teachings can be heard weekly at First Baptist Church Atlanta, daily on “In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley” radio and television broadcasts on more than 2,800 stations around the world, on the Internet at intouch.org, through the In Touch Messenger, and in the monthly, award-winning In Touch magazine.

WALKING WITH GOD is a collection of quotes from Stanley's sermons and scriptures to accompany each quote. If a reader has never been introduced to Stanley, this book is a great way to get to know him, his style, and his faith.

WALKING WITH GOD is structured around 30 Life Principles, for example "Intimacy With God", and "We Stand Tallest While On Our Knees." Each Life Principle is a chapter, so this book could be used for a guide in daily study, doing one life principle a day. Lately I have been using the book as a resource. The book is flexible enough to succeed on both levels, and that is one of it's strongest points.

The simplicity of the presentation of the material draws out the reader's thought. There is no narrative from Stanley, other than a couple of paragraphs thanking supporters of his IN TOUCH Ministry. I, for one, like this approach, however, not getting commentary from the author other than sermon quotes is a bit of a downer because he is one of this century's foremost Biblical experts.

The only reason I did not rate this work five stars is because in a couple of Life Principles felt a bit forced to complete and a couple seemed not long enough. However, considering the knowledge transferred to the reader as a whole, the reader doesn't really notice the brevity described above.

Simply stated, Stanley knows and relies on the Word of God, and it's evident in this volume. There is a lot to like about WALKING WITH GOD. It's most definitely worth the investment in time and money and should be on your reading list.

Stanley provides his thirty life principles for having a personal relationship with God, using as backup scripture and quotes from his sermons. This book is useful as a reference when using a Bible other than Stanley's LIfe Principles annotated Bible. I find it interesting that he uses the NASB translation, which is the one I use first, when I recall him saying once that the KJV MacArthur Study Biboe was the first recommended to him for preaching.
