This concise, readily understandable book is designed as a guide to one of the supreme scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism: the Threefold Lotus Sutra. With careful consideration of the relationships among the 32 chapters, the author outlines the contents and explains the major points.
Noah said this should be the first book anybody reads about Buddhism. He likes to give copies of it away to friends, so he got me one and I read it immediately. I don't know if he did this on purpose or not, but he burned incense around it before he gave to me, and still, like a month later, the pages smell like incense, so when you open it to read you're already transported, at least a little bit, to a different world. This was definitely very interesting, and it made me want to read the Three-Fold Lotus Sutra. Without this guide, I'm sure I would have no idea what was going on it. Noah's reading Journey to the West, which I also want to read after this. A long time ago, my husband found a kid's TV show called "Monkey Madness" that was based on JttW. The show was totally trippy and hilarious, and Noah promises the book will be no disappointment. These kinds of things are interesting to me on two levels: as comparative religion/history study and as a glimpse into a culture that is so different you just can't believe it. It's nice to have your expectations shaken up and your imagination inspired like that. Thanks, Noah!
