This collection completes the late Stuhlmueller's meditations on the readings for Ordinary Time, a work that encompasses three volumes.
I especially valued his meditations for the closing weeks of Ordinary Time because the daily lectionary readings -- especially the first -- during this period feature texts from various apocalyptic texts, including those from Daniel and Revelation, while the Gospel texts look at what Luke presents Jesus as saying about both the coming troubles of Jerusalem as well as of the "end times."
To be candid, such writings are far from my favorites! When they were written, the authors were trying to make sense of CURRENT trials while also attempting to convey consolation for those suffering NOW. In the case of the Book of Daniel, while purportedly written in the 6th century B.C., it was actually composed in the second when the Jewish people were resisting the forceful imposition of Greek culture upon them by the Seleucid king Antiochus.
Similarly with the Book of Revelation, which was written during the period of Christian persecution under Nero.
As for Jesus' sayings, they are vestiges of what appears to be his genuine belief that the "end times" -- those which would mark the inbreaking of God's "kingdom" into our corrupt world -- was, indeed, near.
