Walls is the breakout new psychological suspense novel from author Alex Jones, and is the first of three psychological thrillers making up The Identity Trilogy. Jones’ insight into the inner conflicts and erotic fantasies of his four main characters opens our eyes to the tragic world of trauma and abuse, its frightening effects on the human mind, and the resiliency and spirit of those who manage to survive.
Psychologist Dan Whitney and his wife Michelle, an emergency room nurse, live an otherwise unspectacular life in suburban Detroit. To help inject some new life back into their marriage, they decide upon a somewhat unconventional resort hotel in Palm Springs as the setting for their romantic getaway. But their plan starts to unravel slowly almost as soon as they arrive when they are presented with a series of unexpected roadblocks. All seems lost when mechanical problems suddenly cause their hotel room to be unavailable. Luckily, their vacation is saved at the last minute by Philippe Morel, the hotel’s wealthy and personable owner, who invites them to spend the rest of their vacation at the opulent estate he shares with his enigmatic wife, Francesca.
Dan’s initial relief is short-lived and he becomes increasingly suspicious of Philippe’s motives. Too late, he realizes that Philippe has been playing him against Michelle in a sinister plan to meet his own sadistic needs. A plan that creates not only an immense rift in Dan’s marriage, but puts their lives in peril. Will Dan be able to find a way to rescue his marriage to Michelle? Will they be able to find a way to work together to survive Philippe’s manipulation, and break free from his seductive web of blackmail and deceit? More importantly, will they be able to find a way to escape with their lives?
Alex Jones is the author of The Identity Trilogy, a series of psychological thrillers packed full of romance and suspense, featuring psychologist Dan Whitney and the enigmatic Francesca Capellini. In his first two books, Walls (Trilogy Book #1) and Angela’s Eyes (Trilogy Prequel), Alex brought to light the issues of domestic and sexual abuse, especially by those in positions of power, a full five years before the “MeToo” movement came into existence! While the rest of the world was glamorizing BDSM in Fifty Shades of Grey, Alex painted a gritty, disturbing picture of the potential dark side to the BDSM lifestyle in Walls. In Faces (Trilogy Book #2), Alex focused on parental child abduction. Finally, in Spirits (Trilogy Book #3), he focused on the epidemic of military sexual abuse, years before rampant systemic sexual abuse (in the very highest ranks) was exposed in Canada’s Armed Forces. In his most recent book, The Night Class, Alex has tackled the issue of Indigenous Truth and Reconciliation, and the appalling lack of progress in that process to date.
Alex is not the conspiracy theorist from Texas, for those who may be wondering! Instead, he is a retired Clinical Psychologist who lives in Ontario, Canada. In his writing, Alex combines his understanding of human identity and personality, his passion for helping victims of trauma, abuse, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and his love of reading fiction, to create a unique brand of psychological suspense and political commentary. His writing is rich in complex characters and controversial social issues, resulting in an abundance of internal and interpersonal conflict, dysfunction, and tension. Alex also enjoys spending time with his wife and grandchildren, as well as enjoying travel, photography, and brewing craft-beer that pairs perfectly with reading a great book.
Holy shit. I'm serious... just wow!! Tears in my eyes, fear in my heart and this story is not even close to being over. Cannot wait for the next instalment. Review follows.
My head is spinning right now. This author, in his debut release, magically weaves a plot that leaves you wondering what is going to happen next, lets you inside the heads of each of the characters, and slowly unfolds the reasons why each of them are the way they are. This story follows the lives of two couples who are at different stages in their lives and relationships. Both couples are married, with significant issues, on entirely different levels, from one crumbling marriage to another built on fear.
Philippe and Francesca, who manage a nudist resort in Palm Springs, have suffered childhood traumas, including murder, rape and suicide, which are sadly just some of the reasons that have caused them to dissociate and hide behind barriers within their minds. Building those walls seemed like the only way they had survived their dark, haunting memories, and protected themselves from self-destruction. But for how long can one keep that bottled up?
Dan and Chelley to the contrary lead much simpler lives. Dan, a psychologist, convinces his wife, Chelley, to join him on a nudist vacation, in hopes of putting the spark back in their marriage. Chelley wants Dan to be more romantic, but all of Dan's efforts go unnoticed. When Chelley meets the handsome, charming Frenchman, Philippe, she's smitten and Philippe is no less captivated by her. With her walls crashing down around her, she opens her mind and instils trust in her fast friends at the resort. But when Dan makes a decision without affording Chelley the opportunity to give her input, their relationship is instantly driven between a rock and a hard place.
Swinging, spanking and nudism. It's all in there. "Yeow Chelly!" But when their real life fantasies turn into a nightmare, all of their limits will be put to the test. A slew of events happen right when you get the slight feeling of satisfaction, leaving you wanting nothing but more. I cannot wait for the next instalment in this trilogy!!
WARNING: This story contains BDSM, and Fifty Shades was a walk in the park compared to what you're going to get here.
Whoa! When I began this story, for some unknown reason I thought it was a tale about the failures that often happen in marriages that become boring. Michelle and Dan are a couple in their forties, that are going through some troubles in their marriage. Dan, a psychologist, wanting so desperately to fix their marriage, mostly their sexual relationship, but his wife Michelle is so resistant and he doesn’t understand why. Michelle is confusing, on one hand she has sexual fantasies about a man Richard, yet is so cold towards Dan. She calls him boring yet she is the one embarrassed to disrobe when they go to a nudist camp. Dan wants only his wife’s happiness, he will do whatever it is to make her happy, even if that means letting her live out her sexual fantasies with another man. Another couple enters the picture, the owners of the nudist camp they attend, Fran and Phillipe and things turn in a different direction. Soon, Dan and Michelle find what they think they are looking, maybe be more than what they ask for.
This book was so boring I couldn't finish it and I usually finish every book I pick up even if I hate 'em. Sounds like it was written by a psychologist. Oops, it was!
