An Introduction to Theories of Popular Culture is widely recognized as an immensely useful textbook for students taking courses in the major theories of popular culture. Strinati provides a critical assessment of the ways in which these theories have tried to understand and evaluate popular culture in modern societies. Among the theories and ideas the book introduces mann culture, the Frankfurt School and the culture industry, semiology and structuralism, Marxism, feminism, postmodernism and cultural populism. This new edition provides fresh material on Marxism and feminism, while a new final chapter assesses the significance of the theories explained in the book.
a book of precise elucidation of the positions of various schools of thought on mass culture, such as the Frankfurt approach, structuralism, Marxism and feminist theory, albeit one that fills its chapters by quoting heavily on primary texts and other sources. Nevertheless, there is much nifty food for thought in this book, as it includes both philosophical criticisms of mass culture as opposed to high culture and folk culture-- and opposing responses to those criticisms
Loved it! Here's my favorite quote: "With industrialisation and urbanisation....community and morality break down. [Individuals] become isolated, alienated and anomic, the only relationships open to them being those of a financial and contractual kind. They are absorbed into an increasingly anonymous mass, manipulated by the only source of a surrogate community and morality available to them, the mass media. In this world, mass culture spreads like a deadly ether suffocating folk culture and threatening to stifle the very integrity of art."
An intelligible and thorough introduction to the many modern theories of popular culture analysis. Highly recommended if you want a basic introduction to popular culture studies. May be slightly outdated now, as the significantly revised second edition appeared in 2005.
Honestly, if this is the introduction to theories of Popular Culture, I need an introduction to the introduction of theories of Popular Culture because I could not understand most of this books
Good introduction to popular culture that ends with postmodernism, and therefore is a bit dated, as for example metamodernism is missing. Nevertheless the theories covered are well described and critiqued. A recommendation for everyone wanting to get familiar with popular culture theory.
This is well worth a read if your interested in various areas of popular culture and a view to understanding both the negative and positive attributes it brings, offering many schools of thought.
