As a Drea, Taylee Pierce, is a walking energy bong—or that’s how the gift stealing Rygons see her. Her ability to control minds in their hands could mean the destruction of the Kember and Drea race. Laced with speed, strength, and a physical ability, each Kember holds the key to not only defeat the Rygons, but to protect one Drea until death.
But what happens when one who’s born to protect, hunts instead?
During a heated battle with a rogue Kember, Taylee’s forced to run and let her own Kember—the man who raised her—face him alone. With the announcement of her protector’s death, Taylee’s anger and obsession regarding the mysterious murderer take over. She’s hell-bent on bringing her guardian justice, even if it means walking into the enemy’s trap.
I will remember this book for Taylee the Terrible.
The story itself is interesting. I like the Drea/Rygon/Kember aspect. Wouldn't mind reading more about what those actually are and what they can do.
I like Aiden - he is badass and I would love to read more about him. HOWEVER... I can already tell he is going to fall for Taylee, and I just can't watch that happen.
Why? Taylee. Taylee is horrible. Utterly unlikeable. I don't think I have ever encountered a female MC that I like less. She is a 17 (+?) year old who behaves like a 2 year old. Completely selfish, irresponsible and disrespectful. It was painful for me to read. I was cringing, then I was just pissed. Totally unacceptable behavior for an almost-adult. She refuses to accept reality. She manipulates other people to get her own way, even when it puts them in danger. And when people get hurt - or killed - due to her behavior, she doesn't even show remorse for her actions. I think she might be a sociopath or have borderline personality disorder or something. It was not comfortable or enjoyable to spend time in her head. I kept debating... 'Should I put the book down?'... but kept going, hoping she would get more likeable. Nope.
I can't watch Aiden fall in love with this chit. I would lose all respect for him, and I actually liked him.
The only way I would continue reading this series is if Taylee died on page 1 of book 2, and her previously unknown, but nicer twin sister Baylee, took over.
Just finished this great book that was written by my niece. It is YA fantasy and is plum full of never ending action. Some hoped for romance and a main character that is brash and rebellious but you get to see her start to grow as she learns more about who she really is. There is more swearing than I like from Taylee at the first of the story but as the story evolves her character grows and she uses less swearing so don't let that stop you from finishing the book. You won't be sorry!
I'm not sure how I feel about this one but it was a short read. The intrigue and mystery pulls me in but Taylee and circumstances shove me back out. I absolutely didn't like, not in a way detrimental to the read, that Dalmari died so quickly. I'd have liked to know him better as a reader but it's all good. Taylee pushes boundaries, has a quick temper, a smart mouth, and not enough sense at times to know when it's best to keep it shut which I chalk up to age seeing as how she's not yet 18. I figure those lessons will come later. Combined with her goal to avenge Dalmari's death, those things make her impulsive and manipulative as she tries to deal with his killer. After tangoing with Sage twice, I'm hopeful some sense begins to creep in and she admits she needs help and takes time to wait for either an improvement to her current abilities or a plan than involves more firepower than she currently has at her disposal.
Ian quickly went to the unlikeable category given the way he handled Taylee when she came running into his office. He's not done anything to redeem himself in my eyes yet and he and Taylee have a history. Now throw in Aidan who is young but still has been a warrior and in the organization for a long time as Taylee's next protector. It surprises me that he not only listens to her, which in itself is more a hmmm moment than anything, but that he takes her to Portland to find Sage, which is a head scratcher, but then finally when she's developing this strange tattoo that he agrees with her to wait a few days before telling Ian. Ian who is still on my shit list I admit but use the resources available to you. Neither Taylee not Aidan know what the tattoo is or why it has developed other than it appeared after her second run in with Sage, so going it alone doesn't make sense to me. Whether it's Joshua who was a trusted friend of Dalmari's or someone Aidan knows who can keep it to themselves, they need help and indulging Taylee's paranoia whether warranted or not seems foolish.
Aidan seems to be an incredibly competent Kimber which is great but with the threat they're facing, I'm not sure why it's only him. Perhaps that's just the way the organization does things but a bit more world building would help in that regard I think. Drea and Kimber aren't explained enough in this first one but that's probably because this book is more of a third or a fourth of what I would consider a whole book.
I enjoyed Taylee's quick wit and comebacks and wanted her to release the tears she held back after Dalmari's death. Raised practically since birth, 17 years with someone like a father warrants tears at their death. Waiting for the funeral or by herself, I think she needs to let it out.
Interestingly brief read with some hiccups for me. Not sure if I'll read the next one.
Have tissues ready, this book had me crying from the get go. 4 times in 8 chapters, I just felt for Taylee, and the shock of the last revelation, oh my.
Drea's have a ton of energy and super cool abilities, for example Taylee can control people by taking over their brain. They are hunted by Rygons who feed on their energy and then inherit their abilities. The difference is that Rygons are really strong, so add some mental abilities and they can cause a big problem. This is where the Kembers step in, they are physically strong and also have a physical ability like controlling water or fire... Kembers protect the Dreas from Rygons.
Taylee is a Drea and her Kember is killed but she believes it was another Kember who did it and she is hell bent on revenge. Standing in her way is Aiden, her new Kember who is determined to keep her safe and maintain an emotional distance. Which is difficult with Taylee since she is just a swirling ball of emotion, mostly anger, but who can really blame her. They start investigating and discover some strange things about who the bad guys might be, Taylee's parentage and why Delmari hid so much from her.
I really enjoyed this, I thought Taylee was a good character and I liked her dynamic with Aiden. The story was original and well paced in my opinion. I would have liked a little more detail on their society, like, besides stopping the Rygons from getting too powerful why exactly do the Kembers devote their lives to protecting Drea's...
So first off the main lead is far too violent. i love that she is fiesty it makes for an interesting read but could she tone it down a tad. I don't want a weak moaning child but she is just too aggressive all of the time.
Aside from that, I have been really struggling to read a book when at home. Its sort of like a book reading slump but it just happens when I am home. I got in from work where I started this and I kept thinking I must finish this book. And that is most likely due to how good the story line is and how well the characters are written. It ended so quickly for me I may have to start on the next book now!
It wasn't bad but the story is taking a long time to unwrap and Taylee is a bit of a screwed up character. She doesn't really have a balance to her, despite the author trying to find it. I was pretty disappointed with the ending, it ended way too suddenly and not in an 'OMG, I want the next novel NOW' cliffhanger. I am curious about the second novel, to see if the story and characters develop better and at a much faster pace.
Taylee is frustrating. Utterly irritating. Anyhow, the plot is okay but doesn't really get anywhere, which was also frustrating. As soon as the plot starts to look like it's going to move forward, the book ends.
wow, I'm so looking forward to knowing how this storyline is going to pan out. I like the characters and will be looking for the second book in this series so I can find out.
