Bev Ransom thinks her life can't get any worse after her father dies unexpectedly. At least she has her friend and employer, Rene Lawson, an intriguing older woman whose past is shrouded in mystery.
Then, on a day like any other, Bev goes to work and by evening, Rene is dead.
Devastated and unable to let go of another loved one, Bev becomes obsessed with unraveling the mysteries that surrounded Rene. When she uncovers a twenty-year old secret, Bev's world is shattered. Is there anyone she can trust?
Born in a rougher section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, (and there were several of those areas when I was growing up. I hear they’ve cleaned Pittsburgh up very nicely, now. Haven’t been back in many years.) I soon learned how to make myself invisible. If you tend to be on the smaller side, this is a very good talent. As a result, I got to observe people in their myriad of attitudes and emotions.
They fascinated me.
In self-defense against loneliness, I learned to read very early, and to write. My first story was written in pencil on those tablets for little kids with huge spaces between lines. It was a story about a lost dog. Do you ever forget your first?
Ever since that day, I have been creating alternate realities. Fortunately, my life has been anything except traditional, and therefore, I have never run out of stories to tell.
I lived on the road for several years, was homeless a few times, have worked non-traditional jobs (and a very few traditional jobs), and have walked many dark roads and city streets.
Currently, I live on a 12 acre wildlife/wild bird/indigenous plant habitat that my wife of 25 years and I have created. During a single year, we host over 68 different species of birds, and many different animals.
When I am not either reading or writing, I love to hike, take photographs, work with my dogs, tend the land, horseback ride, travel, learn new things, and recently, I acquired a motorcycle, so I am having a great deal of fun learning to ride.
Whenever I have the opportunity, I also search for the perfect chocolate. There are many good chocolates in the world, but I am convinced that there is a “perfect one”. Have to eat a lot of chocolates while I am researching!
Great book, Ms Walksfar has a way of story telling that sucks you in from the very beginning, her characters are people you feel for, people who you want to the best for. Some people I know have the habit of criticizing me when I show emotions over characters from stories that move me, telling me their not real, well hello if they can show emotions while watching the damn Hallmark channel, then I should be allowed my own feelings to come over me when I'm engrossed in my books. This book is like that, it grips you, it makes you angry, it makes you cry and it makes you laugh. Good job Ms Walksfar keep them coming.
Wow, just wow! I'm almost speechless, but honestly, I generally can find some worthy words. Seldom have I read a book with characters so richly developed, evolved and three dimensional....as well as intertwined in some manner. This family drama, filled with secrets at every turn is also loaded with a lot of insights and surprising friendships. The story is told from each person's unique and individual perspective and gives deep meaning to things we often take for granted. Families and relationships can be very complex and Aya has portrayed all of the characters beautifully. By the time I was halfway through the book, I literally felt as though I knew each one individually and personally. Loved this book, one of the best I've read this year!
I was pleasantly surprised by this read. Truly was not sure what the story would entail. Took a while to get through, not sure if that was me or the length of the story. I will say this though, it is worth the read.
After Rene Lawson's death, her friend and employee Bev Ransom is devastated. Soon she starts to learn Rene's secrets, secrets that relate directly to Bev. Chapters from the viewpoint of others who loved Rene reveal some of those secrets to the reader before Bev learns them, making this an even more powerful story.
I usually say "great book". But I have to admit I struggled with the beginning. Almost put it down. I found it a little hard to follow at first. But I persevered. So many of the topics are hard to listen to. Can't say I enjoyed this book, but I felt it in my heart.
