In the shadows of the night, there exists a band of warriors--a group of vampires, known as the Alpha Council. Their formidable leader, Stephan von Haas, has vowed to protect not only his kind but the humans existing alongside them. His duty comes before all else--until a sassy blonde saunters into his life.
When a sensual, dark-haired stranger walks into Katrina Spencer's life, he stirs her deepest desires and sweeps her into a world beyond her wildest dreams. But when Katrina is targeted by Stephan's enemies, reality shifts into something violent and deadly, as she is thrust into a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and vengeance is coming for her.
Together they will confront an extraordinary destiny of peril, passion, and dark pleasures. But when one horrid mistake brings retribution, their love may pay the price.
Brenda Sparks has always loved all things spooky and enjoys incorporating paranormal elements in her writing. She refuses to allow pesky human constraints to get in the way of telling the story. Luckily the only thing limiting her stories is her imagination. Her characters are strong, courageous, and she adores spending time with them in their imaginary world.
Her idea of a perfect day is one spent in front of a computer with a hot cup of coffee, her fingers flying over the keys to send her characters off on their latest adventure.
I've been on a vampire romance reading kick lately and I've had this on my tablet for quote awhile. Overall, I enjoyed it. The characters were fully developed, the action was believable and the romance was spot-on. The only issue I had was the slow beginning. I know this is a first book in a series but I found myself wishing there was more action to start with.
In this origin story Stephan Von Haas leads the Alpha Council, a warrior brotherhood that protects humans. Gage & Andrea Lilos are being investigated for hunting humans when tragedy occurs. Though his lady love, dancer Katrina Spencer loves Stephan as much as he loves her, she does not want to be a vampire nor be a meal for one. With this insurmountable issue looming over them, Kat & Stephan have very few options to make their relationship succeed.
I'm torn on a rating for this read, I disliked the pacing and the stilted speech which read rather slow and formal for my taste. But I enjoyed the characters themselves, the conflict in the storyline provided great visuals for some scenes and the read overall had a bit of suspense that gave the correct amount of thrill. Though I liked both leads they felt too stilted and I identified more with the secondary characters here who felt more natural to me. I also thought the story that was there was fine but as a stand alone thread it may have been better served in a novella. While not a perfect read, quite a bit worked well enough for me to look for another installment.
There is so much to enjoy about Alpha Mine, it's hard to know where to begin.
First and foremost, this is a solid vampire novel with plenty of action as two groups of vampires are at loggerheads over how humans should be viewed and treated.
Interspersed with this is a love story that not only steams up the pages but will make you go, "Awwwwww!" as you read about the head vampire, Stephan, wooing his heartmate.
Last but not least is the cast of characters and Brenda Sparks shines as she creates unique personalities for each. Most notable are the three main characters - Marcus is a flippant jokester though loyal to the end; Stephan is the no-nonsense, level-headed, battle-ready Alpha vampire but peel away the gruff exterior and there is a layer of tenderness and love just waiting to be found; and Kat, the object of Stephan's desire, a strong woman able to keep the Alpha in check.
In all, it was a great book and has me wanting more from the Alpha Council Chronicles!
There are good vampires and bad vampires. The bad ones like to hunt humans because that's what humans are for. The good ones try to stop them. Stephan and Marcus (the good guys) team up with feisty dancer Katrina as they battle Gage and Andrea, vampires who don't care much for humans. Alpha Mine is a delightful love story interwoven with a great suspense tale that will keep you turning pages.
Two of my favorite scenes: A slightly different than normal blood exchange in the Red Rock Canyon. I'm not going to say anymore but trust me, this scene is delicious.
The battle at Stephan's house that has dire consequences. I don't want to spoil this one either, but it's a heart-pounding action sequence.
Ms. Sparks has a nice start to her Alpha Council Chronicles. I look forward to the next one!
I call this story dynamic for three main reasons: the suspense, the love story, and the characters which the author masterfully pulled together. I thought the drama in this book was original and well-constructed. Pitting very competent vampires against each other created a strong and believable conflict that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The love story was hot, romantic, impossible, heartbreaking, sweet, everything it should be. I definitely rooted for this couple to end up together.
My big thing - I can’t say enough about the characters in this book. They LIT UP the pages in a fresh, fun way. And it wasn’t only the three main characters, but the two main villains were just as enjoyable to read about. A wonderful story by a great author. Suspense abound, romance reigns on this fun and delightful journey. I recommend it to any vampire lover!
This book captured my interest by the first chapter. Easy reading but you can’t stop reading because you want to know what happens next. I can’t wait to read the next book
1.5 I had a very visceral reaction to the end of this book. It went something like this: I turned off my kindle, tossed it off to the side, took a deep breath and said, out loud, "Thank God it's finally finished!" Without consciously realizing I was doing, about 30% into the novel, I started checking my progress bar and being repeatedly shocked and dismayed to find I was only 30%, 45%, 60%, 75%, etc done. This novel seemed to go on forever and not in a good way.
I'll be fair and say the actual writing isn't bad and the dialogue is readable. It's not the hot mess some indie/SP books I've read are. But it REALLY needed and editor that would have encouraged the author to cut about a third of it out, tighten it up a lot, and solidify the characters to match the tone of the book. Because the book is too long, too many of its pages are dedicated to unimportant, non-plot relevant events and the characters, who are supposed to be badassed act like children. They play charades, dress up for Halloween and giggle a lot. This created a jarring and unpleasant collision of innocent child-like scenes followed by rape scenes, which I assume were the author's attempt to be gritty and edgy. (It wasn't.)
And I'd like to address these rape scenes, which if I'm fair, were more like rape references. But for the point I'm making is same-same. I have no problem encountering rape in a book if it serves a purpose in the plot. But I have found in many, many books that authors use rape as a shortcut to clumsily telegraph to the reader, "This character is exceptionally bad." This offends me both as a woman who is just tired of having rape thrown in such a high proportion of romance/erotic novels but also as a reader who is just tired of encountering the same writing over and over and over again.
I promise there are millions of other ways for men to be bad men. At this point in my reading career, when I encounter the sort of rape used here in this book, I interpret it as a sign that an author has been lazy and refused to think any farther than, "Here's a trope that you will effortlessly recognize and know what it means." Telling your reader you are lazy is not a good thing.
This is especially true in Alpha Mine, because the rapes contributed NOTHING to the plot. The character committing them was a minor side character, a minion. Establishing his evilness was beside the point. In fact, it countered the point, as it caused him to overshadow the true villain. He was later disposed of in an offhand manner, further establishing him as an unimportant character in the book. Thus, further emphasizing that his need to be established as evil was unimportant and therefore his raping of at least two women unneeded in the book.
Thus, to make my point clear, the author included two raped woman for absolutely no reason at all. Worse than that, for a reason that served to make the book even weaker than it already was. While rape is just one more thing that could show up in a book, much like murder or milkshakes or mad cows, it is extremely overused and should be considered before being included in a story. Sparks has just spectacularly demonstrated why.
So, I was put off on several fronts by this book. The plot was too loose, the characters undeveloped and shallow, the tone contradictory, the female nothing more than an object that spurs the men to action, and inordinate amount of time was dedicated to what sleazy outfit she was wearing and how men reacted to her in it, there was magic sex that fixed a problem that the effort of five people couldn't solve, the conclusion was anticlimactic and the whole thing was too long in general. This book has many good reviews. People like it. I'm just not one of them.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The concept was original and the story was good but I had a hard time connecting with the characters.
Kat was attacked seven years ago by vampires and Marcus, a vampire, saved her. We move to the present where Marcus and Kat are living together. She knows about vampires but is sworn to secrecy. Marcus and Kat are the best of friends, living together while Kat dances at a club Marcus owns.
Then all of a sudden, Marcus’s sire Stephan, a vampire he hasn’t seen in decades, comes home. Turns out it’s Stephan’s condo and he wants to know why Marcus has invited a human to live there and how she knows about the existence of vampires. Marcus explains what happened seven years ago but Stephan doesn’t think Kat can be trusted. Marcus diligently defends Kat and she ends up staying at Stephan’s condo and keeping her memories intact, for now.
That same night Kat has a horrible migraine and Stephan is the only one that can sooth it. Turns out they both are hot for each other but Stephan doesn’t know what he wants more, her body or her blood. But Stephan made a promise to Marcus that he wouldn’t bite Kat, because of her attack all those years ago she is adamantly against being a “donor.”
So the three spend lots of time together and it feels like this really awkward love triangle. Marcus loves her but is jealous of Stephan’s feelings for her. Kat loves Marcus as a friend but imagines her, Marcus and Stephan having a threesome, which I thought was odd. If she has feelings for Stephan and only friend feelings for Marcus, why does she want them both? Turns out she only wants Stephan.
The story goes along and to make a longer story short, Kat doesn’t want to be turned into a vampire and Stephan, being a vampire enforcer for their kind, is forced to make the decision to scrub her memories rather than let a human, such as Kat, live with the knowledge of vampires.
The story is pretty good but I just wasn’t sold on the characters. Call me crazy, but I felt the psychology behind Kat, Marcus and Stephan’s actions had me more confused than entertained. Please don’t let my view on the characters dissuade anyone from picking up the book. The plot was unique but it just wasn’t for me.

Alpha Mine was an absolutely fascinating book. The most intriguing part, if you really sit and think while you read, is the potential fluidity of who the “bad guy” is. What makes a person bad? Circumstance, the situation, a history, a misspoken word, or taking away a piece of someone? The real bad guy is Gage and Andrea, but I hope you take the time to consider rationale and drive as you read this story- and really ponder what makes someone the villain.
Katrina “Kat” Spencer is a dancer in Vegas, introduced into the world of vampires several years ago by a brutal attack. Saved by Marcus, they make a life together as good friends, roommates, and protector/ward. All this changes when Marcus’s Sire, Stephen Von Haas comes on the scene. Instantly intrigued by Kat, they begin a dance of courtship.
There is a cool cast of other Alpha vampires, and I can’t wait to read their stories…I’m hoping they all find their Heartmates pretty soon. I can’t wait to read Michael’s especially. Will his actions ever catch up to him? The only part of the story that gave me pause was how easily Kat forgave Stephan- I’d be pretty pissed off when I realized what happened!
Regardless, I’d strongly recommend this book to lovers of vampires, paranormal romance, and a good story. I really urge you to sit and think about the characters of the novel as you read, because there is a depth here that you don’t find in many romance novels. In my head, the debate about the villain is ongoing. Read the book, and maybe we can have a chat about it!
Super old vampire gets interested in the human friend of his vampire 'son'. Marcus saved the sweet and sexy Katrina Spencer seven years ago when she was being killed by a group of vampires. She knows too much but Marcus trusts the young human woman and wants more with her. When Marcus's sire, Stephan von Haas comes to Vegas, things get shaken up because of his interest in Kat. Stephan woos the sweet and strong Kat until they become more then just lovers and friends. The forced brainwashing was such a bad idea from the beginning so it comes as no surprise that it just makes a lot of trouble. Everyone, especially the vampires are liars with too many secrets. The only folks that are mostly honest are Stephan and Marcus, but it might be because they can read each other's minds. Lots of violence and torture with a sweet romance in the back ground. I didn't like this as much as Dark Lover but it was still a decent story about warrior vampires with a human lover. There were no gay characters at all in this world which seems a little unrealistic for folks that live for so long. 294 pages and kindle freebie 2 stars
Kat is enthralled out of a night club and attacked by vampires, seven years later she's living with her best friend, saviour and vampire Marcus. The apartment they share belongs to Marcus's sire Stephan, an ancient vampire and alpha who turns up unannounced, the attraction between Kat and Stephan is instant and no matter how hard they fight it they can't ignore it. This is a light vampire romance, it has some interesting characters and I wanted to like it more than I actually did. It was moving along ok but then it just in my opinion fell apart, options were put forward one of which was ridiculous but of course that's the way they go, it felt contrived and didn't work at all for me. I also didn't like the constant alpha references, we know they're alphas we don't need to be told over 80 times but it was the switching that got me one second it's Stephan, then the alpha leader, then Vlad, then the alpha, it was weird yes call them alphas as a collective but anyway I'm rambling, I really liked Demetri although if I'm being honest probably not enough to actually buy the book, if there is one which I presume there will be.
Alpha Mine is HOT HOT HOT!!! *Swoon* Love me some HOT Vampire’s!!! Katrina was attacked by Vampire’s, Marcus (One of many HOT Vampire’s in this book) saves Katrina, and promises that he will always protect her, and vow’s that no one will drink from her, they move in together. Years later, Stephan shows up (Well he does own the place, that Katrina and Marcus live in). Stephan is skeptical of Katrina first, because he isn’t sure if she can keep their secret. But after a while, Stephan finds himself attracted to Katrina. I felt so bad for Marcus, because he is so sweet, and you know that he wants to be more than friends with Katrina, but it just never works out. Several times, I wanted to pull him out of the book and hug him. But on the other hand, Katrina is one LUCKY woman, to be living with 2 HOT VAMPIRE’S!!! After, making a horrible mistake, and something I think Stephan regrets doing. Everything is falling apart, because he wants to keep Katrina safe, but he knows that he might have to let her go. This book will keep your toes, and you will feel the HOTNESS!!!
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I didn't know what to expect.
Alpha Mine is about Vampires and humans. The story starts 7 years in the past. Katrina is attacked by Vampires when she is leaving her job at a club. Another Vampire rescues her and heals and protects her. Katrina knows there are vampires and is friends with Marcus, the one who saved her.
Now it is 7 years later and Marcus and Kat are living together as friends. Marcus' creator arrives unexpectedly in Las Vegas. His name is Stephan. Marcus and Kat live in Stephan's penthouse. Stephan learns about Kat and feels a connection to her.
The Vampires look for the heartmate. When they find their hearmate they love them for eternity. The way they find out if a human is a vampires hearmate is by drinking the humans blood. I loved Stephan, Marcus, and the other Alpha's that we met in this book. They don't believe in hunting humans. They will fight for humans and protect them.
Well....I will get to the negative first, this book did not get off to a good start for me. There were many things in the beginning of this story I did not like at all(these are my preferences so I won't name them to hinder another readers opinion) and I wasn't actually going to continue reading this book! POSITIVE, I'm really, really glad I did because once I got past those initial sections I loved it! I loved Stephan & Katrina's(Kat) story, their chemistry, the love they felt for each other was expressed so well, the humor, awww and the heartwrenching heartache that had me crying like a baby, the friendships and the rest of the 'Alpha' characters! I really loved it and I'm really looking forward to book 2!
OMG.... Emotional tear jerking story. This story had me reeling at the author. I was screaming how could you...why....that is too painful. I had to stop reading at a certain point in this story for I was crying. I ended up walking a way for about an hour (long enough to cook dinner) then I had to finish it. There had to have been something I was missing. I was glad I did finish this story. It was well worth the tears that I cried. Even if I wanted to "ring" someone's neck.
Kat is attacked by vampires in an alley and then rescued by another vampire, Marcus. Stephan is Marcus' sire. Marcus owns a club in Vegas and Kat works as a dancer there. Marcus has vowed to protect Kat from all vampires, including Stephan. This is a well-written, fast read. Stephan formed the Alpha Council to protect the world from rogue vampires. This book is really steamy. Paranormal romance, vampire stories are definitely one of my favorite type of books, so I was really enjoying this one. 4 stars.
Not a bad book, especially for a freebie. I enjoyed the fact that Kat and Stephan's romance was for once not tortured. They just came to it kind of naturally. I loved Michael and was a bit sad for him. The way the book kind of wrapped itself up quickly was a bit disappointing. I thought the kidnapping part could have been more dramatic too. Overall a decent book. Would read more about the other Alphas. Especially Vlad...he seems interesting.
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this series and would have given it 4 stars except there were parts that were predictable. I don't want to give anything away so I can't go into detail but I will say once Gage and his mate Andrea we're introduced and you learned a bit about them, you could pretty much figure out what was going to happen. That said, the story held my interest and I would definitely read the next book in the series which I am assuming is about Marcus who I loved.
I am a paranormal romance fanatic and I love me a great vampire read. this has all the makings of a great vampire book/series. with the diverse way of how things went to the character dynamic. I thought the characters were great and had good chemistry together and had just the right amount of suspense. it just seemd to drag on a bit. overall a good book would recommend it.
At first, I thought this story might turn out okay. But, Stephan came off as a guy of our time and not the time of a 5 hundred year old. The one that ran his house seemed really childish. And this all in the first few chapters. I just did not feel like reading on.
I always love stories with the supernatural and regular human being. Love the characters good and bad ones. I still felt sadness when Gage lost his life mate despite their evilness
