Separate Ways #3

Moving Mountains

Rate this book
It’s easier to move a mountain than escape the past.

After the ultimate betrayal results in the death of his lover, Jamie Mainwaring looks to the past for answers, and discovers his entire life is a lie. When uncovering the truth leads to a more devastating loss, there’s only one place he can turn for understanding.

When former-detective Remington left the police department, he never looked back. Now, his glory-stealing ex-boss is dead, leaving Remy’s real name scratched in the dirt at the brutal murder scene.

Two years ago, Miguel Rojas left New York in the back of his best friend’s car, in real danger of falling victim to the same addictions that left his twin sister in bed with the drug lord he’d been deep undercover investigating. When she shows up looking to make amends, misplaced guilt mixed with curiosity open old wounds.

While Remy returns to his police department roots to track down a killer, Miggy and Jamie team up to find the bones from Miggy’s past and bury them once and for all.

The truth shall set you free—except when the past is determined to claim you.

This is a very strong entry in Laura Harner's "Separate Ways" series, which started with our main characters -- Jamie and Remy -- hitting it off and breaking up in book 1 of the series, and then continued with Remy pairing off with his best friend of twenty years and companion of the past two -- Miggy, an absolutely wonderful man. As we begin the third book, those of us who are rooting for Jamie and Remy are faced with a terrible dilemma: How do we cheer for the couple who were essentially together for a fling, when the other couple built a life and a family together for two years, and finally took the step of becoming intimate with each other over the course of the past few months? Can we trust our sense that Remy really is in love with Jamie, and can we believe Jamie when he says that he is still in love with Remy, when all they seem to have is the possibility of something real? Especially when we know that Remy and Miggy have something that -- while imperfect -- is both real and pretty darned good?

Well, we don't have a great deal of time to explore those questions because Harner starts us off with a bang. After learning some pretty shocking news and experiencing a devastating event, Jamie goes to Phoenix to see Remy and Miggy because he is at a loss -- he has no one else in the world to whom he can turn in order to process it. (In other words, you turn to your loved ones when you're grieving, and that meant he needed to see Remy, whether he admits it or or not.) While there, ghosts from Miggy's and Remy's pasts rise to the surface, and all three of them turn to the task of trying to sort them out. The results are both surprising and not surprising, and they push the story arc forward in a massive way (MAJOR spoiler ahead): .

When we move into the final book in the series, I hope that Harner explores some of the issues that I set out in the first paragraph. I think that she has written an unusual series that tackles love, loss, loyalty, and friendship in an incredibly mature way -- Jamie is in love with Remy, and Remy is probably in love with Jamie, but both of them respect Remy's relationship with Miggy, and all three of them value their friendship with each other. Most importantly, though, these men are old-fashioned: they understand and keep faith with the concept of honor. It doesn't completely stretch the bounds of realism, though: Jamie spends the book keeping his promise to help with the investigation that rocks Miggy's world, but he knows that he will have to leave at the end because watching Remy and Miggy deepen their relationship will simply hurt too much. So there is honesty, too, in the way she depicts these characters. The best thing, though, is the way she allows Remy to grow as a person in each book of the series. He understands love and the meaning of family in a way that he did not know before, and both of these men were crucial in helping him get to that point. The final line of the book, then, is an absolute game changer, in so many different ways.

I enjoyed this novel tremendously. If you've read the first two books, you've committed. Get on this. Read it right away. If you haven't read the series, it's a wonderfully pleasant way to lose a day.

I'm stunned by the revelations in this book.

The first two had me shouting "OH HELL NO" so many times. I thought by the third book, things would have calmed down. Not so much.

Laura Harner books are like a roller coaster. Ups and downs are prevalent, but those loops have you leaving your stomach (and heart) everywhere along the ride.

This book changes everything. I laughed. I cried. Then I cried some more. I got very wrapped up in these characters. Each and every one of them owned a piece of my heart. Now I'm left gasping for breath, waiting for the ride to come to its conclusion.

You NEED to read the first two books before you tackle this one. The first story, "Continental Divide" is free, so you have a great starting point.

Enjoy, then come back and we can commiserate together.

Oh God, here I am completely without nails, another cliffhanger AND the death of one of my fave characters...and no, I'm not telling you who it is!! But Laura, pretty please, , let us have a happy ending in the next book...my nerves can't take much more...they've GOT to get together again!! 5 stars and a huge ...except for the cliffhanger ending ...I was so disappointed, but I'm daft enough to wait for book 4 of course!!

I'll take the easy way out and link to another review, but Salsera said everything perfectly here:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

And now I'm majorly pissed at Mrs. Harner, 'cause I'll have to wait God knows how long for the next book to see how things will play out in the end. Am I biting the edge of my desk in impatience? Noooooooooooooo...

Write, Ma'am!

Not much he could do about the early morning BJ mouth.

It’s weird. At some point in time during the first two book reviews, I uttered the phrase, “Oh hell no!” For this review, I’m going to step it up just a touch. “Oh hell the fuck no she didn’t!”

For the third of the four book series, Laura Harner does not pull any punches. She starts out hard and the hits keep coming at a rapid pace.

For reasons you’ll have to read to find out, Jamie has fled England to America in hopes that his friend, Remy, and Remy’s partner, Miguel (Miggy) can help him. Back in the States, Remy is embroiled in a case that brings up some very unpleasant memories, and Miggy…well, Miggy has family issues when a relative shows up on his doorstep. Toss in Remy and Miggy’s ‘son’, Toby, and you’re already seeing the fraying on the fabric of their lives.

The past plays a big part in this book. Jamie, Remy, and Miggy all deal with it in a different way. Jamie seeks help from his friends. Remy swaggers in and jumps headlong. Miggy goes to protect his loved ones.

I’m not going to say a lot about this story (because I refuse to give away anything), other than it’s a total game changer. By the time the book is over, no one is left unscathed and no life is left untouched. Laura Harner weaves an intricate tale that forces you to ask ‘why’? The answers don’t come easily, and they’re not going to satisfy everyone, but they were the only answers that would truly make sense in the lives of these men.

Laura, I’d like to make a request for book four, please. No more “HELL NO” moments. Let me keep a shred of my dignity. Or not. Whatever path you write, I’m gonna follow.

I can't rate this book. First of all it is written by one of my favorite authors. I adore this series, but now I am unable to even rate this due to the ending. The entire book is amazing till the end. Maybe I am the one who doesn't get it, but I can't remember hating an ending as much as this one. I did not expect an HEA, but I could hope for one that was not like this.

I may reconsider reviewing the first 3/4 of the book, but right now it is too fresh and too disappointing. I feel bad about it, but that's the way I feel.

In all fairness, I hope this doesn't put anyone off of the book or series. These are after all my feelings and what I took away from reading it.

*** After separating myself from this for a week or so, I have decide to review it. I added 5 stars to the first 3/4 of the book, to 1 star for the ending, divided it and came up with 3 stars as overall.

The beginning and middle involve Jamie coming to spend some time with Remy and Migs after the death of his mother. Remy is hauled back into the police department to be part of an investigation of the death of one of the ranking officers in the department. While Remy is busy, Jamie and Migs get together to investigate when Migs was undercover in New York. There are a lot of questions, he wants to find the answers to. It's a great mystery, and it is intriguing watching the three men try to reconcile their relationships. Loved this till the end. ***

*********After almost a year, I have revisited the book. I have changed my rating because, this series is to great not too give it five stars.

4.5*

This one was even better, but I can’t believe that ending. My heart is broken, I don’t know how to feel, is all so not what I hoped. I dare say Mig was the character I liked the most is this series, no doubt.
I’m so glad this series is complete! I’m diving right into book 4.-

Oh, this was so much harder to read than the first two books! At the end of Oceans Apart I couldn't wait to find out how Jamie was going to move on. He was betrayed by his lover as well the organization he worked for, and the man he had loved for years, Remy, was involved in a new relationship that Jamie could only support. I felt like he had shouldered so much pain that he deserved to have happiness, and I wanted it to happen in this book!

But this book starts with another blow to Jamie. He finds out that his mother, whom he always resented for trying to control his life, has lied to him from day one and he is not actually Lord Mainwaring, but is a second son. In anger he tries to force her into admitting it in front of his older brother, and she dies of a heart attack. In the first two books, Ms. Harner has laid the groundwork that Jamie never wanted to be a peer of the realm anyway, and with this convenient plot twist, she frees him of this responsibility (as well as all ties to England), while providing him with enough angst and pain to drive him to Remy.

He goes to Phoenix, and finds that Remy and Miggy have moved forward with their relationship, and now have a happy home with Toby, whom they consider a son. Jamie feels like an outsider, wonders why he came, and prepares to leave when again, conveniently, a case appears that requires Remy to spend much of his time away from Miggy, and Miggy needs Jamie's help. The evolution of the investigation was a bit confusing to me, so I lost interest it in and didn't follow well, but the upshot was that Remy was frequently away from home. And Miggy, who has always been aware of Remy's attraction to Jamie, starts again questioning whether he is gay, and what he wants and expects from his and Remy's relationship. While I didn't really follow the case and didn't truly understand it until the final wrap up, I loved reading about the character's thoughts about themselves and each other, their attractions, their guilt, their motivations. . . That all was real and interesting. I was annoyed at the way the case and other situations just magically pushed the characters into the correct proximity for all this angst to develop and be resolved -- and I normally have no problem suspending belief in reality while reading books -- but this just seemed too contrived for me. And is the only reason I don't give this 5 stars. The character development was amazing.

Now I just hope that the next book brings about an HEA. I have to say that this book has pulled me into the series much more strongly than the others did, and I will definitely be buying the next installment!

I redeemed myself by finally reading the second installment of the 'Separate Ways' series and now I've kept that trend by jumping, fairly quickly, into this latest release, which is book three. I adore Laura Harner, but after finishing this story, book four better be coming out in the next month. Just saying. I honestly didn't think anything could get better than the first two stories, but I know better than to doubt Ms. Harner, and as usual, she came through. Again. Thank goodness.

It's been a weird three months for Jamie since Ryan's betrayal and his return home. Now he's discovered a family secret that has thrown himself and his brother into a huge upheaval, and the repercussions from Jamie confronting his mother are disastrous. And send Jamie running to the one man he trusts, Remy. It's quite a morning for still-new lovers, Remy and Miggy. First Jamie shows up and they invite him to stay. Remy gets a call from the police department that his hated former captain has been killed and they need to see Remy at the station. And, last but not least, Miggy's twin sister shows up out of the blue. Miggy hasn't seen Maria since he left New York where he was working undercover for the drug dealer that hooked Maria on drugs and had her prostituting for her habit. I'd have gone back to bed at that point.

Needless to say, there is a lot going on in this story, but the underlying theme is the past. We each have one and it shapes the person we become. I was worried about Jamie rushing to Remy's side, but it was great to see that Jamie didn't really look at Remy in the same way. Somewhere between the heat and lust of two years ago, and the Caribbean cruise assignment, Jamie and Remy became friends. Jamie definitely still battles longing and an attraction, and probably love, but the man Remy was two years ago isn't the man he is now. Remy and Miggy have worked hard to have a life together and a family. Remy is settled and happy with a home, a lover, and their son, Toby. No longer is Remy the loner cowboy. He and Miggy have something strong and true, and Jamie would never interfere in that. And, Jamie has realized that after thirty-six years on the planet, Remy and Miggy are his only true friends. But, even though Remy loves Miggy, there is still a hint of the attraction he and Jamie shared, a bit of the 'what if' they both can't stop thinking of.

Right now I would dearly love to share the outcomes of this story. But, I can't. Why? Because they are giant spoilers and I can't do that to a fellow reader. I'm just going to quote a fellow reviewer and say "Laura Harner ~ oh HELL no, you didn't!". Unfortunately, she did. I can give a warning and say I cried. A lot. Red eyes, snot, tissues ~ the whole works. So be prepared. You'll either love this book or hate it. I loved it. Now, hurry up Ms. Harner, please. I really, really, really need book four. Soon.

This third book in the trilogy was--I can't say much because it will all be spoilers.
I can say that this is NOT a stand alone book. To get the full frontal emotional impact, read both the first and second book first. I'll also say that both Remy and Jamie are hell on partners.

The very busy, twisty plot(s) stayed in the background, giving character development center stage.
While the book had a complete ending, there is still room for a followup book. I'm hoping it comes quickly as I am ready to see how these guys can screw up their relationships this time around.

I started not to review this book because it...well, it pissed me off. No, not the 'pissed' as in the shock other readers have expressed. I had read spoilers, so I was not shocked and I might even have predicted it. But I WAS frustrated with particular events of the story, even though I knew they were going to happen.

.

My own personal disappointments aside, though, I felt I couldn't refuse to review the book because---well---it was just too damn good. It just was.

Ms. Harner has a gift for writing men, getting inside them. And not at their prettiest always, either. Just true-to-life, gritty, what-you-see-is-what-you-get MEN. And I love that.

Miggy, as usual, was the shining point in this installment. He and his sister, who has shown up unexpectedly in his life are the jewels in this story. The sister is, I think, the most powerful element in the tale. She is real. SO real. If you've ever known druggies and their lies, their manipulative ways, you recognize her right off the bat. She is impeccably portrayed. You want to believe she might just be clean, she might just be recovered. But something deep down tells you not to get your hopes up. A beautiful job by Ms. Harner!

While Remy and Jamie are---ayyy---how can I describe them?---so lost and kind of wandering about in search of each other like headless bodies, searching for what's right under their noses. Are those boys ever going to get it right? In this installment, they're going deeper into themselves and the reader hopes, hopes, hopes they're mere steps away from coming to terms with their pasts and being whole once more.

Again, there may have been some elements in the story I didn't cotton to. But my mission as a reader is to accept the heart of the author that's been exposed, not to question if that heart is in agreement with mine. Especially if the book is so well written and the story is so good. This gem, "Moving Mountains", was both.

There isn't a lot I can say about Moving Mountains without spoiling the book. I can say that I am very glad that I waited for the fourth book to be released before reading books two and three; especially three. I'm still reeling from this one. A lot of loose ends from the previous two books get wrapped up here and I'm glad there is a fourth book, because it wouldn't be right for Remy and Jamie to magically be together right now.

It was interesting to see Jamie and Miggy actually become friends. I think it was all Miggy could do to not push Remy toward Jamie, even now. Miggy and Remy, even after several months of a physical relationship, had not even talked about the changes of their relationship. That kind of struck me as weird. Miggy, while insisting he wasn't gay, when pressed, obviously did have feelings beyond friendship for Remy. And the same holds true for Remy. Even though he still doesn't feel like he deserves love, he knows he has it and he does not want to let it go. Maybe that's why he never talked to Miggy about how he felt. It would make everything too real.

So, on to book four, where I hope to read about the HEA I desperately want Remy and Jamie to finally get.

What a Roller Coaster.....and ANOTHER cliff hanger and the worst part is waiting on the next book to be released....OMG WHY do I do this to myself!!!

That ending those last 3 words nearly killed me......

I'm not gonna write a review per say just some thoughts and observations...

* From the beginning of this series I wanted to see Jamie and Remy together
* I know Remy loved Miggy but he wasn't IN LOVE with him....I hope in the next book we can see him realize and make peace with this. It's the only way he can even attempt to get Jamie back
*Tobes, I love this kid and was so proud of him, but he needs to get his head out his ass, Remy needs to help him see that Jamie would never try to replace Miggy. I know he was hurt and grieving but damn it I am President of team Jamie and he was being really mean.....

So far I am really enjoying this series, a recommended read (but wait until book 4 is out if you hate being left hanging)

I Can’t Anymore

After my book break I steeled my feels and got reading.

Messages sent to Kristen: “I'm doing it. I'm about to read the book. God I'll never be ready. Rip off the band-aid.”

The third book in this series made me feel like maybe all of my favorite characters would potentially come together in love and happiness, united as one cohesive unit.

HA. I am a FOOL.

Jamie has had some rough revelations and his generally happy demeanor has taken a serious hit. He goes to visit Remy, shattered and hurting. He needs some TLC and something to keep him occupied. Will he get it? Eh… for a bit.

Miggy’s past is causing issues, so he and Jamie team up to do some detecting and get stuff done and start to get close. Friendship potential! Maybe more? Throuple??? In my dreams.

Remy is digging into a mystery and doesn’t want to deal with the whole Miggy Jamie situation. He is emotionally unavailable and sexually attracted to everyone. BAD REMY, BAD!

Stuff happens, I cried forever, but I thought that maybe with the final scene things might be OK? There is a potential of a HFN for some of the characters?

If you need a short reprieve, do NOT immediately start the fourth book. Take a break and breathe for a bit. Then dive into book 4 for one last hurrah of rampaging feels.

4.5 Stars

This one is so good.

I had given it 4 stars after my first read but I think I'm going to better that with 4.5 stars because this book was pretty good.

This book is off to a great start when we finally learn why Jamie is the one with the title even though he is the second son and things just unravel from there.

I really loved Miguel in this one. We finally come to know him as an individual separate from Remy as he and Jamie try to figure out why Maria is in Phoenix. He is also grappling with his sexuality and what his relationship with Remy means in terms of his sexuality and for the most part he is on the right track.

Jamie is a mess and I love him so much that it's really hard to see him come so undone. I really hope he finds himself. Remy and Jamie start this book at opposite ends of the grief spectrum and somehow make their way to the middle by the end of the book.

I have to give this series credit for managing to infuse entire books with the awareness of the UST between Remy and Jamie while having them interact the least. All the scenes they have in this book are like torture because it so obvious that these two are something altogether special and I can't for them to finally get there.

This series has really picked itself up from that first book it actually managed to resolve my issues with that first book in this one, we finally get a good explanation for why Jamie is Earl and we find out Jamie did indeed tell Remy he isn't 'your grace'. So, this book was amazing on all fronts.

It's hard to review each of the four novels of this series separately because they really do create one long arc. Remmy and Jamie are a heart-breaking pair who explode together. The tension between them from the word go belies an underlying connection that both so desperately need but neither can really fathom indulging. That connection, and the tension it causes both men, as well as others in their lives, play out amidst a backdrop of ongoing mystery and danger as both men try to move forward with their lives in their individual law enforcement fields.

Moving Mountains picks up in the immediate aftermath of Ocean's Apart. Remmy and Miguel Rojas have returned home to their ranch house and their PI business in the desert heat of Arizona to make a real go at the brand new and out-of-left-field relationship between them and to continuing guiding the young man who's pretty much been their son since Remmy rescued him from the sex trade years before. Jamie, on the other hand, continues to watch his foundations crumble. After a final blow decimates everything he ever thought he knew or understood about his life, he flees to the one person who's always been able to pull him back, Remmy.

When Remmy is pulled in by his former department to investigate the death of his old boss, a visit from Miggy's long-lost sister ends up giving Migs and Jamie time to get to know one another while they follow a seemingly separate path of investigation. However, both paths collide tragically and Remmy finds himself lost without the anchors he once secured his life with. In the ultimate irony, Jamie finds himself in the exact position Remmy was in years before when he chooses to walk away for Remmy's benefit.

Laura Harner continues to weave Remmy and Jamie's story around very well developed mystery and nail-biting action. She has a singular gift for developing both her stories and characters in ways that tug at your heart, but are wholly believable and legitimate.

I have put off reading this book for a while now because I remember how emotionally invested I got in these characters and how devastated I was when book 1 and then book 2 left me feeling so lost because what I wanted to happen just didn't. I even considered not reading any more because I just didn't want to shed any more tears on Remy or Jamie or Miggy or Toby, it just hurt too much and I mean really this is fiction, right? Just a story. Except it's a really, really good story, with really, really awesome characters and any author who can make me feel as strongly as I do about the characters in these books is so worth reading.

This was such an awesome read and maybe I do feel broken and a little heartsick for the MCs and all that they've been through but I also adore them and want to know where things are going next for them.

So here I am back in the thick of it and can I just say I am so damned happy I waited to read Moving Mountains because I'm already reading book 4 and I admit defeat if there's a book 5 and 6 and 7...well you get the picture...I'll be there for all of them.

I would highly recommend this series to anyone who reads. However, I will also qualify that and say if you "MUST" have an HEA or even a HFN you may not like this. What this series offers are strong characters, interesting storylines and an emotionally charged reading experience all the things that I hope for when I read a book, whether it's emotionally heartbreaking or uplifting, hilariously funny or tear jerkingly sad depends on my mood.

The one thing that I'm always in the mood for though is an excellent read and this series is that for me. 5 stars and then some.

A frustrating end to this trilogy. The beginning of the book - Jamie's big discovery - has nothing to do with anything else. While it may incite him to travel to Phoenix and reinvent his life, it's never really returned to. The police work is murky, as it is in the two preceding books, though somewhat less implausible this time, since the case is local. But there are rampant errors, including the spelling of characters' names, waffling character motivation, a convenient plot twist that too easily solves the big what-if or how-to about Jamie and Remy, and . Still, as much as I saw coming, I still felt slightly moved by it. While the choice to have sets up interesting feelings of guilt and regret for Remy, it also takes away from the potentially ripe emotional work that Remy, Jamie, and Miggy all could have had to go through. I only wish that Laura Harner had taken a little more time with this novel, to give the characters (and readers) a more fully realized story.

Edit:
I discovered just now the whole issue about Laura Harner's plagiarism.
So, if the books in this series are not under accuse, I can say that she has talent for writing.
And for me, that makes the whole thing so much more sad.
If you have talent, why in the hell do you feel the need to plagiarize other author's work? Only to produce a book every month? I can't understand. And I don't want to.
Now, if I assume that the books in this series are her original work, my rating doesn't change. If I should discover that these books are plagiarized too, my rating will drop to 1 star
Here's my original review:

I liked it very much.
The two MCs had sex in book 1, and then in book 2 and 3 they haven't.
Is this a problem? No. Because the attraction and the growing feelings between them are strong enough to keep the reader's attention hooked.
This is a real love story, because love is so much more than physical attraction and sex.
Yes, I hated what happened to one of the characters. I would have preferred if the author's choice about him would be different. But I understand why she did it.
Now, straight to book 4.

Oh my, what an ending! The tears are falling, and I am so reminded of the ending of the first book in the series. What a heart breaker--again. I cannot wait for the final book in this series!

Even avoiding the spoilers, I had an idea of what to expect from other reviews, but that didn't prepare me for the reality of it. This was another tough yet beautiful episode in the lives of Remy, Jamie and those around them. Harner made me love Jamie and Remy together in book 1. I thought I resented Miggy, yet in book 2, she had me switch allegiances and support Mig and Remy. It seems Harner can push and pull me and my emotions at will. It has been a great ride so far; I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for a HEA in book 4. Certainly that it a reasonable expectation.

This was another very well written book with a solid story line. We're certainly left with issues that need resolutions. The editing wasn't quite as tight as previous books, but still quite decent. All in all, another winner--a strong 5 stars from me!

From my full review: "If you are anything like me and fell in love with all three main characters in the Separate Ways series…Lord Jamie Mainwarring, Det. Remy Remington, and Miggy Rojas…then this is the book that will leave you feeling as devastated as Jamie did at the end of Oceans Apart. Make no mistake, this is as outstanding a story as it is emotionally wrenching. And that fact alone will have people hurling their books at walls, howling and bawling buckets here. Why? Because Laura Harner puts us and her characters through the proverbial wringer in Moving Mountains, a book you will hate to love."

Ok. I knew how this book was going to end but it still broke my heart. Yes, it was sad and I hope that the end game.
The final few words of the book had me in tears, so heartbreaking.

If anybody reading this knows the dat that book 4 Prevailing WInds is due to be released please let me know as I have to read it to get closure, I hope, for this series.

This book had surprises from all sides, from family revelations for Jaime and the new relationship between Remy and Miggy, to Miggy's history catching up with him.

There was so much going on I was afraid I'd miss something, but the writing was clean and clear, I always knew what was happening and why without going into massive detail.

I found the end very hard to take as again, Remy and Jaime said good-bye while their hearts were breaking.... but did they?

Sadly, I feel I have no other choice than to reduce my ratings for all Laura Harner books. The evidence of plagiarism for some of her books appears incontrovertible and she has even apologized for it. This, for me, taints her entire body of work. I can no longer trust the integrity of any of her writing.

This in no way reflects upon the integrity or quality of any author with whom she collaborated.
