They needed to find the person responsible... FBI Special Agent Joseph Carter knows that helping Angel is exactly what Daphne needs. But when Daphne gets Angel to talk, a mysterious and chilling crime begins to unravel - one that will drive Daphne into the darkest corners of her past as she and Joseph track a ruthless killer.

She met her husband, Martin, on a blind date when they were seventeen and after they both graduated from the University of Maryland, (Karen with a degree in Chemical Engineering) they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Karen worked as an engineer for a large consumer goods company, earning two patents, but as Karen says, “scenes were roiling in my head and I couldn't concentrate on my job so I started writing them down. I started out writing for fun, and soon found I was hooked.”
Her debut suspense novel, DON'T TELL, was released in July, 2003. Since then, she has published fifteen more novels and two novellas. Her seventeenth novel, ALONE IN THE DARK, will be released in 2016.
Karen's books have appeared on the bestseller lists of the New York Times, USA Today, London's Sunday Times, and Germany's der Spiegel (#1), and the Irish Times, as well as lists in South Africa (#1) and Australia!
Her novels, I'M WATCHING YOU and SILENT SCREAM, received the Romance Writers of America's RITA award for Best Romantic Suspense for 2005 and 2011. Five of her other books have been RITA finalists. To date, her books have been translated into twenty-four languages.
A former high school teacher of chemistry and physics, Karen lives in Florida with her husband of more than twenty years, her two daughters, two dogs, and a cat.
State Attorney Daphne Montgomery's been sidelined since the traumatic events involving her childhood abductor. When a six-year old girl is found near two dead people who are suspected to be her parents, FBI Agent Joseph Carter thinks Daphne is the ideal person to help the child find her voice.
This is a really short story but it most certainly delivers. The mystery is interesting and it was nice getting more of Daphne and Joseph. It wasn't predictable and I hadn't a clue until all was revealed. Well done.
Suspense runs high in this novella that features Daphne and Joseph from Did You Miss Me? who make a return in this novella that takes place soon after. FBI Special Agent Joseph has a case with a young girl who was found beside the burned out wreck of a car. She is injured, but that isn't the reason she isn't talking. Joseph brings in Daphne hoping someone who has had the same experience can get through to her.
Ok so here's the thing. I love Karen Rose titles. A lot a lot. I spend the whole damn year looking forward to them. Seriously, the whole year. Even when I'm reading books by other authors, I'll wonder when another title of hers will come out... so when I saw she had a new novella coming out, I was pretty damn ecstatic (and that's putting it mildly).
I figured I'd get at least at least half a day with her well drawn out plot, her impossible not to love characters, and just an all around good read.So I bought it, for $2.99 knowing nothing about it, other than It was a novella.
The first thing I noticed? It's length, much shorter than I'd anticipated. Much, much, much shorter than I expected. I figured 150 nook book pages, sounds about right for a novella, even a Karen rose novella. That would be decent, no where near enough amount, because she's that awesome, but I'd be okay with that short of a story.
So yeah, Broken silence is 75 pages....75 pages okaaay.....then I read the story....and guess what, guess what? it's not even that, it's actually only 50 pages. 50 freaking pages. So I paid 3 bucks for 50 ebook pages? Seriously? What the freaking hell? Iirc her full novels go into the thousands of ebook pages, and for this novella, we don't even get half of that, or half of half of that, or even half of half of half of that! So I say again, what the freaking hell!
And Like I said I love Karen Rose, and I like knowing I'm supporting her career, and hopefully encouraging her to write more, but seriously? What the ever loving hell is this? $3 for 50 freaking pages? My ass. Can you say gypped? Gah! I'm so pissed off, i can't think of anything else to say!
Okay, wait, about the book itself...as far as the story goes, it's as good as a 50 page novella can be. Okay that's not true, it was written by Karen rose, ( did I mention I love her?!) so it's a lot better than a lot of other stories I've read from other authors. But it's short. And there's a lot of cut scenes...and the transfers from one scene to the next, IMO was sorta choppy. But it was a pretty okay story. And I loved seeing characters from her previous books. and that's pretty much it. It was sorta like a highly anticipated trip, one you've been planning for months and moths, only to finally go, and be crushingly disappointed.
Anyway, If you've never tried one of her books, keep in mind they're usually pretty gritty. Broken silence would be an okay place to get a taste of her writing ( though, there's very little of her customary grit, IMO) but you'd be better off starting with Don't Tell which is actually worth its' price.
Assistant States Attorney Daphne Montgomery is supposed to be taking time off. But her time off is cut short when Police find a six-year-old girl hiding in the bushes near a burned-out car. They've named the girl Angel. She hasn't spoken since she was found. The bodies in the burned-out car are assumed to be her parents. Daphne knows she has to get involved. She was kidnapped when she was a child and didn't speak for six months. Daphne knows what the child is going through and hopes she can convince the child to tell her what happened.
This novella is part of Rose's Baltimore series. It was nice revisiting Daphne and Joe. The mystery was well written. I would not read this as a standalone. The characters were featured in "Did You Miss Me?". I would suggest reading it before reading this short story. My rating: 4 Stars.
Really good novella that picks up some time after Did You Miss Me?, giving readers another chance to spend some time with Daphne & Joseph. Daphne is on mandated vacation leave after the solving of a horrific case, but that doesn't stop Joseph from asking her for help in reaching a traumatized little girl who refuses to speak. Short on pages, but long on story, this novella is fast-paced, action-packed, and oh so heartwarming! I highly recommend this one to readers. A Must Read!
Karen Rose is an amazingly gifted writer. Her previous books have all been best sellers and she has maintained her high standards with this novella. This tale follows on from Did You Miss Me ? And is intended to bring closure to a story that Ms. Rose clearly hadn't finished with. I don't feel it's essential to have read the previous offering but some readers might find it beneficial. This story is about a young girl who is left injured and traumatised following the murder of her parents . Locked in a world of silence and too frightened to speak the 6 year old is nicknamed Angel by the police as they try to find out what exactly happened. Angel needs protection as her life is still in danger but police and social workers struggle to form a connection with her. FBI Special Agent Joseph Carter thinks he knows just the person to help the frightened child and introduces Assistant State Attorne Daphne Montgomery to her. Daphne has been to hell and back herself as a child and is still reeling from a recent homicide case but she sees something in Angel that calls to her.Determined to help Joseph and Daphne try to connect with Angel but no ones life is safe as the killers know just where Angel is being held. This is in the usual dark vein that Ms. Roses work travels down. It's an horrific insight into just how evil human beings can be. Forget horror movies as this author constantly shows the evil that man can do. Although this is short it encapsulates everything that her readers have come to expect from her. The romance that often features in this authors books is kept on the back burner but the interaction between characters is still as vivid as ever. Well worth a read and looking forward to her next book Watch Your Back
Asst. State's Attorney Daphne Montgomery is on a 2-weeks leave following a traumatic kidnapping of her and her son.
She's not the type to sit around at home and do nothing. So when Baltimore Special Agent Joseph Carter asks for her help, she can't say YES fast enough.
Four days ago, a very young little girl was found next to a burned out car with the bodies of her (what they believe) parents. Calling her Angel, she hasn't spoken a word since she was found.
Joseph knows that giving Daphne something to do is exactly what she needs. When Daphne gets Angel to talk, a mysterious crime comes to light.
Daphne and Joseph find themselves hunting a ruthless killer ... one who still wants Angel.
Karen Rose is my go-to author for Romantic Suspense. Her books are a terrific blend and her characters as she paints them are impeccable. I'm always a little sad when I reach the end of a book.
This is actually short story .... which is a bit of prequel for WATCH YOUR BACK.
Ez sokkal jobban tetszett, mint a másik rövidkéje. Talán mert jobban el tudtam helyezni térben-időben, ismertem a szereplőket... Akárhogy is, imádom! :)
Nice little karen rose book. Love her stories and this was a little taster with only 80 pages. Highly recommend for people who havent read her books before.
An intense, compelling story that will grab your attention from the first page and keep it until the satisfying end. Little Lana will capture your heart along with some of the Baltimore crew.
Daphne is still recovering from a terrible case and is currently on bereavement leave. Struggling to stay out of her head, she is quickly pulled into another case by her boyfriend and head of Baltimore’s Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, Joseph.
Daphne is instantly drawn to this traumatized and scared little girl. She reminds Daphne of herself when she was a child and witnessed something horrible. Trying to get the girl to open up, Daphne suggests she visit her farm for some equine therapy. It works like a charm and with the help of Daphne’s colleagues; this brave little girl breaks her silence.
Karen Rose is quickly becoming one of my very favorite authors. Her suspenseful storytelling always has me holding my breath. Her characters are well-developed and her villains are always meticulously diabolical. This is an excellent, quick read for anyone looking for a new romantic suspense author.
Although I did enjoy my last Karen Rose book I did not feel it was one of her best titles. But I am always ready to start one of her books and while I have been impatientelly waiting for Stevie's story and couldn't resist grabbing this one.
And I did enjoy it very much. Certainly more than I expected. It's a very short novella but I think the plot worked well. We know a lot of the background story since this is more like an extension of the previous book, and the suspense plot was simple and worked well in such short format. I would have preferred something a bit bigger and meatier but I guess she is saving that for Stevie.
Once I realized what was going on I was on the edge of my seat. I felt for Lana, what she was going through and what she lost. I was glad that Daphne and Joesph figured things out and saved the day.
Broken Silence is Book #14.5 in The Romantic Suspense Universe (Baltimore Book #3.5) by Karen Rose. This series includes the Chicago, Philadelphia/Atlanta, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Sacramento, New Orleans, and San Diego series books. It is an intricately woven collection of interconnected thrillers that blend high-stakes crime investigations with emotion, and slow-burn romance. This shared ‘universe’ approach – where each book focuses on a different couple – (yet) has characters, cities, and cases which overlap, creating a rich tapestry of relationships and storylines that reward long-time readers, as well as those looking for worthy binge reading fodder. It’s best read in the publication order for maximum impact, but each book can be read as a standalone without feeling like you are missing anything or getting ‘lost’. Ms. Rose’s writing is immersive, and she excels at balancing pulse-pounding danger with tender, human moments, making you care as much about the characters’ emotional healing as you do about catching the villain. Her antagonists are chillingly believable, and the investigative details feel authentic without bogging down the pace. If you enjoy crime thrillers with a strong emotional core, the Romantic Suspense Universe is sure to please. But, be warned, expect late nights, racing hearts, and characters you’ll think about long after the last page. Happy Reading…
Broken Silence is the next book in the Baltimore section of the Karen Rose Romantic Suspense series. I love the Baltimore setting as I know the area. This book is a novella and only takes a couple hours to read.
Broken Silence is more about continuing the previous story, with Daphne's recovery and Daphne & joe's romance. The mystery portion is light compared to her previous books. It reminds me of an episode of NCIS or Bones. The story wraps up nice and neat in a short time.
I purchased this audio a couple months ago when it was on $.99 special. I'm not too crazy about the narrator. She didn't add to the story with her interpretation of events. Nevertheless, it is a good addition to the series.
This short story occurs soon after Did You Miss Me? F.B.I. agent Joseph Carter has a case where a little girl was found in the snow beside the burned-out wreck of a car. The bodies are assumed to be those of her parents. She’s injured, but it isn’t the reason she isn’t talking. Daphne is supposed to be on mandated vacation leave after solving the horrific case in the previous novel. Joseph brings Daphne in on the case because he's hoping she can get through to the child since she has been through the same experience as the little girl. I liked the mystery. It gave Daphne the closure she needed regarding her past. It was also great to see more moments between Daphne and Joseph. The romance is solid and even moves forward a little. I can’t wait to start the next novel in the series.
