Tales from Nightscape: Front Man, Nothing Will Hurt You, and Resurrection

Rate this book
In "Front Man," an aging screenwriter cast adrift in a youth-oriented Hollywood culture finds a frightening way to make it back into the business. In "Nothing Will Hurt You," a father is obsessed by his daughter's murder, and will stop at nothing to avenge her. In "Resurrection," a son is determined to preserve and care for a father frozen in cryogenic sleep. David Morrell is a consummate storyteller, investing his tales with passion, sympathy and irresistible narrative drive.

For more than 30 years, David Morrell has been known as a master of the literate, high-adrenaline novel of action (First Blood, Desperate Measures, The Protector, etc.). But Morrell is equally at home in shorter forms, as these three stories from his splendid new collection demonstrate.

This recording features Robert Forster, the Oscar-nominated star of Jackie Brown and Audie Award-winning narrator Stefan Rudnicki.

I have been a big of David Morrell since I read Assumed Indentity on a holiday in Singapore some years ago. So it's not that easy to be completely unbiased in reviewing this collection of three stories.

FRONT MAN
A story about a screenwriter who is being perceived as a man simply too old to be able to write modern day contributions sets up a young waiter to present his work and thus solve this problems... or does he... ? Good work, a simple yet very effective and entertaining read. It brings back memories of the Twilight Zone and the Hitchcock short story collections I used to read in my teens. Highly recommended.

NOTHING WILL HURT YOU
Well-written short stories are evident in setting up a scene and it's characters in just a few pages and beginning to tell the actual tale. The story slowly gathers speed and works towards the main character's desired conclusion. Or is it?
Personally I found the ending not very satisfying but liked the way the story progressed. Still worth the read.

RESURRECTION
Cryogenics. Need I say more? Speculative fiction has often broached this subject. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. This short story manages to bring something new into the mix. Race against time. Race against temperature. Race against science. All in all a pretty good read.

For all three stories the narration is done by Stefan Rudnicki who has a great voice and successfully brings these stories to life.

This is an audiobook featuring three tales from David Morrell's short story collection Nightscape. The stories were well produced and read, and I enjoyed them all. Front Man was my favorite about a screenwriter that is considered too old to write anything relevant. Each story was well composed and I really didn't know where any of them were going. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this collection.

A solid, small (three stories) anthology. Imaginative and entertaining.
