Rue Volley lives in the Midwest in an old Victorian house with her husband and a spoiled Pug, crafting the most frustrating plot twists to make you want to toss your Kindle. She loves curling up with a good whodunit on rainy days and collecting book trophies. Rue is a dedicated mood reader and doesn’t mind taking afternoon naps. You can often find her in the library or supporting small bookstores with the money you give her for daydreaming on paper.
I bought (and read) this today, and I'm having a hard time understanding how it's so highly rated. The editing left a great deal to be desired - I noticed quite a few instances of incorrect pluralization, incorrect use of "to, too", and inconsistent subject-verb agreement. Also, the writing style was clunky and hard to get around - the word choices often left you pausing and wondering why it didn't seem to read smoothly. The syntax was awkward and made the characters sound immature.
Speaking of, the characters were shallow at best and the characterization was inconsistent. The dialogue was only just readable and didn't seem natural for the people speaking, and because of the on-again-off-again neglect of contractions the flow the book was thrown off every few lines. As for the erotica, it was almost entirely unremarkable. There was nothing that made it stand out as erotica from the rest of the romance genre.
This, however, I will gladly give the author - this was one seriously amazing idea for a book. The plot outlined in the synopsis was brilliant and highly original. I only wish the execution had been better.
I'm not going to give this a rating, since I barely gave it a fair shake. I made it to about page ten before I deleted it in an angry fashion (if that can even be done...).
I bought both this and Volley's entire vampire series based on the many, many 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon. Surely with that many high marks, must be good, right? No. The editing was just as atrocious as the first book in the other series, and I only made it to page 10 before I got pissed enough to stop. I don't want to have to decipher what things mean when it's not even a hidden code, and why authors feel OK releasing things like this is beyond me. No one likes to spend their money on subpar products, books are no exception.
It's such a pity too. The covers for this series are quite lovely, the story seems really interesting. But - lesson learned. In situations such as this, I will now base my purchases off of the random 1 or 2 star reviewer. Surely someone going against the grain may have a more honest opinion.
My review for: Hellhound by Rue Volley My rating: 5 out of 5 stars Shanna Roberson
Holy hellfire! Rue Volley has done it again. She has created a very dark world that should be the grounds for a horror story but she has totally lit it on fire! With deliciously lickable men and toe-curling sex, Hellhound is one hell of a ride. (Pun intended.)
Halo Bay hasn’t had the best of luck with guys. She hasn’t really had the best luck in life for that matter. And as it would seem that doesn’t change much in death.
Just days before her 26th birthday, her sleaze ball of a boyfriend kills her but not before she kills him too. With that last decision of violence, even though it was self-defense, Halo is sent to purgatory and given a choice. Become a Hellhound to fight against the evils of Hell to protect humanity or suffer the fires of Hell for all eternity? Yup, if it wasn’t for bad luck, she would have no luck at all. Becoming a Hound, she is offered a chance at redeeming herself for her sins and a chance at real love. Will the Devil ruin both of her chances or will she find some sort of peace in this afterlife?
There is a lot to say about an erotica writer that can blend so much emotion into a story all the while being extremely hot. Rue does this every time and it never ceases to amaze me. Rue has the whole ‘insanely hot men’ thing down to a science. No one does naughty quite like Rue Volley. Absolutely no one. Can’t wait for book two!
The story line was interesting. The characters were a somewhat brooding and predictable. There were a few grammatical errors, but overall, I still liked it. I was entertained and I found myself reading through to the end. The writer has a talent for creating worlds that are interesting and developing a plot that kept me going.
This is the story of Halo. She is young but she finds herself living a shell of a life. She is with an abusive man who cheats and is rotten to the core. She doesn't know how to leave, so she endures. One night things get out of hand and Halo ends up on the wrong end of a knife.
She soon discovers that even though she was a victim in her life, she was also guilty of grave sins.
When she is judged and sent to Hell, she knows what she has done and accepts her fate.
Little does she know that she is about to be sent back to Earth to redeem herself in the form of a Hellhound. She will hunt down and kill demons and others who have escaped from Hell and are wreaking havoc on the world. Halo meets her team and comes face to face with Gunner. She is immediately drawn to him but he is cold and aloof.
So when the attraction becomes too much to resist, they fall hard...
They go full speed ahead and the sparks fly.
But Gunner has to pay for caring. He is a Hellhound who must not be allowed to feel things like hope and joy and love. So when Halo starts to fall for him, he pushes her away.
But he doesn't know Halo. She is more than just another pretty face. She is a warrior.
Overall, this one was a three star read for me. I liked it but I didn't love it. It was fairly short at 146 pages. In that short amount of book I got an amazing visual of the world created by the author. I enjoyed the characters even if the story was a bit predictable at times. I think this series has promise and I will likely read on.
This book was given to me by the author as a beta reader for an honest review. Halo Bay has been abused most of her life. But after her boyfriend comes home drunk demanding sexual pleasure, and pretty much is forcing her to, she bites him! He beats the crap out of her for it and then stabs her. While she is laying there bleeding she snaps and stabs and kills him. As she is laying there dying, she is picked up by Gunner, who takes her to Purgatory and gives her the choice of Hell or becoming a hellhound and kill demons and hellish creatures that have escaped from Hell. And have the chance at redemption and to be able to go Heaven. Of course she chooses hellhound. Of course she has pass a test with Lucifer first. Gunner takes her to meet the other hellhounds, Finnie and Ari (who were once vikings), and Dorian (A romanian vampire). Her chance at redemption starts there..... I loved this book! I can not wait for the next one. The banter back and forth between Halo and Lucifer is so funny! And the sex in the book is steamy too! I do not have any dislikes about the book other then wishing it was longer and that I needed tissues at the end. Rue you did it again! Congratulations!
What did I expect from a book that came this highly rated? Certainly not a book riddled with typos and historical "facts" that seem to have been googled, and then copy/pasted into the book without editing. (Besides; high born Romans, let alone nobles, weren't crucified, that was the fate of the lower classes. And would a Roman really go by the name of Gunner? Hmmmmm, sceptical... Extremely sceptical.)
As for Lucifer and his brother El: I really wish the author hadn't treated the two most powerful beings in the universe as juvenile, immature brothers, speaking modern slang. It just detracts too much credibility from the story.
The premise was so interesting, it's a shame it went to waste like this. But at least it was a quick read, with double spaced text.
1 or 2 stars. I'll give it a 1+ since I'm saving my 1 star ratings for books I not only dislike, but loathe. Besides, I was marginally interested in Gunner's fate.
editor needed. 911!!!!! I really wanted to like this book. The premise feels smart and awesome. However, I stumbled over /everything/. Errors. Too many errors. How the hell did the author feel ok releasing it like this?
I put my kindle down, and tried again later.
Fail.
This may or may not be a good story - I will never know. The editing is so flawed, I can't finish. Bah. Returned for full refund.
Halo Bay is my new favorite heroine. From finally taking a stance against her latest abusive relationship to taking a job, from purgatory, to avoid hell so she can redeem herself and try to get into Heaven. After Halo turns down the opportunity to sew her own lips and mouth shut with black cord, she accepts this job for the very sexy Gunner. She then becomes a Hellhound after a set of test. Afterwards, she learns that there are only ever five Hellhounds at a time and when one dies another one takes his or her place. We meet a menagerie of interesting people in this novel as well. From a vampire trying to redeem himself to the killer of Julius Caesar, there is never a dull moment. Also we see a lot of Lucifer, who is a huge douche but I like him. As a Hellhound this group must rid the world of all demons reaping havoc on Earth. This novel kept me on the edge of my seat and it should have come with the warning to "not start before bedtime" it would have saved me from staying up until two am to try and finish. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
beware: one slight spoiler at the end of my review! wow, Rue ...just wow! I'm sure I'm not the only to say this, but I LOVED Hellhound #1 from the very first word, and as always you left me wanting more more more! thank you for allowing me the opportunity to beta read for you. This book has it all, action, adventure, sexy players, romance, deception, love, HOT SEX and much more...all wrapped under one cover. I would highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys a nice hot read, whether you enjoy 'Hellfire' hot or steamy sex hot, this book's for you! I'm excited for the release of Hellhound #2 and I'm sure that anyone that reads #1 will be too!
p.s. i was glad that Halo got to see the sonofabitch boyfriend being 'taken care of', for all he did to her. having his dick ripped off was only a piece of what he deserved for the way he mistreated her.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
This is the first book in the Hellhound Series. I really enjoyed it.
Halo Bay is a character that I wasn't sure about. She is nice enough as a person, but she has REALLY bad judgement when it comes to men. I don't understand her need to remain in an abusive relationship. I suppose it's because I've not been in the same situation (and I hope to never be!), that makes it so hard to comprehend. When she kills her boyfriend in self defense, but is also fatally wounded, she finds herself facing a tough decision - a life in purgatory or to become a Hellhound.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and it won't be the last! I started reading this book and couldn't put it down! However, I did have a few grumbles. The story didn't flow as smoothly as I would have liked, but this could have just been my interpretation. I would have also liked a bit more verbal interaction between Gunner and Halo - they are meant to be team mates after all! This story also felt a bit too short, and could have done with a bit more background into the Hellhound origins. And, why the rule for there being only five Hellhound's at a time? Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the story from start to finish! Lucifer is a character that intrigued me, but he is rather creepy and has a bit of a hypocrisy thing going on! Gunner is a very enigmatic character and I really wanted to know a bit more of this person, because I liked what I read about him. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out how the story unfolds!
Rue Volley has written a wonderfully steamy erotic romance that had more heat than the fires of Hell! Her characters are interesting and very lifelike. I do have another one of her books on my Kindle from a different series to read, and this book made me want to read it as soon as possible!
I do not recommend this book to readers under 18 due to scenes of an explicit sexual nature and the use of foul language. However, I recommend this book if you love HOT steamy romances (paranormal or contemporary), with a dark fantasy twist. - Lynn Worton
Halo Bay hasn't had any luck with men and when her current boyfriend beats her she finally snaps and kills him, She is taken to purgatory and given the choice of sewing her eyes and mouth shut and walk about blind for eternity or until the flames take her or go to hell with Gunner and train to become a Hellhound.
When Rue Volley offered me a chance to read and review this book I really didn't hesitate and said yes straight away, this is because I love Rue's books with a passion. I did go in a little blind not really knowing what it was about and when I read the description I did wonder if it was something I would like BUT OMG this is a fantastic read and by far the best book to date from this author. I love where she gets her imagination from and reading this takes you right there she also describes everything fantastically well! By the time I had got to the bottom of the first page I was completely sucked in and I wanted it to never end. Halo is a great character but when you meet Gunner he is very hot and I am looking forward to his story unfolding in the next book and then there is Lucifer, he blew me away and is the ultimate bad boy. ( a major weakness of mine)
A fantastic supernatural read that doesn't disappoint, hot sex, hot guys and a bad boy with an evil bitch thrown in. Well written and imaginative story that had me begging for more...
I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review..

I was gifted a copy from the author for an honest review. This is a new series from the author and one you will find yourself wrapped up in, in no time. Ms. Volley is unstoppable when it comes to pulling her readers in and this new series is no different. You might find yourself in a love/hate relationship with Lucifer. Halo Bay has had enough of the abuse from her boyfriend Travis. Attempting to defend herself, she ends up killing him and then realizes he has as well taken her life. She’s at a crossroads when she awakens and is given the opportunity to become a Hellhound or spend the rest of her existence in limbo. The offer comes from a very handsome man named Gunner. Who wouldn’t want to follow this man to the ends of the earth? Those that she works with all have skeletons in their closets and all have to pay in some form for what they did in their past. Learning about each character and the way they ended up where they are now is exciting. Being a part of hell is more than Halo could imagine. She would have never expected she would work for Lucifer in some ways but when you deal with the Devil, you are always deceived in one way or another. What will Halo have to sacrifice for those that she has become friends with that she considers her family now?
I received and e-ARC copy of Hellhound #1 by the author in exchange for an unbiased review. I also bought a copy to support the author.
This series in intended for the 18+ Reader Only!
Thank You Rue for another sexy, steamy, sizzling, spellbinding story of self discovery that sent me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, and left me wanting more. ICE is ready Bring on Installment #2.
Excellent job of keeping the emotions flowing while describing the scenes. Twisting a devilish and delicious tale with a very dark and dangerous world that left me wanting more of Halo and Gunner. I Love strong, independent female lead ... Pssst! the rest of the gang is awesome as well.
I Love this story because Halo has to make a choice--which really made this first installment intriquing, and kept me there. Enter in Gunner and OH MY WOW! what would you decide?
Hellhound by Rue Volley was breathtaking! Fast paced with lots of intrigue and tension between the characters. And hot! Not recommended for anyone under 18 or anyone susceptible to typo’s and a few grammar slips. This is the only thing keeping this from a 5 star. It is really a 4.8 stars I read it in one straight shot. I couldn’t put it down. I loved the characters. Halo Bay is flawed and real. She is in a tough spot with an abusive boyfriend yet she chooses and becomes stronger for it. Gunner is flawed as well. He is stuck, stagnating… Then there is Lucifer, the character you love to hate or at least distrust! I was compelled to like him, yet he is so not likeable! So much angst. So much pent up lust! The creativity and the weaving of multiple stories we think we know in a completely new context is intriguing and fun. I need more! More understanding of how the system works, more conversation and interaction between Gunner and Halo. I can’t wait for Dec. 28th!!
I'm glad I only paid 99 cents for this. I'll start with the bad and end with the good. First, the grammar and writing style is pretty terrible. There were a lot of typographical errors in every chapter. The were tenses and point of view switches in areas where they should not have, and the author's style was generally that of an armature writer; very simple and passive. The story is short with a simple plot and a lot of smut-talk. The actual sex scenes themselves where nicely done. I liked the characters, they were well developed and their history was cool to read about. The story itself isn't bad, it just fell short of its potential for me. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it had been edited and fleshed out more than it was. I bought this book because a friend gifted me the 2nd book in the series and I wanted to start from the beginning. Will I read book two? Probably eventually, but I'm no hurry to read it after reading this first book.
This was for my taste one short reads but very fast paced and funny. Can't wait to see whats happens in the second book. I would highly recommend to all of you!!! and people are fans of Supernatural will enjoy this!! I just must said that the ending.... man, didn't expect that there would be death, bargain with hot-as-hell Lucifer....
Well, Rue, looking forward how you will get out of the mess. Geez, the teaser at the end of the book!!!
and yes, Lucifer this is for you(but I secretly love you) image:
Rue Volley has again created a tale to please on many levels. Bay is killed while defending herself from her brutal boy friend. She is awakened to a new reality of hell as she took a life defending her own. Gunner stands before her and bids her follow and she does into the fold of the Hellhounds defenders of humanity from those who escape hell. If you have liked Rue’s adult stories in the past this one will become one you like on a whole new level and there is more story to come. Read HellHound by Rue Volley now and escape reality in Bay’s world. Bella Doerres.
Okay, three things: ·The book doesn't do the blurb justice. ·I don't care how much of a "history buff" you are, while casually discussing the Roman Empire you are not going to sound like you are reading from a textbook. That scene read like I was writing a report on Julius Caesar and blatantly copy and pasted it from Wikipedia. ·WHEN PEOPLE TALK THEY USE CONTRACTIONS! This drove me absolutely insane. For fucks sake. Whether out loud or in your head, everyone uses contractions.
I already own the second book of the series, so I'll probably read it at some point. Just not now while I'm still so annoyed.
I am not even going to rate this book because I could not even get past the first couple of pages. I think I could only get up to like chapter three. I wanted to like it because of the story premise. However, I was highly disappointed. I don't like having sex thrown at me right off the bat and that is exactly what happened. No development at all just BAM in your face. I understand the devil is suppose to be naughty but he read like a 14 year old hormonal teenager. Come on he is the devil for crying out loud. It was not sexy at all. Ugh!
The plot and storyline are amazing! This is definitely something original and dark. I am excited to read the rest of the series.
I only gave it three stars because of the grammatical errors. It does get in the way as there were a few things that I had to re-read to make sense of it; i.e. roll versus role. I also had a hard time that Halo was so accepting of what happened to her. A bit of denial would have made it more interesting and believable (well, as believe as a story like this can be.)
Bought this and read it but I found it very hard to get into. I didn't think much of Halo Bay as a character and found her too much to get on with. For a 40th book I found the editing to be poor and that only added to my dislike of this book. It wasn't too bad but not something I would read again unfortunately.
I loved this book. I had the pleasure of reading it early and am so happy that I picked this up. It's a great horror erotica. It actually has a story compared to most erotica I've picked up. I suggest reading it. 18+ for sure!
High Caliber, Loaded Read (Pun intended) I never knew a Hellhound would steal my attention and captivate me in such a intense way. This whole story is different in the best sense, unlike anything I’ve encountered. It’s lavishly detailed, told so you can almost swear you hear the narrator. Gritty, ugly, menacing but still versatile villains. And the opposite Alluring, charming, gorgeous, emotionally appealing men who tries to catch the female protagonists attention. Is she just a sum of her fears and upbringing, or is she a collage that somewhat anamorphic displays her current life, or is she perhaps something else entirely? What the pun is, and what I mean by my no spoiler review, that is a mystery for those who still have not indulged in reading this story. But it is most absolutely a delicacy even for a bibliophiles demanding taste. The Author displays a supreme skill here at story writing, it makes you wonder~ Could it be true? All things considered..this first part might be .... That might sound like a conundrum considering the topic, but its hard to explain without spoilers. You just have to read and decide for your self.. 😉
I have followed this author's work for years now and she has never yet failed in entertaining me and writing some really fabulous pieces of art.
This is actually a remake of her original Hellhound and this one is even more brilliant than the original. I absolutely love this one even more. The characters were remarkable and believable. Halo really drew me into the story with her sass and uniqueness. I felt as if I could really connect with Halo and her life.
The story-line was intriguing and absolutely addicting. I was captured in each moment by the turn of every page. This story just grabbed and brought me right into the middle of the chaos that was Halo's life and I loved every minute of it.
I do not recommend this read for readers under the age of 18, but I do highly recommend it. Rue Volley is a complete genius!
