Joann Sfar (born August 28, 1971 in Nice) is a French comics artist, comic book creator, and film director.
Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.
Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.
His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.
From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.
Después de un inicio regular, la mazmorra se centra ahora en la evolución de Herbert hasta convertirse en un guerrero adulto capaz de hacerse cargo de si mismo. Para ello se enfrentará a sus propios dominios, renunciará a ser Rey de los tragos, aprenderá del maestro y contará con la ayuda invaluable de su amigo Marvin, que también logrará trascender las enseñanzas de su viejo maestro y adquirir nuevas habilidades además de volverse más sabio. Todo ello con estupendos dibujos y aderezado de un tono humorístico y continuas referencias simbólicas que permiten una divertida lectura en dos planos igual de interesantes.
This is very readable, and it’s impressive how much plot they fit into 46 pages, but the story is nothing special and the jokes are all very basic – it didn't make me even come close to cracking a single smile. The cartooning is solid and the colouring is nice, but compared to the first volume, there’s a lack of really gorgeous images. The first volume didn't blow me away, so having liked this one less, I'm now in no rush to continue with the series – which is a shame, as I had high hopes for it.
Qua verhaallijn nóg beter dan Donjon 1: Eendenhart. Grappig, origineel, inventief met enige diepgang en onverwacht aandacht voor normen en waarden. Een luchtige levensles om duimen en vingers af te likken. Meer van dat!
Jestli přečíst nějaký komiks, pak je to tento. Další příběhy vévody kačera a jeho cesta za ovládnutím hubatého opasku a meče.
Vtípek: Dvojice hlavních hrdinů bojuje s bambilióny goblinů. Vzhledem k počtu protivníků trvá boj opravdu dlouho. Dokonce tak dlouho, že mrtvolám začne mezi prsty bujet mykóza, kterou se naši hrdinové neváhají posilňovat. Jeden z nich tak v průběhu boje přibere 10 kg a získá navíc zvláštní gastritický plamen, kterým zbytek přesily sežehne.
Jestli tohle není geniální dílko, tak už nevím pak které je.
