*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
So I really liked Ascha as the prequel to The Tower of Boran. I liked that we were able to see Michaeyala and Ascha before things went bad between them.

I did feel incredibly bad for Ascha, and it’s amazing something that seems small can change your life so much. Ascha wasn’t really doing anything so bad that it warranted 30 years in prison. It was an extremely harsh sentence, and it bothered me that no one really stepped up to defend her.

Michaeyala didn’t mean to cause her imprisonment, and out of everyone I think she was the one who had defended Ascha the most. Sister Morana and Brother Raeyan seemed to content to let her take the fall. Brother Raeyan confessed, but ultimately there was nothing for him to confess and so he betrayed her in a way.

It’s hard at the end of the book to see how Ascha would change and become just N’Dreyid. However it is there and after what she suffered and 30 years in prison, her acceptance could change to anger and rage over what she suffered.

Ascha was extremely well-written but there were times when certain scenes seemed longer than they needed to be. None of the scenes were unnecessary just a little too long for my taking. Also, the book was a lot of buildup and then the last 25% was where the book really started moving. Shauna Scheets did a wonderful job of creating interesting characters that I cared about. I was very indignant on Ascha’s behalf for the last half of the book. I felt that she was terribly misjudged and harshly punished.

The book was extremely well-written and it does suck you in. AI really enjoyed the overall novel, but because I would’ve liked it to move forward a little faster I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

This is a well written story about young Ascha and Michaeyala in the school of magickal studies.

This is has a fully developed world that is different than ours. It is complete with towns, laws, plants and crafts that people use. The level of technology seems about equivalent to our middle ages.

The world in the book is supported with several appendixes. There is one for pronunciation, a glossary, and a herbal notebook. For me the names seemed natural and quickly learned.

The life for the new students is challenging. Especially for Ascha. You will see what I mean.

I think this is an excellent fantasy book for all ages. I think it is appropriate for young people as young as maybe 10 years old. There are some themes that may be advanced for younger readers. I am looking forward for the other stories set in this world.

Reserving judgment until next book. I had an inkling she would somehow get in trouble.
