Love and Decay 1 #10

Love and Decay, Episode Ten

Rate this book
Zombies- as if that wasn’t enough to ruin any girl’s dream of a happily ever after.

Reagan and crew have finally found some place permanent to stay. Tyler’s childhood friend Gage runs a storage facility turned apartment complex and has offered them shelter, safety and a permanent residence for however long they want it.

It sounds too good to be true.

The problem with living in the Zombie Apocalypse is that most things that sound too good to be true usually are.

And among concerns about Tyler’s crazy dad, Matthias Allen, stopping over for a visit, Reagan still has to deal with Kane.

When Kane becomes a difficult prisoner, Reagan is sent to deal with him. A few unlucky circumstances later and Reagan must learn to trust Kane with not only her safety, but also her life. On the run from a horde of Zombies, Reagan and Kane must fight together to stay alive.

But before they’re out of danger, Reagan is going to have to compromise parts of herself she didn’t know were up for debate.

Can Reagan get back to Hendrix alive? Or worse, without Kane marking part of her heart?

Love and Decay, Episode Ten, is the tenth in a novella series in a Dystopian Romance about Zombies, the end of the world and finding someone to share it with.

This story takes place over multiple episodes, with a release date every two weeks. Approximately 20,000 words.

Holy Halloween! I think this episode is my favorite!

Firstly, I love Harrison for reading my mind. I totally laughed out loud because Vaughan said something and Harrison and I were thinking the exact same thing. So does that mean my mind is like that of a young teenage boy? Ew. I hope not. But still, I like Harrison all the more now.

So, the whole group was voting on whether they would stay at Gage's settlement for a while or move on. Vaughan was trying to get Tyler's opinion on what she wanted to do. He told her that she and Miller were a part of their family now and families stick together. But he phrased it in such a way that me, Harrison, and any other person with a dirty mind would make it sound like it was perverted.

Vaughan to Tyler: "It's too late to pull out now."

description

Bah! Haha!

Oh gosh, I love The Office. *Sighs*

So Kane is in this book. Like, a lot. And Reagan expresses all these "feelings" she has for him, and when I say "feelings" I do not mean lovey-dovey type feelings. I mean feelings of responsibility and other confused feelings that Reagan can't really explain.

Sure, I was afraid of [Kane] and knew I needed to keep him at a distance. But I hadn't exactly done that. I'd more or less done the opposite of that.

Kane inexplicably felt like my responsibility. I was the reason he was here. I was the reason he'd left The Colony and pursued us. I needed to handle him.

Now, I totally do not agree with that second quote of Reagan's. Kane is not her responsibility at all! He made his own decision to come after her. She does not have any obligation to him because of the choices he made. He was the one to leave The Colony. Reagan should not feel like it is her problem to fix.

But whatever. Those feelings of mine were pointless once I read further into the story and Kane and Reagan were attacked by like seventy zombies or something ridiculously scary like that.

One gun. A knife. And a piece of wood. Those were Reagan's and Kane's only weapons against the hungry horde that ran after them like Olympic sprinters.

Kane could have been evil and just ditched Reagan to save his own skin.

description

But he's not an evil guy. He can't do something so heartless. It's just too bad that Reagan doesn't see that yet. She's always talking about how wicked he is, but I have yet to really see his wicked side.

Anyway, back to the topic of being chased by zombies...

I would literally have a heart attack and die if I were in their position. Like, for real. My heart would just stop and I would fall to the ground dead, a yummy meal for the zombies. I could not outrun seventy zombies. No way.

I believe that a near death experience (and one that is as terrifying as being chased by zombies) is a real bonding experience between people. I sure got bonded to Kane in this episode because of it. Their situation was so tragic and scary that I would have flung myself into Kane's arms after an experience like that. For sure!

Reagan was being all reasonable and thinky...but I was just like, "I would totally be hugging him and holding onto him in relief that I was still alive if I were you right now, Reagan."

I mean, she got there, eventually. Just after thinking about it for a bit and then graciously allowing him to hug her.

He wouldn't have needed my permission for a hug. I would have attacked him with a hug even if he didn't want it.

But anyway, I got really emotional reading this episode and I loved it. And I really am intrigued by Kane now. Like really really interested. I want to have the next episode now so I can know what is going to happen with him next!

This is an interesting series.
It has humour so things don't get too heavy but at the same time they do loose people and there is violence and killing.

The series is a long one and these main characters stories continue for 3 seasons.
There is also a spin off series that deals with the sister later.

There is little intimacy. There is touching, hugging and a few kisses but no sex until much later in the last season.
The main 2 characters have love interests but due to the nature of the start of the virus and the constant threat there are no intimate scenes until the end of season 3.

Each season ends on a HFN with an enemy thread running through the whole series.
Each episode either ends as HFN with a goal set for the next or at times an immediate threat will run across several episodes.
At the time I read these the whole series was on Amazon KU so it was possible to read one after the other or complete in a box set.
If you start reading and want to get to a HEA you will need to read the entire 3 seasons.
There is the immediate zombie threat which is constant but also the series deals with humanities reaction to survival.
Often a bigger threat is the desire for power between the surviving groups and these at times use lack of resources and scientific experimentation to control the main threats.
Later in the series there is a love triangle situation of sorts for the heroine.
It's not exactly a love triangle but there is a dividing force between the main couple due to the interest from another man.
There are no intimate details but there is a kissing scene with the other man, but at the time the main couple are not together.
The characters are all very different, they have their flaws but they are college age so when they make mistakes and sometimes they are stupid ones I put it down to youth and although they have learnt survival through experience the threat is constant so it's not easy for them to be sensible all the time.
There is a good bit of banter between the group and a great deal of humour.
There are some serious issues dealt with too and the main human enemy threat is pretty evil.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Well, not really. But c'mon!
I'm sure being trapped in a bunker with the man obsessed about you must make some emotional distress.
Can't wait to read the next one.

I feel like writing a numbered list for this one, there are so many things I loved about it, and I am in emotional limbo at the moment (no clue how I feel except maybe stunned!!) and can't cohesively put much together. If you are just cruising reviews for these though, stop now and just go read them!!! They are amazing!! You will love them! And the first one is *free!* You shouldn't pass that up. ♥ Humor, love, zombies, end of the world action, the most crush-worthy boys (even the "bad" ones!), outstanding characters with ties based on respect (for each other + themselves, seriously role models these girls+boys!), unique well-played-out storylines, and really just so much more!
And now, onto my favs for this delicious episode of Love+Decay, they just keep getting better and better and silly me, this one had lots of Kane and while I know that is never going to really play out to a HEA, I'm soaking it all up now. I love how they contrast. Oooh the drama!!

spoilerish below >>

1) first and foremost, Kane saves the day, oh and isn't a rapist, hurrah! I think I knew that already, but I'm glad Reagan sees it too. Now I could be 100% totally proven wrong, and I'm open to it because let's face it Rachel Higginson clearly knows how to direct emotion toward characters (never thought I'd like Tyler, but I do and I'm glad), but yeah until proven otherwise I'm going to keep thinking the guy is misunderstood and just needs a redirect for his attention, someone to put stock in instead of the power trip he's been living since the zombie infection started.

2) Harrison's personality, ha he really cracks me up. I love hearing about the younger Parker siblings, the author is good at keeping everyone involved even with an expanding cast. Oh and Miller, he is beyond adorable.

3) Gage + Tyler as childhood friends! Intriguing!!! I kind of like the idea of Tyler on her own for a while, but I like that she's got all this room to grow and people to grow with, there doesn't even have to be romance, but I'd love to see her trust again. My heart was breaking for her in this episode, her backstory is so well thought out and just, sigh, you can't help but feel for her. And I was trying really really hard not to, honest!

4) Reagan being realistic and wanting to stay somewhere. Hello, brilliant! A character rethinking their plans and adapting to those around them, this harks back to the comment I made about mutual respect, I love it.

5) “Privacy?” Hendrix was the last to throw in his two cents. “Flowers. Candy. Need I go on?” ++ He shrugged and gave me a devilish smirk. “I’ve been on a scavenger hunt all week.”
The boy is made of magic! He is without a doubt one of the star attractions in this series - gruff but sensible, otherworldly cute, and an amazing foil to Reagan, who really does need a good push sometimes! She has a pretty shocking epiphany about him this week, it was actually kind of funny how it happened, and *groan* did it really have to be this week? Kane was finally semi-catching a break, haha! But it's so cute nonetheless!

I have a lot of favorite quotes from this one, most of them are hilarious one liners, but I'll wait and add them later, I just have the smashwords pdf at the moment, I am looking forward to highlighting up a freaking storm when it comes out for kindle.

I do love this series and this book went very quickly. I could not stop reading it. First I must mention the really basic editing mistakes that could so easily be corrected with a read through by a friend who speaks English. But I got the gist and continued on.

I did not give this one 4 stars and it is just a problem with the character Reagan. She seems unable to kill Kane. Now we have her stuck in a cave with him. Her history with him is he kidnapped her and held her so she would learn to love him. He is a stalker, period. And a dangerous one at that. She is afraid of him and yet her "friends" seem to always be leaving her with him to care for his wounds, bathe him, etc. Her boyfriend Hendrix is super protective of her and yet even he seems to allow this. No one seems to kill this dude even when they have the opportunity, the means and more than enough motivation. May I remind all that this IS THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE.

But now I feel we are going to find out Kane is really not that bad since he saved her life and she his. She even crushes on him slightly. Really? And they are trapped together in a bunker.

I do like that the romance between Reagan and Hendrix seems to have been revealed fully. And that Alec has found someone else to love. It sort of bugs me that during this apocalyptic time the girls, who see these guys every day all day (mostly) are still keeping their virgin cards, Reagan saying she does not know Hendrix well enough, is not ready, whatever. Maybe I am in the wrong genre to expect some serious realistic love. Maybe they just need to visit a pharmacy and pick up some birth control.

I do not say any of this to turn anyone off. Maybe it is not truly a review, but a series of questions about the story in general and this book in particular.

Yes, I do recommend reading this book. Yes, I do recommend a bit of basic editing. Yes, you will like this story, the characters and will lose sleep reading it.

Could the groups trek to the South finally be coming to an end? It looks as if they are finally coming to terms that it may be time to quit traveling and put down some roots, if even for a little bit. Now the only problem left to contend with is Kane…the big, broody elephant in the room.

***
Kane was attractive, gorgeous even. And he had this whole aura of mystery that was a little bit enticing, if I was honest with myself. But that was it.
On the inside he was a hollow, cruel person that lost his moral compass a while ago. The moments he was anything more were just that, moments…glimpses of a person that ceased to exist when Zombies became out reality.

***

Going to be flat out honest with you...the ending to this one sucked. Big time. Higginson did another amazing job writing this one and giving us another nail biting, suspenseful read. But really? I am just not liking the predicament that Reagan has found herself once again. This girl is marked for bad luck and poor company. Ugh! There was supposed to be chocolates and flowers at the end. This is not the romance I signed up for. Where is my chocolates and flowers and declarations of love??

All sarcasm aside, I did really love this one. It definitely has you thinking and wondering what is going to happen with Reagan. Not going to give away what situation she has found herself in, but it is a doozy. All I know Hendrix is going to come in blazing in the next one that is for sure. He has to! I just hate that we have to wait 2 whole weeks before we get to see it.

As the series continues, the intensity and suspense increases with every turn of the page. This series is a must read for anyone with a zombie fetish and a love for romance. And even though I complained about the ending and how it sucked...5 stars all the way!

I have to give 5 stars for this series I just love this story. You never know what's going to happen from one episode to the next. One minute your heart and mind goes one direction, and in a page you are changing directions. The characters you hate and want to continue hating you come to love. Ugggg!
At the end of episode 9 the group ends up in another compound at gunpoint. But come to find out the guy, (Gage) running this compound has a history with Tyler and the rest of the Allen family . He defected from her father's compound and feels bad that he did not try to take Tyler and Miller with him, he feels he owes them. So he offers his compound as a refuge for them and the Parker group, for as long as they want.
Tylers father is due though for an annual meeting, so Gage is set to send them to his secret hide out a home in the side of a cave not far from the compound but hidden enough until her father leaves. He locks Kane up because he does not trust hime, but he needs cleaned up and then he will send him with his father.
Problem Kane won't let anyone clean him or his wounds except none other than Reagan, so she volunteers to let Tyler back out, and goes to the task without Hendrix knowledge. Not Good!!!
Needless to say Reagan ends up at the creek with Kane and only a couple guards to protect them. Zombies yes hoards of them and ones that seem to be well organized and smarter than previous encounters come out everywhere. The guards dont last long and the compound is out of reach. Reagan tells Kane she knows where they can run and they head to the house in the cave. Barely making it, the are now secluded , alone, and do not know when help will find them.

I have to say the whole Kane thing is getting to me. You know when you meet someone and they are handsome and intriguing and then they open their mouths and say something so arrogant or stupid that you can never look at them the same again? Or it’s like when you know someone who is pretty and they think they are SUPER hot and you instantly think, “you’re not THAT hot” and then you can start seeing the imperfections until they are barely even pretty anymore due to their attitude?
Well, that is how I feel about Kane. I don’t care if he is perfect physically. His attitude would be a complete turn off to me. And for that reason I cannot understand Reagan at all on this one. I can’t wait for the whole Kane part to be over. I have to admit it was a good ending that makes me want to read on, but only so Hendricks can find her and have an amazing reunion!
I hope to see more point of view too. I would love to see it thru Hendricks eyes or Vaughan’s. Especially Vaughan because he is my favorite. Didn’t understand Reagan on that choice either! LOL!

Our favorite zombie crusaders have finally found a safe place to stay for awhile. The compound is run by the sound minded & well prepared Gage, who also happens to be a childhood friend of Tyler.

Gage asks Reagan & Tyler for a huge favor (too much if you ask me). He wants the girls to clean up the incapacitated Kane. Just in case you've forgotten, Kane is Tyler's brother & the man that tries to force Reagan to stay with him.

Overcome with fear, Tyler doesn't feel she can complete the task no matter how weak Kane may be. Reagan & a few guards take Kane to a small creek so he can gingerly clean himself.

All is well until a herd sneaks up & quickly overpowers the guards effectively & purposely cutting Reagan & Kane off from the compound.

Now it's a race for their lives as the two run threw a thick forest with the advanced zombies close behind. Luckily Reagan finds the hidden bunker Gage told her about earlier & she & makes inside just in time.

Now Reagan must make a choice: stay inside a cramped bunker with the man she fears the most or become lunch to a hungry herd of zombies!

Yet another great story from Rachel Higginson. This novella which comes out approximately every two weeks documents the story of Reagan, Haley and the Parker Brothers as they try to cross America after it has been taken over by Feeders. Our favorite characters have finally found a place to rest for a while, but things can't be calm for long with this crew. I am really enjoying this series, even though I typically don't read "zombie" books. Rachel brings these characters to life. They aren't perfect, but have very human moments that make them relatable to almost everyone. I recommend everything that Rachel has written. I haven't found one I didn't like yet!

4.5 stars -- oh ho ho Ms Higginson...I can see what you're doing here, and I can't decide if I like it or not. I'm intrigued by Kane, but to make him 3 dimensional?? *sigh* So unfair. Yup, enjoyed this episode -- enjoyed getting to delve even MORE into the Allen family background. Not sure what to think of Tyler and her beaus, but I'm with Reagan...I'm enjoying watching it all play out.

Some fabulous zingers from Harrison again...truly LOL moments. And what an intriguing twist...I feel like I should have seen it coming, but I totally didn't. Can't wait to see what we learn about Kane now, and how this will inevitably play out.

I started reading this series just a couple weeks ago, and was so excited to be able to read so many of them in a row. But now I have finished the last one published so far and I think I am going to scream. I swear this one has the worst ending of all of them. I NEED to know what is going to happen now! And I can't say anything without spoiling, so everyone is just going to have to go read this series for themselves. And I am going to wait impatiently for two weeks for the next one.

Ahh, how did I fall so far behind?! This was a Halloween special release! As usual, Ms. Higginson keeps you on the edge of your seat with some very interesting developments! Somehow the guy I was so creep-ed out by has now worked his way under my skin and my opinion is swaying...
